Today is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme during World War One…..

The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was one of the largest battles of the First World War. Fought between July 1 and November 1, 1916 near the Somme River in France, it was also one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day alone, the British suffered more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the campaign the Allies and Central Powers would lose more than 1.5 million men.

  1. I will agree to acknowledge the day, in mourning, for I cannot so much glorify the dead killed during that time, as honor their passing, even though it was a pathetic waste of human potential. Another blogging friend, who is British, also posted a memorial today, with a poem she wrote, and this excerpt from a BBC program, that is quite poignant…

      1. Aye… according to one of the comments, she wrote the first stanza at age 9 or 10, for school, then finished the rest in 2012, at age 59…. pretty cool…
