We Need A ‘Counter-Revolution’

There those out there (of which I am one) that believes that there needs to be a standardize educational program on civics.

For too long the subject of civics has been ignored and attempted to reign the subject to the dust bin of history (I always like the saying)…. most Americans are ignorant on the use of civics and how the government works….

Look at the last election and the response by Americans…..where about 10 millions Americans think the election was stolen or somehow illegitimate…. which NO evidence has proven the claims of a stolen election….all of which lead to the insurrection of 06 January….

So I agree with a statement from the Claremont Institute…..that there needs to be an educational counter-revolution.

Claremont Institute president Ryan Williams says that American civic education faces an acute crisis. In his estimation, essentially every institution – the vast complex of media, Big Tech, Hollywood, Fortune 500 companies, and education and government bureaucracies – teaches “vicious lies about America’s Founders” and our nation’s “heritage, heroes, accomplishments, and people.”

Williams argues that what passes for civic education today advances “the goal of wholesale revolution and the institution of a monstrous and unnatural tyranny.”

In light of these daunting circumstances, however, he counsels hope: “We at Claremont are happy warriors, and there’s no work we’d rather be doing with friends and fellow citizens.”

Williams describes The Claremont Institute, founded in 1979, as a think tank fomenting a “counterrevolution” to recover civic education through teaching, writing, and litigation. Its mission, he continues, is to restore the natural law and natural rights principles of the Declaration of Independence, the “ingenious political science of the Constitution,” and the “popular constitutionalism and reverence necessary for the maintenance of free government” to “their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life.”

I believe that civics is one of the most important subjects that needs more attention in our educational system.

Biden On Education (Again)

As I have been trying to keep my readers up to date on the plans and policies of the Biden admin I keep eye an a ear to the grind stone to make information available as soon as possible…

It is now official….Biden has released his plan….

Students would get four extra years of paid education under the White House’s new $1.8 trillion spending and tax plan, which would also provide paid family and medical leave for US workers. The “American Families Plan” may irk not only Republicans, but progressive Democrats, too. Here’s what in it and what’s not:

  • Child benefit extended: The enhanced child tax credit of at least $250 monthly per child, approved through the $1.9 trillion relief plan in March, is only temporarily extended through 2025, though President Biden has said it should be permanent, reports the Washington Post.
  • Free prekindergarten: All children would be entitled to free prekindergarten at ages 3 and 4 as part of a program the White House expects to cost $200 million over 10 years. Biden has promised to pay employees at least $15 per hour, up from the “typical $12.24 hourly rate” in 2020, per CNN.
  • Free community college: Two-year community colleges are also to be made tuition-free under a $109 billion program. The White House also plans to subsidize two-year tuition for students from families earning less than $125,000 enrolled at minority-serving institutions, including historically Black colleges. Progressives had been calling for free four-year tuition at public colleges and a large-scale canceling of student debt.
  • States would opt in: Individual states choosing to participate would be expected to pay 10% of the costs for the pre-K program initially, but eventually 50%. The federal government plans to cover 75% of community college education costs.
  • Increasing the Pell Grant: To assist low-income students at four-year institutions, which would “become comparatively more expensive,” per the Post, the White House is proposing a $1,400 boost in the maximum Pell Grant award. That represents a 20% increase, though Biden had pledged a 100% increase.
  • Paid family leave: Some $225 billion would be used to kickstart a national paid family and medical leave program, per the AP, though C. Nicole Mason of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research says twice as much funding would be needed to provide 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents. Another $200 billion would go to permanently reduce health insurance premiums for those covered by the Affordable Care Act.
  • What’s missing: There is no measure about reducing prescription drug prices, which was requested by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and progressive lawmakers, per CNN and the Post. Nor is there any measure to lower the Medicare enrollment age, which Biden has promised to do. There is also no estate tax increase.
  • How to pay: The White House expects to pay for this by raising the top tax rate from 37% to 39.6% and nearly doubling the tax rate on capital gains for Americans earning more than $1 million per year from 20% to 39.6%. It further expects to raise $700 billion over the decade by increasing IRS enforcement.
  • Republican opposition: The capital gains tax rate increase is among the measures “likely to face resistance on Capitol Hill,” per the Post. Republicans, upset to see some of former President Trump’s 2017 tax cut reversed, are generally concerned about big spending, especially after the White House unveiled a $2.3 trillion jobs and infrastructure proposal.
  • Making his case: Biden will try to calm fears while pitching what analysts say is “the most far-reaching reform of the US social safety net since the era of President Lyndon B Johnson in the 1960s” in his first address to Congress on Wednesday, per the BBC. Republican Sen. Tim Scott will then issue a rebuttal. “I look forward to … sharing Republicans’ optimistic vision for expanding opportunity and empowering working families,” he says.

I like most of his proposals…..but that does not make them so…..he still has a Senate to contend with and a couple of worthless Dems that will not get on board

Educational Stupidity

I have ranted many times on the problem of stupidity being taught to our children…instead to teaching the need for civics and history they instead want to pass on BS and misinformation to our children.

These two examples illustrate the stupidity that is being considered as part of the educational curriculum….

First from the great state of Louisiana……

A hearing erupted in laughter when one Republican legislator was compelled to tell another that “There’s no ‘good’ to slavery, though.”

The Louisiana House Education Committee held a hearing on HB 564 on Thursday, during which the bill’s author and committee chairman State Rep. Ray Garofalo was grilled by fellow Republican Rep. Stephanie Hilferty on the bill’s prohibition on “divisive concepts” in education.

Hilferty began by grilling Garofalo about the sources of complaints that led him to author the bill.

“Can you give examples of what they told you?” Hilferty asked.

Garofalo described teachers and parents complaining about “handouts” that they’d been given.

“Like what does the handout say?” Hilferty asked.

“Handouts saying the United States is a racist country, that corporations are inherently racist, and have a bias against…” Garofalo began, as Hilferty interrupted to ask “Can you share examples of these with the committee?”

The ‘Good’ side of slavery?

Seriously?

The term indicts that there is and was NOTHING good about slavery.

Next stupidity comes from the great state of Idaho….a bill that would prohibit the teaching of racism….

A bill that would ban teaching critical race theory and other similar teachings in schools in Idaho is awaiting Gov. Brad Little’s signature. 

The bill, HB 377, passed in the state’s senate on Monday after passing through the house last week. It would prohibit public schools from teaching that “any sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior,” which it says can be found in critical race theory. 

The bill also bans teachings that argue that people should be treated differently based on things like race or gender and that people are not responsible for past actions committed by people who share their same demographics.

Personally I believe that there should be a national standard for the teaching of history and civics.

An Education Of Lies

It all began with the 1776 Commission Report.

But wait!

What is the 1776 Commission?

First of all this Commission to revise history had NO historians in the make-up….

The “1776 Report,” released on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, followed Donald Trump’s September announcement to form a commission to refute teachings on systemic racism, critical race theory, and deeper examinations of how slavery has affected American society.

The “crusade against American history is toxic propaganda, ideological poison, that, if not removed, will dissolve the civic bonds that tie us together, will destroy our country,” he said at the time.

The report is a clear rebuke of the “1619 Project,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning report by the New York Times published in 2019. It argues the true founding of America was not in 1776 as the new nation declared its independence from Britain, but in 1619 when the first enslaved people were brought to the shores of the Virginia colonies. The Times’ report, led by reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, set off a firestorm among conservatives, especially as many educators embraced its overall message, and sought solutions for history lessons that often watered down or ignored parts of American history that grappled directly with oppression and subjugation of people on the basis of race.

Now this pack of BS will be taught to the children of South Carolina (of course it will start there)…..

Republican state legislators in South Carolina on Wednesday introduced a bill that would require public school students to receive conservative historical education consistent with the “principles and concepts” of former President Donald Trump’s 1776 Commission Report, a move that ignores the widespread rebuke of historians and progressive activists that accompanied its initial release.

S. 534, the Restore America’s Foundation Act, would mandate at least 30 hours of “instruction in United States foundational history” for the state’s public middle and high school students, WCSC reports.

“We have, in today’s society, a lot of disrespect for the flag, the national anthem, and that sort of thing,” the bill’s sponsor, State Sen. Dwight Loftis—a Greenville Republican—told WCSC. “The knowledge of where we came from and why our forefathers did what they did, I think it’s important that we know.”

However, critics note that Trump’s 1776 Commission—an 18-member panel that had no historians—whitewashes slavery and asserts universities are pushing anti-Americanism by exploring the nation’s roots of oppression, cruelty, exploitation, and greed.

When will we face the truth about our history?

So You Hate The Green New Deal

There is lots of push back on the idea of the Green New Deal….from destroying the oil industry to socialism to well you probably have your on opinion….mine is that it is beyond time for this type of legislation.

I could quote you all sorts of facts and stats on why it is needed or all the good it could do….but instead of boring you tom death with stats how about some real life examples of the good…..

An Arkansas school district finds funds to give teachers a pay raise…..

Our hero is Michael Hester, who some years ago became the superintendent of the Batesville School district in Independence County, Arkansas. He faced the problem that his district was underfunded and the teacher pay was in the bottom quarter for the state. Teachers kept resigning because they could not live on the pay. The American custom of supporting local schools mainly with local taxes means that poor communities have poor schools, which is not right.

…

Since 2018, Hester’s project has saved the school $1 million in utilities costs.

What comes next is the kicker. Hester used the savings on his district’s utility bills to give the teachers bonuses, ranging from $3,000 to as much as $15,000 a year.

He says he no longer has the problem of teachers resigning because of poor pay, and applications to teach in his district have risen.

But not to worry….this may never get past the Senate…..don not blame the GOP totally….if blame needs assigning then I would do so for Manchin a Democrat….

President Joe Biden campaigned on a climate policy plan that included, as its backbone, a clean electricity standard (CES) that would push the US electricity sector to net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. Given how important electricity is in cleaning up other sectors of the economy, the CES is arguably Biden’s single most important climate policy promise.

Figuring out whether he will be able to make good on that promise necessarily involves an inquiry into the beliefs, motivations, and intentions of one man: West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin.

Manchin is the hinge. He is the Senate Democrats’ 50th vote, the signal that other caucus “moderates” follow. Every Democratic legislative effort will, in the end, rely on his support. There’s no way around it.

The Tale Of Dr. Seuss

Dr, Seuss is making news in more ways than we could have imagined…..

There are lessons in life that the Dr. teaches….

In 1984, Dr. Seuss won an award for his contribution to children’s literature.

In his years as a cartoonist and children’s writer, Theodor Seuss Geisel created some of the world’s most famous books and illustrations, including Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Cat, and The Lorax.

As lifehackers, we can learn a lot from the legendary Dr. Seuss. He was, after all, one of the pioneers of clever storytelling that didn’t insult the intelligence of children. For example, consider How the Grinch Stole Christmas!—an early criticism of commercialization—from 1957.

We can study Dr. Seuss’s successful children’s books to become more productive, feel more motivated, and live a rich life. But the “Father of Children’s Books” also has plenty to teach us about the importance of reading, believing in yourself, and doing the work.

Let’s look at some things Dr. Seuss used to say, and see what we can learn from each one of them.

Lots of positivity there…..but then there is the flip side of it, the negativity…..

Tuesday is the 117th birthday of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, but the celebration this year comes with controversy. The business that controls the Seuss name says six books will no longer be published or sold because they portray people “in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” reports the AP. Two well-known titles are in the mix, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and If I Ran the Zoo, along with McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer. Details:

  • Background: In recent years, Seuss books have come under criticism for their portrayal of non-white characters. A 2019 study, for example, found that Seuss books have 45 human characters of color—out of more than 2,240 human characters in total—and 43 “of them have Orientalist depictions and two align with the theme of anti-Blackness,” per USA Today. The AP notes related criticism over Geisel’s depiction of Black, Asian, and other characters in his earlier advertising and World War II propaganda illustrations.
  • Anger: At Fox News, Liz Peek wonders in an op-ed whether the new backlash against Seuss will be a “tipping point” in the culture wars. “Cancel culture has become so mindless and all-encompassing that the average American will soon say…Enough!” she writes. “Dr. Seuss could bring us to that point.” Sen. Ted Cruz even wrote some Seuss-like verse about all this, as noted by Twitchy.
  • Biden shift: March 2 is “Read Across America Day,” which is traditionally associated with Seuss. President Biden’s proclamation for the day left out Seuss’ name, a pivot from presidents Obama and Trump. And the NEA also has been shifting its focus on the day from Seuss to emphasize diverse children’s titles.
  • One district: Last month, Virginia’s Loudon County school district courted controversy when headlines suggested it was banning all Seuss books, notes CNN. But the district says is it not banning them, only de-emphasizing them. “Research in recent years has revealed strong racial undertones in many books written/illustrated by Dr. Seuss,” explains the district in a statement.
  • More on the study: The 2019 study noted that in If I Ran the Zoo, for example, the “three (and only three) Asian characters who are not wearing conical hats are carrying a White male on their heads.” The latter “is not only on top of, and being carried by, these Asian characters, but he is also holding a gun, illustrating dominance. The text beneath the Asian characters describes them as ‘helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant’ from ‘countries no one can spell.'”
  • Rationale: In explaining its decision to stop publishing the six new books, Dr. Seuss Enterprises says it “listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalog of titles.”

I am not a big fan of censorship….I mean my mother never told me what I could read or not….so I do not think any government has that right.

The decision should be made by parents….not government.

Then there is the GOP….who never misses a chance to want money from some silly cause….

Republicans aren’t happy about the “cancellation” of certain Dr. Seuss books over racist imagery—and they’re using the issue to raise money. “‘Cancel Culture is TOXIC!’ / Patriots proudly declare,” reads a rhyme on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s fundraising page. “‘Free Speech must be defended.’ / Dems retort: ‘Too bad! Don’t care!’ / If you’re tired of nonsense: / Join us. Take a stand. / Condemn the Far Left for / Their radical plan. / We won’t be able to speak or think freely, / By the time the Dems are through. / Chip in $25 now and / We’ll send ‘Cat in the Hat’ right to you.” As Axios points out, The Cat in the Hat is not actually one of the six books that Dr. Seuss Enterprises will no longer be publishing. This is just the latest example of the right using “cancel culture” as a rallying cry, Axios notes.

Other examples of fundraising calls issued by the NRCC recently include, “The Liberal mob wants to cancel the Fourth of July” and “The Radical Left wants to cancel Christmas for good.” Meanwhile, as the books’ cancellation drove demand for them way up, eBay announced Thursday it was sweeping its marketplace to delist all copies for sale, the Wall Street Journal reports. Other major retailers, including Barnes & Noble, had also pulled the books, though third-party sellers were still offering them on Amazon (for extravagant prices). One seller whose listing was pulled tells the Journal she was told by eBay that the bok violated its “offensive material policy.” Libraries oppose censorship, and the director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tells CNN it will be up to individual libraries to decide whether to pull the books. Two big ones have so far announced the books will stay on shelves, CBS News reports: New York and Denver.

As usual the GOP will take a faux issue and try and drive the dialog to help avoid the fact they have NO principles left…all they have is fake issues that do NOTHING to move this forward or to “make it great again” (to use another worthless slogan)

Biden And Community College

Most of us know of the extreme debt that a college education will put an individual into that will take decades to clear that debt.

Newly elected president Biden has a plan that will make a community college free for the two years.

Jill Biden is pushing free access to community college and training programs, saying the schools will be an important part of Biden administration efforts to rebuild the economy.

A longtime community college professor and advocate, the first lady said people struggling to get by during the coronavirus-induced economic slump need access to these schools.

“We have to get this done. And we have to do it now. That’s why we’re going to make sure that everyone has access to free community college and training programs,” Jill Biden said in taped remarks broadcast Tuesday during a virtual legislative summit hosted by the Association of Community College Trustees and the American Association of Community Colleges.

What does this mean?

Biden’s higher education platform on his campaign website refers to community colleges more than 30 times. 

In it, he champions making two years of community college tuition-free through a federal-state partnership in which the federal government chips in 75% of the cost. 

That includes free tuition for part-time students, adult learners and recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, groups that frequent community colleges but are often left out of state free college programs. A report by the Education Trust found that 14 of the 23 existing free college programs exclude non-traditional students, like older adults and returning students, who did not enroll in college immediately after high school. DACA students can only participate in about half of free college programs.

“Finances continue to be a barrier for our students to access and succeed in colleges, so [community college leaders] are excited about the prospect of basically getting what amounts to greater support for students in the form of reduced tuitions,” says David Baime, senior vice president of government relations and policy analysis at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

I have been writing about this for years…..but my plan would give four years free under certain circumstances.

A Trump Presidential Library

First of all what is a presidential library?

Presidential Libraries are archives and museums, bringing together the documents and artifacts of a President and his administration and presenting them to the public for study and discussion without regard for political considerations or affiliations. Presidential Libraries and Museums, like their holdings, belong to the American people.

Many Presidential papers and records had been lost, destroyed, sold for profit, or ruined by poor storage conditions. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought a better alternative.

Congress legislated this policy, passing the Presidential Libraries Act in 1955. Through archives, museums, and public programs, Presidential Libraries continue to preserve the documents and artifacts of our Presidents, helping us learn about our nation and our democracy.

In short it is a storage vessel for all the presidential papers and awards and such…..and full owned by the people of the US through the National Archives.

Now that you know what these are the next question will be will Trump build a library?

Since most of his “actions” were Executive Orders so that he could pull an end run on Congress….maybe he will just paper a wall or two with the orders….since he signed few actual laws passed by Congress the library will be a very small place like the man that held the office of president in the last four years.

Then most of his policies were in Tweets then another room with his Tweets reproduced on a wall….

These places are for research and education….so what will be in a Trump library?

Since presidents worry about their legacy…..the library becomes one way to influence and control that legacy.

Presidential libraries are perfect examples of just how far presidents will go to control their own legacies. Since the first one was created in 1941, what were intended to be serious research centers have grown into flashy, partisan temples touting huckster history. Built with undisclosed, unlimited donations, often to sitting presidents, libraries have traditionally been donated to the government after their construction. But even though they are taxpayer-funded and controlled by a federal agency, the private foundations established by former presidents to build the libraries retain outsize influence. The libraries’ whitewashed exhibits are created by presidential boosters; they host political events; their boards are stacked with loyalists; and many of their important historical records may never see the light of day.

The federal government spends about $100 million a year operating, maintaining and improving presidential libraries. But the costs to build and equip them—which have doubled for each successive president in the past 30 years and now run in excess of $500 million—must come from non-federal sources. That’s not a sum one can raise through $25 internet donations; presidential libraries are funded by mega-donors.

Trump does have mega-donors…..but will they come to the rescue of a Trump Library?

Sadly I cannot think of much that will go into a library to preserve Trump’s legacy….if it helps whitewash his legacy then the library would be one or two rooms at most…..or a broom closet with a laptop on a small table.

There has an opinion piece that basically states that there will be NO Trump presidential library….

Every president since FDR has had a presidential library, and Barack Obama is currently working on his version of one to continue the tradition. What about Donald Trump? The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Trump likes the idea of raising $2 billion from his grass-roots supporters and opening one in Florida. But in a lengthy piece at Politico, Anthony Clark—author of a book on presidential libraries—assesses the chances and concludes that a Trump library probably won’t happen. No, it’s not because Trump famously doesn’t spend time reading books—”presidential libraries aren’t that kind of library,” notes Clark—or because of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. It’s because the process is way more expensive and complicated than you might think, and the particulars don’t seem well suited to Trump.

“If he does build a library, it’s likely Trump would want the legitimacy and imprimatur of the federal government, as a ‘seal of approval’ for his story, told his way,” writes Clark. For that to happen, Trump would have to raise the money, buy the land, have it built, raise hundreds of millions more for maintenance—”and give it, almost unthinkably, to the government.” Trump also could opt to go his own way, outside the National Archives system, as Obama is attempting to do. But the upkeep gets expensive in perpetuity, as the Richard Nixon library (which started independent, then joined the rest) found out. Clark floats the idea that Trump might take a more “Trumpian” route: He could license his name to “a for-profit enterprise—maybe a casino, or a golf course, or a ticketed museum with an attached hotel—to operate as a tourist attraction for the MAGAs and the (morbidly) curious.” (Read the full story

Civis 101–US Constitution

These days I seems to me that the American people need to get a better knowledge of our government and no better place to start the US Constitution.

I have found that there is a serious lack of knowledge on the workings of our government….many like to reference the Constitution of the United States when trying to make their point….but usually are ill informed about the document.

This series will attempt to reintroduce the reader to Civics and the working of government……I shall begin with the US Constitution…..the document that started this republic on the road we travel.

Too many people spend time using the Constitution without having the foggiest idea what the document contains.
 
If you want to use the Constitution to make your point then maybe  knowledge of the document is called for.
 
And that knowledge should include the amendments to the Constitution….the Bill of Rights…..
 
The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. It spells out Americans’ rights in relation to their government. It guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual—like freedom of speech, press, and religion. It sets rules for due process of law and reserves all powers not delegated to the Federal Government to the people or the States. And it specifies that “the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”

Biden On Education

Our president-elect has made so many statements it is hard to write about them all…..so let me do one about a subject that is extremely important to most Americans…their kids education.

Joe Biden pledged Tuesday to bring the coronavirus pandemic under enough control to open most of the nation’s schools during his first 100 days as president—going much further on the issue than he has in the past, even while warning that the US is facing a “dark winter.” The president-elect said that promise is dependent on Congress providing sufficient funding to protect returning students, teachers, and campus staff, the AP reports. He made the promise during an event in Delaware to introduce a team of health experts set to help the new administration combat a virus that has already killed more than 285,000 Americans. The first coronavirus vaccine, from drugmaker Pfizer, is expected to be endorsed by a panel of FDA advisers as soon as this week, with delivery of 100 million doses—enough for 50 million Americans—expected in coming months.

Biden said he’d call for all Americans to wear masks for 100 days and would distribute at least 100 million vaccines during his first 100 days in the White House, in addition to seeking to reopen most of the nation’s schools over the same period. He said officials will prioritize getting vaccines to educators “as soon as possible” after health care personnel and people in long-term care facilities have gotten them. Biden’s comments won praise from the nation’s two major teachers unions. “All I can say is hallelujah,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “We finally have a president-elect who understands that we need resources and strong public health measures in order to reopen school buildings.”

Waiting for more plans for the making of education by the new president…..you know stuff like…… teachers pay…..student debt….renovation of schools….etc.

The one big policy that could make him the ‘hero’ is to do something like forgive student debt….

There is an easy option available to President-elect Joe Biden to ease the economic suffering of Americans on the first day he takes office, and that is to cancel outstanding federal government student loans. Senator Elizabeth Warren made the case during a recent Senate Banking Committee hearing, saying that, “All on his own, President-elect Biden will have the ability to administratively cancel billions of dollars in student loan debt using the authority that Congress has already given to the Secretary of Education.” She added, “This is the single most effective economic stimulus that is available through executive action.”

She’s right. About 45 million Americans have a whopping $1.6 trillion of student loan debts, and a significant number have made no progress in paying them off. After home mortgages, student loans are the second most common debt in the United States. There is no mystery as to why this is the case. While the cost of higher education has risen, wages have simply not kept up, and debt has slowly ballooned. The burden of debt repayment has held people back from buying homes, moving out of their parents’ homes, having children, pursuing further education, starting businesses, and more. In other words, it has dragged down lives and the economy.

Why Biden Should Forgive Billions in Student Debt

Now that could show that Biden is a true progressive and not the gutless Centrist I believe he is.

But this would go against the corporations that own him and his staff.
