Closing Thought–21Mar19

Another moment in history when Americans can be proud (that is sarcasm)…….

The United States says it was one of three countries to vote against a U.N. resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism over freedom of speech issues and concerns that Russia was using it to carry out political attacks against its neighbors.

The resolution entitled “Combating glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance,” was approved by the U.N.’s human rights committee on Friday with 131 in favor, 3 against with 48 abstentions.

Ukraine and Palau were the other no votes.

This is a sickening moment for me……I am ashamed of this country’s leaders that would allow this vote…..

  1. Not too sure I totally agree with you on this one, old buddy. First off, that link is from 2016… before Trump. Second, my personal feeling is that in spite of all the current controversy of racism of all kinds, and Nazism in particular, we should likely not be pushing for resolutions, bills, laws, amendments.. whatever, anywhere, because I see this as a free speech issue. Likely the same or similar reason the U.S. at the time voted against the resolution. Of course I abhor all things racist and Nazi… I’m old enough to understand all that. But whether someone decides to be convinced by such demonstrative behavior and rhetoric or not should be a matter of the heart and an individual’s freedom to interpret as they wish. It’s similar to respect for our flag. There are no laws to enforce respect.. which is why disrespect of it pisses Americans off so much. But it is freedom of speech. Carrying Tiki torches is freedom of speech.. killing someone is a crime.
The greater issue is that what part of the American demographic is falling for this crap. I tend to think it’s a slack of our educational system in some ways.. racism, Nazism, not being taught and discussed in much detail. History and geography among American students is appallingly deficient. This is a normal process of history.. it tends to fade with importance as time goes on in future generations.
If Russian and Kim’s hackers are using fascism to induce divisive hate in America on the Internet… I hope that doesn’t affect freedom of speech.

    1. Our educational system is truly slack….most are taught from outdated books or books that have a warped text…..they want the students to learn some religious lesson instead of some moral issue and no they are not the same thing…..chuq
