American War Dead

WE Americans continue to die in defense of our country.  We have died in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and the list goes on.  It is a sad occasion when I have to write another post about more Americans dying in wars of no interests.

Yesterday here on IST we reported of yet another American killed in Iraq and it is out sad duty to report today that 3 more Americans have been killed but this time it is in West Africa……

US officials say three US Army special operations commandos were killed Wednesday and two others were wounded when they came under fire in southwest Niger. The officials say the two wounded were taken to Niamey, the capital, and are in stable condition, the AP reports. The officials say the commandos, who were Green Berets, were likely attacked by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb militants. In a statement, US Africa Command said the American forces were on a joint patrol with Nigerien Armed Forces troops north of Niamey, near the Mali border, when they came under hostile fire.

Africa Command said the US forces are in Niger to provide training and security assistance to the Nigerien Armed Forces in their efforts against violent extremists. The White House says President Trump was notified about the attack Wednesday night as he flew aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Washington. The military says the two wounded soldiers will soon be transported to Germany for medical treatment, CNN reports.

These deaths made the cable news shows (show me surprised)……

At the time of this writing the names of the dead and wounded have not been released….

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families.

What The Hell Did Venezuela Do?

In case you were out of pocket Friday afternoon and missed the big story then I think I can bring you up to speed.

During a press outing at his gold Club in new Jersey Trump was asked about the North Korean posturing and then he went on a different track altogether….

As many fret over the increasingly tense relationship between the US and North Korea, President Trump threw another country into the mix Friday: Venezuela. Speaking to reporters Friday from his New Jersey golf club, flanked by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, and National Security Adviser HR McMaster, Trump offered what Reuters calls a “surprise escalation” on the US response to Venezuela’s currentpoliticalupheaval, in which more than 120 people have been killed and thousands arrested over the past four months. “Venezuela is not very far away, and the people are suffering and they are dying,” Trump told reporters, per the Hill. “We have many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary.”

When pressed by reporters on whether that meant the US would lead an operation in the South American country, Trump replied, “We don’t talk about it, but a military operation—a military option—is certainly something that we could pursue.” The US just hit Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with financial sanctions in late July, with a statement from Trump noting: “Maduro is not just a bad leader. He is now a dictator.” The Pentagon told Reuters it has yet to receive any instructions from the president regarding Venezuela.

When I heard this report my first response was…”what the Hell did Venezuela do to deserve that threat?”

(Watch Nikki Haley’s reaction)

I am still trying to find out what they did they would warrant such a threat.

Anyone got any ideas?

WTF?

After my Closing Thought I usually shut IST down for the evening but from time to time a story comes out and I just cannot let it go……this is one of those stories…..

We have heard all the “tough” talk that Trump has leveled at the North Korean leader…..the Fire & Fury”…that the US is “Locked & Loaded”…but he has hit a new level of stupid.

Just a short time ago Trump was meeting with the press at his gold club in New Jersey and while answering question he made a bold assertion….

Trump said, “We have many options for Venezuela, and by the way, I’m not going to rule out a military option. We have many options for Venezuela. This is our neighbor. You know, we’re all over the world. We have troops all over the world, in places that are very, very far away. Venezuela is not very far away, and the people are suffering, and they’re dying. We have many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary.”

If you don’t want to read it then listen to it…..

Now the reason I am posting this immediately is because I have NO idea what Venezuela has done to the US that would warrant an attack.

How many more counties is this mad man going to threaten?

Somebody needs to reel in this person before we are fighting every third world country he can think of…….

The title describes this the best….WTF?

What About Military Blunders?

I recently wrote a post about Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, and since that wound up being a total disaster I started thinking about other military blunders….disasters that accomplished little and cost the lives of many.

Let’s look at the last 100 years or so…….

The first one that I thought about was a battle in World War One…..Gallipoli.  An operation attempted by the allies to take on the Ottoman Empire….it was a total bust….

British General Sir Ian Hamilton might not have been a full-fledged ass, but he was certainly a bumbling Ferdinand the bull—shy, courteous and overly accommodating. Unfortunately, Lord Kitchener, Britain’s Secretary of State for War, gave him command of the 1915 invasion of Gallipoli—the amphibious landings by British, French and ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops intended to take Turkey, a German ally, out of the war. The campaign demanded an assertive, tactically brilliant, take-charge commander. Instead, the Allies got a kindly uncle who really didn’t want to interfere with his brigadier nephews.

There were others……

These battles are seldom brought when the study of war is taught….basically because they were failures and few want to know about the military’s failures.

Your history lesson is complete……more to come (insert heavy sighs)…

Class dismissed.

Walking Our Way To More War

I have been bitching for years about the fact that the US uses military force without proper authorization…..and recently a few brave reps in Congress have offered up their bills to change the way we use military force….these events I have written about recently……

Source: Some Real “Men” In Congress After All – In Saner Thought

I wrote my post when I heard the news of these attempts….but I had not read any of the proposed bills…..like the most recent one, the Flake-Kaine Authorization Bill….

Source: Flake-Kaine AUMF | United States House Of Representatives | United States Senate

After reading the above bull I found myself concerned about the wording.  While I applaud the reps for their effort I am not too sure that anything would change if it is ever signed by this president.  In other words ir sounds like a sugar coated business as usual…..

I decided to do a little research to see if there were any others with similar concerns…..there were……

The 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force has been used to justify military strikes around the world – dubiously, in the opinion of many legal scholars.

In their place, the new legislation would allow military action against the Taliban, al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS, along with “associated groups,” specifically including Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front), the so-called Khorasan Group, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and al-Shabab.

Military action would be allowed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Libya and Yemen.

If the president wanted to take military action against additional associated groups or inside countries not specifically named, he would have to notify Congress, which would then have the option of passing a motion of disapproval.

Source: Bipartisan War Authorization Bill Would Make Trump ’21st Century Version of King George III’ | US News

This is an open-ended authorization to attack anyone by simply stating that they are “associated” with AQ or ISIS…..

Again I just do not see this as anything different than what is being done today……the only good thing is there is an expiration date on the AUMF….5 years.

Memorial Day–2017

Today will be a short day for my posts….I will spend most of the day doing what I do on every Memorial Day…..spend the day remembering the members of my team that did not return home to their families….RJ, Jay and Little Tommy….to this day I miss them terribly.

Today is the day set aside for Americans to remember the war dead.  To remember those that gave their lives in service of their country.  Sadly to most it means nothing more than a day off from work…….our fallen soldiers deserve better than that…..

There will be many fancy words about the day from people that have NO idea what it is like to watch a fellow soldier die…..but they will spout a bunch of “patriotic” crap that means NOTHING.  At least our war dead will get one day of what passes for respect by their countrymen……

Please take a few moments out of your day of fun, food and family to remember those brave souls that went off to do their duty and never returned.

If any of my readers are a “Gold Star” family I would like to say to them…I am sorry for your loss….may you never know such grief again.

I end this post with a tune from my past…..

….and I shall return tomorrow with more “cool” stuff.  chuq

This Is Your Brain On Drugs!

In wartime the use, official use, of drugs goes up…..the Germans kept their soldiers high on meth so they would fight longer and stronger……during Vietnam War troops that were on long missions were given Black Mollies, if I need to explain them then you are too young, kept them alert and ready for the actions to come.

Apparently not much has changed over the years……

Tampa Bay is hosting the Special Operation Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) this week and the floor of the marketplace is an impressive place to see. Some of the best manufacturers of weapons and equipment are there with their latest wares and it is a maze of cool gear for the cool guys and a ton of other must-have items.  Walking around the market place I was searching for a pitchman that looked like Ivan Drago.

In an interview with Defense News, Ben Chitty, Senior Project Manager for Biomedical, Human Performance and Canine Portfolios in the Science and Technology office at USSOCOM said that the command is looking for ways to increase Special Operations troops performance with diet, nutritional supplements and even performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Is the military created “junkies” yet again…..and you thought the Vietnam days were behind us…….think again!

Time for me to go and take some time away from the keyboard…a nice cup of tea would be helpful…..see everyone tomorrow with more stuff…..chuq

Is Assassination by Another Name The Same?

Our most successful program in our endless wars seems to be our drone program…unfortunately we are also killing civilians at an alarming rate….the US odes have a history of assassinating political leaders in the past but that program was abandoned in the 1970’s…..abandoned with Ford’s EO #11905…….

In 1976, President Ford issued Executive Order 11905 to clarify U.S. foreign intelligence activities. The order was enacted in response to the post-Watergate revelations that the CIA had staged multiple attempts on the life of Cuban President Fidel Castro.

In a section of the order labeled “Restrictions on Intelligence Activities,” Ford outlawed political assassination: Section 5(g), entitled “Prohibition on Assassination,” states: “No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination.”

Since 1976, every U.S. president has upheld Ford’s prohibition on assassinations. In 1978 President Carter issued an executive order with the chief purpose of reshaping the intelligence structure. In Section 2-305 of that order, Carter reaffirmed the U.S. prohibition on assassination.

In 1981, President Reagan, through Executive Order 12333, reiterated the assassination prohibition. Reagan was the last president to address the topic of political assassination. Because no subsequent executive order or piece of legislation has repealed the prohibition, it remains in effect.

The ban, however, did not prevent the Reagan administration from dropping bombs on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s home in 1986 in retaliation for the bombing of a Berlin discotheque frequented by U.S. troops.

What made me think about this EO from the past was the statement issued by L’il Kim of North Korea……

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of a plot to kill leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korean state news agency KCNA released a report Friday that claims intelligence agencies in the U.S. and South Korea conspired with a “hideous terrorist group” to “commit bomb terrorism targeting the supreme leadership,” CNN reports. It says the plot was “recently uncovered and smashed.”

The document says a North Korean citizen was involved and the assassination would have involved “biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance.”

But then the question becomes since Ford’s EO is the US in the business of assassinating political leaders?

You tell me.

Some of the most notorious of the CIA’s operations to kill world leaders were those targeting the late Cuban president, Fidel Castro. Attempts ranged from snipers to imaginative plots worthy of spy movie fantasies, such as the famous exploding cigars and a poison-lined scuba-diving suit.

But although the CIA attempts proved fruitless in the case of Castro, the US intelligence agency has since 1945 succeeded in deposing or killing a string of leaders elsewhere around the world – either directly or, more often, using sympathetic local military, locally hired criminals or pliant dissidents.

Source: The CIA has a long history of helping to kill leaders around the world | US news | The Guardian

Now the question is…..is L’il Kim onto to something here or just blowing hot air?

Is there a drone with L’il Kim’s name?

Did the US ever abandon the timely art of assassination?  Of course not.

These days the US does not employ many covert operatives to do the dirty work…..instead they call up a drone…..this can go a long way of keeping their hands clean (so to speak)……

The first step in examining the legality of assassinating known or suspected terrorists through the use of unmanned armed vehicles (UAVs) is to decide whether such killings could be classified as part of an armed conflict.  If they are considered as part of an armed conflict, according to international law, the rules of armed conflict would apply; otherwise the laws of self-defence would be relevant.

According to the Geneva Conventions and customary humanitarian law, armed conflict only applies when two or more States are involved.  When the United States defines its campaign against terrorists as a global conflict, this designation is not based on the correct definition of war as characterized by international law but on America’s own interpretation of its effort to eradicate terrorism.  Only two or more States can legally, in the strictest terms, engage in war, not a State against individuals scattered around the globe.

The question remains…..is assassination by another name the same?

Please you thought……

What Price War?

We hear about the cost of war but mostly it is about the human costs….the deaths and the injured……but seldom will anyone bother to look at the dollars and cents of the action.  Why?

Ask yourself….who pays for a war?  That is the question everyone should ask….especially those we send to DC to represent us and our interests.

Do you realize that since 9/11 the cost of the War on Terror has cost the country in the neighborhood of $5 trillion (yep that is trillion with a giant “T”)……and that total was from 2011, ten years into the WoT.

Five trillion dollars: that’s $16,000 per American; $64,000 for a family of four.

The final tally of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan will reach at least $3.7 trillion, and could go as high as $4.4 trillion, according to a study done by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies. Borrowing the money needed to fight the wars will cost an estimated additional $1 trillion through 2020, according to the study.

Its “Costs of War” study group brought together some two dozen academics to account for the wars’ costs — along with their casualties — amid sloppy record-keeping on both fronts. The study says an “extremely conservative” death toll is 225,000, with 365,000 wounded. U.S. dead include 6,000 troops and 2,300 contractors.

The study’s estimate of $4 trillion also includes items not counted by the Pentagon, including homeland security, veterans care and various developmental efforts. Then there is the additional $1 trillion in interest payments on the war debt.

(Time)

War is expensive has anyone considered that one small point?

Never Has a Society Spent More for Less

When Donald Trump wanted to “do something” about the use of chemical weapons on civilians in Syria, he had the U.S. Navy lob 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield (cost: $89 million). The strike was symbolic at best, as the Assad regime ran bombing missions from the same airfield the very next day, but it did underscore one thing: the immense costs of military action of just about any sort in our era.

While $89 million is a rounding error in the Pentagon’s $600 billion budget, it represents real money for other agencies.  It’s more than twice the $38 million annual budget of the U.S. Institute of Peace and more than half the $149 million budget of the National Endowment of the Arts, both slated for elimination under Trump’s budget blueprint. If the strikes had somehow made us — or anyone — safer, perhaps they would have been worth it, but they did not

I am personally sick and tired of the Repubs and their endless prattle about the deficit and then they pass a defense bill that expands the deficit…..they have a racket going…..convince the less educated that spending more money on war will somehow settle the deficit problem.

Only a mental midget would believe such poppycock.

Bomb’s Away!

As it is today the US is dropping bombs on at least 5 different nations through multiple sorties per day…..and that has created a bit of a problem…..

Massive air wars in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan are just the beginning of the story for the United States military, with regular strikes in places like Somalia and Yemen, and constant risks of the US launching a massive war on North Korea at any moment. That’s a lot of bombs being dropped, and mostly in open-ended conflicts.

A year ago, the Pentagon was warning that it was forced to raid its world-wide stockpiles of bombs because they were using so many. Now,, they’re running through those too, and are using smart-bombs faster than they can buy them from massive US arms makers.

That’s a big problem for the Pentagon, because as already the biggest consumer of bombs on the planet by far, there isn’t exactly a ton of leftover capacity for them to draw on. That makes the US air wars literally unsustainable at current levels, because there just aren’t enough bombs on the planet to supply them all

(antiwar.com)

The Defense industry runs non-stop and we still cannot keep up with the number of bombs needed…..does anyone see the problem here?

Thanx everyone for your visits and your comments…I appreciate your visits….time to bow out for the day….chuq
