Over the years I have pointed out numerous times that some person in the South has made a complete ass of themselves by saying something that is totally inappropriate….and the beat goes on…this time it was the Lt. Governor of South Carolina….apparently the state is full of morons….we have the governor who was hiking the Appalachian Trail (wink, wink) to the idiot that yelled ‘you lie’ at the president and now yet another yo-yo that needs to have his tongue ripped out…..
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has compared giving people government assistance to “feeding stray animals.”Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, made his remarks during a town hall meeting in Fountain Inn that included state lawmakers and about 115 residents.
“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better,” Bauer said.
I think that there will be those who will agree with this statement….you know those people who think that poverty is caused by laziness and not the government or possible that dislike the poor because they are poor……
It is interesting comment considering that there is high percentage of the people of South Carolina that live below the poverty level…..and many of those are African American…so were his comments slightly veiled racism or what? He sounds like a typical Southern Republican to me…..I live there and many of them feel this way about the poor….
NOT THAT I AGREE with the man’s sentiment, because I really, really DON’T! But on a purely dispationate level, isn’t he right about at least a significant potion of the human population in western societies?
People ARE one species of animal on this planet (nothing more in my opinion). Whilst there are people who are poor because of events in their lives, because of national and even international events and other reasons beyond their control, there is also an extremely significant minority who are just too lazy to work even when work is available, are basically dishonest and are often downright goddamn awful objectionable assholes who hardly deserve to live, let alone have our sympathy – I almost said animals at that point, but animals other than humans generally behave far better than that.
I do believe those people should NOT be helped by the majority! The idea that they can be “redeemed” with kindness is simply utter BS and they cost the rest of us a fortune both financially and in terms of hatred and anguish.
How you would separate the good but unlucky from the shitheads, I have no idea, but the man is (accidentally I’m sure) right in as much as such people do breed without thought or consideration for personal responsibility and they are almost guaranteed to produce offspring who turn out to be even worse than they are.
Please believe me, I’m not defending this creep, but simply pointing out that, in very simplistic form, if welfare is provided to criminals, they frequently use it to buy guns not food and I don’t see why we should do anything for them at all. That said, there are innocents who would suffer as a result of not doing so.
There is just one thing I’d point out to this jerk… if he’s not a pro-lifer, then a lot of his colleagues certainly are – so, if it’s right to protect life the moment the cells start to divide, or even to allow it to be created unintentionally through a lack of contraception, how does he square that with allowing kids to starve if their parents are poor?
A few years ago I did some research of this very issue….and here in the states less than 1% of recipients are doing it for profit….on the other point….the Repubs only care about babies until they are born then they let the Dems go to work and bitch about the cost…..personally, I would rather see my tax dollars spent on education and feeding the hungry than on bombs……
Well, you may be right in the States – it ain’t so in the UK where only the truly needy and deserving go without – anyone else can ride the gravy train.
I will give LBJ his props…his idea was a good one with the War on Poverty…but each pres afterwards has crapped on the orinignal plan and now it has little effect on changing poverty…just keeping the poor where they are….POOR!
I applaud the idea, but in reality it rarely does anything to help the poor. It’s those with the loudest mouth that that get whatever help there is and those are usually the least worthy and most devious – it’s just human nature, which is always the goddamn problem that gets in the way.
Still, like I said, I applaud the idea, it’s just a shame that the ones who need it most get the least, if anything.
Nothing new in that I guess…
I have been disappointed in my government from the day that I first got interested in politics some 150 years ago….well it seems that long…….I have to agree with everything you have just said….truly sad…there is no other way to say it….
