How To Fund A War

From the overworked mind of Chuq

Since my days in the military I have been fascinated by war…..its causes and results…….and I have also been anti-war for a host of reasons…….most of which deals with the cost of war.  The human cost and the monetary cost…….but what if they threw a war and could afford to fight it……a country could do what the US is famous for doing…..either raid a well funded program  such as social security or just fight the war on credit…….and run deficit crisis for decades to come……..

Has anyone ever considered alternative ways of funding a war?

Ever hear of crowdfunding?  In case you are not in the business of raising money let me help with the definition……..”the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet”…………yes a relative new idea for raising money but can it be used to fund a war?

Yes there is an answer to that question and the NT Times has presented the subject in a recent article…….

A high-profile New York Times article today trumpets the story that Russian NGOs are “crowdfunding” the Ukrainian Civil War, raising money to subsidize the various rebel factions in Eastern Ukraine to resist the invasion by the US-backed government.

Terrorist groups have been crowdfunding for years, and would-be ISIS recruits are regularly using crowdfunding to pay for their trips to Syria to join them. It’s not even just the one side in the ISIS war, a US-based NGO made up of former special forces has been crowdfunding an effort to pay for “humanitarian” aid to Kurdish groups, which broadly defines humanitarian aid to include “combat training.” Assyrian Christian groups on the outskirts of Mosul have similarly crowdfunding their own army to resist ISIS.

There seems to be examples for successful crowdfunding of wars and armed conflicts……maybe the US should tap into some of those that profit the most off of a “good” war like Halliburton, KBR and a wealth of other so-called defense contractors…..after all over the years they have made hundreds of billions, if not trillions,  in the business of war………. now let them foot some of the bill as they will be making money on the back end of any action.

I realize that may seem a bit farfetched but why not try this……it would keep valued and much needed programs from suffering budget cuts to help pay for a war…….as it is in the US every social program has suffered cutbacks to pay for decades of war……programs that are needed to keep the country moving forward like education, health care, infrastructure, etc.

Apparently the US will be fighting wars continuously for decades, possibly for generations, then it is time to find extra funding to save the American society from collapse.

The Myth of the Interventionist Revival by Justin Raimondo — Antiwar.com

The right wing is flush with plans and slogans to end the reign of terror that ISIS has brought onto the Middle East…….the problem is that they all involve intervention militarily……

The problem as I see it is that it was interventionism that got us to this point in history and further involvement will not make anything better.

The only winners in this “war” is the military-industrial complex (M-IC)…..after all war is big business and big business means lots of profits……I guess that leaves only interventionism as an answer to the Middle East problem……sad isn’t it?

F-35: F.U.B.A.R.

Yep……….. yet another post about the stupidity of the military and the waste of taxpayer money…………enjoy!

Anybody that has been in the military knows exactly what FUBAR means….but for those not sure….it means F*cked Up Beyond All Repair……

I have been doing a series railing against the military for their attempt to replace the most perfect close combat airplane available……the A-10 Wart Hog.

Defense contractors are winning the battle and it appears that the ‘Hog will be replaced by this expensive brick…..but some say I am being too hard on the F-35 and that it would be a good investment for the ground troops support…….and to that I replied…BULLSH*T!

Why you ask….well just a few of the things that makes it unacceptable….from a piece written by AJ Vicens………

Here are a few:

Teaching to the test: The blizzard of testing required on the plane’s equipment and parts isn’t exactly going well, so the program’s administrators are moving the goal posts. Test scores are improving because the stats are being “massaged” with tricks like not recounting repeated failures. Some required testing is being consolidated, eliminated, or postponed. “As a result,” POGO writes, “the squadron will be flying with an uncertified avionics system.”

Unsafe at any airspeed? The high-tech stuff that was supposed to make the F-35 among the most advanced war machines ever built pose serious safety risks. For example: The fuel tank system “is at significant risk of catastrophic fire and explosion in combat,” according to POGO. The plane isn’t adequately protected against lightning strikes (in the air or on the ground); it’s currently prohibited from flying within 25 miles of thunderstorms. That’s a major problem for a plane training program based in the Florida panhandle.

Flying blind: The F-35’s fancy helmet-mounted display system, which is supposed to show pilots an almost 360-degree view that includes panel controls and threat information, has “high false alarm rates and false target tracks.” Its unreliability, combined with the plane’s design, make it impossible for pilots to see anything behind or below the cockpit.

Wing drop: The DOD report points out an ongoing problem with “wing drop“: When maneuvering at high speeds, the F-35 may drop and roll to one side. This issue has been known to designers for years, and they’ve tried designing add-on parts to address the problem. The fixes, unfortunately, will “further decreas[e] maneuverability, acceleration, and range,” according to POGO.

Engine trouble: For years the F-35s engines have suffered design and performance problems, and these problems have never been fully solved. Last summer these problems resulted in one engine ripping itself apart and destroying one of the planes. At the time, officials said this was a one-time occurrence, but a permanent fix has yet to be determined and the plane may not be airworthy, according to Department of Defense regulations.

Software bugs: The plane’s software includes more than 30 million lines of code. Problems with the code are causing navigation system inaccuracies, false alarms from sensors, and false target tracks. The operating system is so cumbersome that it requires the “design and development of a whole new set of…computers.” The software glitches also affect the plane’s ability to “find targets, detect and survive enemy defenses, deliver weapons accurately, and avoid fratricide.”

More cost overruns: Due to all the testing delays, design problems, and maintenance issues, taxpayers could be on the hook for an additional $67 billion to deploy the F-35. That’s a lot of money. Even for the US military.

Yeah………..this is the perfect replacement for a time worn classic and a ship that deserves its accolades…….more than that….it is the perfect support for our ground troops that the country just has to keep in the field and under fire….

Even Congress is getting on the side of the ‘Hog…….some are speaking the truth that few in the defense contractor sector do not want to hear…….read it!

With so many taking issue with the retirement of the A-10…..why is it still on the chopping block?  My thought is….if the M-IC wants it…….. it will be so!

American grunts will pay the price and those in the M-IC do NOT CARE!

What is more important……..profits or the safety of our troops?

First Version of F-35s Won’t Outdo A-10 in Battlefield Capabilities | Military.com

This will mean little to anyone not familiar with a combat situation……bur READ IT anyway!

I have been a staunch supporter of the A-10, the Wart Hog, and opposed to the military retiring it in favor of some overpriced brick…….

The initial reports are that the A-10 replacement is too expensive and not nearly as effective as close support for our grunts…….

This report confirms what a piece of crap this plane is……I believe the grunts deserve only the best and the most effective close support ……….The F-35 are neither!

The world of threats to the US is an illusion – Opinion – The Boston Globe

Almost daily we are told about this group or that that is harboring ill feelings toward the US………matter not where one gets one’s information……it is all the same…..it incites fear and loathing and gives the admin the perfect storm for getting more money for whatever pet defense project they are pushing…..this week.

All these threats are numerous…..too numerous to list here…..but of all these threats just how reliable are they to the safety of the US?

Maybe this piece from the Boston Globe will answer some of your questions…….

Iran: My Baby Wrote Me A Letter

That was the first thing that popped into my head after the news of this moron and his moronic cronies send a letter to Iran…..the old Boxtops song…..(damn I feel old)

Between a letter written by a pack of mental midgets to the emails of Clinton….the Twitter machine is been on fire…….and of course the “usual suspects” have been having a field day with the letter especially the MSM….it seems we all have an opinion…….

Originally I asked what would the purpose of this letter be…..and now I think we will get the “rest of the story” (a Paul Harvey quote)……..

Immediately After Launching Effort to Scuttle Iran Deal, Senator Tom Cotton to Meet with Defense Contractors – The Intercept.

Okay that is enough about these morons and their letter…..moving on!

Drones: WTF?

We all are bombarded with the news that the US was eliminated this bad guy or that…..and all without the use of the military….we did this miraculous act with the use of drones……of course we could point out that they have killed more civilians than bad guys…..but that would make a great future post……

Sorry….I digress……the news has come out that the US will sell drones to our allies and friends……..that should make the defense contractors jerk off in the corner…….

If you were still skeptical about the future of drones, this should take care of that: Arms manufacturers can now get in on the action. The White House said today that it will allow the export of armed drones to other nations, reports the Washington Post. The newspaper calls the move “a significant step for US arms policy as allied nations from Italy to Turkey to the Persian Gulf region clamor for the aircraft.” To ease concerns about abuses, the State Department says it will make any nations that buy the drones pledge not to use them against their civilian populations, but instead only in “internationally sanctioned military operations,” reports the AP.

The US currently sells armed drones only to Britain, and the previous restrictions had allowed nations such as Israel to gain an early advantage in the international market, reports the Wall Street Journal. The State Department says that by allowing the exports, it can now play a bigger role in helping shape international standards on the use of military drones.

And the most amazing statement about this plan was…..it will give the US more control over their use……now think about that for a moment and I will watch some porn will you contemplate the thought…..DONE?

This single decision has just increased the number dead civilians.

Please explain to me just how the US will control the drones in other countries…….through a treaty?  Now there is a laugh we all need these days.

Say Good-Bye To Chuck

And hello to the new SecDef and a world at endless war….even more so than in the past…..

Carter has been confirmed by the Senate as the new SecDef………

The Senate easily confirmed Ashton Carter as defense secretary today, and while he’s got plenty of international problems to wrestle with, the Wall Street Journal suggests that his biggest challenge might be overcoming White House micromanagement. Predecessors Robert Gates and Leon Panetta complained of it, and Chuck Hagel was forced out after a relatively brief stint. Mitch McConnell touched on it in offering his endorsement for the 60-year-old Carter, reports AP: “The incoming secretary needs to have the courage to speak truth to power—to Congress, yes, but also to his commander in chief.”

Gates tells USA Today that it might not be a problem this time around. “The difference is that Ash has served more than five years with this administration,” he says. “So he knows this president; this president knows him. He knows all the players at multiple levels. They will be familiar to him, and he to them. That’ll make a big difference.” Carter, who happens to be a physicist by training, is expected to be sworn in as Obama’s fourth defense chief next week. In today’s 93-5 vote, only Republican Sens. Roy Blunt, Mike Crapo, Mark Kirk, John Boozman, and James Risch voted against Carter, reports Stars and Stripes.

Chuck Hagel is gone!  The only SecDef that had combat experience and knew the horrors of war first hand….now we have a physicist that will be a yes man for the M-IC……Neo-Cons rejoice…..

Oh Goody! Another Conflict For Us To Use!

Let’s take a break from the Super Bowl which I am sure that you are “totally stoked” about the outcome……and a break from snowstorms…..after all it is WINTER!

Will you were eating your “wangs” and making yourself hoarse……reality has caught up with fantasy……I am talking about the Ukrainian misunderstanding……

It seems the US cannot stay out of this situation….at all…….

With fighting between government forces and pro-Russia rebels in Ukraine intensifying once again, the US government is taking a fresh look at arming Kiev’s forces, despite the risk of Russian retaliation. Assistance so far has been limited to “non-lethal” items like body armor, but after recent setbacks for government forces, administration officials are moving closer to agreeing with NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Philip Breedlove that Ukrainian forces should be supplied with defensive arms and equipment like anti-armor missiles and armored Humvees, the New York Times reports.

An independent report from eight former senior US officials to be released today calls for sending $3 billion in equipment to Ukraine. “The West needs to bolster deterrence in Ukraine by raising the risks and costs to Russia of any renewed major offensive,” they write. “That requires providing direct military assistance—in far larger amounts than provided to date and including lethal defensive arms.” NATO says that over the last four months, the Moscow-backed rebels—who recently rejected a peace deal—have captured nearly 200 square miles of additional territory in eastern Ukraine. The latest peace talks fell apart on Saturday as more than 1,000 people fled fighting around the town of Debaltseve, while Kiev said 13 more of its soldiers had been killed, the AP reports.

Oh goody!  Another internal dispute that we feel obligated to stick our noses into…..makes few happy…..with the exception of the Military-Industrial Complex…..after all to them it is profit first and damn the consequences!
