Invasion Of The Swine (Flu)

Let the hysterics begin.

There are 20 confirmed cases in the US, six in Canada and one in Spain, the first case in Europe. In most cases outside Mexico, people have been only mildly ill and have made a full recovery.

In other developments:

• Tests are also being carried out on individuals or groups in New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Britain and Israel who fell ill following travel to Mexico

• A top US health official has warned that there could be “more severe cases” to come

• Shares in airlines have fallen sharply on fears about the economic impact of the outbreak

Come on people–IT IS THE FLU! Buy some Tamflu, avoid sick people and wash your filthy hands. And maybe get that flu shot you have been avoiding. But by NO means panic.

It is killing people in 3rd world countries where there is one doctor for every 10,000 people. It is not some terrorist attack. There are no pigs waiting at the border with bombs and guns poised to attack. It is a health issue not a national security one.

Why would the Homeland Security people be involved? Damn people salmonella kills more people than this and has put a lot more in the hospital. IT IS A FLU!

The media has turned it into some sensational story and has driven the American people to madness. This is why Americans use the emergency room as their family doctor–the media drives the hysteria. The media keeps going back to the early 1900’s and the death associated with a flu outbreak….think about it….back then there were few doctors and most of America was poor…a pretty good combo for death from a flu…huh?

Stock up on meds, keep clean and stay away from sickos…….now you have the ammo to combat the terrible intrusion of the swine terror. Have we as a country lost all common sense or just gullible?

Yes Irene, There Is A God!

HA!  The best news one could get on a Sunday.

Many years ago I had a run in with this person and it was not a pretty one……

A former US Ku Klux Klan chief arrested here on a speaking tour was freed during the night but will be forced to leave the country later Saturday, Czech police said.

David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Louisiana-founded Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, arrived in Prague on Friday at the invitation of a local far-right group, Narodni Odpor (National Resistance).

The 59-year-old US citizen had been due to give three lectures in Prague and Brno in the east of the country and present the Czech translation of his 1998 book “My Awakening.”

He was arrested Friday afternoon in the Black Eagle restaurant in Prague’s old town and questioned for several hours on suspicion of promoting movements seeking the suppression of human rights, police said.

His book contains passages denying the Holocaust, a crime punishable by up to three years in prison in the Czech republic, police spokesman Jan Mikulovsky said.

Here is a thought…..maybe one should know the local laws before venturing into a deal to spew hate and discord.  Just a thought!

Where Empires Go To Die

I apologize for I cannot recall who coined this phrase…..but no truer statement has ever been uttered.

The Mongols tried and failed…….The Brits tried and failed miserably…….the Soviets tried and were soundly defeated and internationally embarrassed.

A country that is basically in the 9th century and few have ever succeeded in defeating it.  A country whose literacy rate is about 28%.  A country whose people earn about $800 a year.  A country whose major industry is the cultivation of poppies for the purpose of opium production.  The country in question is Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama and other top officials in his administration have made it clear that there can be no military solution in Afghanistan, and that the non-military efforts to win over the Afghan population will be central to its chances of success.

The reality, however, is that U.S. military and civilian agencies lack the skills and training as well as the institutional framework necessary to carry out culturally and politically sensitive socio-economic programs at the local level in Afghanistan, or even to avoid further alienation of the population.

But why will it be an impossible task?

In fact, the U.S. government does not even have a minimum corps of people capable of speaking Pashto, the language of the 14 million ethnic Pashtuns who represent about 42 percent of the population of Afghanistan. It is in the Pashtun southern and eastern regions of the country that the complex insurgency that has come to be called the Taliban has been able to organize and often effectively govern at the village level in recent years.

The United States needs “thousands” of Pashto speakers to have any chance of success in winning them over, said Mason, recalling that 5,000 U.S. officials had learned Vietnamese by the end of the Vietnam War. “The Foreign Service Institute should be turning out 200 to 300 Pashto speakers a year,” he said.

Beyond the language barrier there are other impotent responses being repeated by the US troops even after the Soviets proved it was not the way to fight in Afghanistan.

One of the hallmarks of that role, which has continued since 2006, is heavy reliance on air power as a means of trying to weaken the insurgency. Barno, now director of the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University, told IPS in an interview last September, “There is a predilection to use air power in lieu of close up encounters [with insurgents] to avoid U.S. casualties.”

Barno recalled that he dramatically reduced reliance on air power, because he regarded the Afghan tolerance for the U.S. military presence as a “bag of capital” that was used up “every time we used air power or knocked down doors or detained someone in front of their family.”

And then there is the Afghan people.  These people have no problem with the hardships of war, the terrain, the weather, etc.  But they do have a problem with civilian deaths, it was one of the driving forces of resistance when the Soviets were playing the war game.

Growing Afghan anger at the hundreds of civilian casualties from U.S. air strikes, often based on bad intelligence, has been exploited by insurgents across the country.  If the amount of casualities cannot be lowered, then the US is in for a long stay in Afghanistan, remember Vietnam, it too was unwinnable.

Great News On The Economic Front! NOT!

Wells Fargo posted a profit in the 1st quarter of 2009…….same with Goldman-Sachs, the AIG company…….it looks like the economy is beginning to turn around…..Stop!…think again!

A month-long upturn in the stock market has sparked a round of optimistic media commentaries and statements by Obama administration officials suggesting that the US economy is on the road to recovery. But any serious examination of the state of both the financial system and the broader economy suggests that such celebrations are unwarranted.

The surge in the stock market shows that the American ruling elite is confident that the Obama administration will do everything in its power to protect the interests of the banks and finance capital.

But for all the joy on Wall Street, the market remains extremely volatile. Despite the bailout plan, none of the underlying problems caused by billions of dollars of “toxic”, that is, worthless, financial assets, has been resolved either in the US or internationally. Consequently, the market remains highly vulnerable to adverse developments which could see a reversal as dramatic as the present rise.

The latest rise was likewise sparked by a positive Wall Street response to an Obama intervention on its behalf, as the vast dimensions of the next round of the Treasury bailout of the financial system became known. The market rise could well give way to a new market plunge, however, particularly in the event of new financial shocks, like the failure or federal takeover of another large banking institution, such as Citibank or Bank of America, or a major assault on the overvalued US dollar.

All the “profits” being posted by banks that were a month ago failing miserably is a bit suspect….at least in my opinion….it also helps that the accounting of “toxic” assets has changed in the company’s favor.  So it is with a stroke of a pen that there is profit, not the health of the company.  This is just using the new accounting techniques.  These games allow these companies to make something out of nothing.

Wall Street is celebrating the fact that it has, in the Obama administration, a completely reliable and docile instrument of its interests.  And the working class will continue to suffer.  With all the favors that has been done for the banks, there is still NO loosening of credit, as a matter of fact, banks are making it more difficult for consumers to get the credit they need to help the demand curve…..and without that recovery is further away.

Class dismissed.

Fraud Is Fraud

For years I have heard all about the “welfare queens”, you know those people that defraud the government on assistance programs like food stamps, welfare payments, etc.  Oh, the outrage at finding one of these offenders.  Then more recently it has been the CEOs of banks that have been the target of the people’s rage.  You know all those massive paychecks they got for killing a company or the massive benefit packages they got.  LOts of outrage from the average person.

I just thought I would add to everyone’s rage with this tidbit.

For anyone who wants to know where underfunding and under-staffing of the Small Business Administration leads, check out this report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The GAO writes of rampant abuse of the SBA’s HUB(Historically Underutilized Business)Zone program, which awarded $8 billion in federal contracts to some 4,200 certified small businesses in 2007. Specifically, the report details misrepresentation by 19 companies that falsely claimed HUB status to qualify for nearly $30 million in prime contracts and $187 million in federal contracts between 2006 and 2007.

According to the report:

“One Alabama firm listed its principal office as ‘Suite 19,’ but when GAO investigators performed a site visit, they found the office was in fact trailer 19 in a residential trailer park. The individual living in the trailer had no relationship to the HUBZone firm.”

The same company, which performs ground maintenance, received nearly $1 million in HUB contracts between 2006 and 2007, the GAO says.

Small businesses that participate in the HUBZone program must meet various criteria, including having a main office and at least 35% of their employees living in the zone. The report blames lack of SBA internal and fraud controls, including failure to make site visits to a majority of the companies applying for HUB status.

Another excellent program that has fallen into crap.  I point this out because I would like to see “fair and balanced” report on ALL fraud not just some little old lady in Peoria that is trying to make a buck extra.

Could This Explain The Bad Math Scores?

Okay this one is not that sexy, but needs to be said.

Many U.S. schools ban chewing gum because children often dispose of the sticky chaw under chairs or tables.

But a team led by Craig Johnston at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found that students who chewed gum during math class had higher scores on a standardized math test after 14 weeks and better grades at the end of the term than students in the class who did not chew gum. The study was funded by chewing gum maker Wrigley.

Leveille said Wrigley has gotten feedback from many of its gum customers who say chewing gum helps them stay focussed.

So, four years ago the company started the science institute to see if some of these claims have merit.

The researchers at Baylor studied four math classes or 108 students aged 13 to 16 years old from a Houston, Texas, charter school that serves mostly low-income Hispanic students.

About half got free Wrigley’s sugar-free gum to chew during class, homework and tests. They chewed at least one stick of gum 86 percent of the time they were in math class and 36 percent of the time they were doing homework.

Another Wrigley-funded study found that college students in a lab who were given difficult computer tasks had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol when they were chewing gum compared to when they were not.

Leveille said he thinks chewing gum helps reduce stress so students can do their best work. And while he is aware that many schools have a dim view of students chewing gum in class, he hopes the findings may change that a bit.

Pres. Lugo, The Baby Maker

Many of the South American presidents screw all their people, but there is one that prefers only the female ones.  After all it is Sexy Sunday!

Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo says he will not resign over claims by three women that he fathered children with them while he was a Catholic priest.

Mr Lugo came to power last August, ousting the right-wing Colorado party that had governed Paraguay for six decades.

The Pope only released him from his vows of chastity last July, two years after Mr Lugo renounced the priesthood.

This month, three women have come forward claiming that the former Roman Catholic bishop is the father of their children.

Mr Lugo, 57, acknowledges a two-year-old boy born to a former parishioner as his own, but has not commented on the paternity of the others, a 14-month-old boy and a 6-year-old boy.

Calling the cases “private” during the news conference, he told journalists he could not keep answering questions without neglecting his duties as president.

He said he would leave the matter in the hands of the justice system.

A Paraguayan bishop, Rogelio Livieres, had called for Mr Lugo to resign.

On Friday, a senator from a party currently aligned with Mr Lugo’s also urged him to step down.

Fertile little devil, ain’t he?

2009 Anal-Ocity

There has been a wealth of idiotic statements recently, but I could not find one that was so anal that I had to post on it……that was then…this is now!

This anal statement is from the mouth of Rep. Shimkus, Republican from Illinois.  He is so against the Obama energy bill that he made this observation:

“largest assault on democracy and freedom in this country that I’ve ever experienced. I’ve lived through some tough times in Congress—impeachment, two wars, terrorist attacks. I fear this more than all of the above activities that have happened.”

OMG!  It is worse than 9/11?  Does that sound like someone who should be deciding the future of the country?  I am sorry but the GOP needs to muzzle some of their members or they will continue to lose support among the people as they see just how out of touch the Party is.

Is There A Treatment For “Gay”?

I thought that this issue had been settled years ago….but I see the religious people will not accept the findings from the past and still push the opinion that being “gay” is some sort of disease or mental illness.

Plans to promote medical treatment for homosexuality at a religious conference have been criticised by doctors.

The event will hear from prominent American psychologist Dr Joseph Nicolosi who said he had helped many people to become heterosexual.

Dr Nicolosi said he had been helping people to “increase their heterosexual potential” for 25 years, and put his success rate among men at about two out of three.

He said he was offering a choice for people who were unhappy being gay.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) said there was no evidence that the treatment worked, and that it was likely to cause considerable distress.

An RCP spokesman said: “There is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed.

“Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination can flourish.”

The Royal College said the American Psychiatric Association had concluded there was no scientific evidence that homosexuality was a disorder and removed it from its diagnostic glossary of mental disorders in 1973.

They are still pushing the possiblity that homosexuality is some sort of mental disorder.

Dear GOP: Stop Playing Games!

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is facing calls for her ouster from a handful of House Republicans in the wake of a department memo that warned of right-wing political extremism in the United States.

“To me, it looks like the extremists are those running the DHS,” said Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn. “An official document of the DHS lists right-wing extremists as ‘groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,’ and includes those ‘rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority.’ So, apparently, according to Homeland Security Department, the American ideal of federalism is a threat to American ideals.”

First of all, the GOP is just plain stupid for letting this broad anywhere near a microphone.  She has proven to be ignorant and misleading.

And then there is Boner, damn…sorry…Boehner, the minority leader.

House Minority Leader John Boehner said it’s become clear to him that the idea of bipartisanship “was a ruse.”

“I think if you look at the first 100 days, you can sum it up pretty simply: spending, taxing, borrowing and ducking the hard choices,” Boehner said at a news conference Thursday.

Democratic policies, he said, are “going to hurt our economy and hurt jobs in America.”

Boehner keeps throwing the original talking points from day one of the Obama Admin….spending, taxing and borrowing.  Hard choices?  If Obama has not taken on the hard choices what would the GOP call the issues that have been addressed?

The Ohio Republican said Americans are “fed up with this unprecedented level of spending and borrowing that’ll imprison the future for our kids and their kids,” and he said the Republican Party has offered up better solutions in recent months.

Funny that is not what the polls are saying.

Obama’s job approval as president stands at 63% in a poll released this morning by the Washington-based Pew Research Center — with just 26% of those surveyed saying they disapprove of the way that Obama is handling his job.

The president draws a similar rating in a new poll conducted by the Associated Press and GfK Roper Public Affairs and Media: 64% job approval. The AP-GfK survey also finds, for the first time in five years, more Americans saying the nation is headed in the right direction than those who say it is not.

Those are just a few of the games the GOP is playing.  They still seem oblivious to the fact that they are not doing the country any good.  Theyt get their daily talking points and without much thought go out and echo whatever it is that is the NO-NO of the day.

It is all a game to the GOP, the problem is that they have NO idea how to play anymore.  I guess this is the BEST that the GOP can come up with….sad turn of events for a once proud party.
