May It Rest In Peace

Many things have died in 2009…we lost a lot of people like movie stars, politicians and ideas…..some deaths were more profound than others….this is……THE DECADE THAT WAS…..a look back at the 1st decade of the 2000’s……

It was a  decade of wonder and amazement……a decade of death and destruction……a decade of scandals and a decade of ruin…..in other words a decade that will live in infamy….(I know…if it was good enough for Roosevelt then it is good enough for Info Ink)……..This decade could possibly the worst decade in American history since the Great Depression……Personally…..I could lived without it…..

We, as Americans, as well as the rest of the world lived through much….much too much than should not have been……

A disputed election/9/11/2 wars/many American deaths/death of bi-partisanship/redefining of the word change/economic collapse/1st African-American president/growth of more racism/a health joke/dysfunctional Congress/death of hope/death throes of the middle class/political sex scandals/the sexual appetite of a once powerful sports icon/

All in all a really crappy decade, unless you are on Wall Street where free taxpayer money was everywhere……..it ran generously like that of a busted water pipe…..a good decade for greed…..and lobbyists spending money like drunken sailors……

Some good came out in the decade, but all in all, it is a decade that most Americans could have lived without……we can only pray that this new decade will be kinder to the American people than the last……but I am a skeptic…….

Info Ink’s Person Of The Year

Time has given the honor to Bernanke….let me see he saved the economy from a collapse that he caused….and that gives him the distinction of being a person of the year….I think he should have been awarded the A/hole of the year…..

This is the second year that Info ink has awarded this thing…last year we gave it to the Credit Card….because it symbolized the crisis that we were facing in our economy….

This year after lots and lots of deliberation we narrowed it down to ……(drum roll please)…..Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)……….

Now I am sure you would like to know why he deserves this distinction…..alrighty then……

Lieberman has survived many tribulations in the last year…..he overcame giving a key note speech at the GOP convention…..he overcame the Dem attempts to strip him of all his Senate assignments….he has forced the Dem majority to negotiate with itself….he has single handedly given the minority more power to influence legislation…..and he may well have been the sole person to kill any health reform, for he helped stop single payer, public option, medicare buy-in and on and on…..He became a filibuster of ONE…..an accomplishment without precedents…….

All Hail the Person Of The Year….Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)…..Joe the Bummer!

The War To End All Wars–The Drug Saga

A cute title for a not so cute little war…..the War On Drugs……a war that has been fought for so many years that few will remember when it began……does not really matter for it is an endless war and a war that CANNOT be won…..

Let’s look at little at the monetary side of this so-called war……during 8 years of Reagan the US spent $1.86 trillion on this war…….4 years of Bush 1 went spent $1.378 trillion and in FY 1999 under Clinton went spent $140 billion….and so far this year we have spent $49 billion…..just a small overview of the money spent since 1980…….all that cash spent and we are NO closer to and end or even a win in this war…..

The War on Drugs has accomplished a few things…..as written by Nicholas Kristof of the NY Times:

First, we have vastly increased the proportion of our population in prisons. The United States now incarcerates people at a rate nearly five times the world average. In part, that’s because the number of people in prison for drug offenses rose roughly from 41,000 in 1980 to 500,000 today. Until the war on drugs, our incarceration rate was roughly the same as that of other countries.

Second, we have empowered criminals at home and terrorists abroad. One reason many prominent economists have favored easing drug laws is that interdiction raises prices, which increases profit margins for everyone, from the Latin drug cartels to the Taliban. Former presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia this year jointly implored the United States to adopt a new approach to narcotics, based on the public health campaign against tobacco.

Third, we have squandered resources. Jeffrey Miron, a Harvard economist, found that federal, state and local governments spend $44.1 billion annually enforcing drug prohibitions. We spend seven times as much on drug interdiction, policing and imprisonment as on treatment. (Of people with drug problems in state prisons, only 14 percent get treatment.)

It is beyond time to STOP wasting resources on an un-winnable war……why not legalize and tax the piss out of it….kinda like what we are doing to cigarettes?

Sad to say you mental midgets….we cannot legislate morality!  Apparently, nothing was learned during Prohibition…..how well did that war go?

A Dysfunctional System

Professor’s Classroom

Subject:  Am Government/Federalism

In the beginning there was the debate on the formation of the US Constitution….it raged in 1787 and continued for a couple years, the back and forth between the Federalist and the anti-Federalists…..finally, they settled on the checks and balances that we so cherish now of the  three branches, executive, judicial and legislative…….and for awhile it work nicely…..but that was to give way, the cooperation of the branches, into the dysfunctional family we have now…..

Partisanship has for a generation brought the functioning of the Congress to a standstill, especially the Senate, the original idea was that the Congress would listen, debate, the act on any given proposal…..that 3 part system is no longer working…there is little listening, there is absolutely NO debate and action is slowed to a pace that makes most knowledgeable people ill.  Madison warned of the result of partisanship in Federalist #10 and he also said that there were two ways of controlling factionalism, they being, to remove its causes and to control its effects.

“a number of citizens, whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.”

In today’s Congress we have extreme factionalism or partisanship, at least on the part of the GOP….the Party of NO is an accurate description……they refuse to listen….they refuse to debate…..what they call debate is nothing but misinformation that is not geared to finding answers to the problems confronting the country but rather to defeat ALL issues not theirs….this factionalism has brought the once mighty Congress to a stand still…..making many Americans doubt the validity of their claim to speak for them……

For the reason I say the Legislative branch is dysfunctional….NOTHING moves through the system as desired by the Founders, instead there are sound bites and hyperbole…little constructive……and now the American people are seeing just how much of a game Congress is…..it is controlled by forces outside the people, the ones that elected them have NO voice in what is to be done….instead it is the cash that is influencing legislation, not the needs of Americans….

With a broken legislative branch, the other two work not at all, so the cherished Federal system is NOT working properly…..Garry Wills argued against Madison and Federalist #10:

“Minorities can make use of dispersed and staggered governmental machinery to clog, delay, slow down, hamper, and obstruct the majority. But these weapons for delay are given to the minority irrespective of its factious or nonfactious character; and they can be used against the majority irrespective of its factious or nonfactious character. What Madison prevents is not faction, but action. What he protects is not the common good but delay as such.”

Read the above quote again……(time for the re-read)…….now look back at the past year of 2009 and the antics in the Senate and to a lesser extent, the House……..does it sound familiar now?  While one may like what Madison had to say, I think that the quote by Wills is far more accurate in the shedding of light on the modern legislative branch.

The Congress is NOT working in the electorates best interest……..these people are self-serving and sanctimonious ….they personally profit from special interests and in doing so they are NOT to be trusted…..also in doing so they are only pretending to do the people’s work…the extremely sad part in this game is that the people actually realize they are being duped and allow it to continue……so with that said you tell me who is more PATHETIC……the liars or the ones that allow the lie?

Set Your Watch Back 50 Years

The title is derived from something I told a friend when he wanted to visit Mississippi from Wisconsin……basically the sign would say Welcome and set your watch back 50 yrs…….I n case your are confused my state is still living in the pre-civil rights era…..

When I first heard this story it was the single thing I thought of……..

The U.S. military has dropped a controversial rule that called for punishing soldiers in northern Iraq for becoming pregnant or impregnating another soldier.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo created the rule about pregnancy, covering 22,000 people under his command in northern Iraq, including 1,682 women.

It prohibited “becoming nondeployable for reasons within the control of the soldier,” including “becoming pregnant or impregnating a soldier … resulting in the redeployment of the pregnant soldier.”

While violation of any rules in the general order could lead to court-martial, Cucolo insisted that he never intended such a drastic punishment for pregnancy.

All units have a general order that outlines a code of conduct. Commanders have been allowed to add to those rules but not allowed to make the rules any more lax.

In all cases, the women were sent back to the United States for medical care, as is military policy. Each has the right to submit a letter in her own defense to be included in her file.

Of the men involved, three were reprimanded, Cucolo said. One, a sergeant, was given a more severe punishment of a written reprimand in his permanent file because he fraternized with a subordinate and committed adultery. A letter in the permanent file can affect a person’s career because it is evaluated when a service member is considered for promotion.

Let me see if I have this right……(this is sarcasm…in case there was any confusion)

The men got a whack on their pee pee and the women could have been up for a court martial?

You have come a long way, baby………When this general got back to his office on Monday….Obama should have a note on his desk that says “I accept your resignation”….

This is the 21st century there is NO room for this mental midget……

The Last Statesman Standing

When I hear the statesmen discussed I think of something Disraeli,  “The world is weary of statesmen whom democracy has degraded into politicians.”

For a very long time I have been saying that we have many, many politicians and few, if any, statesmen……finally I have found one statesman in Washington, at least in my opinion……we have many people that are labeled as statesmen, but few live up to the title, for most of their endeavors are purely egotistical….we have Clinton or Carter or Bush 1&2, so on and on and on….none of these are statesmen.  A true statesman tells the truth and puts the good of the country above all else….name one of those…..I can wait….

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has lived up to the label of statesman…..he supported single payer and then fought for the public option and then in the end he too made a backroom deal for his support of the current health reform bill……but unlike most of the back room deals, his was not all about Vermont or whatever his was all about the American people….all of us.  His deal was:

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS, I-VT., who was angered after a new government-run health plan was dropped from the legislation to win over moderates like Nelson and Landrieu, held out on backing the bill until Reid, D-Nev., agreed to a $10 billion increase in support for community health centers.

His deal was for health centers in ALL 50 states, not just his home state……to me….that makes him a statesman…he is looking out for ALL Americans, not just some group that pays him to…..

Sen. Sanders is, when interviewed, blunt and honest….in a recent interview when asked about the bill….he stated that it was not a perfect bill but it was the best they could get because of the games and stalls that the Senate was playing….the games came from both sides….he also said that the insurance and drug companies were going to make out like bandits…..and that the US Congress was OWED by special interests…….he is very forthcoming with facts and the truth…..

His honesty is refreshing……there is nothing in Congress but lies, misinformation, games and tricks….and to hear Sen. Sanders be so honest…..well it was heart warming to know that there is at least ONE person in the Congress that is honest in his assessment of the issues……

So he, Sen. Sanders, fits my criteria of a statesman…..he works to better the lives of ALL Americans…….

“What the statesman is most anxious to produce is a certain moral character in his fellow citizens, namely a disposition to virtue and the performance of virtuous actions. ”  Aristotle

Info Ink’s Loser Of The Year

We at Info Ink already give a “Person of the Year” award and an Anal-Ocity of the Year award, the “Assie” award and this year we will start a new tradition and that is to award the “Loser of the Year”…….the award will be the thing that was the biggest loser of  the past year, whether it is prestige or money or the biggest douche bag or  whatever….it will be the largest loss…..

We were torn between oh so many……there is Tiger….then there was Madoff’s victims and then it was Chicago’s Olympic bid and on and on…there were many losers in 2009….after lots of thought and deliberation we have made our decision…….(insert drum roll here)…….

Here is the winner……..this loser has lost it all job, money, home, prestige, clout and could still lose even more…..

Info ink’s “Loser of the Year” is…….the AMERICAN TAXPAYER!

No other has lost as much as the taxpayer in this last year…they have been losing ground as the most important person in the country for years and in this last year they the tax payer or the Middle Class has lost just about everything…..these people voted en masse for the Obama promise of change….they are now losing all hope of ever seeing any change, no matter who promises it……

The loss has become uncountable and there is the main reason the the Loser of the Year is the AMERICAN TAXPAYER……..

God I Love It!–Told You So!

Daily Agitator

In the beginning there was Info Ink….back at the dawn of this “New Age” in politics there was Info Ink and he was posting on a very popular progressive site and he was told that , basically, if you did not have anything nice to say about Obama then he needed to go elsewhere…..he did…….he spent time posting that there were other choices for voters and the the promised change was pure BS and that if anyone believed the promise then they were delusional……he was attacked on all sides for not supporting a “true” progressive that had a chance to win the presidency……..

And now the head man of that progressive site is on the airwaves bitching about the non-existent changes and in the same breath defending some of the president’s actions….

Personally, I do NOT want to hear from these people….several of us bloggers warned the progressives about this….NO one listened…instead they just kept tooting the change horn……and more loudly with every criticism……Progressives?  Can you hear us NOW?  you asked for it–you flipping got it!

Just as an example….look at the newest Senate health reform version…..what part of it is progressive?  Oh the existing condition thing….oh yeah…cannot be denied, but they can charge twice or three times to premium….that is a good shot…or maybe that 30 million more people will have health insurance…..that is a good one……and the insurance companies get 30 million more customers that are ordered to buy their insurance……and then there is the anti-trust exemption….another good call….

This is a expansion of insurance not reform……if it was so bad why did PhARMA and Insurance stocks reach a 52 week high on Friday….does not sound like they are too damn upset with the Senate bill……

This bill, as is, is a boom to the insurance industry, money coming in hand over fist….it so pro-insurance could have been a bill from the GOP…….too bad they did not think of it first and maybe then there could have been a bi-partisan deal since both parties are selling out to the industry…..then everyone could be happy except for the mass of people that are getting screwed………

Granted, I realize that this may not be the final cut, so to speak, but I would bet it is damn close……..

Just maybe you Progressives should have listened to the rantings of us bloggers and you would not feel so damn betrayed by this president…Just a thought…….

Senate Concessions For Health Reform

The AP has listed what concessions Senators won as payment for their vote on health reform…….read it and weep…….

SEN. BEN NELSON, D-NEB., who provided the critical 60th vote that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needed, received numerous benefits for Nebraska, along with tighter curbs on abortion. Among the Nebraska-specific provisions:

_The federal government will pick up the full cost of a proposed expansion of Medicaid, at an estimated cost of $100 million over 10 years.

_Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska will be exempted from an annual fee on insurers; the exemption could also apply to nonprofit insurers in other states, possibly including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

_Supplemental “Medigap” policies such as those sold by Mutual of Omaha are exempted from the annual fee on insurers, something that would help other companies selling such policies.

_A physician-owned hospital being built in Bellevue, Neb., could get referrals from doctors who own it, avoiding a new ban in the Senate bill that will apply to hospitals built in the future. Without mentioning Nebraska or other states by name, the Senate bill pushes back some legal deadlines by several months, in effect making a few hospitals near completion eligible to continue receiving referrals from the doctors who own them.

SEN. MAX BAUCUS, D-MONT., chairman of the Finance Committee and a key architect of the legislation, put in a provision to help the 2,900 residents of Libby, Mont., many of whom have asbestos-related illnesses from a now-defunct mineral mine. Under Baucus’ provision, which never mentions Libby by name, sickened residents could sign up for Medicare benefits.

SEN. CHRISTOPHER DODD, D-CONN., chairman of the Banking Committee and facing a difficult re-election next year, added an item making $100 million available for construction of a hospital at a public university. The measure leaves it up to the Health and Human Services Department to decide where to spend the money. Dodd says more than a dozen sites could be eligible, but he hopes the University of Connecticut will be the beneficiary.

SEN. PATRICK LEAHY, D-VT., negotiated $600 million in additional Medicaid benefits for his state over 10 years. He said Vermont is due the additional benefits because the state already has acted to expand Medicaid eligibility to the levels now contemplated by the federal government. Vermont would be unfairly penalized if other states are now being helped with that expansion, he said. Massachusetts is getting $500 million in Medicaid help for similar reasons.

SEN. MARY LANDRIEU, D-LA., a key moderate, withheld her support from the legislation until she was able to procure Medicaid help from the federal government worth at least $100 million in 2011.

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS, I-VT., who was angered after a new government-run health plan was dropped from the legislation to win over moderates like Nelson and Landrieu, held out on backing the bill until Reid, D-Nev., agreed to a $10 billion increase in support for community health centers. (one of the few Senators that tells the truth and worked for the better of ALL Americans)

SEN. BILL NELSON, D-FLA., pushed a provision he said will let about 800,000 Florida seniors enrolled in private Medicare Advantage plans keep their extra benefits. It also helps seniors in a handful of other states. Elsewhere, Medicare Advantage patients risk losing benefits because the private plans are a major target of planned cuts to Medicare.

You see……..politicians have a price for their support of any given issue…..not only do they get the massive amounts of lobby money, but they get massive help for their states, but only if they hold out and make a name for themselves….too bad these a/holes do not work so hard all the time…..

The problem is that the rest of the country will be footing the bill for these concessions…..yet more screwing of the taxpayer……we should be use to it by now…..but it still hurts….in more ways than one….
