Well no but then I have never thought that they were a good idea….but there are some out there that will defend the tariffs as a good idea for raining cash for the US….but those are the least intelligent amongst us.
According to a new study, of the $200 million the United States made from President Donald Trump’s tariffs in 2025, 96% was paid by American buyers. The study drew from data covering over 25 million transactions valued at nearly $4 trillion.
A major selling point of President Trump’s series of tariffs on other countries was that they would pay the United States for their imports and, in turn, boost the American economy. However, the study, published by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany, found the opposite occurred.
“The 2025 US tariffs are an own goal: American importers and consumers bear nearly the entire cost. Foreign exporters absorb only about 4% of the tariff burden—the remaining 96% is passed through to US buyers,” the report stated.
The study claims that while U.S. customs revenue surged by approximately $200 billion in 2025, trade volumes collapsed, and export prices did not fall. The study cited the tariff hikes the U.S. imposed on India in August 2025.
“We compared Indian exports to the US with shipments to Europe and Canada and identified a clear pattern,” Julian Hinz, Research Director at the Kiel Institute and one of the authors of the study, explained. “Both export value and volume to the US dropped sharply, by up to 24 percent. But unit prices—the prices Indian exporters charged—remained unchanged. They shipped less, not cheaper.”
Basically, the study found that instead of other countries paying the tariffs to the United States and growing the U.S. economy, American consumers faced higher prices as companies passed the tariffs on to them. The tariffs also reduced trade volumes, meaning Americans not only paid more, but they also had fewer options.

There are lots of US businesses best described as ‘penny droppers’ complaining loudly on Twitter. Trump fans who cheered the tariffs, only to realise later that they as importers had to pay them, and then pass on the extra costs to consumers. The penny has finally dropped, and now they realise (too late) how stupid they were.

Yes that seems true but it is the tariff haters that don’t understand and are so stupid. Trump is trying to get the other side to stop their rip-off trade policies. In the response to the tariff 1. we should buy less from the exporter 2. buy same product from some one else. The exporter will lose money so it will have to reduce prices which help the American importer and consumer. When they reduce price, Trump will reduce tariff. In order to keep US markets the exporter will have to continue to reduce prices to continue to sell. This is Trump’s brilliant scheme to control the exporter rip-ff and give US a more favorable balance of trade. Nobody else has rectified our unfavorable trade balance one bit for decades. Part 3. exporter must produce item here , production here, with US workers then Trump will demand no tariff. Trump has spun the table 100% to US trade victory. That’s what the tarriff haters are too simple minded to get it. Trump plan will reduce ufavorable trade balance and keep wealth here (what really really export is our wealth), factory construction here explodes and unemployment here evaporates. Trump plan is not to burdern US but to liberate US from the burden inflicted upon us . It takes a little time , howver, to erdicate US trade policy incompetence.
Please I am not stupid and I can say the same for anyone that embraces these failed policies….little industry has returned….farmers have no customers….deficit is rising not lowering….the only simple minds are those pea brains that are blinded by BS…..chuq

Do you have any suggestions on how to rectify US unfavoragle balance of trade which affets all US consumers for decades? Seems no other administration has tried or ever recognized the problem exists ?
Curious what the problem is…I am all for manufacturing coming back to the US, but tariffs have never proven an effective tool and in fact cause inflation and unemployment…history proves it over and over and over again
