Is Medicare Truly Doomed?

If one listens closely to all the conservative talkers and a couple of the cowardly Dems we will no doubt believe that Medicare is going bankrupt by 2019….there is even a couple of the doomsayers that say it will be in 2013….this is the argument that they are all using to cut the program or to try and drive that last nail into the coffin…..

This program which has benefited numerous individuals since its inception will become the play toy of politicians in the next year….even Dems are saying that program reform will help save it, and there are the Repubs that want to eliminate it completely in favor of a damn silly idea…HSAs (health saving accounts)….that is a brilliant plan…..

But what and when is Medicare going to go bankrupt?

News accounts sometimes treat Medicare’s bankruptcy as a predetermined fact. Nothing could be further from the truth; the notion of bankruptcy as destiny distracts from Medicare’s capacity to alter its own future. The trustees’ reports always stress that the projected date of insolvency assumes no corrective federal action or policy changes. But history shows that Medicare always has taken action to solidify its finances. In the 1980s, Medicare reformed its payment system for hospital and physicians, slowing down growth in program spending and pushing back the estimated date of trust fund exhaustion. More recently, the 1997 Balanced Budget Act included a series of Medicare reforms that dramatically controlled spending.

There is the stumbling point of all the predictions about the impending bankruptcy of Medicare……it is crap!…..it is the assumption that the government will do NOTHING or that there will be NO new payments into the system by taxpayers….

But regarless of the facts above….no matter who is in the White House…there will be reforms ot Medicare…..an attempt to save it from itself….but what will these reforms look like?

— Raise the payroll tax to bring in more revenue and because that political discussion has been postponed for so long it now becomes problematic. The trustees said Part A “could be brought into actuarial balance over the next 75 years by an immediate 108 percent increase in program income or an immediate 48 percent reduction in program outlays (or some combination of the two).”

— Reduce benefits for Medicare beneficiaries. The problem is that no one who wants a political future wants to go there.

— Cut payments to providers. This option is the one most favored by lawmakers. In Part A it would be the nation’s hospitals. After all, they can and do give the money back in the following year or so.

Those are the “reforms” that I see as the options the Congress will face as an attempt to “save” Medicare.  Next year will be a good year for analysts like me…..this year was a good one with the economic crisis and the health reform debate……will generate a plethora of posts and arguments…..

The prediction of Medicare’s death is seriously exaggerated…..the only reason it comes up at all is because the prediction can be used to gain political clout and show how “inefficient” a government run program can be…..it is all a game…it is all a lie…..

Generational Theft?

Cute title and the new buzzword from the Right……it is being used by McCain, Boehner, Cantor and a wealth of right wing talkers on the airwaves…..

The hundreds of billions of dollars Washington is borrowing to finance this pork-barrel monstrosity will come from our children and grandchildren. This is not “stimulus” – it’s generational theft.

McCain said that the Senate version of the package (which, even after some pruning by Republicans and Democrats, currently stands at $827 billion) would lead to a $1.2 trillion budget deficit, which he said marks only the beginning of a greater downward spiral. “We are going to amass the largest debt in the history of this country and we are going to ask our kids and grandkids to pay for it,” he said.

I find it amazing that they, the right, would be using it since they have, for the last 8 years, saddled our children with trillions in debt for their damn stupid military exercises….but that somehow is different….you will hear….but that is bulls*it!

Anything that stretches the deficit can be called generational theft…..the Dems do NOT have a market cornered on the situation…..all this hyperbole is just that……a game…a sick political game…a game that NO one can win….

The sickening part is the false concern for future generations……if these sanctimonious blow hards really cared about future generations then they would have NO problem saving the environment, strengthen education, fixing health care……but NO!……they had rather spend their time and waste our money playing games……while those insignificant little people (US) try to go about their lives and make a life for their families……

Financial Cowards!

The Dems. well at least most of them, are working hard to try and find a way to control the financial markets so these thieving a/holes cannot bring down another booming economy by their insatiable need for profits and not just profits but rather obscene profits…..

You would imagine that the Repubs would do all they could to protect the Wall Street thieves from any such controls…..and they are….but their is another……

New Democrats!  That alliance of centrists democrats……

Bloomberg is reporting on the new financial regulations battle:

“New Dems have promoted strong regulatory reform that institutes trade and price reporting, capital requirements, and margin requirements, all of which puts mandates on these institutions that they don’t like,” Lipman said. “New Dems have been focused on increasing transparency, reducing systemic risk, and preserving the ability for end-users to hedge their risk.”

The battle over derivatives legislation is a test for the Obama administration’s efforts to tighten financial regulation to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis that shook the global economy — a crisis exacerbated by derivatives trading.

Derivatives dealers became concerned that Obama’s plan didn’t adequately define “alternative swap execution facility” and that, in the end, regulators would write rules making them similar to exchanges, people familiar with the lobbying effort said. Over the last two months, the banks pressed to have Frank’s draft allow standardized trades to be executed privately via telephone, as they’ve been traded for decades, as long as they are reported to regulators, the people said.

The coalition sent Congress a letter on Oct. 2 saying that some reform proposals “place an extraordinary burden on end- users of derivatives.” Members also met this week with lawmakers and staff on Capitol Hill.

In the end-users coalition, broker-dealers found a powerful ally. Although the two groups say they didn’t coordinate their lobbying, their interests overlapped and many of the concessions won in the bill for end-users ended up benefiting some of the biggest Wall Street banks whose credit-default swaps exacerbated the financial crisis.

The New Democrats came to the forefront after the crushing defeat of Dems by Reagan and his machine….they decide that they would become a center for the party to rally around….it was these cowards that gave us the NAFTA debacle that help send all those jobs running to the overseas markets ….and now they want to protect the scoundrels that caused the meltdown of the US and world economies…..the truly sad part is that the people while angry at the Wall Street antics will turn a blind eye to the games being played by the big wheels……

You can almost bet that the highwaymen will find a way to help themselves to the benefits coming from Washington and in return will have their guarantee that if they screw up again, the American taxpayer will be glad to help them out of their plight……if this is the way of the future then the Dems are NO better than the Repubs….FINANCIAL COWARDS!

A side note:  Since the taxpayer made Goldman-Sachs more stable should not they get the benefits of the profits that were made on their money?  Why not demand that this company and any company that took TARP money use their profits not for bonuses but rather mail a check to each tax payer in the system…….you want demand to be created…that would do it……..Just a thought……

Real Costs Of Unemployment

We have all heard the stories, the horror, the spin and the outright lies about unemployment….we have heard what it is doing to the economy, to Wall Street and the resty….but what is the “true” costs of unemplyment?

A new New York Times/CBS News poll offers a glimpse of the devastating human impact of the US unemployment crisis.

The poll and interviews illustrate some of the measures taken by unemployed workers to survive. About one quarter of those surveyed have relied on food stamps and one fifth have received help from food charities. Half said that their spouse has taken on extra hours or another job to supplement family income, and 53 percent have borrowed money from family members in order to make ends meet.

Sixty percent have liquidated money from savings and retirement accounts. Among these is Lee Daves, 54, who worked as a machinist making $13 an hour in Springfield, Missouri, until he was laid off in January. His unemployment benefits, which are soon to expire, are not enough to pay for his modest lifestyle. To pay bills, he was forced to sell off his 401(k) retirement account.

One of the survey’s more striking revelations is that nearly half of the unemployed workers in its sample have received no unemployment benefits through the nation’s restrictive jobless insurance system. Among those who have, 61 percent say that this has not been enough money to pay for mortgages, health insurance, food and other expenditures.

Fifty-four percent of those polled by the Times/CBS say they have cut back on medical treatment or visits to the doctor, and forty-seven percent are without health care coverage.

Unemployment is causing anxiety, stress, and other mental disorders, the poll finds. Nearly 70 percent of respondents reported being “stressed more than usual,” while 55 percent reported suffering from insomnia. A quarter have sought help from mental health professionals. Forty percent say that as a result of unemployment they have noticed changes in the behavior of their children.

Now we see what the real costs of unemployment is……it goes far beyond the spin that the financial media would have you believe….it is disastrous to families and sanity….

Is It “Activist” Judges?

I can hear the screams from my house……

I am always looking for constitutional stuff……stuff that flies in the face of all those people whop stand on the US Constitution as a defense of their opposition to an issue……also those people that have NOT read the document before they spout crap or try to manipulate an occurrence…..

This one ought to get all the right wing nuts salivating:

This report came from the NY Times:

The federal government must continue to provide grant money to the national community organizing group Acorn, a federal court ruled Friday, saying that the House violated the Constitution when it passed a resolution barring the group from receiving federal dollars.

A judge at the United States District Court in Brooklyn issued a preliminary injunction that nullifies the resolution and requires the government to honor existing contracts with the group and review its applications for new grants unless the Obama administration appeals the decision.

The court ruled that the resolution amounted to a “bill of attainder,” a legislative determination of guilt without trial, because it specifically punishes one group.

Oh darn!  I can just hear all those who have been demonizing ACORN for decades revving up their engines to attack the ruling.  There shoulkd be the usual suspects that attack any ruling like this…the call to end “Activist” judges….you know those judges that are doing what they are suppose to do according to the Constitution….acting as the umpire in the legislative game…..but since it is not a ruling the Right will like…they will be “Activist” judges that are setting policy…..

This would be the SAME Right that would have NOTHING to say if the ruling went in their favor….after many many years of trying to kill ACORN….for no other reason than it has been successful at registering Dem voters….the Right has suffered a set back….it will be interesting what new technique they will find to attack the organization……

This fight IS NOT over…not by a long shot…..

And The Constitution Says–Part 2

As anyone who reads my posts know that I am always on the lookout for stuff about the US Constitution….because too many people use it without reading it….

Since so many conservatives like to stand on the Constitution in opposition to anything Democratic….I then like to find the stuff that dreams are made of to rebut some of their BS…….basically, what I enjoy doing is to show that the people that use the Constitution as a defense against anything political is hypocrisy…..why?….it is obvious that they have not read nor understood the very document that they have pledged to protect……

Once again it is a Republican that has done something that is unconstitutional…and this time it is a minor voice of the GOP…..Charles Boustany (R-LA)….you might recall this gentleman…he was the voice of the minority after the Obama address to the joint session of Congress….you remember…the speech where another Repub yelled out, “you lie!”…..

Sorry I digress…..recently there came a report of a situation that involved Boustany

As written in the Daily Kos:

Congressman Boustany once attempted to buy an English Title.  There was one small problem … it was a fraud (pdf alert).
http://www.dailykingfish.com/…Apparently, two con artists hoodwinked dumb wealthy Americans like Congressman Boustany into believeing they could buy an English title, which would give them all sorts of goodies like being called Lord Boustany and a seat to ride in the Queen Mum’s 100th Birthday celebration back in the mid-1990’s.

Most millionaires like Congressman Lord Boustany would let the money go. But not Congressman Lord Boustany. Noooo.

He filed a lawsuit that never went anywhere in Lafayette Parish, and it is available to the public.  Here is a link to all three pages of the complaint, but the most relevant one is page 2, which shows how much he paid for the Title – $18,500 – and lists both his name and that of his wife in the pleading, and why they are filing suit.
http://www.dailykingfish.com/…

There is one small problem with the thing if he had been successful in obtaining his title….that problem is in Article 1 Section 9, which reads:

No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.

No Preference shall be given by any Regulation of Commerce or Revenue to the Ports of one State over those of another: nor shall Vessels bound to, or from, one State, be obliged to enter, clear, or pay Duties in another.

No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State.

The key to it is the last paragraph of the Article……….”No Title of Nobility……or title of any kind whatever…..”

Now if Boustany had been successful he would have violated the Constitution….the very document that he has sworn to uphold……what a moron!

I post this to show that our “leaders” are idiots and at best have not read the document that they use frequently to oppose any issue…or maybe he thought that it would put him on the fast track to the Senate….after all it is our version of the House of Lords……

Cash For Caulkers

Another brilliant idea…..it accomplishes very little…..A rather ingenuous label……trying to tie it in to the semi-successful program of Cash for Clunkers….cute……But what is this program all about?

The program contains two parts: money for homeowners for efficiency projects, and money for companies in the renewable energy and efficiency space.

The plan will likely create a new program where private contractors conduct home energy audits, buy the necessary gear and install it, according to a staffer on the Senate Energy Committee and Nadel at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

Big-ticket items like air conditioners, heating systems, washing machines, refrigerators, windows and insulation would likely be covered, Nadel said.

Consumers might be eligible for a 50% rebate on both the price of the equipment and the installation, up to $12,000, said Nadel. So far, there is no income restriction on who is eligible. That would mean a household could spend as much as $24,000 on upgrades and get half back.

A good idea?  IMO….HELL NO!  Why?  This will only help a small percentage of Americans…..think about it…..let us say you are a home owner who is finding it difficult to keep up with the mortgage payments….where will you find the money to spend on this?  Or better yet, 1 in 6 Americans is unemployed…that alone would not make it feasible to spend much needed money on home improvements….and then there is the tight credit for individuals….need I say more along that line?

Just where is the jobs creation?  At best, it is a band-aid for a gunshot wound……

So far the Obama Admin is doing NOTHING substantial to create jobs or to help Main Street……is this the change we voted for?  Not my idea of change but then I am sarcastic SOB……

Open Letter To Congress #2

As anyone who visits Info Ink will testify that I am an opinionated SOB and have NO problem tell it like it is, or at least as it looks to me….this will be the second open letter that I will have sent to Congress…it is just my small attempt to let the guys and gals in Washington know how frustrated most Americans are at this point in time…..I am an equal opportunity trasher…it will go to Dems as well as Repubs….for both are equally as guilty as the other for the situation we Americans are facing…..

To The “Honorable” Members Of Congress:

We, the people, have been subjected to a political theater of the absurd and it is beyond time for this turkey to give a final curtain call.  Dear Members you are NOT acting in the best interest of the country and its people.  You are not acting as the good faith representatives that you were elected to be…..you were elected to serve the country, I repeat, serve the country not to play political games.

With each new issue the rhetoric and the antics and theatrics become more and more absurd….it is beyond time for you people to start behaving like the statesmen that you pretend to be.

End the emotional detachment from the plight of the American people; you are making the institution of government a un-amusing joke……Apparently the people and the Constitution mean NOTHING to you clowns except when they can serve a purpose in your silly little game.  The whole process that you people engage in has become disgusting and your attitude even more disgusting.  The very idea that you people would rather play  party politics than trying to find real answers to America’s problems is in itself a disgust idea.

The Congress was elected by the people in good faith and in return all we get is pathetic political games…..almost to the person, you told the voters that you would go to Washington and make it a place where the people would make a difference….so far that is a total lie and the games are the games of cowards not statesmen.

Americans are losing homes…….going hungry……losing jobs……dying for lack of health care…..losing retirement funds and the best you people can do is argue over the words in a bill or make up some vague concept that has NO foot in reality…..that is what cowards do when they have NO idea on what to do.  Lobbyists money is WELL sspent!

Have you experienced what the people have to experience everyday?  Have you lost your home?  Do you go to bed hungry?  Do your kids?  Do you have to choose between food or rent?  NO!  Then how can you possibly know what Americans are going through?

I am not choosing one party over the other……I am calling ALL OF YOU….COWARDS!  This silly theatrics has been going on for decades…..a theater of the absurd and all of you deserve the best actor award for your part in the play……maybe your approval rating among the people would be better than 23% if you actually did something other than play this game…..the truly sad part of this whole play is that the American people will be duped time and time again and return you people to Washington on the lies you feed them every re-election campaign……

If the participants in our government cannot act in the best interests of the people….maybe we as voters should rethink renewing your contract with us….for as it stands now you people are nothing but a waste of time and money…..and you have had enough time to waste both those precious resources……I can only pray that I meet you in the unemployment line….wait!….that cannot be……why?….most of your are already millionaires thanks to the American people…..so yet another hope gets drowned in the toilet of government…..thank you for absolutely NOTHING!

You Cannot Fix Stupid!

Daily Agitator

One of my fav quotes from comedian Ron White…..I do not normally post on things that I feel are stupid or not of necessary importance….but I just have to post on this…..after years of watching the same thing happen time after time….I am beginning to think that the American “sportsman” is a MORON!

Every year some person or group of idiotic dipsticks just has to climb Mt. Hood in the dead of winter and year after year they need to be rescued……and guess what?  This year is NO different!

From the NY Times:

Fears of an avalanche on Mount Hood forced rescuers to use a helicopter and airplanes in their search for two missing climbers on Sunday, a day after crews found the body of their climbing companion on a glacier on the mountain, Oregon’s highest.

The three climbers began their ascent on the west side of the mountain around 1 a.m. Friday and were due back in the afternoon. Crews found the body of Luke T. Gullberg, 26, of Des Moines, Wash., on Saturday, on the glacier at the 9,000-foot level.

Officials had not given up hope on Sunday that the climbers, who they said were experienced, could be found alive. Relatives of the climbers gathered at Timberline Lodge, a ski lodge on the flank of Mount Hood and a staging area for the rescuers, to await more news. They were being comforted by Dennis Simons, a nondenominational volunteer chaplain.

He said the expertise of the two missing climbers was giving their relatives hope. He also said that Ms. Nolan had made the summit of other Cascade Range peaks, and that the three had climbed together before. “They know how to survive in the snow,” Mr. Simons said.

Mount Hood has been the site of dozens of climbing accidents. The worst on record occurred in May 1986, when nine people — seven students from Oregon Episcopal School and two adults — died after they dug a snow cave during a sudden storm.

First of all, do any of these dorks know what a weather report is?  Second, do any of these “experts” know anything about conditions on mountains in winter?  Third, F*CK ’em if they are this stupid then there is NO saving them!

Just how experienced are the morons that climb the mountain knowing the death toll is high?  It is time to either make the mountain off-limits in winter or make the family responsible for the cost of the rescue mission…..it is that simple!  Apparently these “responsible” individuals care nothing of their own safety and really do not give a crap about anyone else…..Possible post a sign that says, “climb at your own risk”

It is time to STOP pretending that these a/holes are anything but self-centered pricks!  If they do not know how dangerous the mountain is then they should stay home and service the wife or husband as the case may be…if they do not care if they die….why should I?

A Working Government For Afghanistan?

My readers know that I have serious reservations about the US situation in Afghanistan.

By now most Americans have heard and formed an opinion on the up-coming surge of American troops for Afghanistan.  My take on it is that we will send our troops to the country to help sure up the government, both national and local, to the point that they can step forward and take over the defense against outside influences.

Griff White of the WaPo has an interesting article in the issue of 08 Dec:  he has written that there are two separate government s for some of the provinces in Afghanistan……

The first was appointed by President Hamid Karzai and is backed by thousands of U.S. troops. He governs this mountainous eastern Afghan province by day, cutting the ribbons on new development projects and, according to fellow officials with knowledge of his dealings, taking a generous personal cut of the province’s foreign assistance budget.

The second governor was chosen by Taliban leader Mohammad Omar and, hunted by American soldiers, sneaks in only at night. He issues edicts on “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” stationery, plots attacks against government forces and fires any lower-ranking Taliban official tainted by even the whiff of corruption.

Shadow government officials collect taxes, forcing farmers at gunpoint to turn over 10 percent of their crops, according to accounts of officials and residents. Taliban district chiefs conscript young men into the radical Islamist movement’s army of insurgents, threatening death for those unwilling to serve. And the Taliban’s judges issue rulings marked by a ruthless efficiency: With no jails in which to hold prisoners, execution by hanging or automatic rifle is the swiftly delivered punishment for convicted murderers and rapists, or for anyone found guilty of working with the government.

Could we put enough troops in Afghanistan to fight such a development?  I say probably not…..if you look at Afghanistan today….the shadow government is far more successful than the “elected” government….how many troops will it take to change that development?  I do not believe we have enough troops in service to America to make this a win win situation.
