Given climate change acceleration, the killing off of our biodiversity, bees and other pollinators dying off, lack of drinking water, mass movement of populations, falling birthrate worldwide, and genocidal wars continuing unchecked, I really do believe that there will be hardly anone left on Earth in another 250 years. Those that remain will likely either be billionaires in bunkers, or ragged people existing in some kind of dystopian nightmare. So predictions about our somewhat glorious technological future seem rather pointless to me.

I cannot agree more, Pete. I would like to think humans are more resourceful than this, but greed is an enormous incentive. For far too long, humans have taken their “ruling” position to extremes and I fully believe it’s going to catch up with them in the not-too-distant future.

I agree with Tina, Pete, and Nan. That article is egregiously optimistic. This is what I wrote three years ago:
“Eight years ago, I published an analysis of agricultural forecasts by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with specific emphasis on how it might impact the world’s human population (see: A statistical projection of Population Decline in the 21st Century due to Climate Change). The results indicated that global food production could begin to decrease as soon as 2030, and that human population growth could begin to reverse sometime after 2050. Now, those dire projections seem much more likely than they did in 2015.
I see climate change in this 21st century as a 4-stage progression in increments of 25 years. The first quarter of the century, which I’ve titled “Awakening,” is currently coming to a close. In it, the general populace gradually transitions from careless disregard and denial to a reluctant admission that the climate is changing for the worse and that our future is not looking good. During the second stage, titled “Consensus,” worsening food and freshwater scarcity will exacerbate the escalating extreme weather problems and finally force government and industry to take serious remedial action. Those actions will unfortunately come too late to avoid the third stage, but maybe it will be sufficient to prevent the calamitous fourth stage. I’ve titled stage 3 as “Reckoning” in which humankind will probably experience catastrophic setbacks such as widespread malnourishment and starvation, regional wars over freshwater supplies and habitable land, massive migration, rampant disease and contagion, the deterioration of democratic civil society, and the rise of brutal authoritarian regimes. In stage 4 “Survival,” if it happens, we’ll witness the collapse of modern civilization and the bifurcation of humankind into two distinct populations: 1) the richest and most powerful lucky few will retreat to secluded enclaves (perhaps even underground sanctuaries) intending to escape the cataclysm and to preserve our technological culture as best they can, and 2) the unlucky poor and underprivileged who will struggle to survive amidst a devastated environment which even our hunter-gatherer ancestors would find inhospitable.”
