Closing Thought–22May18

I am posting this because there way too many people that think I hate everything that our president does….that is not accurate…..just as I did not agree with everything Obama did…..

I have been a staunch opponent of the Electoral College for many years….I really started bad mouth this archaic practice after the 2000 election.

Recently Trump has made a comment about the EC……a comment that I can agree with……

Pres, Trump argued that he’d rather see the presidential election be determined based on the popular vote than the current Electoral College system, claiming it would be “much easier to win.”

“They also like to always talk about [the] Electoral College. Well, it’s an election based on the Electoral College. I would rather have a popular election, but it’s a totally different campaign,” Trump said during an interview with “Fox & Friends.”

“It’s as though you’re running — if you’re a runner you’re practicing for the 100-yard dash as opposed to the one mile,” he continued. “The Electoral College is different. I would rather have the popular vote, because it’s — to me, it’s much easier to win.”

Given his track record lately he may change his tune next week….but for now I can agree with what he has said…

May your day be good and safe…..chuq

  1. I prefer a popular vote as well. I really don’t get the Electoral College System, no matter how well this had been explained to us by our History teacher. Oh, and election day should be a holiday….. no more excuses for non-voting.

  2. As you mention Obama, and off topic, I see he has been signed up by Netflix (with his wife) to star in documentary films and such. Nice work if you can get it.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Well, you can’t blame some people for getting the wrong idea, chug. It does seem as though you have a whole bag of complaints about most everything every day. Good to see you making yourself a bit clearer.

      1. Yeah pretty much……and I think that politicians are spineless….that is why they are so good a crawfishing…LOL chuq

  4. If you want people to see you as less universally hostile toward Trump…start by capitalizing the “p” in President Trump (Hehhe) Granted, “President Trump” is a term that goes down as smoothly as “a cement enema”….but still.

I have nothing against the concept of an Electoral College. It’s just an alternative method of choosing a leader with its own pros & cons. Pro: Every region is counted and given a fair points value. Con: Winner-Takes-All misshapes the results by overemphasizing finishing first. For example, close races mid-large states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc wound up giving Trump ALL their Electoral College votes. Thus giving him win-levels his actual votes in those states didn’t merit. That’s the REAL trouble with it. It effectively negates every vote not for 1st place in a state.

A national popular vote would mean that elections would go from being focused on the 5-6 closest states to being focused on the 5-6 states with the biggest populations. Smaller states will get ignored by candidates, no matter how close. Pros & cons to that method too.

I suggest Proportionate Representation for state Electoral College votes (60% vote = 60% of a state’s EC votes) Then every vote in every state would count for something and every state would count for something. Huge improvement that would give 3rd Parties hope.

      1. Actually, those days provided more hack-proof, reliable, election results than today. (He-he.) But seriously, that matters more every election.

But it must be said, this total overkill is for just ONE job out of hundreds…a job that often means very little (See: Obama) Damn election now lasts almost as long as the job itself and costs 1,000 times more than elections for every elected position combined should cost. Money (& the candidates a money-driven system produces) is the top problem in my books today. I don’t see any electoral method that makes it cheaper….Well, other than putting everybody’s name on balls and holding a lottery draw. That’d be fun to watch. Honestly, you’d probably get better results with that method than current Congressional Elections produce. (See: Ted Cruze! How does the most hated asshole in America keep winning?)

Don’t get me wrong. I do think the pros of a Direct Vote outweighs the current system. However, It probably wouldn’t change much in practice and will also come with trade-offs. (ie Time zones become much more important and that’s a bitch to solve without a voting holiday…which also should exist.) However, my version of the Electoral College is the way the Electoral College always should have been. If it was that way from the beginning, nobody would be bitching about it because -in a 2 jackass race- the jackass with fewer votes couldn’t win.

Either way, this is all theoretical. (As I’ve said before…You, me & 5 other powerless losers give a fuck.) I probably have a better chance of becoming President than ANY change to the system….Which reminds me, you never said what the mechanism required for change is. How does one change it?
