Good day and thanx for the visit….the updates will be coming less frequent as the war slows down to a crawl…….strategies will need to be revised……
The reports are all about the fight for the Syrian town of Korbane….this will become the standard by which this ‘war’ is judged……and so far the judgement is not too good.
Item 1–Turkey is reluctant to go into Syria to help the town of Korbane….this is because they do not want to…..they want ISIS and Kurds to do as much damage to each other as possible before they step in.
Item 2–The strategy so far has been a dud….with all the ordinance that has been used has done little to slow ISIS……
Large portions of the key Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani fell today, and much of the Iraqi Anbar Province has fallen as well. Months of US air war hasn’t stalled ISIS’ gains even a little.
That’s fueled growing doubts about the US strategy against ISIS, to the extent that there even is a strategy. The losses are palpable, and that’s got the hawks pushing for even further escalation.
Item 3–Turkey’s strategy so far will make more enemies than less…..the Kurds have been fighting Turkey for 30 years and now with the problem in Korbane things can lonely get worse……
If Kobani falls to the fighters of Isis there will be a surge of violence across Turkey. The 15 million Turkish Kurds will blame the Turkish government for enabling Isis to capture the Kurdish enclave by denying its defenders reinforcements, weapons and ammunition.
The faltering peace process between the Turkish Kurd militants and Ankara may finally collapse. A Kurdish politician was quoted as saying that “you can’t expect to break the backs of the Kurds in Syria and win their hearts in Turkey”.
Item 4–The big player in the Middle East, Iran has said out right………
Iran’s Foreign Ministry says Tehran is ready to take practical measures in dealing with the ongoing chaotic situation in the northern Syrian city of Kobani if it receives an official request from Damascus.
“Kobani is a part of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and if this government makes a request and asks for any assistance, we are ready to help,” Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
A double edge sword….Iran is capable of helping against ISIS but they also are Syria’s biggest ally….what to do….what to do?
Item 5–Let’s say the city of Korbane falls to ISIS…..how will that influence the startegy we have now?
The advance of Islamic State rebels on the Syrian border town of Kobani is a tragedy but will not deter the United States and its allies from their long-term strategy in the region, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday.
“Kobani is a tragedy because it represents the evil of ISIS but it is not the definition either of the strategy or the full measure of what is happening with response to ISIS,” Kerry told reporters in Boston, using an acronym for Islamic State rebels.
NO? Then what will it take to change the thinking? Most of Northern Syria and most of Anbar in Iraq is about to become a client state of ISIS…..what has to happen to make a change?
That concludes today’s briefing. Future briefings will be issued as needed. The war is bogging down for now and the news coming out is pretty redundant.
Thanx for your time and attention.
