Here Comes The Disinformation (Again)

It is that time of the political cycle…the Silly Season….less than 90 days prior to the general election….and the propaganda/disinformation/fake news abounds…..with NO letting up until November.

Joseph Goebbels (an infamous Nazi propagandist) said “If you lie tell a big lie and repeat it often until it becomes truth”….sounds like American politics to me.

My good friend and fellow blogger John over at Lines By Liming recently wrote about the “fake news” stuff…….his post can be read here….

Have been watching to proliferation of disinformation.fake news for years now and I have even been trying to educate my readers on how to spot the use disinformation.propaganda. fake news……just a couple of my endeavors…..

Those post of mine here on IST will help the reader understand and identify the use of disinformation….or propaganda….or fake news…call it what you like it is all the same.

But if you do not trust my take on the identifying of disinformation then maybe this will be more to your liking…..

Social media was a wonderful evolution of the digital world when it emerged in the 2000s in the form of companies like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. Connecting with old friends or family members, broadcasting your latest thoughts on Penn State football or sharing a new recipe … social media made that easy and fun to do.

But while it was winning us over by connecting us with long-lost members of our high school graduating classes, social media was also being used to share news and, just as importantly, opinions about news. Almost one-fifth of American adults (18%) “say they turn most to social media for political and election news,” according to the Pew Research Center. And what’s worse, Pew found, is that these same adults are less likely to know about topics in the news, especially involving topics like politics.

So right away, we know that people who get their news from social media are less informed than their peers who listen to news on the radio, watch it on TV or read reliable print or online publications.

The MSM is losing its place as the 4th Estate… is no longer the trusted source for news and information……

A report released this week indicates the majority of Americans believe the media plays a critical role in democracy—and think United States news outlets are failing to deliver accurate coverage.

“That’s a bad thing for democracy,” John Sands, director of learning and impact at the Knight Foundation, which conducted the study in conjunction with Gallup, told the Associated Press. “Our concern is that when half of Americans have some sort of doubt about the veracity of the news they consume, it’s going to be impossible for our democracy to function.”

According to the report,

Less than half of Americans, 44%, say they can think of a news source that reports the news objectively. Republicans who can name an accurate source overwhelmingly mention Fox News, while Democrats’ responses are more varied.

Hopefully this will help my readers understand and be able to tell when they are being fed manure dressed up as “news”……

I always return to what that Nazi Goebbels said about a lie…..tell it big and repeat that lie many times and it will become truth (paraphrase)……

The Confusion Over Masks

Should we wear masks? Or Not? Can masks help cause the virus?  Are they safe?

Questions….questions… many and so many opinions that are not really answers.

But the one statement about masks that some want to push on the population…..”forced to wear a mask is a violation of my rights”

Just how much “rights” does state laws violate?

Several hundred people assembled in London’s Hyde Park in July 2020 to protest rules making face masks mandatory in shops and supermarkets to help control the spread of COVID-19. This was not an isolated event. Similar protests have occurred in many places around the world in reaction to the prospect of “mask mandates” – especially in the United States.

These protesters are not without allies. “Anti-maskers” have elicited support from prominent figures on the political right in the UK and America: Peter Hitchens of the Daily Mail has called them “muzzles”; Michael Savage, a prominent talk radio host, called masks a “mark of submission”; to say nothing of President Donald Trump’s refusal to wear a face mask in public and his dismissal of them as “politically correct” (until his abysmal approval ratings compelled him to awkwardly soften his position).

Why do mask mandates elicit such anger?

Setting aside the conspiracy theories and disinformation that seem to prevade these protests, the participants are joined by a fierce attachment to individual liberty. They believe mask mandates sacrifice individual liberty to a collectivist notion a “greater good”.

I believe that these toads that refuse to wear masks and even commit violence to make their point are violating my rights….they could be making me ill…..

Just like freedom of speech does not give an idiot the right to scream “FIRE!” in a crowded theater that cause a panic and injures or kills others.

Speaking of “Freedom of Speech”……

Fish explains the difference between how free speech applies to the government and how it governs your relationship to your employer. And why free speech is such an issue in the academy, when the opposite should be true.

Freedom of speech may free us from some constraints, but it also frees us to say and do terrible things. When speech is free, he says, “consequences always abound.”

The High Cost of Free Speech

If these people do not want to wear a protective mask then they should stay home and do the “business” over the phone or laptop.

None of the people that think their freedoms are being violated are nothing put idiots pretending to be concerned about others….they are selfish dolts that spread disinformation.

Any thoughts?

Covid-19 Infodemic

I thought I would expose some of the BS being peddled about the Covid-19 pandemic we are fighting these days….there is enough confusion and chaos and some people just add to the confusion….to include the president of the United States…..his story changes almost daily…..

The Week has an excellent look at all the crap around this virus….

How the coronavirus sparked a tsunami of misinformation. Here’s everything you need to know:

What’s being said?

Social media has been awash in lies, rumors, and distortions about the coronavirus, its origins, and potential cures almost since the pandemic’s start. NewsGuard, a private company that rates websites’ reliability, has identified 203 websites throughout the world promoting COVID-19 misinformation. Among the most popular COVID-19 myths were “Garlic can cure COVID-19,” “A group funded by Bill Gates patented the coronavirus,” and “The COVID-19 virus is a man-made bioweapon.” The World Health Organization is calling the deluge of misinformation “an infodemic,” while Google, Facebook, and Twitter are instituting policies to help slow the spread of lies. CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook fact-checkers have “taken down hundreds of thousands of pieces of misinformation,” and slapped warnings on 40 million posts during March alone, the company says. Last week, YouTube removed a video titled “Plandemic” that had been viewed millions of times, featuring discredited microbiologist and anti-vaxxer Judy Mikovits. In the video and a book that reached No. 1 on Amazon, Mikovits contends the coronavirus was created and spread by a conspiracy of wealthy people and scientists such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to bolster vaccine rates and make money. Mikovits has been claiming her career was destroyed by Fauci and other scientists since she falsely reported in a 2009 study, later retracted by the journal that published it, that a retrovirus caused chronic fatigue syndrome.

One final thought…..all those protesters may be a major spread of the virus…..

Cellphone location data suggests that demonstrators at anti-lockdown protests – some of which have been connected with Covid-19 cases – are often traveling hundreds of miles to events, returning to all parts of their states, and even crossing into neighboring ones.

The data, provided to the Guardian by the progressive campaign group the Committee to Protect Medicare, raises the prospect that the protests will play a role in spreading the coronavirus epidemic to areas which have, so far, experienced relatively few infections.

The anonymized location data was captured from opt-in cellphone apps, and data scientists at the firm VoteMap used it to determine the movements of devices present at protests in late April and early May in five states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Colorado and Florida.

The biggest obstacle to a successful fight against this pandemic is SOCIAL MEDIA where the facts mean nothing

Fake News And More Fake News

Let me start with a thought for my readers…..”Information is NOT Knowledge”…..

If you are smart enough to watch the events of the nation and world then you are bombarded constantly by fake news/disinformation and maybe you would like to learn more on how to separate fact from bullshit……then I can help….do not take my word for what is real or fake…..there is a process…..

Fake news has been around a long time….let me help with a short history lesson…..

“Sensationalism always sold well. By the early 19th century, modern newspapers came on the scene, touting scoops and exposés, but also fake stories to increase circulation. The New York Sun’s “Great Moon Hoax” of 1835 claimed that there was an alien civilization on the moon, and established the Sun as a leading, profitable newspaper.”

False and distorted news material isn’t exactly a new thing. It’s been a part of media history long before social media, since the invention of the printing press. It’s what sells tabloids. On the internet, headline forms called clickbait entice people to click to read more, by trying to shock and amaze us. What’s more outrageous to read about than fake things that didn’t actually happen?

And then there were  some fake news that people believed without question….and I have 10 of the best…….

Today, people are worried about fake news, and its effect on politics and social issues. And with fake news sites getting better and better at looking legitimate, so it is a serious concern, especially with the rise of deepfakes making it harder to distinguish a fake person from the real deal. However, most fake news stories are actually just designed to get a rise out of people, or for a quick laugh and sophistication is rarely necessary. The truth is that people often believe things that confirm their own deeply held biases, without ever making sure the new “fact” is actually true, and we will go over ten examples of this phenomenon in today’s article.

10. Kids Smoking Bed Bugs To “Get High”

Awhile back I had a talk with my granddaughter after she asked me about fake news…..and I told her to keep in mind this graphic…..

How to Spot Fake News

If you would like this is the post about that talk we had…..

Social media has turned the lies of fake news into an art form…..and that is truly sad…..turning ignorance into usable tactic to influence.

“The freedom of press makes its influence felt not only upon political opinions but also on all men’s opinions. It modifies customs as well as laws.”
—Alexis de Tocqueville

Could that explain the popularity of disinformation?

Why are conspiracies so prevalent? Why are facts and truth so elusive to so many today? Why are people so susceptible to disinformation? Why is the current political climate so peculiar, turbulent, and divided? It is clear that there is a relationship between the disinformation that people ingest and the vitriol that some seem to spit out. These puzzling circumstances may be the result of a growing trend of postmodern thought in the United States and the world.[i] Unsurprisingly, recent reports indicate that Russia is currently interfering in the 2020 election. Though difficult to estimate, and since the country has done virtually nothing to combat it, the Russians consider their past interferences highly successful, if at nothing more than just sowing the seeds of discontent and chaos in US domestic politics.  That said, the questions still remains: why is disinformation so effective on the US population? The rise in effectiveness of Russian disinformation is directly related to the increase in postmodern thinkers amongst the US population, because postmodern thinkers are easy to manipulate. To be clear, Postmodernism is not some form of trendy, divergent thinking, but rather a serious intellectual, conceptual, cultural, psychological and philosophical engagement which challenges humanity’s engagement with itself and the world.[ii] Just as the enlightenment brought us modern thought, reason and science, postmodern thought attempts to obliterate it. It is in the national interest, for strategists to pay close attention because they will be responsible for developing strategies to survive in a postmodern strategic context. What follows is an attempted explanation of what may be the cause of many issues and phenomena in our political climate today.

A closing thought–“Stupidity Is The Deliberate Cultivation of Ignorance”
