For The ‘Scum’

Yesterday was Memorial Day and as usual Donny had lots to say……on the day we are suppose to remember our fallen heroes Donny went off the rails about Biden and other stuff that had little to do with our dead.

“Happy Memorial Day!” President Trump wrote on Monday morning. A bit later came the fiery elaboration, reports USA Today: “Happy Memorial Day to all, including the scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country through warped radical left minds,” Trump wrote in an all-caps post. He also blasted former President Biden as “incompetent” because of his border policies, which he says continue to be helped by “USA hating judges that is sick, and very dangerous for our country.”

Providing some context to the criticism, the Hill notes that a federal judge on Friday demanded that the White House facilitate the return of a third deported man—after complaining that the deportation “lacked any semblance of due process.” In his Memorial Day post, Trump described such judges as “monsters who want our country to go to hell.” He ended by promising that “America will soon be safe and great again!” Trump will speak later Monday at Arlington.

I worry that Memorial Day is personal to a smaller and smaller number of Americans. As a national community, Americans may no longer have the ability to collectively remember and honor shared sacrifice, because the sacrifice is not shared. The all-volunteer force created a military that is self-selecting. The wars of 9/11 created many veterans who are self-regarding and condescending to those who haven’t served in the military. A 2020 National Opinion Research Center survey found that a full 60 percent of post-9/11 veterans “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that the eligible Americans who did not volunteer to serve during wartime should feel guilty, compared to just 43 percent of older veterans and 22 percent of civilians. That is dangerous for the country.

At times, it is as though Americans compete to see who can be the most bombastically patriotic in remembering their war dead. Remembrance should be a solemn acknowledgment of the tragedy of war and the nobility in serving one’s country in its armed forces.

The day is not the time to air some idiotic political bullshit….but that never stopped the moron in the WH.

Memorial Day 2025 (Observed)

First off I would like to wish a wonderful day and a safe one for my readers.

Second we all should take a few moments to remember those that gave their all in the service of their country…..something we seem to forget most times.

I know I will take some time and toast those friends that I lost in Vietnam….My Better Half, Sue, was also a veteran and today is her day in my house….but that is just me.

What would veterans say to Little Donny on this day?

This Memorial Day comes a month after the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, which was largely used to recall the collapse of the entire American project in Vietnam. In short, the failure of the war is now viewed as both a rebuke of the American Exceptionalism myth and the rigid Cold War mentality that had Washington in a vice grip for much of the 20th Century.

“The leaders who mismanaged this debacle were never held accountable and remained leading players in the establishment for the rest of their lives,” noted author and professor Stephen Walt in a RS symposium on the war. “The country learned little from this bitter experience, and repeated these same errors in Iraq, Afghanistan, and several other places.”

Today, after 20 years of those post-9/11 wars, the American people — including many of the veterans who fought there — have seemingly got the message. In poll after poll, they reject the use of force as the first tool in the toolbox. They eschew the idea of prospective war with Iran, and China over Taiwan.

But do our leaders “get it”?

Donald Trump swept into office in 2016 on the idea that he would end “endless” conflict and shared the national disdain for being lied to in order to invade Iraq, and for spreading American troops too thin to fight Washington’s wars of choice overseas. Now in his second term he has made similar exhortations — recently he rebuked the “neocons” who “spent trillions and trillions of dollars failing to develop Kabul, Baghdad, and so many other cities” in his recent Middle East trip.

His Vice President JD Vance is a veteran who has admonished the interventionist impulses of the past. Delivering the commencement speech to West Point’s class of 2025 on Friday, he said his boss wants only to send men and women into conflict with clear goals rather than “undefined missions” and “open-ended conflicts” of the past.

This government is a con job just like most so-called governments…..when making war is more important than a starving child then this country has taken too steps backwards.

People died in service to their nation and that is what we should remember on this day not the unofficial beginning of Summer with BBQ and beer.

This will be my only post today for there are things that I need to do plus it will most likely be a slow day here on IST as others celebrate the day in their own way.

I wish everyone a great day and as always….Be Well and Be Safe….

Last Week At The Sh*t Show–25May25

The Memorial Day Weekend continues…..

Things are becoming typical for the administration…..EOs, accusations, shuddering government offices, etc….there was so much silliness that it was difficult to decide what to include in this week’s post.

The big news from last week was the dinner that Donny had with the big investors in  his private crypto scam…..

President Trump will be dining at his DC golf club on Thursday, and he won’t be alone. With him will be the 220 top holders of his memecoin $TRUMP, reports Reuters.

  • One of those guests will be Justin Sun, a crypto entrepreneur who is the top $TRUMP investor of all. He tweeted this week that he is Trump’s “TOP fan” and will be at the dinner. The BBC explains why his presence is notable: The SEC under President Biden accused him of fraud and market manipulation, but that inquiry has been put on hold by the Trump administration.
  • The dinner—as well as the digital currency itself and the contest that encouraged people to buy them up in order to meet the president—has drawn lots of criticism from those who say Trump is using his presidency to make a personal profit, reports NBC News.
  • “This is the Mount Everest of American corruption,” Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, who will attend a protest outside the dinner, tells Politico. “This isn’t about raising money for a campaign. This is about personal profit, and what he’s selling is influence on himself and his Cabinet and the US government.” The White House, however, dismisses the criticism and says Trump abides by all conflict-of-interest laws. Trump is “working to secure GOOD deals for the American people, not for himself,” says a spokesperson.
  • A New York Times investigation found that most of those who will be in attendance are based outside the US.

You caught that right?  Investor in HIS scam…..not that it has anything to do with running this country….when will this asshole start working for the country?   Here’s a clue….NEVER!

If you will recall Donny was under investigation for possible corruption and now the unit that did these types of investigations has been ordered to shut down..

The FBI squad that investigates allegations of fraud and corruption against members of Congress and other federal employees is being shut down. The unit worked on the leadup to special counsel Jack Smith’s election fraud investigation of Donald Trump and his allies, NBC News reports. The move is another in a series by the Trump administration against units and officials handling public corruption cases, per the New York Times. Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley recently complained to FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi that the unit had been misused to execute political attacks, especially against Trump, and Grassley praised the decision. An advocate for Justice Department employees did not.

“This is yet another sign that it’s open season for political corruption,” said Stacey Young of Justice Connection, a network of department alumni. “The administration gutted the Public Integrity Section, neutered the US Attorney’s Office in DC, and is now shuttering the FBI’s pre-eminent federal public corruption squad. This isn’t what voters had in mind when they heard, ‘drain the swamp.'” An FBI official said the Washington field office is being reorganized, per the AP, and added that investigations into alleged corruption will continue.

But members of the squad apparently will be reassigned, per the Times, possibly to do immigration enforcement work. The special agent in charge of criminal matters at the Washington field office also was ousted from his job. Patel is shifting FBI resources into immigration enforcement, per NBC, in keeping with Trump’s priorities. More changes at the Washington office are on the way, an FBI official said.

Retaliation plain and simple….plus it gives a nod to his wealthy butt boys.

Speaking of investigations……Donny wants some because his feelings got hurt and in his butt hurt temper tantrum…..

President Donald Trump has called for a “major investigation” into Bruce Springsteen night after the rock legend delivered a scathing critique of the president during his UK tour.

In a Truth Social post late Sunday night, Trump accused Springsteen of having been paid by former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris for a campaign performance and endorsement – without offering any evidence.

Trump also floated similar claims about Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, and U2 frontman Bono, all of whom publicly supported Harris or the Democrats during the 2024 election.

The president wrote:

HOW MUCH DID KAMALA HARRIS PAY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR HIS POOR PERFORMANCE DURING HER CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT? WHY DID HE ACCEPT THAT MONEY IF HE IS SUCH A FAN OF HERS? ISN’T THAT A MAJOR AND ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION? WHAT ABOUT BEYONCÉ? …AND HOW MUCH WENT TO OPRAH, AND BONO??? I am going to call for a major investigation into this matter. Candidates aren’t allowed to pay for ENDORSEMENTS, which is what Kamala did, under the guise of paying for entertainment. In addition, this was a very expensive and desperate effort to artificially build up her sparse crowds. IT’S NOT LEGAL! For these unpatriotic “entertainers,” this was just a CORRUPT & UNLAWFUL way to capitalize on a broken system. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!

Trump Demands ‘Major Investigation’ Into Springsteen, Beyoncé, Oprah for Backing Kamala Harris: ‘CORRUPT & UNLAWFUL!’

What foolishness….but then that is one of Donny’s traits…..being foolish.

When questioned about the slash in food assistance Donny went off the rails….

Donald Trump seems to think that cuts to food assistance mean cheaper and more abundant food for everyone.

“You campaigned on lowering the price of groceries. How can you justify cutting food assistance in this [budget] bill?” a reporter asked the president, on Capitol Hill Monday, after he emerged from a meeting with House Republicans.

The president’s response didn’t make any sense.  (Nothing he says makes much sense if you have a functioning brain)

“Let me just tell you, the cut is going to give everybody much more food because prices are coming way down. Groceries are down,” Trump said. He added, “You know that eggs now? Way down. Everybody’s buying eggs. Grocery’s down. Energy’s down. Gasoline? They’re now buying—they’re buying gasoline now for $1.99.”

First of all, gasoline is not selling for that price anywhere in the United States, except possibly in wholesale markets. And cuts to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, commonly referred to as food stamps, would not lower food prices. As the head of a Nevada food bank told NBC last month, “These reductions don’t just affect people facing hunger—they also hurt the retailers, farmers, and businesses that supply fresh, local food to our region.”

Do people still think he knows what he talks about in these babbling rants?

Recently Donny went after internet access…..

An initiative started under former President Biden to expand internet access in communities with lousy access might be on the rocks. President Trump said Thursday he intends to end the Digital Equity Act, reports Bloomberg. “No more woke handouts based on race!” Trump wrote in a scathing Truth Social post, one in which he also called the program “totally unconstitutional” and an “illegal” $2.5 billion giveaway. “I am ending this immediately,” Trump wrote in all-caps.

However, the New York Times reports that court challenges are certain. The newspaper, along with Newsweek, notes that the law signed by Biden does not emphasize race. The measure was part of a $1 trillion infrastructure bill signed by Biden, and it’s administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Its stated goal is to “ensure that all people and communities have the skills, technology, and capacity needed to reap the full benefits of our digital economy,” according to an NTIA website.

Trump’s move is part of his administration’s sweeping push against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, but a post at Broadband Breakfast suggests that the internet-access initiative doesn’t fit into the usual framework of DEI programs. The terms “digital inclusion” and “digital equity,” it notes, “date back to the launch of the movement for public computer centers and ensuring that poorer, less-educated, and less tech-savvy individuals also enjoyed the benefits of computing and communication.” It was not immediately clear if any grants had yet been canceled.

All rural people need to suffer to make sure that people of color in rural areas cannot have access to the internet…..what a f*cking racist!

Then out of the mouth of #2, Donny’s butt boy…..Vance….it seems he wants to control your dating habits….

Dating can be awful, a fact we already know. Now, the vice president is weighing in on the matter, blasting the apps that he believes make the process much worse. “If you look at basic dating behavior among young people … the dating apps are probably more destructive than we fully appreciate,” JD Vance said in a wide-ranging interview with Ross Douthat for the New York Times. “Technology has just for some reason made it harder for young men and young women to communicate with each other in the same way.” The 40-year-old VP, who Mashable notes met his wife Usha in law school, also offered a clue as to why dating struggles are even on his mind.

“Our young men and women just aren’t dating, and if they’re not dating, they’re not getting married, they’re not starting families,” he said. The topic was broached as part of a larger discussion about artificial intelligence, with its potential for “profoundly dark and negative” consequences in an online romantic sense, in Vance’s eyes. “One of the great things about marriage in particular is you have this other person, and you just have to kind of figure it out together,” Vance noted. “But if the other person is a chatbot who’s just trying to hook you to spend as much time on it, that’s the sort of stuff that I really worry about with AI.”

He talked to the pope about this?  You mean with all the strife in the world and this idiot wanted to talk about dating habits?

Again I am so proud of our government.  (sarcasm)

Finally….the penny is going the way of the dodo…..

The end of the American penny is near: The US Mint will stop making new ones within a year, reports the Wall Street Journal. Specifically, the Treasury Department this month ordered its last “blanks” from which the pennies are made, and it won’t make any more once those blanks are gone, per CNN. That’s expected to be in early 2026.

  • Context: The penny has long been a source of debate in terms of usefulness, particularly since it costs nearly 4 cents to make one, and many end up under couch cushions. The US Mint produced more than 3 billion pennies last year and lost more than $85 million in the process, per Axios.
  • Impact: People will still be able to use pennies as long as they have them. But as the supply continues to shrink, stores will likely have to start adjusting their pricing, notes the Journal.
  • Trump: The move is a follow-up on President Trump’s directive in February. “For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” Trump wrote at the time, understating the cost. “This is so wasteful!

There is the round-up of the week that was at the Sh*t Show….we have so much to be proud of…..and this government is not one of them.

Be careful if you are celebrating this Memorial Day weekend.

IST Saturday News Dump–24May25

So begins Memorial Day weekend.

Another week is coming to an end and there are reports/stories that need to see the light of day….and that is why I am here to turn the light on for my readers.

Locally–the weather down here is getting summer-like the highs are in the 90s and the lows in the high 70s or low 80s…..so I want to pass on a heat advisory…..It is suggested that because of the heat and the heat index that we stay indoors and in A/C from 11 am today until the 3rd of November…..it is getting that damn HOT!

I recently reported that egg prices were coming down at the time I could not verify it….since then I have gone to the store and down here prices are down….a half dozen large are going from $4 to $1.90…..of course jumbos and organic are still a bit higher.

My state of Mississippi does it again….we are ranked last in teacher’s pay and that includes the meager pay raise teachers got just last year.  I am so proud.

Personal–A bit of good news….the tumor in my lung has shrunk which is good news….but not enough for me to forego the infusions and shots….waiting for the scan to see how the one in the prostrate is doing.  Fingers crossed.

Let’s start today with my favorite subject….food.

Eggs!  We all know about the high cost of eggs…..we eat quail, duck and chicken eggs….but why not turkey eggs?

Turkeys often find themselves at the center of our plates, much like many other domesticated birds classified as poultry. We rely on these animals for a range of products, from bedding and clothing to, most commonly, food. Eggs, in particular, are a staple in many diets. But it got us thinking: why don’t we eat turkey eggs?

In the United States alone there are around 2,500 turkey farms. That’s a lot of turkeys, and presumably a lot of eggs, but they don’t enter the egg market because, frankly, they’re not worth it.

A healthy chicken can lay an egg almost daily, making the *ahem* paltry 32-hour turnover of a turkey seem like a poor yield. Add to that, it takes turkeys seven months to mature to egg-laying age compared to chicken’s five-month waiting period, and they just aren’t as attractive a source for poultry farmers hoping to sell eggs.

Turkey eggs are edible, just ask turkey farmers. According to Modern Farm, they’re reported to taste very similar to a chicken egg, only a bit bigger with a tougher shell and thicker membrane.

The more icky diet….

When we think about the future of food, it’s unlikely that crickets, meal worms or grasshoppers come to mind. But believe it or not, insects might just be one of the most promising answers to two big global problems: feeding a growing (and ageing) population and fighting climate change. As the world’s population heads towards 10 billion by 2050, we’re going to need a lot more food – and especially more protein.

In Ireland, where our research was based, this matters even more because our population is ageing. Older adults need more protein to stay healthy and independent as they age, but often they don’t eat enough of it.

At the same time, we also have to take care of the planet. Producing traditional protein sources like beef, pork and chicken uses up a lot of land, water and energy – and creates a lot of greenhouse gases.

So, where do insects fit in?

https://theconversation.com/insect-protein-could-support-healthy-ageing-and-fight-climate-change-255894

I grew up in the South and a daily staple was rice….and now there is bad news for rice….

Samples of store-bought rice from more than 100 different brands purchased in the United States contained dangerously high levels of arsenic and cadmium, according to a new report shared first with CNN.

“Even at low levels, both arsenic and cadmium have been linked to serious health harms, including diabetes, developmental delays, reproductive toxicity and heart disease,” said coauthor Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures. The organization, which is dedicated to reducing children’s exposure to toxic chemicals, produced the report.

“Heavy metal contamination in young children is especially concerning, as early-life exposures are associated with reduced IQ and a range of cognitive and behavioral problems,” Houlihan said.  (that could explain MAGA supporters)

Carbs are the enemy of anyone with diabetes…..but there is news about the eating of carbs….

The quality of your carbs matters more than you think. High-quality carbs from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes were consistently associated with better odds of aging well — staying mentally sharp, physically active, and free of major diseases. In contrast, diets high in refined carbs — think white bread, sugary snacks, and processed foods — were linked to worse outcomes.

“We’ve all heard that different carbohydrates can affect health differently, whether for weight, energy, or blood sugar levels. But rather than just look at the immediate effects of these macronutrients, we wanted to understand what they might mean for good health 30 years later,” said Andres Ardisson Korat, a scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging and lead author of the study. “Our findings suggest that carbohydrate quality may be an important factor in healthy aging.”

But what does that mean, exactly?

https://www.zmescience.com/science/news-science/healthy-aging-carbohydrates-variety/

Next on the health front….

When Biden announced that he was suffering with prostrate cancer there was a rush to Google to explain what a prostrate was….

What, exactly, does that mean? A bunch of Americans have apparently been trying to figure that out.

Google search queries for the phrase “what is a prostate” drastically spiked following news about the former president’s cancer diagnosis, as flagged on Bluesky by The Onion writer June Sternbach.

The trend suggests that the sad news about America’s 46th president didn’t just spark inquiry over prostate cancer and what it means, but that a surprising number of US citizens are unclear on what a prostate even is, which may unfortunately be a glaring indictment of American health education.

Men you might want to make a date with your urologist and have yours checked out.

These days we hear a lot about probiotics and prebiotics  from yogurt to supplements….but just what is the scoop?

“Prebiotics are anything you consume that beneficial gut bacteria can consume to produce byproducts that promote health,” Suzanne Devkota, the director of the Human Microbiome Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai, told Popular Science. Put another way, they’re food for the “good” bacteria that call your gut home. “The most widely accepted prebiotic is dietary fiber,” said Devkota. “Probiotics, on the other hand, are beneficial bacteria you consume in hopes they colonize your gut.”

My state is plagued with STDs by the many….

In a state where citizens are plagued with a myriad of public health issues, another report points to the poor sexual health of Mississippians.

In 2023, healthcare officials ranked Jackson fourth nationally for new HIV cases. Those statistics likely contributed to Mississippi having the most cases of sexually transmitted diseases per capita nationally that year. Two years later, a Universal Drugstore report shows that conditions have not changed. The website found that the state is still the most affected by STDs in 2025.

The latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that Mississippi has the second-highest chlamydia rate nationally. Additionally, the state has the lowest HPV vaccination rate in the United States.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), the largest and only known cause of cervical cancer is HPV. CDC data reveals that Mississippi has the highest mortality rate from cervical cancer nationally. Persisting HPV infections are also largely responsible for most anal, oropharyngeal, penile, vaginal and vulvar cancers.

Malaria is a world problem and now there may be some lighjt in the eradication of the disease….

What if, instead of killing mosquitoes to stop malaria, we simply cured them? Harvard scientists believe giving mosquitoes anti-malarial drugs could turn these notorious disease-carriers into harmless biters. Malaria, a parasitic disease spread by female mosquitoes, causes nearly 600,000 deaths annually, most of them children, and traditional prevention efforts have focused on insecticide-coated bed nets, which work by creating a physical barrier and killing mosquitoes that land on them, per the BBC.

Harvard researchers tested a variety of drugs on malaria-infected mosquitoes and identified two that kill all parasites when absorbed through the insect’s legs. The idea is to add these drugs to bed nets, so even if a mosquito survives contact, it will no longer be able to spread malaria. Study co-author Alexandra Probst calls the research laid out in the journal Nature a novel approach, noting that the malaria parasite is less likely to develop resistance to these drugs due to the limited number of them found in each mosquito compared to an infected human.

Lab results look promising: The drug treatment lasts up to a year on treated materials, potentially making it a durable and cost-effective alternative to current methods. The next phase—testing these drug-coated nets in real-world conditions—will start in Ethiopia. Results aren’t expected for at least six years, but the hope is to eventually use both drugs and insecticides on nets, providing a two-pronged strategy against malaria transmission. “Malaria control desperately needs innovation,” study co-author Flaminia Catteruccia says in a release. “This is a momentous step forward in the development of a new mosquito-targeted malaria control strategy.”

Finally, would like to see in the dark?  Now you can.

Neuroscientists and materials scientists have created contact lenses that enable infrared vision in both humans and mice by converting infrared light into visible light. Unlike infrared night vision goggles, the contact lenses, described in the journal Cell, do not require a power source—and they enable the wearer to perceive multiple infrared wavelengths. Because they’re transparent, users can see both infrared and visible light simultaneously, though infrared vision was enhanced when participants had their eyes closed.

“Our research opens up the potential for noninvasive wearable devices to give people super-vision,” says senior author Tian Xue, a neuroscientist at the University of Science and Technology of China. “There are many potential applications right away for this material. For example, flickering infrared light could be used to transmit information in security, rescue, encryption or anti-counterfeiting settings.”

That does it for this Saturday….hopefully everyone found something informative and/or entertaining today….I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend…..and as always….Be Well and Be Safe….

Expensive Being A Meat Eater

For most people it is grilling season….I grill year round so I am in the middle of my season…..but it is Memorial Day weekend the unofficial start of Summer and the grilling season.

All across America grills are being fired up in preparation for those burgers or steaks or chicken…..and there may be a future that is not too pleasing.

I am a die hard meat eater…..although I am not a big fan of lamb but all others will be on my menu at some point…..my favorite is bison but it is already expensive.

So when I read a report about the possible coming of more price hikes on meat I was just shaking my head….

Plenty of grocery staples are going to start costing more in 2025 thanks to inflation, supply chain disruptions, and the implementation of President Donald Trump’s proposed trade tariffs. Meat is one grocery item that’s frequently imported from other nations, and as a result, consumers will see its cost rise as these tariffs take effect. From poultry to veal, meat across the board is about to get more expensive — even Costco foods like beef and seafood will likely start to see price changes.

While these tariffs, which charge international companies to export goods to the U.S., will theoretically raise the nation’s revenue and stimulate domestic production, the reality is that this higher cost of offshore trade will likely get passed onto consumers through elevated in-store and online prices. In some cases, countries have responded with retaliatory tariffs. China, for example, announced a tariff boost from 34% to 84% (and eventually up to 125%) on imported U.S. goods, though fortunately, both countries agreed in May to significantly slash these respective increases, if only for a three-month period.

While tariffs are not the direct reason for every jump in price across the industry, they may prompt ripple effects when combined with other economic and environmental factors. Here are the meats worth keeping an eye on.

Let’s begin with my favorite…..beef….

Certain types of beef, like wagyu and Kobe (a variety of wagyu), are known to be expensive. But more affordable varieties, like ground beef and sirloin steak, have long been meal staples for those watching their spending, as they’re filling, high in protein, and generally quite accessible. In the coming months, however, these go-to foods might pose a budgeting issue for the average American consumer.

Since the start of the pandemic, supply chain issues have already boosted the cost of bovine meat, and while that particular industry challenge has eased somewhat, new economic difficulties are once again threatening to place this ingredient out of reach for some. The domestic cattle population, which currently sits at around 86 million, is the lowest it’s been since 1951, according to USDA data. Imported beef from countries like Canada and Mexico helps fill out the U.S. supply — a boon during summer grilling season when U.S. demand for beef is at its peak — but 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports may result in higher costs getting passed onto consumers. Additionally, in May 2025, President Donald Trump suspended Mexican beef imports for 15 days following an outbreak of screwworm among the country’s cattle, further straining trade relations.

According to data from the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, the average price for a pound of beef in April 2025 was $5.80 — an increase of nearly 13% from the previous year (via USA Today). Over the course of 2025, the USDA forecasts that beef prices will continue to rise at least 6.3%.

Veal

Veal is essentially a younger, more expensive version of beef. It comes from male calves, specifically those that are under 18 weeks old. Like lamb, there’s plenty of controversy surrounding the production and consumption of veal, but it remains a staple on restaurant menus and in butcher shops across the country.

Like beef prices, the cost of veal is expected to rise at least 6.3% over the course of 2025, according to USDA data. The agency states that “tight supplies and continued consumer demand” are the cause of increases across the bovine meat industry, and one reason for this tight supply is consistent drought. According to the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), the latter half of 2024 set drought records, with all states experiencing some level of dryness except for Alaska and Kentucky. Since some domestic beef producers grow their own cattle feed, lack of precipitation often leads to less food and smaller herds.

A swell of inflation in January 2025 and proposed tariffs affecting U.S.-Mexico trade will no doubt also play a role in elevated veal costs. As Jason Walker, co-owner of California’s StarWalker Organic Farms, told The New York Post in February 2025, current record-high prices at cattle auctions are great, “If you’re selling cattle … If you’re buying cattle, it’s not a great thing.” As more ranchers attempt to sell, their herd sizes continue to shrink, thus perpetuating the cycle.

Pork

As beef prices rise, many consumers may start opting for more affordable proteins like pork. There are plenty of ground pork recipes you can make on repeat to get as much value as possible out of this ingredient, but it’s still not immune to the effects of economic upheaval. Per USDA data, pork prices will likely rise at least 1.8% over the course of the year, and while this may seem negligible considering larger projected increases like those affecting beef, people grocery shopping on a budget are likely to feel the squeeze regardless.

Increased demand due to seasonal shifts in consumer behavior may also impact prices. In May 2025, economist David Anderson, Ph.D. told National Hog Farmer that the meat industry gets “a seasonal run going into Memorial Day” and that “demand during grilling season can influence prices across most everything beef, poultry, and pork.” Furthermore, data shared by the USDA in April indicates that domestic pork production in 2025 will equal just 28.1 billion pounds — a 350 million-pound drop from March projections. Dips in production paired with increasing demand may signal further price hikes.

As a result of the ongoing trade war, pork exported from the U.S. into China also faces a potential 81% tariff, which may threaten profit margins and supply in the American hog industry. While tensions appear to be easing as certain tariffs are slashed, market uncertainty remains.

Chicken

While some consumers may find themselves relying more heavily on chicken as an affordable protein source as red meat prices continue to rise, that affordability may only be relative. USDA data indicates that throughout 2025, the price of chicken will likely increase by about 1%. This isn’t a huge margin, but as other grocery staples also grow more costly, higher chicken prices will only contribute to financial strain for many shoppers.

Both labor shortages and the increased price of feed have raised overall production costs in the poultry industry, and these increases will likely become evident throughout the year as chicken products receive heftier price tags. While tariffs won’t necessarily factor into these increases directly, this was a possibility when China’s tariffs on U.S. poultry exports from companies like Tyson Foods and Pilgrim’s Pride were on the rise back in April. Regardless of direct tariff impact, American consumers’ increased reliance on this bird is hard to disentangle from rising beef costs.

In the short term, chicken prices may also rise to meet demand leading up to summer occasions like Memorial Day. Beef is the most popular meat to grill over the holiday weekend according to data shared by GV Wire in 2024: On average, 34% of people named steak as their meat of choice for Memorial Day that year, and while burgers came in second with 19%, chicken managed to snag third place with a respectable 18% (beating out ribs with 11% and hot dogs with just 5%).

Turkey

Much like chicken, turkey is another type of poultry that will see price increases throughout 2025. The USDA’s 101st Annual Agricultural Outlook Forum highlighted “declines in turkey production” in 2024, resulting from decreased prices over the two previous years. In turn, this reduced production — now forecast to decrease 3% in 2025 for an annual total of 4.97 billion pounds — is slated to drive up turkey prices during the year. The agency also noted declines in turkey exports during 2024, which may further strain availability.

Furthermore, in late April 2025, the Veterinary and Food Administration confirmed the presence of avian influenza in certain turkey products imported from Denmark. As health authorities continue attempts to quell a similar virus in chickens — the same one driving up the cost of eggs nationwide — the U.S. turkey industry might experience changes in supply and, as a result, price.

As far as tariffs are concerned, turkey does not appear subject to the same rise in costs Americans are seeing for other protein staples. Much U.S. turkey is produced domestically, and in fact, according to USDA data, chicken is the more commonly imported poultry. For example, between May 4 and 10, 2025, 367 metric tons of turkey were imported to the U.S. exclusively from Canada, whereas chicken imports from Canada, Chile, and Mexico clocked in at 1,599 metric tons over the same period. With President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports in effect, however, turkey prices may continue to fluctuate.

Fish

The seafood market was seemingly one of the first to see effects from President Donald Trump’s tariffs. By mid-April 2025, U.S. fish vendors were noticing price increases across the industry, especially on products from places like Canada and Brazil. Imports from countries across Asia, such as China, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia, are also likely to see price changes. Steep tariffs on items like cod, halibut, and swordfish have upended production for many vendors, who must now seek out alternative trade partners to keep consumer prices in check.

Norway, a major salmon supplier for the U.S., has faced a 15% tariff since April. According to SalmonBusiness, this could drive up prices by $7 or more per fish. Demand for domestic seafood options will likely rise as these tariffs take effect, and this in turn could further impact prices as well as local supply. According to April 2025 data from Expana, salmon fillets exported from Europe saw a 12% price increase over the course of a week, while Chilean fillet exports rose 6% over the same period. The time-sensitive nature of transporting non-frozen fish may also exacerbate these industry changes. Prices will no doubt continue to fluctuate as trade negotiations continue — especially since about 85% of seafood in the U.S. is imported, according to WFAE.

Shellfish

Much like fish such as salmon and halibut, shellfish is another type of seafood that will see major price shifts as a result of tariffs. Shrimp, lobster, crab, and scallops are just some of the items in this category that have already seen price surges as international vendors navigate new trade limitations.

As an example, let’s take a look at the shrimp industry, which will see tariffs ranging from 10% to 32%. One reason these increases will notably affect shoppers is that most of the shrimp Americans consume annually — over 90%, according to The New York Times — is imported from countries like India, Indonesia, Ecuador, and Vietnam. While Ecuador is only subject to 10% tariffs as of this writing, the other countries listed are (or initially were) subject to much higher rates. Indonesia, for example, could see tariffs as high as 32% under President Donald Trump’s plan, thus making consumer goods imported from the island nation that much more expensive. Vietnam, meanwhile, would have been subject to 46% tariffs before negotiations slashed this number to 10%.

Not everyone in the shellfish industry is pessimistic about these changes, however. The East Coast Shellfish Growers Association expressed support for higher import tariffs in a March 2025 letter to an assistant U.S. trade representative, citing “substantial government subsidies and reduced regulatory costs” as two major advantages offshore competitors have over U.S. shellfish farms — advantages the group believes tariffs would remedy. Other entities like Get Maine Lobster emphasize that domestic shellfish options will remain tariff-free amid a shifting international market.

Conflict Of Interests

+++Warning:  This is a personal opinion piece and because of my frustration I will be using some colorful language….so if you are offended by such words then I suggest that you forego this post and move on….You have been warned+++

I have been writing about the antics of Donny and his merry band of goons and it amazes me to see how many people either are fucking ignorant or just do not care as long as he, Donny, is not a Democrat that they would allow these offenses to go unchallenged.

Before I get some lame ass comments about the antics of Dems in the past, which I am sure someone will just have to show their hatred for the party…..let me say address the subject of this post if they cannot fucking do that then please go back top sitting around in your MAGA hat drinking cheap beer and hating everything that is not Trumpian.

Since January Donny has been doing nothing that does not personally benefit him or the Trump Organization which is shit….for until dipshit showed up and conned the idiot voters his personal finances were put into blind trust until he left office….which in my opinion is one fucking good idea.  Donny is in pursuit of personal enrichment at the expense of the rest of us poor fucking peons.

But that fucking said let’s look at the conflict of interests that this ‘person’ is doing almost daily.

This list was compiled by the magazine the Week….and please no one in their right fucki8njg mind could accuse this publicat6ioon of being Leftist….if you do then you are illustrating your goddamn ignorance.

President Donald Trump has been at the center of ethics concerns going all the way back to his 2016 candidacy, largely as a result of his strong business ties that critics say could represent significant conflicts of interest. These conflicts, many of which have to do with his Middle East dealings, have continued to cast a shadow over his presidency amid his second term in the White House.

Middle East dealings

+++Please read the entire article before you think you can counter the accusations….if you cannot do that then stay out of the comments.++

If someone wants to give me some stupidity like a ‘what about’ let me say right here and now….I have NO love for the Dems and it has been that way since 1992 and the voter sent that idiot Bubba Clinton to the White House and because of him and his bunch of Fat Cats we have this absolutely worthless party in Congress….they are a boated piece of shit that deserves NO praise from anyone.

Reality shows that if this was a Dem president pulling this breech of the ethics the GOP would be having a fucking stroke and screaming louder than a pig at slaughter….but since it is Donny then all is quiet on the ethics front all because of hatred and biases and lies and the idiot loyal eat up all the while they are being fucked and they smile and buy some lame hat for $50 to illustrate what fucking morons they truly have become.

I think if one votes for someone simply because they are not someone else is the height of fucking stupidity.

Not to worry the unit that investigates corruption and breach of ethics has been disbanded thus making these self centered assholes free to self enrich at the cost of the nation as a whole.

To pick a single topic or issue to place your vote on is once the fucking stupidest thing I have ever seen in my many years.  You are placing the future of this country in jeopardy because you hate immigrants or gays or women or whatever single issue invades your tiny mind….in other words as long as your chosen leader feeds your biases then the rest of the country can go fuck itself.

If that is you then you are a fucking idiot.

An d that is the way I feel about these douche bags.

Is The “Liberation Day” Unraveling?

Trump’s tariffs…..chaotic, confusing and incomprehensible.

Yes, I write a lot about tariffs.  I am no economic expert but the training I have had leads me to write about the ill-conceived economic plans around tariffs.

The end game of tariffs is that the consumer foots the bill imposed by idiots that use tariffs to further their own wallet expansion.

In the first few weeks of his administration Donny arbitrarily hit almost every country with some sort of tariffs, ranging from 125% to about 19%, and sine those awful days he has steadily walked back some those tariffs and now he has a new plan….

President Donald Trump has declared that the U.S. will be independently setting new tariff rates on several trading partners, bypassing the need for individual agreements.

What Happened: Trump announced during a meeting with business executives in the United Arab Emirates that new tariffs would be introduced within the next two to three weeks. Trump stated that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will be informing the relevant parties by “sending letters” about the new tariffs and the associated costs for conducting business in the United States, reported the Financial Times.

Trump noted that while there were “150 countries” interested in striking deals, it was not practical to meet with all of them. His administration has already reduced many of the tariffs announced on April 2 to 10% for a 90-day period.

(benzinga.com)

So the “Liberation Day” plan is a bust and now they are rethinking their stupidity and coming up with a new plan…..

On Friday, Trump claimed about 150 countries would soon receive letters “essentially telling” them of new US duty rates on their exports. Many learned of similar rates last month, only for the plan to change in a matter of days.

A new chapter, without pomp or ceremony, is now under way. What this one will entail – or how long it lasts – is anyone’s guess.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/17/trump-liberation-day-tariff-walk-back

We wait for the release of this generic letter to see how it will effect our economy and as usual they details are kept from the public for we do not need to know where our income will go….we should just take the word of proven liars….well you may but I refuse to do so.

United Healthcare In The News (Again)

Can you remember awhile back when the CEO of United Healthcare was shot on the streets of NYC?

Well United Healthcare is not through with being the target of investigation….

It seems that the insurance giant may have committed Medicare fraud….(was this on the list of fraud that Elmo had compiled?)

UnitedHealth Group is facing another government investigation, this one reportedly centered on possible criminal Medicare fraud. Since at least last summer, the Justice Department has been investigating the health insurance company for fraud related to its Medicare Advantage business, reports the Wall Street Journal. Medicare Advantage insurers receive extra payment for covering especially sick patients, meaning there’s an incentive to document patients’ diagnoses. Previous reporting by the Journal revealed “questionable diagnoses by UnitedHealth added billions to taxpayers’ costs,” the outlet notes.

Earlier reports described a DOJ civil fraud investigation related to UnitedHealth’s Medicare billing practices. In a statement, UnitedHealth says it wasn’t informed of the “supposed criminal investigation reported” and stands “by the integrity of our Medicare Advantage program,” per Reuters. It previously disputed the Journal‘s reporting as “inaccurate and biased,” saying Medicare Advantage “provides better health outcomes and more affordable healthcare for millions of seniors” than traditional Medicare. But the criminal probe based in New York presents another headache for a company that has seen its stock fall almost 50% in the last month.

The greedy bastards were not deterred by this investigation and continued abusing the people that depended on them for help….

UnitedHealth Group, the healthcare conglomerate facing a criminal investigation over possible Medicare fraud, secretly paid nursing homes thousands of dollars in bonuses to cut hospital transfers for ailing residents, risking patient health while it saved millions, per a Guardian investigation. The outlet identified numerous cases where nursing home residents needed immediate hospital care but failed to receive it after UnitedHealth’s intervention. In one 2019 case out of Washington state, a nursing home resident was showing textbook symptoms of a stroke, indicating immediate hospitalization was needed. But a remote UnitedHealth employee wanted a less-serious condition ruled out first and asked for an update in, not minutes, but four hours.

In a similar case that year, a remote UnitedHealth employee delayed requesting a hospital transfer for a patient with stroke symptoms, forcing facility nurses to bypass the system. It took an hour and the patient suffered permanent brain damage, per the Guardian. Other UnitedHealth nurses say they faced pressure to persuade Medicare Advantage members to adopt “do not resuscitate” orders—an effort to prevent costly hospital stays—even when the patients had expressed a desire to seek all available treatments.

“A lot of times the [facility] nurses want to send people out and we have to go in and try to stop it,” a UnitedHealth nurse tells the outlet. “And if we don’t … they take us out onto the carpet.” “The sense is: ‘Well, they’re medically frail, and no one lives for ever,'” says another nurse. “No one is truly investigating when a patient suffers harm.” Though internal emails reference “budgets” outlining how many hospital admissions a nursing home had “left,” UnitedHealth denies that its employees prevented hospital transfers or inappropriately pushed patients to change their DNR status. It says nursing homes receive bonuses for preventing unnecessary hospitalizations that are harmful to patients. The company’s shares fell almost 7% Wednesday following the report, per Reuters.

These incidents are disgusting and illustrate just how uncaring these greedy bastards truly are….

Not to worry though the consumer will be protected…..oh wait the Consumer Protection part of government has been mostly shuddered by the Trump administration and DOGE.

What to do now?

The Next Pandemic

In the past we have had information to let the people of this country know when diseases were spreading and since we now have a comnplete idiot in charge of HHS and the lack of importance for keeping the public informed we are facing the next pandemic.

I am sure you have read how measles, whooping cough, etc is gaining the upper hand in our society…..and this could be disastrous for the public.

To accomplish its mission of increasing the health security of the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that it “conducts critical science and provides health information” to protect the nation. But since President Trump’s administration assumed power in January, many of the platforms the CDC used to communicate with the public have gone silent, an NPR analysis found.

Many of the CDC’s newsletters have stopped being distributed, workers at the CDC say. Health alerts about disease outbreaks, previously sent to health professionals subscribed to the CDC’s Health Alert Network, haven’t been dispatched since March. The agency’s main social media channels have come under new ownership of the Department of Health and Human Services, emails reviewed by NPR show, and most have gone more than a month without posting their own new content.

“Public health functions best when its experts are allowed to communicate the work that they do in real time, and that’s not happening,” said Kevin Griffis, who served as the director of communications at the CDC until March. “That could put people’s lives at risk.”

Health emergencies have not paused since January. Cases of measles, salmonella, listeria and hepatitis A and C have spread throughout the country. More than 100 million Americans continue to suffer from chronic diseases like diabetes and breast cancer. The decline in the agency’s communication could put people at risk, said four current and former CDC workers, three of whom NPR is allowing to remain anonymous because they are still employed by the CDC and believe they may be punished for speaking out.

How could this happen in a country as advanced as America?

The answer is misinformation and fake analysis…..

Let’s look at why we fall for the bullshit…..

In today’s digital world, people routinely turn to the internet for health or medical information. In addition to actively searching online, they often come across health-related information on social media or receive it through emails or messages from family or friends.

It can be tempting to share such messages with loved ones – often with the best of intentions.

As a global health communication scholar studying the effects of media on health and development, I explore artistic and creative ways to make health information more engaging and accessible, empowering people to make informed decisions.

Although there is a fire hose of health-related content online, not all of it is factual. In fact, much of it is inaccurate or misleading, raising a serious health communication problem: Fake health information – whether shared unknowingly and innocently, or deliberately to mislead or cause harm – can be far more captivating than accurate information.

This makes it difficult for people to know which sources to trust and which content is worthy of sharing.

The allure of fake health information

Fake health information can take many forms. For example, it may be misleading content that distorts facts to frame an issue or individual in a certain context. Or it may be based on false connections, where headlines, visuals or captions don’t align with the content. Despite this variation, such content often shares a few common characteristics that make it seem believable and more shareable than facts.

The Coming Syrian Civil War

One of Donny’s clueless sycophants, Rubio made a bold statement the other day….predicting there would soon be a Syrian civil war.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress on Tuesday that the US assesses the new al-Qaeda-linked Syrian government could collapse within weeks and that the country could descend into “full-scale civil war.”

Rubio made the comments at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, where he explained the administration’s rationale for engaging with Syria’s new de facto leaders, who the US helped put in power, despite their al-Qaeda roots.

“The bad news is that the transitional authority figures, they didn’t pass their background check with the FBI. They’ve got a tough history and one that we understand,” Rubio said.

“If we engage them, it may work out, it may not work out. If we did not engage them, it was guaranteed that it would not work out,” he added. “In fact, it was our assessment that, frankly, the transitional authority, given the challenges they’re facing, are maybe weeks, not many months, away from potential collapse.”

Rubio said that a collapse would lead to “a full-scale civil war of epic proportions. Basically, the country splitting up.”

(antiwar.com)

Two points….first there has been a civil war going on in Syria since about 2011….p0resent day is just a momentary lull in the fighting….second….the country has been split up for years with the Assad government holding the Coast  and the extremists holding most of the east and central parts of the country.

To illustrate my point….just very recently….

While the cooperation between the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) government in Syria and the Kurdish SDF originally made it seem like the violence in northern Syria was on the decline, a new round of fighting between those groups has led to increased tensions and concern that the situation is about to blow up all over again.

Syrian media accused the SDF of trying to infiltrate a pair of army bases in Tal Syriatel, close to the Tishreen Dam. This led to what is being called a “limited” military confrontation between the two sides, though the HTS followed by increasing the number of troops deployed in the area around Tishreen Dam in the name of maintaining security.

This couldn’t have come at a worse time for the two sides, as they are conducting joint operations in neighboring Raqqa Governorate, which is mostly under SDF control. The raids are said to be targeting remnants of the Assad government and “drug dealers,” though locals are bristling at the summary detentions of people on accusations of disloyalty.

(antiwar.com)

Just one incident of the on-going war for dominance in Syria.

Rubio broad statement was clueless and not very accurate….but that is what I expect from someone serving on a cabinet of the least qualified.
