Is It The Downfall Of Western Civilization?

I have seen many TV shows and heard of movies that use the downfall of Western Civilization as their main premise…..I have talked to numerous people that also see mankind as a cancer and that civilization could be short lived…..

Situations are pointing to an end to Western civilization….at least according to some predictors…….including one Davis Brooks……

In his New York Times column Friday, David Brooks is worried about what might be the ultimate big picture: the collapse of Western civilization. He sees the signs all over, particularly in the rise of “strong men” around the world such as Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Erdogan, Kim Jong Un, and, yes, our own president. “While running for office, Donald Trump violated every norm of statesmanship built up over these many centuries, and it turned out many people didn’t notice or didn’t care,” writes Brooks. Modern governments, he adds, are beginning to resemble “premodern mafia states, run by family-based commercial clans.” He’s also worried about the rise of fringe parties, as can be seen in the presence of Marine Le Pen in France, and the “collapse of liberal values at home,” as seen in the shouting down of speakers at college campuses.

“These days, the whole idea of Western civ is assumed to be reactionary and oppressive,” he concludes. “All I can say is, if you think that was reactionary and oppressive, wait until you get a load of the world that comes after it.” At the BBC, Rachel Nuwer paints a similarly dark picture after interviewing scientists and historians about the long-term prospects for Western societies. The two main themes are growing economic and ecological stresses, but she does end with a hint of hope, summing up the view of one of her interviewees: “Western civilization is not a lost cause, however. Using reason and science to guide decisions, paired with extraordinary leadership and exceptional goodwill, human society can progress to higher and higher levels of well-being and development.” Click for Brooks’ column, and for Nuwer’s.

Disclaimer:  I do not use NYT much as a source ut I read this piece and thought it would make good fodder for conversation…….

A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.

Yes a very heavy subject…..and please let the rest of us in on what you think about the prediction of the downfall of Western civilization.

  1. It is the end game of Islam to create a one world caliphate having eliminated all people, places and things non Islamic. Charlemagne stopped them once. Is this our present day milieu ?

    1. I do not think so….the one world caliphate is only in the minds of some….not a goal to most Muslims. Sorry as a history geek…I believe it was Charles “The Hammer” Martel that stopped the northern expansion….he sounds more like a pro wrestler and not some savior of France…LOL chuq

      1. OK, yes you are correct. But the history books omit all the help Italians gave this Charlie the Hammer guy. There was Tony the Nose, Three Finger Mike, Fat Paul, Lou the Knife, Crusher Paul and Mickey the Pro. And you never hear about that Italian guy from England that helped this hammer fellow: Angelo Saxon.

  2. For what it’s worth, as a personal opinion, I’ve “seen” (or predicted/calculated) the downfall, not only of Western Civilization, but of man’s entire civilization planet-wide for some time now. My time frame to complete collapse and the death of billions until approx. 1.5 billion Earthians are left scraping a living, or as slaves of war lords, encompasses a 500 year period. How much “climate change” will contribute to the speeding up of this disaster remains to be seen, but total collapse is, in my view, inevitable. As you mention, there is a severe political shift taking place, with “Nut-n-Yahoo” type leaders rising and receiving increased public support. There is a palpable loss of moral values and personal integrity (especially among the leadership of “democratic” nations) and a destructive sense of entitlement and irresponsibility engendered directly by a consumer ethic pushed by advertising. Then there are the wars for profit and resources waged against people whose resources are being stolen; whose lands are being appropriated; who’s families and friends are being slaughtered and who are less and less inclined (or able) to ignore the havoc-creating predators. I could go on, but I don’t need to. I can figure out the outcome, and with each passing year I see that my 500 years time-frame is too generous: we’re losing the war we’ve been eager to enter into to try and save what we already had and war would only take away: our freedom and general well-being.

    1. Good observations and 500 year frame is a bit too generous…we can only hope mankind comes to its senses soon….but do not hold your breath….chuq

  3. I sometimes wonder if the loss of western civilisation is such a bad thing. As long as it is just not replaced with the current alternatives. When we look at history, we can see the rise and collapse of many civilisations, from the Greek to the Roman, and the Babylonian to the Ottoman. Yet mankind endures, and may well continue to do so.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. All the ones that you mentioned were great empires and civilizations…the only difference is none had the nukes…that could be the game changer….chuq
