It is time for this thing to end!
The attack by Russia on the nation of Ukraine has been one of the big stories of 2022…..all the destruction, deaths and humanitarian crisis are all parts of any war….but the question is…how long will this conflict continue….or will it ever end?
My thought is the answer to the last question is….it will only end when the profits dwindle……so the short answer is…no time soon.
But let’s say there is a consensus on ending this conflict…..how will it play out?
Given the devastating effects of this war, first in Ukraine but also, through sanctions, on the world economy and the risks of famine that they entail, it seems obvious that the first task of any diplomat and political leader should be to end this war.
The problem is that there are at least two ways of considering how this will end and they are irreconcilable.
The first, which until recently was the view of the U.S. government, which is the view of the Ukrainian government, European Greens, and the majority of our media, is that the Russian invasion is illegitimate, unprovoked, and must simply be repelled: Ukraine must regain all of its territory, including Crimea (which has been attached to Russia since 2014).
The other, supported by individuals as different as Chomsky, the Pope, Lula in Brazil, and Kissinger, is that a negotiated solution is inevitable, which in practice means Ukraine giving up territories such as Crimea and Donbass and presumably other regions, as well as agreeing to the neutrality of that country.
The supporters of the first solution shower those of the second with insults: Putin-lovers, pro-Russians, supporters of appeasement in the face of Russian fascism etc. But we can ask at least two questions about this first solution: is it fair? And is it realistic?
How To End the War in Ukraine?
Zelensky has stated that there will never be an exchange of territory……even thought he has signaled a possible compromise in the past……
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country was willing to “compromise” over the country’s Donbas region. A core Russian demand has been that Ukraine gives up its territorial claim to the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. However, Zelensky then appeared to contradict himself saying he would prioritize the “territorial integrity” of Ukraine.
….and the US will not push for a settlement to this situation….
John Kirby, the National Security Council’s coordinator for strategic communications, said Sunday that the US will not push Ukraine to reach a negotiated settlement with Russia even if the Biden administration thinks it’s the right thing to do.
Kirby, who recently joined the NSC after serving as the Pentagon’s spokesman, said that the US will continue to support Ukraine in its war and that it’s up to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky if and when to pursue negotiations with Moscow.
“[Zelensky] gets to determine how victory is decided and when and on what terms. And [what] we’re going to do is continue to make sure that can succeed on the battlefield so that he can succeed at the table. But even President Zelensky will tell you that the time is not now for those discussions,” Kirby said in an interview with Fox News.

Throwing money at Ukraine does nothing to end this….
The US keeps pushing this war to continue until they see fit to call it over.
All this just illustrates the power and control the M-IC has over world events.
I Read, I Write, You Know
“lego ergo scribo”
Crimea and Odessa seem to be the sticking points. Putin wants them to permanently be part of Russia, Zelensky needs sea ports for exports. I think he would give up the Donbass to stop the war. After all, he was already fighting separatists there before Russia invaded.
Best wishes, Pete.
Zelensky will continue the fight as long as we foot the bill….but he needs to think about the people and their suffering…..chuq
The conflict in Ukraine will end the very day that it is completely “Liberated” and Putinski begins his “Special Military Operation” in one of the other countries that were once part of the Russian Empire… Latvia, Estonia, or one of those.
The war will end when the US runs out of money……Zelensky is making a killing why stop now? chuq
How can Zelensky be making a killing when the whole place is being incinerated inch by inch ?
The same way money was sent to Iraq on pallets to think this is about democracy is just plain ignorant. chuq
John, you are 100% on target. Thinking that Putin’s expansion stops at Ukraine is quite ignorant and plain silly. Ukraine is but a small segment of Putin’s Big Plan. i.e., the annexation of all of Eastern Europe and the Finlandaztion of all of Western Europe is the goal. Stopping the war in Ukraine is relatively insignificant. The geographical expansion of a Russian Empire is the culmination of Putin’s efforts. What I don’t think he understands though is that it wouldn’t be much of an empire after he’s incinerated every square inch of the continent.
Why thank you, Carl. I appreciate your comment very much. I also added you to my blog roll.
Only silliness is to think that Ukraine is in US national interest….it is not….Europe should be leading this effort if they truly are worried about Putin. chuq
I don’t see Ukraine giving up. Even if they are militarily conquered, things will turn to guerilla warfare. Russia has left a mark in countries like Ukraine, and they want no part of Russia in their lives anymore. Millions perished in Stalin’s famines, but most people forget that.
And millions are homeless…..there will come a time when that will be a factor. Be well chuq
This is a question I am asking myself. In Canada, finding affordable housing has become impossible. The pension we receive from the government is approximately $19,000 (Can). How can anyone live on so tiny an income?
