Let’s All Cheer For The TPP

Yet another trade agreement…..all this sad events was began with Hillary’s hubby and his disastrous NAFTA…..it has done more to crap on the American worker than just about anything the GOP could have done…..and Obama not to be outdone by Bubba has his own piece crap trade agreement……The Trans-Pacific Trade agreement (TPP)…….

From the beginning of the process I said it was a horrible piece of trash…..but few listened or opposed and now the rest of the story has been told…..thanx to Tufts University…..

This is what we get when these types of things are done in secret……once again it is about the cash not the jobs……and that is what American “democracy” is always about…..the profit and the profit……period!

As an added bonus….NAFTA did a lot to kill the family farm and make big agri-business the way we produce food…….I read a piece recently about the small farm and would like everyone’s opinion…….

“In Canada, I have the frustrating habit of criticizing government support to the agricultural sector especially entry-barriers in the form of production quotas. Most of those policies are regressive in the sense that they reallocate income from the poorest to the richest. In fact, their entire aim is to artificially increase the income of farmers (especially dairy and poultry farmers) at the expense of the rest of the population. However, when lobbyists for these subsidies come out in public, they do so under different disguises. Their favorite? Farms are dying.” (01/14/16)

If you are still not sure if the TPP is bad or not then look NO further than the GOP…..they have very little opposition to the deal….pretty much shows me who will benefit from the agreement….and guess what?  It ain’t YOU!

Nothing good has come out of any trade agreement since NAFTA……Americans are NO better off for their implementation…..so you tell me…..who are those that enact these failures really work for….I would like your opinions…..

      1. Good… I have trying to see if it was on my end….I could not find it and was beginning to panic….LOL

      2. If you go into your “Settings” you can find a place where it tells you to include your “Likes” on every page. I have mine set on every page and it seems to work out.

      3. OK will do but I believe it is already set for every page….thanx for the advice I will make sure….chuq

  1. Here we go….

I’ve read the link to that head shaking website of Libertarian “thought”. I will address the laughable, sociopathic, content here later. But I’m currently working on a sarcastic response I will post there…..a response they will probably NOT recognize as sarcasm, no matter how easy I make it for them.

From what little I saw, they seem like the kind of folk who masturbate while reading The Fountainhead while sitting in front of a mirror.

    1. At one point, I was wondering if that website you linked to was an economic version of The Onion. That article actually borders on being satire….So, snarky, sarcastic, asshole that I am, I wrote out a (Surprise!) lengthy, steaming turd of sarcastic “agreement” with them. I encourage you to go back there & read it. I thoroughly enjoyed wasting my time writing it.

But here’s a few real points:

      1) Quota restricted farming (Some would call it “Supply Side Farming”) has absolutely proven itself to be the most profitable farming in Canada. Instead of rolling the dice with fickle Canadian weather and even fickler commodity traitors (sic), limiting production via the quota system allows for steady, profitable, farming.

More than any other sector, this allows smaller producers to be profitable & viable. Of course, this is EXACTLY what the Free Market Cults detest about it. They want what’s happening to all the other fields of farming to happen to quota-farming sectors. That is to say, consolidation. Where 100 acres used to be the standard, farms in the 1,000’s of acres are becoming more & more common. Yet despite the increase in size, investment required, reduced workforce and massive increases in production, non-quota farms don’t seem to be any more profitable. That’s because, the system moves the economic benefits of farmers’ on-field successes generated by farmers toward the big players, who are increasingly monopolistic agri-giants. We’re talking the Monsantos, Con-Agra’s, etc who have little/no respect for farmers, livestock, the environment, workers…or anything really. It’s all just widgets to them.

      2) it’s good for quality. Whenever I’m in the US, I can honestly taste the difference in most dairy products. Less production & a steadier income has allowed Canadian farmers to worry less about competition driven, cost-per-unit tricks. I’ve heard many American dairy farmers complain about what they have to do to compete. BGH is a great example of a cost-per-unit device that reduces quality and is very detrimental to the livestock. It was never approved for use, but Canada’s diary farmers don’t need it, or want it. Many American dairy farmers don’t want it, but still “need” it, because Monsanto forced it on them.

      3) The website’s argument is utter (pun intended) BULLSHIT!!!!! Check out that chart that is designed to mislead. On first glance, it looks like half the farm labour drop occurred post-WW2 and that it coincided with a doubling of GDP per capita. But if you look closely at the chart, NEITHER is true.

The TRUTH is that the sharp drop in farm labour was actually pre-WW2, when farm automatization helped cause caused huge swaths of the farm population to be made “unnecessary”. As a result, waves of people fled in desperation to the cities, where poverty & disease became rampant. The “lucky” got to be ruthlessly exploited by industrialists. To the authors of the website, this was presumably a “good” thing because it increased GDP.

And the rise in GDP is also misrepresented in that chart. The majority of GDP increase is actually post WW2. But because the halfway point of both lines is 10% of the total scale (farm labour rates halfway point is actually at 10% and GDP per capita halfway point is only $10,000) the chart minimizes post-WW2 GDP growth. It also over-emphasizes pre-WW2 GDP growth…aka the period where farm labour decreased the most.

In short, the chart is intentionally designed to make an 8-ish% drop in “farm labour as a percent of workforce” appear responsible for the WW2 economic GDP boom when it absolutely wasn’t. It also makes the two lines look like they correspond directly & consistently over time, when they don’t.

      Why do this?

      1) They don’t want to remind people of the incredible social costs that resulted from farm de-population and the importance farm collapse played in The Great Depression.

      2) They want to avoid people drawing negative comparisons to the considerably faster decline in what actually drove the (downplayed) Post-WW2 GDP boom, the industrial sector. Because, if people realize farm de-population had great social costs, yet provided minimal advantage to GDP, they might (correctly) extrapolate that to today’s industrial labour collapse.

      3) It’s the only way to make their argument look legit…and positive. The truth is that their own argument is actually to closer an argument AGAINST what they want.

      1. TPP was a secret….no one was allowed to read the agreement, with the exception of a very few, before it was implemented….why?

You made some great points I wish I was more of an agri-economists…..I dislike the secrecy for something that is suppose to be good for the country….

  2. Don’t have to be an agri-economist to wonder about anyone’s predictions about what will happen between now and 2025. Grin. In a few, very few, years all this may well be mute – because some new or mutated virus (facilitated by Monsanto and profit seekers disrupting the environment to plant more massive plantations) may well kill 30% or more of us. The rapid spread of avian influenza and now Zika – even faster – should be the head slap we need but will not so…
