We now have a new president….under really disturbing circumstances Joe Biden took the oath of office sans Trump in the handover (breaking another American tradition)…..
Joe Biden swore the oath of office Wednesday to become the 46th president of the United States, during an inauguration ceremony with few parallels in history. He was administered the oath by Chief Justice John Roberts as three former presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—looked on. The New York Times reports he took the oath with his hand on a family Bible that dates to 1893. It has been present at his prior swearing-ins as senator and vice president, and son Beau Biden used it when he became Delaware attorney general. Biden comes to office with a well of empathy and resolve born by personal tragedy, as well as a depth of experience forged from more than four decades in Washington. At age 78, he is the oldest president inaugurated, reports the AP.
The theme of Biden’s approximately 30-minute speech will be “America United,” and aides said it would be a call to set aside differences during a moment of national trial. Biden will then oversee a “Pass in Review,” a military tradition that honors the peaceful transfer of power to a new commander in chief. Then, Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and their spouses will be joined by that bipartisan trio of former presidents to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Later, Biden will join the end of a slimmed-down inaugural parade as he moves into the White House. In the evening, in lieu of the traditional glitzy balls that welcome a new president to Washington, Biden will take part in a televised concert that also marks the return of A-list celebrities to the White House orbit after they largely eschewed Trump.
And we also have a history making Vice President…..
For more than two centuries, men have occupied our country’s top offices. No more. Kamala Harris was on Wednesday sworn in as the first female vice president. The 56-year-old is also the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the role, reports the AP. She was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first woman of color to serve on the high court, using two Bibles: one that belonged to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the late civil rights icon whom Harris often cites as inspiration, and the other to Regina Shelton, a longtime family friend who helped raise Harris during her childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area. Harris will address the nation late Wednesday in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
Another longtime Harris friend, Lateefah Simon, tells the AP that Harris—the child of immigrants, a stepmother of two, and the wife of a Jewish man—”carries an intersectional story of so many Americans who are never seen and heard.” Her swearing-in comes almost two years to the day after Harris launched her own presidential bid on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2019. Her campaign fizzled before primary voting began, but Harris’ rise continued when Joe Biden chose her as his running mate last August. Harris had been a close friend of Beau Biden, the elder son of Joe Biden and a former Delaware attorney general who died in 2015 of cancer.
There is so much work to do…..they need to double down in their campaign promises and get to work.
The report is that there will about 25,000 troops in and around DC for the inauguration……what?
That is more troops that we have in our two longest wars….about double….the troops in DC will be there to stop any more silliness from the stupid far right.
“National Guard members are postured to meet the requirements of the supported civil authorities, up to and including protective equipment and being armed if necessary,” according to the statement. “The public’s safety is our top priority.”
Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, told reporters Monday that a force of up to 15,000 will deploy to D.C. with all their issued equipment, including their individual weapons. So if the need arises, “they are close by and they are readily accessible.”
With so many troops in and around DC for the big day….some fear for an insider attack on the day…..
Some 25,000 National Guard troops are flooding into Washington, DC, to provide extra security for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration Wednesday—and the federal government is working to ensure none of the troops represent a potential threat. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity tell the Washington Post that the FBI is working with the Army to vet the incoming troops amid fears of an “insider attack.” “We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy tells the AP. He says the Army, which already reviews members for connections to extremist groups, has been providing Guard members with additional training on identifying possible insider threats.
McCarthy says the vetting process hasn’t identified any threats from within the military so far. He says numerous service members attended President Trump’s rally before the Jan. 6 riot, but its not clear how many of them actually stormed the Capitol. The Army says it is also working with the Secret Service to determine which service members will require additional background checks, the Post reports. “There is no place for extremism in the military and we will investigate each report individually and take appropriate action,” the Army said in a statement. “The Army is committed to working closely with the FBI as they identify people who participated in the violent attack on the Capitol to determine if the individuals have any connection to the Army.”
Because of the pandemic racing through the nation and the world there has been a call for Biden to take the oath of office for the presidency virtually.
That might be a good idea these days….but this is not for Biden and has little to do with the pandemic but rather a bunch of Trump supporters that still think they can keep this useless lump as president on 20Jan2021.
With the US Capitol grounds otherwise occupied that day, supporters are planning a virtual inauguration for President Trump on Jan. 20. More than 60,000 people have indicated on the Facebook event page that they’re going, the Hill reports. It’s scheduled for noon EST, which is when President-elect Joe Biden will be taking the oath of office. The Donald J. Trump 2nd Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is to be hosted by Ilir Chami and Evi Kokalari, the page says. Kokalari’s Twitter page says she was on the Trump reelection campaign’s finance committee. She makes appearances on One America News Network, per the Independent.
Organizers put a disclaimer on the Facebook page: “We are a grassroots collection of private individuals 325,000 strong, showing our support for President Donald J. Trump. We have no affiliation with any formal organization.” There was no sign on the page that Trump endorses the event. Facebook also added a clarifying disclaimer, lest anyone think a Trump inauguration would be real: “Joe Biden is the President-elect. He will be inaugurated as the 46th US President on January 20, 2021.”
How silly is this POS?
But do not worry….there is no indication that Donald the Orange has anything to do with this move…..then why do it? (Is my question)
How far can the old Tea Party slide before they enter the pits of Hell where they belong?
I did not watch the inauguration…I would rather have watched an episode of Sesame Street I am sure that it would have made more sense than the speech….but I got call from my daughter bitching at me for not watching it…..so I broke down and watched a replay of the speech…..
Okay I lied….I refuse to watch this crap…I instead read a transcript of the speech….full transcript here.
There a few lines in the speech that were just…..(you pick the term)…..(my analysis in parenthesis)…….
“From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first. (should read corporations first)
“Jan. 20, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.” (cute…but totally BS)
“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now,” he said, after ticking off a litany of problems including poverty, crime, and “rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation.” (What about the “carnage” we are inflicting internationally?)
“For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth.” (the same people he his hiring)
“We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American.” (cool! that has been a slogan that has been around for 40 years and still means NOTHING!)
“We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon.” (best I can muster is…Hahahahaha)
“I will never, ever let you down. America is going to start winning again, winning like never before.” (every time he uses “winning” I think of the meltdown by Charlie Sheen a few years back)
“When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.” (now here is the biggest lie of the speech….his followers would not know a patriot if it bit them in the ass and prejudice is ever-present)
“We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.” (a promise he cannot and will not keep)
“The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action.” (again….Hahahahaha…this speech was as empty as my next door neighbor’s head)
“We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And, yes, together, we will make America great again.” (BULLSHIT!)
My granddaughter could have written a better speech…..this one has NO imagination just a re-hash of all the old slogans from the campaign….
But after I wrote this I decided to see what others thought of the speech….I went to the conservative National Review and read a piece written by conservative writer George Will….someone that I seldom agree with on anything….
Twenty minutes into his presidency, Donald Trump, who is always claiming to have made, or to be about to make, astonishing history, had done so. Living down to expectations, he had delivered the most dreadful inaugural address in history. Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s White House counselor, had promised that the speech would be “elegant.” This is not the adjective that came to mind as he described “American carnage.” That was a phrase the likes of which has never hitherto been spoken at an inauguration.
Finally! The day of days has arrived! The joy of joys!
The day of redemption for the human race….the day when the Master assumes his rightful place on his throne among the gods….all bow in worship…..and the peons dance…..
The day the ignorant peons on the Right have been praying for……. your day has arrived.
Today is the swearing in of our new president and I was going to write about stuff other than this silly tradition….but then my granddaughter told me that I needed to write something….some thought on this day….she is a smart one and I do as I am told…..(to appreciate that you need to have grand kids…LOL)
So for those sheep that cannot exist without knowing what the day holds…I can help….
Today, 20Jan2017, is Don’s big day…..in more ways than one……
It’s the great port-a-potty cover-up for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Workers preparing for the inauguration Jan. 20 have taped over the name of the company—”Don’s Johns”—that has long supplied portable restrooms for major outdoor events in the nation’s capital. Virginia-based Don’s Johns calls itself the Washington area’s top provider of portable toilet rentals. But the name apparently strikes too close to home for inaugural organizers. Workers have placed blue tape over the company name on dozens of portable restrooms installed near the Capitol for the inauguration, the AP reports.
The company’s name is clearly visible upon close inspection, but is blocked for a wide-angle view by a TV or still camera. The inauguration will take place on the west side of the Capitol facing the National Mall. Portable toilets set up on the east side, near Senate office buildings, do not have taped-over logos. Don’s Johns says on its website that it has provided portable toilets for many large events in Washington, including the 2009 inauguration ceremony for President Barack Obama. The company’s logos were visible during that event. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and the Presidential Inaugural Committee had no immediate comment Friday.
A CRAPPER! Gets NO better than that my friends.
Me? I will watch Orwell’s “1984” on the Vice Channel…..
Tomorrow the US gets its 45th president and as usual the inauguration will be a spectacle and a tremendous waste of money and a total ostentatious theater of hedonism …but that is what we Americans do best…piss money away and love our glitz and crap. Will I observe the farce? Not on your life I have not done so in 40 years I do not expect to change my streak.
There has been lots of noise about massive demonstrations against the Trump presidency on this day. That is not really all that original…I can remember back to 2001 and the demonstrations against the Bush2 presidency…..there were some large ones but as usual the MSM covered very little of the demonstrations……Thousands protesting Bush’s inauguration in 2001 received only 10 minutes of coverage on the major networks.
I do not expect more coverage this time around…….
On January 20—16 years ago—thousands of protesters lined the inauguration parade route of the incoming Republican president. “Not my president,” they chanted. But despite the enormity of the rally, it was largely ignored. Instead, pundits marveled over how George W. Bush “filled out the suit” and confirmed authority.
“The inauguration of George W. Bush was certainly a spectacle on Inauguration Day,” marvels Robin Andersen, the director of Peace and Justice studies at Fordham University in the 2001 short documentary Not My President: Voices From the Counter Coup.
It will be social media that carries the protests….MSM will give it usual quick reference and then move on to what celebs are kissing the ring of the newly crowned king…..the mindless part of this day will be highlighted…..over and over and……..it is what Americans crave…mindless crap!
Tomorrow we welcome the new master of the universe and bid good-bye to the old one……the day will be filled with all sorts of things and spectacles and pomp and ceremony….everything that has NOTHING to do with the governance of this country….just theater of the absurd.
Me? I will leave the play by play and the color commentary of the day to others…especially those Trump supporters……but in case you will do the same as I do and avoid this thing with all passion and would like to have an idea of what to expect….I can help…at least a bit…..
As Donald Trump is officially sworn in as America’s 45th president, his vanquished rival will have an up close and personal view of the proceedings. Hillary Clinton, along with her husband, will stand only yards away from Trump during his inauguration, with cameras trained on her, in what the Guardian describes as “a special kind of torture” for the woman who hoped to be the first female US president. Other things to expect from the day:
The Washington Post lays out the plan for what it calls “a relatively low-key affair” to be stretched over three days (President Obama’s inauguration lasted five). Trump will give a short speech, per CNN, to be followed by one of the shortest inauguration parades on record.
The New York Times explores the cost of the whole shindig, including up to $100 million in security, and where the money will come from.
Politico describes the order of Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, with performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and America’s Got Talent runner-up Jackie Evancho. Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down, Lee Greenwood, and the Rockettes will also perform at inauguration events.
Few celebrities are expected to be among the 800,000 people to attend alongside Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush, but a Presidential Inaugural Committee rep tells the Daily Beast that “we have the biggest celebrity in the world.” No, he doesn’t mean Taylor Swift.
USA Today names several Democrats who are boycotting the event, some of whom plan to attend the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday.
