The “Obvious” Lessons of the Vietnam War | The American Conservative

40 years ago this year the capital city of the Republic of South Vietnam, Saigon,  fell to the advancing communist forces from the North……

Most American could care less…..but there are still a few of us grunts left to remember……and we want the US to learn a lesson from the misadventures of interventionism…..but did we really learn anything from that war?

We did not learn the proper respect for veterans.  We did not learn the dangers of intervention.  Really….we learned exactly….NOTHING!

47 Years Ago in My Lai: ‘We were there to kill ideology’ – BSNEWS

History is a BITCH!

The year is 1968 in the sleepy little South Vietnamese village of My Lai…….and the incident is something that most Americans have erased from their memories.  But re-writing history does not erase the truth.

It was a dark day and should not be forgotten…..that way maybe it will never happen again……

Did the U.S. Learn Any Lessons From Vietnam? | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

As the world waits for Congress to stop beating around the bush and give Obama his authorization to use force…..maybe step back in history and ask a simple question……do we Americans learn from our past?

When ever I am among others and the dialog turns to war……I am always drawn into the conversation, whether I want to or not……..of course most of them want to put a positive light on the Vietnam thing…..and then I just simply say…”if you were not there then you opinion is moot”….

I have heard this question asked many times…..”did we learn anything from Vietnam”?

My answer is usually short and concise……NO!

Veterans: Unsung Heroes–LRRP

This post and accompanying video may not win any awards…but it helps me deal with some unresolved issues……

We hear all about the exploits of our special forces…..their bravery in the face of danger makes them heroes.  But in these days the public does not seem to care about our vets only when it is convenient for them.

I know not many will care enough to watch this lengthy video and that will be a shame….for these guys deserve better than that…….

We Americans are famous for labels……and hero is one word that I feel we throw around way too often…..this person or that unit is heroic.  Then there are what I call true heroes…unsung heroes because NO one knows of them and hears nothing of their duty.

For years I have been trying to find away to write about the guys I served with in Vietnam….I never could find the right words….and then I found this video by accident…..it thought it perfect……

This video is about such a group….true heroes……whose story has seldom been told.

Please take the time to watch this video….yes, it is lengthy…..but these men deserve recognition and respect that few gave them during their service.  Their duty was truly extraordinary and their legacy has been lost…. wrapped up in the mystic of the Rangers.

They deserve your attention and respect…….Their story is one of duty, honor and selfless action…..if anyone deserves the title of HERO it is these men……I miss you guys!

I apologize….I could not get the video to post so I had try a back door solution……..

PLEASE WATCH!

BBC News – Dien Bien Phu: Did the US offer France an A-bomb?

Keeping on the historical theme…….

If you are not an old fart or did not serve your country in Vietnam then this piece will mean little to nothing to you……..

Dien Bien Phu is the turning point where the US would get involved in the war that France was fighting with the rebels in Vietnam……

A fascinated piece with a bunch of historical stuff attached to it……..read and learn……

BBC News – Dien Bien Phu: Did the US offer France an A-bomb?.

Another Nuke Deal?

We have had to sit through the nuclear age…..we made, we dropped it and then the race was on….the USSR was next….and on came China to join the club…….then India/Pakistan……next would be North Korea….and then along came Iran, who does not have a bomb…yet….but the possibility is there and of course the world went into a deep depression because of Iran and its seeking to join the nuke club.  Much has been said, done and accused because of Iran’s desire…..

All the hoopla about Iran made this story even more bizarre, at least to me……

President Barack Obama has approved an agreement for civilian nuclear cooperation between the US and Vietnam in a sign of deepening ties between the former foes. The US and Vietnamese governments reached agreement in October. Congress now has 90 days to review it. If lawmakers do nothing, the deal will take effect. The “123 agreement,” approved by Obama on Monday, allows US firms into Vietnam’s civilian nuclear power market. Russian and Japanese companies are already planning to build reactors there. Under the US agreement, Vietnam is committing to rely on the international market for its nuclear fuel supply rather than enrich uranium or reprocess plutonium itself. Some lawmakers have expressed concern over the terms of the agreement and over Vietnam’s human rights record.

It all sounds reasonable….but is there anything reasonable in today’s world affairs?

Think about it though…….we will help Vietnam,  a communist country,  get nuke power…..am I the only one that sees a potential problem?  Think spent fuel and what it could be used for in the future if the desire is there……

I Have Had Enough Of These Morons!

It is inevitable that I have this conversation when people learn that I fought in Vietnam……..someone always says we could have won that war if we were allowed to, right Chuk?  My first question to them is, “were you there”…..and almost everytime it is no…….and then I reply….then your opinion means NOTHING!

I bet you are wondering why I bring this up now?

To answer your question….I was reading Raw Story and came upon this piece of crap……

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday asserted that the U.S. war in “Vietnam was winnable, but people in Washington decided we would not win it!”

“One of the things that we’ve heard over and over again since Vietnam is, you know, we don’t want to get in another un-winnable war like Vietnam,” Gohmert told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). “I’m not going to debate the merits of whether we should or should not have gone to Vietnam, but what I will tell you is, Vietnam was winnable, but people in Washington decided we would not win it!”

“Folks, when you hear people talk about the lesson of Vietnam, it ought to be this: You don’t send American men or women to to harm’s way unless you’re going to give them the authority and what they need to win and then bring them home!”

This person is a MORON!  The American soldier did everything he was ordered to do in Vietnam…….we were fighting troops that would take a French 75 apart put it on bikes and walk them across mountains, reassemble and use……..we are talking about troops that would tie tree tops together on the Ho Chi Minh trail to form a tunnel to keep aircraft from spotting them……we were fighting troops that had 75 miles of tunnels that included R&r centers, hospitals, mess halls and ammo storage………we were fighting troops that would repair the Trail after b-52 runs in less than 24 hours…..we were fighting a committed enemy….and any moron that says different is lying!

And anyone especially someone that is suppose to be a statesman that makes comments like Gohmert is a worthless lump of crap!   And anyone who believes his crap is a stupid lump of crap who NEVER served but has all the answers….and that makes him less than worthless!

You may pass on to Mr. Gohmert what I think of him…..I WILL!

2012 Anal-Ocity #16

My readers know that I from time to time find an anal statement that someone in the news makes that is either crazy, stupid, or just plain ignorant…..and then I post them and at the end of the year I have my readers vote on the most anal statement of the year…….

In 2007, I as always was making notes and I found one made by a person in the news about the war in Vietnam and as a vet of that war I found it insulting and a completely ignorant thing to say…….I did not offer it up in 2007 for some reason…my guess is I had a brain fart…..and I found it when I was going back through my notebooks from 2007…..so I want to post it now…better late than never…….

David Barton (born 1954) is an American evangelical Christian minister,  conservative activist, and author. He founded WallBuilders, a Texas-based organization with a goal of exposing the claimed US constitutional separation of church and state as a myth.   Barton is the former co-chair of the Republican Party of Texas.

Okay, we have a Christian activist that has an opinion on the War in Vietnam……

intelligence now shows that had the US just done one more bombing run, the Viet Cong would have surrendered.

This idiot just made it personal!

First, since I was there for 2 and half years, I would tell him, in person, that unless he was actually there he has NO opinion!  My advice is……… SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Second, the North Vietnamese army was just as instrumental in the war as the Viet Cong….

I am tired of all these so-called Americans that have all the answers to what happen in Vietnam and not once had someone shoot at them in anger…..the real problem is that people listen to these insulting a/holes!  Especially detest people like this bonehead that pretends to be some sort of historical expert and then tries to re-write history to suit his pathetic narrative…….

Remembering

Before I start bitching…I want to wish all a Happy Thanksgiving……enjoy family, food and fun…..

Yesterday, I was watching MSNBC at an ungodly early hour and they had the dude from Time previewing the next issue…..about the things over the last decade, 2000-2010, and the military came up and the war in Vietnam was used as a comparison….this is when Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street journal made a statement that I had to devote a post to….she said that “Americans for the most part were supportive of the soldiers that fought in the Vietnam War…..”  She was waxing arrogantly poetic….

As a vet from that war I tell her she is dead WRONG!  When I returned I was NOT treated with respect nor support….I was seen as some leper to be ignored and pushed into the shadows….People in the “heartland” did NOT support the soldiers, they did support the military….NOT the same thing!  They supported the government in its endless battles with Godless Communism….but as far as the poor bastards, like me, that actually did the fighting….NO one gave a shit!  Communism must be defeated at any cost! And we WERE that price!

The media made the soldier, especially the ones protesting for the end of the war, as the enemy from within……and since most people got their information from the 6 o’clock news…..we, the vets of Vietnam, especially those of us that fought for an end of the war, became the enemy…..

Ms, Noonan shows the same lack of memory on what actually was happening in those days…they prefer to pretend it was all different some how and try to re-write the history of those days and make it like Americans are ALWAYS appreciative of their soldiers…..that is NOT the case!

The truth is that the American people owe the vets of Vietnam more than they could ever repay….and this lame attempt to do so is nothing but a slap in the face to all those people that were treated like sh*t by their country and that includes the national media……

When I hear these self-adsorbed, arrogant people who should be searching for the truth, tell out right lies…I feel compelled to say….BULLSH*T!

OOPS! Happened Again!

I have said on many occasions that there are some very good comparisons between Vietnam and Afghanistan….and there are those that think I am mistaken….I understand the whole “stop the Taleban” just as I understood the “Domino Theory” in Vietnam….with that said when you break them down the two wars have more similarities than not….I have talked about the inhospitable terrain…the inhospitable climate….the techniques of war…on and on…..but now let us narrow our analysis to the army of the country……

ARVN–Army of the Republic Of Vietnam (South Vietnam)

Part of the mission in VN was to train the army to fight the North and the US could withdraw and play a supporting role (does that sound familiar?)…..problems arose….ethnicities, non-committal, were the major problems….some units fought well but they were the smaller units like the Rangers, Special Forces, etc….as a whole the army sucked and after many years of trying it sucked even more when the nut cutting came….after all the training and money, the army let the North take the South in less than a month…..all in all the whole war in Vietnam was a massive debacle….so the whole adviser thing was a massive waste of time and resources…..

I know….I know….then what of Afghanistan?

In a report on the Afghan National Army (ANA) which was reported by MSNBC’s Richard Engel who spends his time reporting from Afghanistan….the findings of a new assessment of the ANA….

This is a copy of that report. It was prepared for a briefing for CENTCOM commander, General David Petraeus. It was also copied to his commanding general in Afghanistan. And the military says that it is still a preliminary report, that it’s not final, but that does not change what this says about the Afghan national army, or the ANA.The 25-page study obtained by NBC News says senior Afghan commanders are, quote, “not at war. Many ANA leaders work short days, are often absent and place personal gain above national survival.” The report says Afghan troops simply aren’t leading the fight, but remain dependent on US forces, and show few signs of wanting to take off the training wheels. But what’s striking about the report is that it goes to the heart of President Obama’s argument about the war. When announcing the surge, the president said Afghan forces must be trained and equipped quickly, so American troops can return home. But the report’s section on the Afghan army’s personnel says, “Corruption, nepotism and untrained, unmotivated personnel make success all but impossible.”

And there may not be nearly as many Afghan battalions as the country claims. The report said previous estimates are not believable. “Estimate for soldiers actually in battalions far below reported,” it said. “Example: between 40 and 50 percent in some areas.” And Afghan soldiers still in the ranks have literacy problems, and that “mentally, physically unfit and drug addicts hurt units.”

Perhaps the most controversial finding, however, has to do with timing. President Obama has said he wants the troop surge to start drawing down in July 2011. But the assessment said it will take time to expand and rehabilitate Afghan forces. The report said it “cannot take a year to fix this problem.”

The report is dated from mid-December, and it just goes on and on, mostly complaining about leadership and corruption within the Afghan security forces.

The unpublished report says exactly what I have been saying…..the ANA will NEVER be ready to defend the government from outside agitators….sorry to say…Afghanistan smells like a colossal waste….just as Vietnam was……once again a similarity that does not exist….wink wink….you betcha!  (sarcasm)
