Daily Agitator
Thirty years ago when the government started its assault on tobacco, I said then that we have not seen the end of it if it was to be successful…..back in the day, I did not think that any bad would come to the tobacco industry for they had the “clout”…I was mistaken….and then they came for trans fats….and again I was mistaken……now they are coming at sugar….in the form of a tax on the sodas and such……
And back during the start of the tobacco tax, I said, that if they succeeded then there would be NO stopping them elsewhere….looks like I was a seer and did not know it…..
And then I was listening to the news on XM Radio and heard the magic word, Tax” and this time they were calling for a tax on red meat….atr first I thought I was once again mistaken….after a little Googling for the helluva it I found this on taxmeat.com:
PETA is calling on members of Congress to support a “sin” tax on meat. Why? Among other reasons, meat is the number one cause of global warming, a looming environmental disaster that threatens the United States with billions of dollars in damages from rising sea levels, worsening storms, and increased droughts. A tax on meat would help prevent future global warming-related natural disasters by encouraging a decrease in meat consumption.
A 10-cent tax on every pound of chicken, turkey, pig, fish, and cow flesh sold in grocery stores and restaurants would also help reduce Americans’ skyrocketing annual health care costs by encouraging people to eat less meat. According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are less prone than meat-eaters to develop heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer or to become obese. Revenue from the tax could be used to fund education programs about the health and environmental benefits of reducing meat consumption.
There goes the burgers on the barbie thingy!
Okay, dipsticks…when is enough enough? I would have said that this was not possible….but then I think back to my disbelief on the tobacco tax so many years ago and I wonder…..
I wonder where all this intervention in people’s personal lives and decisions will cease….just like the seatbelt thing…Americans want to drive 80 mph into a tree and walk away….they are trying to protect people from themselves…..who and when did we give them this option?
Once again I would like to ask where will this stop? What will be next? Salt is bad for your health, when will it be the next thing in the bull’s eye of taxes?
Damn right!
So called “sin” taxes are, to the various nosey, interfering assholes that support the idea, a tax on things that THEY regard as bad. Why anyone would want to live in their bland, all is calm, “perfectly good” world I have no idea, in fact I don’t think most people WOULD want to live, period, if things were truly like that. However, I digress (how unusual is that?)
On the other hand, to governments everywhere (none of whom actually give a shit about the welfare of the people), “sin” taxes are simply an absolutely glorious excuse to rip the public off for yet more of its money to spend on themselves, or their own particular daft ideas, and still keep their “holier than thou” hat firmly in place.
Assholes all of them on both sides – the busybodies and the thieving politicians 👿
As usual….SPOT ON! They will come after something else if they succeed…….alcohol will be in the cross hairs…but that will be in about 10-20 years when all those people that remember prohabition are dead….and then there will be little opposition.
Alcohol is already in the cross-hairs in the UK – what happened to educating young people to have a bit of respect for themselves and others?
It probably went the way of the dodo, as it has in the US…..if they would put it into a game then maybe we would have a better chance….Rewspect? That is as dead as Abraham Lincoln….sorry to say….
Oh, yes, and whilst we’re at it – all the strict vegetarians I’ve known spend most of their lives trying to learn enough to be able to eat healthily and most of them don’t succeed. Eating meat, particulaly bone marrow and fish is currently thought to be the most likely stimulus that allowed us as a species to develop into the animals we are today. Furthermore, meat DOESN’T make people fat (and nor does fat come to that) simple carbohydrates in association with lack of exercise and bad lifestyles are probably the principle causes, although you’ll waste away and die if you cut out carbohydrates altogether too.
It’s just BULLSHIT! ALL of it! What increases obesity is plain old GREEDY EXCESS! Something America and seemingly the UK are both very good at and which, incidentally, was the root cause of our current financial plight in the world!
I tried to email you but your spam protector would not forward the message after I filled out the protector information. Perhaps we could add each other’s blog to our blogrolls. Also, you asked about posting from another blog. I know it is possible, but I don’t know how to do it. Say if I wanted one of your posts to show up on my blog, i would do something that would send a message to you to either approve or deny it.
On your note on Mississippi, I agree and I need to write a post on such problems in restoring federalism. To be sure, it is certainly no longer the case that the best people going into government stay in state government. That didn’t use to be the case. At any rate, I agree I need to take that into account.
Thanks for your comment. I’m essentially writing my email reply here so no need to publish this as a reply to your post above.
I have added you to my blogroll…and I apologize for the probs with the spam blocker…..I look forward to you posts and comments….
Congratulations to “the agitator” on a bullseye. The self appointed “do gooders” need to stop smoking, stop drinking, and stop enjoying life. There are a few of us hoboes that want to enjoy a cigar, glass of port, after consuming a slightly rotting steak! Life is short enough, but the “do gooders” want everyone to feel like it’s eternity because it is boring forever. Politicians don’t care, they just will waste the tax money for any fancy.
hoboduke……thanx for the visit always good to see you……as I said … am waiting to see who is the next victim if this one passes….BTW, PETA has gone from an organization of concerned citizens to an outfit of ass clowns…I think that Daddy needs to take care of business at home and maybe these santimonious ass wipes would not need to fill their day with meddling…..
I have only one true fear in our current democracies (the EU and the US)…
If the politicians and others in power EVER do something useful that they are elected to do and STOP MEDDLING in things that are f*ck all to do with them, then Armageddon surely cannot be far behind! 👿
I know what you mean…every time they do something they promised I look to see if there is ice forming…..my grandfather use to say that we have two useless people in the States…horse traders and Politicians……
I am beginning to wonder at what point the people are going to wake up and smell the coffee (which I am sure will be on the next tax the hell out of list – to much caffine). Maybe to shut Peta up we should suggest a tax on rabbit food…Which I am sure would get their dander up…If you add up all the taxes on a dollar, you are in the negative. No wonder people can’t make ends meet anymore…anyway enough ranting for the moment. and Good morning Lobotero..lol
Morning Sue and thanx for stopping by…if you could show PETA that picking lettuce would cause harm to the plant then you may be right…….after all plants are either killed or their babies are eaten…..you may be on to something….
