Will History Repeat?

2010/2012 Election Series

I am sure that everyone has heard the old saying that history repeats itself….do you believe it?  Or do you think it is crap?

This time I am talking about the Tea Party movement…..that movement built on the insecurity of the American people, especially the conservatives…this spontaneous movement, as it has been billed, is nothing new.  I know, “what the Hell do you mean, Professor”?

I mean that this “spontaneous” movement of the people is NOTHING new.  Look at the death of Kennedy and his replacement Johnson…..his programs scared the living Hell out of conservatives and they set about change the climate in the South….then came the landslide of Nixon and Dems started wringing their hands and had to redefine themselves because McGovern was too far left and that sent shutters through the party.  And what took his place, Jimmy Carter and that adjustment gave us a one term president.  And now with the election of Obama the conservatives are struggling to find their next handhold on the people.

With a promise of change, Obama swept through the states on his way to the White House….his only draw back was the strangle hold that the Conservs have on the South.  But the people’s movement had to try and capitalize on the wish for change and the use of the South and their unnatural fears was the perfect place to start.

The biggest problem today is that the opposition to Obama is that it is being fueled by lies and misinformation….at least in the past, most of the political changes were from a legit oint of opposition…this time around it is just pure HATRED that is driving the movement, at least from those with the biggest mouths.

The only thing left to say is a warning to the American voter…..be careful what you wish for it may come true….

  1. “be careful what you wish for” Yes, of course, but isn’t that what drives party politics all the time? Either people are sick of the right, or the left and they will vote the opposite way in order to get the lunatics and the inept out. However, I suspect that what MOST people ACTUALLY want is a basically fiscally competent government (so some degree of conservatism is indicated to my mind) but with a conscience and a sense of social decency about them – so basically moderate, whatever.

Sadly, that is ever more difficult to achieve in these days of TV advertising 24-7 and sound bite driven politics that the extremists on both sides are so adept at manipulating (and that’s usually about ALL they are any good at).

I’m afraid that whoever said that the people get the government they deserve had it about right. But, miracle of miracles, quite unintentionally and by the luckiest of pure flukes, I do think that the UK at the moment has probably achieved the almost impossible and acquired one of the best governments we as a nation have had in the last more than 60 years.

I just hope it lasts – and lasts – and lasts – and… well, you get the point I’m sure.

Of course, I may be saying something entirely different in a year or so’s time, but for now I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt – since they would surely need to struggle very hard indeed to be as bad as the shower of utter shit we’ve just got rid of…

You, in the US, with your system, are unfortunately unlikely to achieve this – well, you basically can’t actually, even by accident, because you only allow for a two horse race! Life’s a bitch, eh?

    😈

    1. Geez…that is great that you have that much optimism…I am jealous….I have not had that since the 1960’s. And I hope it lasts for you also.

      Life is a BIG bitch!

    2. It is quite possible that it could last…..but the political games must be held to a minimum…is that possible? The the US it is not…..

      1. I haven’t been this optimistic (with reservations) for avery long time either, but I have doubts about its longevity – Labour will snipe and spin and try to destablilise and disenchant people, when in fact we should ALL be pulling together!

The Labourite mob had their chance for 13 years and f*cked up so badly you wouldn’t believe, but do they accept that obvious fact? No! Do they hell! It was all someone else’s fault – as usual! Now they should back off and support an alternative way – like it or not – in the best interests of the country as a whole, but I doubt if they will!

      2. I dare say I shall be disappointed as usual, but at the moment Cameron and Clegg appear to be taking a bulldozer to labour’s vast bureaucracy and simply smashing it as they roll back the interference and meddling of the state and central government in particular.

Fingers crossed. Heck! Everything crossed! 😆

      3. Yep, they seem to be on a roll for now…..it will be interesting to see if it can continue….maybe if they are successful then the GOP would have something to use as a model, because they got sh*t now…….
