“Pass This Bill”

“Pass the bill….Pass the bill…..Pass the bill”

Reminds me of “Yes We Can….Yes We Can”………

Remember the feel good slogan of 2008?  Let me help…..”Yes We Can”  That was what it was a feel good slogan….how about another?  Change We Can Believe In!  Remember that one?

Guess what?  We have a new one!  “Pass The Bill”.  That is right after about 3 years of trying the Dems have a new slogan….a new bumper sticker……they could not find a hook for health care or financial regulation….but when needed they arose to the occasion….”Pass The Bill”…..

Obama is making the rounds….connecting with the people….and of course, getting in a little campaigning…..he has his new hook…he has the mindless and optimistic throngs of Dems chanting at each stop…”Pass The Bill”…..and though it is only about a week old it is already as irritating as some of the other tag lines…like 24/7…..or boots on the ground….or the most irritating off slogans…”kick The Can Down The Road”……

But with all that said, how about the line?

“Pass The Bill” has NO shot of passing, perhaps parts of it, but NOT the whole thing.  Why?  You may ask.

All money bills must originate in the House of Representatives….(pause here for thought)…..With Boehner the Speaker and Cantor the majority leader does passing sound like a possibility?  And then, even if by some miracle the bill makes it out of the House and on to the Senate where it would need just 41 senators to block it…….a Senate that has 47 Repubs….a Senate leader that has stated that the sole purpose of the Senate is to see that Obama is NOT re-elected…….now does that sound like it has a chance in Hell?

It is a great slogan….a great bumper sticker…..but a thoroughly waste of energy to chant it….it is NOT a jobs bill….it is, however, a good piece of campaign strategy…..will create few jobs and give away even more revenue that is needed….so by all means….chant your butts off…..but do NOT expect any chance of a massive jobs creation bill…..

Eventually, Americans will learn that chants, slogans and bumper stickers do NOTHING for the country!

But all means…..chant your butts off!

  1. It actually depends a lot on how much of a spine the President has. If he produces a LBJ-style backbone, twists arms, and gets people behind him, the Rushpubliscums will pass the bill with a few fig leaves thrown in so they can save face.

I am not terribly confident of the President’s willingness to crack down, however.

    1. Morning Jolly…..without revenue there will be no real progress……and these jobs will not do much…this is just trying to gain a political advantage.

  2. He’s got them fooled. They thought he would be different, a president of the people. Turns out he’s just another snake oil salesman selling greed and capitalism. Makes me sick.

    1. Well said Tim and back in 2008I told people on Daily Kos that they were dreaming if they thought change was gonna happen….God! I love being right! LOL

  3. Lobotero,

I just don’t know what people expect out of Obama given the Tea Party numbers in Congress. I’ll grant that Obama could have done more in the first two years, but recall he was busy trying to push through Obamacare, the Right threatening censure.

I can understand the anger, but I don’t know how much of it Obama deserves.

    1. I’ll grant that Obama could have done more in the first two years, but recall he was busy trying to push through Obamacare, the Right threatening censure. He couldn’t negotiate out of a wet paper bag on the healthcare reform bill, taking almost a year, as he started with taking Universal healthcare off the table from the get-go Terrance. He put no pressure on the blue dogs to get onboard, instead he tried to buy them off, which ultimately was exposed and cost him their vote.

LBJ didn’t have a walk in the park either when he pushed through the civil rights bills but he got it done.

With all the voices screaming for Universal healthcare on his side, he remained silent, and never took the fight to the people, like he is doing now w/his doomed jobs bill..of course it’s election season now, which is probably why he is taking his fight to the people.

He started his administration by upholding all the lawsuits against the Bush administration on warrantless wiretapping of americans. That didn’t make any of us on the far left ‘fans’ of his right out of the gate.

He is a fan of NAFTA-style deals which had already proven to be total bullshit not only for our country but the host countries. See the Korea deal if you aren’t sure what I am talking about.

His continued prosecution of whistleblowers is disgusting and left a horrid taste in my mouth, I dunno about yours.

I could go on and on…but why bother? The man has done more for the GOP than he has for the Democrat’s and their beliefs.

      1. Dusty I will agree…..he could have done more if he would have had some help from his “friends” in Congress……..but instead he had to deal with cowards!

      2. I agree in partL Obama isn’t the best negotiator in D.C. by a mile.

But if you recall, the Republicans were entirely against the bill, threatening censure, screaming socialism, and so on. People don’t give Obama enough credit for this healthcare bill, because while it’s not perfect, Obama managed to do something both Roosevelts pushed for yet failed to do, what LBJ failed to do completely, and what Clinton failed to do, and that is massively overhaul the U.S. healthcare system. I suggest we give credit where credit is due.

Does it go far enough? Not in my view, no. But it’s a start.

      3. Terrance, you are right…at least he is trying that is more than the GOP has done in the last 9 months….we will see how the process gets screwed…..

    2. So true…..but neither side seem to worry about the people….health care was so watered down trying to get support that it is non-functional……finreg is so watered down it allows the same crap that got us where we are today……He has worked hard but his “friends” in the Congress have done little to help….

  4. he could have done more if he would have had some help from his “friends” in Congress……..but instead he had to deal with cowards! LBJ had no friends when it came to passing the civil rights bill..but he got it done. I feel comparing healthcare reform to passing the civil rights bill is valid as both seemed impossible on their face. LBJ knew how to push and pull, negotiate, threaten and cajole I guess…Obama knows none of those things evidently as he sucks as a negotiator.

      1. With an election coming up…we will see just how moderate those Repubs really are…….my guess is they are cowards and will fall to the Tea Party….

  5. But if you recall, the Republicans were entirely against the bill, threatening censure, screaming socialism, and so on. People don’t give Obama enough credit for this healthcare bill, because while it’s not perfect, Obama managed to do something both Roosevelts pushed for yet failed to do The effn GOP threatened…so what? It’s called negotiating. I did it for a living for 15 years. You don’t start by giving up your biggest carrot and that is what Obama did by blowing off Universal healthcare from the get-go.

The fucking HCR bill was written to assuage the health insurance industry, plain and simple. We don’t really get shit out of the bill, has anyone actually read it? I have. Plus…add to the fact that the Obama administration has been handing out waivers to big corporations like it’s fucking contest…the waivers throw the employees under the fucking bus for christs sake!

Sorry I am so worked up about this..but I am tired of Obama apologists, I really am. Not calling anyone here one of those, but if you continue to make excuses for the shitty HCR bill and other crap he has done/pulled…it makes you either an apologist or an uninformed citizen who still wants to believe in his hopey, changey bullshit that ain’t never gonna happen.

    1. Dusty, the sad part is that we may never know if it was good or not….for most of it will not go into effect until 2014….and who knows what will happen by then?

    2. Dusty,

You don’t start by giving up your biggest carrot and that is what Obama did by blowing off Universal healthcare from the get-go.

I’ll agree with that, but then I wonder if Republicans would have come to the table for something like that.

You don’t have to apologize about getting worked up. I understand the frustration. But my point is that I don’t think the Republicans – or many Democrats either – would have negotiated if Obama pushed for a universal system of healthcare. There is simply too many lobbiests giving out too much campaign cash. So I just wonder if this bill is the best we can do. I certainly hope not, but I don’t have a lot of faith in our political process.
