Sex And The Debt Debate

I read a headline while I was surfing last week and came across one that made me just have to read…..The debt ceiling deal could make America’s STD problem much worse”….I immediately thought….what does sex have to do with the debt deal?

And yes I had to read the story and I would like to share it here…..

Senior Biden administration officials and public health leaders are warning that debt ceiling negotiations around clawing back unspent Covid-19 money would have an unintended consequence: increasing sexually-transmitted diseases.

The potential cuts — one of the few seeming areas of agreement between House Republicans and the White House — could sap as much as $30 billion from state and local public health departments that are struggling to rebuild as Covid-19 wanes. Funding clawbacks would undermine work to slow the spread of syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV and hepatitis, and leave the country weaker in the face of future pandemics.

States and cities are counting on unspent Covid funds to support the ranks of local public health workers who test people for sexually transmitted infections, find and contact others who were exposed, and direct people to treatment, efforts crucial to limiting the spread of STDs.

“There’s no doubt” the cuts would hurt efforts to “rebuild our public health infrastructure,” Leandro Mena, director of the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, told POLITICO at the annual conference of STD Directors in New Orleans. “If we don’t have a robust workforce ready, who’s going to be there when we have our next outbreak?”

Now you know what sex and the debt ceiling deal have in common.

Are you not pleased that you asked?

As long as we are talking about STDs….

I always post about what is happening in my state of Mississippi…..my state made another list…this tine it is STDs….

Mississippi’s capital city has the second-highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases in the U.S., according to a new study. Innerbody used data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to determine the list of cities with high rates of STDs. Jackson was the only Mississippi city to make the list and is second to Memphis. New Orleans ranked sixth. With 1,358 cases per 100,000 people the state capital city ranked second in the U.S. Jackson reported 105 HIV cases, 6,144 chlamydia cases, 3,587 gonorrhea cases and 607 syphilis cases. Jackson has a population of about 149,761.

A New SUPER Thing

My last day and back to the mental masturbation that is our political system…..

It seems that almost weekly there is a new SUPER hero hitting the screens across the country…..Green Lantern, Capt. America, yada, yada……then there are supermarkets, super bugs, super secrets and so forth……do you remember the VW called the Super Bug?……speaking of bugs…….and then there are those STD’s like syphilis, clap, herpes, aids and many more….but can we call any of them Super?

Well, to be honest…..yes we can!

From an article in the Global Post……

Scientists are warning of a new, untreatable strain of gonorrhea, discovered in a sex trade worker in Japan.

The mutant strain of gonorrhea, a common sexually transmitted disease also known as “the clap,” is resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics, according to research presented at a conference on STDs held in Quebec City, reports Canada’s National Post.

Scientists from the Swedish Reference Laboratory have warned that the new “super” strain of the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea, dubbed H041, is resistant to cephalosporins, a fourth-generation class of antibiotics. Unemo warned of a “future era of untreatable gonorrhea,” with the STD posing a major threat to public health.Gonorrhea is one of the world’s most common STDs, but if left untreated it can cause serious, life-threatening health complications in both women and men.

Symptoms of gonorrhea include a burning sensation when urinating, and the STD can cause discharge from the genitals, the BBC says. But some 50 percent of women infected with gonorrhea, and 2 to 5 percent of men, have no symptoms.

Holy Crap!  Once again it comes down to the only sex that is practiced without the fear of some sort of infection or such is……phone sex……… and that is the new definition for “oral sex”….it is about as much enjoyment as watching someone eat a great steak….Jesus…they can just suck (no pun intended) the fun out of anything, right?

More Sex Studies (Go Figure)

From time to time I bitch about the endless studies that we hear about almost daily…….some are good (I guess) and others seem like a waste of time and money….below are two more to add to the endless array of studies….but if you can get grant cash for a study, then SEX would be the ideal study….

The sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea risks becoming a drug-resistant “superbug” if doctors do not devise new ways of treating it, a leading sexual health expert said.

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial sexually-transmitted infection and if left untreated can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women.

Globally, the WHO estimates that there are at least 340 million new cases of curable sexually transmitted infections — including syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis — every year among people aged 15 to 49.

Ison said the highest incidences of gonorrhea were in south and southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, but as yet the WHO has no breakdown by individual infection type.

Current treatment for gonorrhea in most countries consists of a single antibiotic dose of either cefixime or ceftriaxone.

So gentlemen, keep an eye on the prize……a sick wnkie has NO chance to reward….

Could there possibly more?  You bet your scrotum there is……

The number of head and neck cancers linked to a virus spread by oral sex is rising rapidly and suggests boys as well as girls should be offered protection through vaccination, doctors said Friday.

Despite an overall slight decline in head and neck cancers in recent years, cases of a particular form called oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have increased sharply, particularly in the developed world.

This growth seems to be linked to cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), scientists said in a report in the British Medical Journal.

More than 500,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed annually in women and it kills around 200,000 a year. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer among men and women, with about 640,000 new cases each year worldwide.

A recent study found the risk of developing oropharyngeal carcinoma was linked to a history of six or more lifetime sexual partners, four or more lifetime oral sex partners, and, for men, an earlier age at first sexual intercourse.

“Sexual transmission of HPV — primarily through orogenital intercourse — might be the reason for the increase in incidence of HPV related oropharyngeal carcinoma,” wrote Mehanna.

Thanx to Reuters for the above articles……

These types of studies just suck all the fun out of SEX (pun intended)……

Guys? Keep Your Johnson In A Safe Place

From time to time there comes to my attention a story that should scare the living Hell out of all those people that frequent the “meat markets” in search of the love of a lifetime….this is just such a story……and Damn!  I am so please to be a old guy and not have to worry about this type of stuff….

As many as one in four U.S. teenage girls have had a sexually transmitted disease (STD), many infected soon after their first sexual encounter, a new government report shows.”The high burden of STDs among teen girls reminds us that we can’t ignore this,” said study author Dr. Sami L. Gottlieb, from the division of sexually transmitted disease prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention.

For the study, Gottlieb’s team collected data on 838 teen girls aged 14 to 19. Using samples provided by the teens, the researchers looked for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, herpes simplex virus type 2 and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The study authors found that 24.1 percent of the girls had one of these STDs and among girls who were sexually experienced, 37.7 percent had an STD. HPV was the most common infection (18.3 percent), followed by chlamydia (3.9 percent).

Moreover, in the year after having their first sexual experience and with only one sex partner, 19.2 percent of the teens developed an STD, Gottlieb’s group found.

To counter these problems, teens need to have early sex education, Gottlieb noted. “The vast majority of people have sex for the first time during their teenage years, so we need them to be prepared,” she said.

This study also makes a strong case for routine vaccination against HPV, as it is the most common sexually transmitted infection, Katz said. “Since HPV is often acquired so soon after the initiation of sexual activity, early vaccination is the way to go. I speak on this as the father of two young teenage daughters, both of whom have received the Gardasil vaccine,” he added.

Another report released by the CDC last week provided more statistics.

Teen girls aged 15 to 19 accounted for the largest number (409,531) of the 1.5 million reported chlamydia and gonorrhea cases in the United States in 2008, followed by women aged 20 to 24, according to the annual federal report.

The researchers also found that black females continue to have a higher rate of STDs than any other racial or ethnic group.

Last year, there were about 1.2 million reported cases of chlamydia and nearly 337,000 reported cases of gonorrhea in the United States, according to the report.

Yep…a lot of this type of stuff could be prevented if there were a “real” program of sex ed in schools….but instead most states want to push some damn silly program like abstinence only….which has been a dismal failure from the get go…..so none of the recommendations will be met and the vicious cycles continues….and we have no one to blame but our own stupidity……the time to do something about this lack of knowledge and education is NOW…not after your Johnson falls off and you pee through a plastic tube……

Coffee’s Not All That Drips

Another Sunday arrives and not much news to post on….so the SEX has it!

The prevalence of quinolone-resistant gonorrhea has increased rapidly in Ontario – Canada’s most populous province – from a rate of 2% in 2001 to 28% in 2006, found a study published in CMAJ http://www.cmaj.ca/press/pg287.pdf. Infections in heterosexual men appear to have contributed to the increased rate of resistance.

Other studies have associated quinolone-resistant gonorrhea with men having sex with men, antibiotic use, over 35 years of age and travel to Asia.

“The magnitude of the rate of resistance to quinolone in Ontario is unusually high by any threshold reported in North America,” state Dr. Susan Richardson from The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and coauthors. “Given Ontario’s large population and its status as a major economic centre and national transit hub, its epidemiology is likely to influence epidemiological trends in other provinces of Canada.”

After several years of declining infection rates, Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are on the rise in Canada and many other countries, with health ramifications as the disease can cause infertility and serious blood, joint and immune complications.

The study findings underscore the current recommendations in Canada not to use quinolones for treatment of N. gonorrhoeae infections. Ongoing testing for antibiotic resistance is necessary, although new testing methods are replacing methods that test for susceptibility. “The importance of using culture diagnostics for N. gonorrhoeae needs to be communicated to clinicians, laboratories and public health organizations,” conclude the authors.

In a related commentary http://www.cmaj.ca/press/pg268.pdf, Dr. John Tapsall from Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia states “in developed countries, the spread of quinolone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae infection has followed a pattern in which different resistant subtypes are imported, sometimes over many years. The subtypes are eventually introduced into a country’s sexual networks and then achieve sustained endemic transmission.”

Appropriate antibiotic use is crucial for controlling drug-resistance in community-acquired pathogens. A sustained global approach is needed to reduce the rates of drug-resistant gonorrhea and to control the disease. All countries are at risk of the spread of even more resistant strains of this highly adaptable pathogen.
