Yesterday the voters in my state have proven their total lack of rational thought…..but it is getting better?
In the past I have been a staunch critic of the politics and the politicians of the state of Mississippi….I always say look at what the elected officials have given the voters of the state….if there is a “worst” list…we are on top and if there is a “best” list we are on or near the bottom….does that sound like the voter has been diligent in the research into their candidates?
For instance, the voter falls for the promise of tax cuts every time and the promise of jobs and then they struggle like Hell to find a job that pays a little better than minimum wage….they fall for the promise of education and then allow the elected ones cut the system to the bone and then wonder why the state’s education sucks……they vote for emotional issues that do NOTHING to bring Mississippi out of the 19th century……God, Guns and Abortion……
Either the voters are the laziness in the country or they are the most ignorant……But wait!
Mississippi voters Tuesday rejected a controversial amendment that would have defined life as beginning at conception.
The Mississippi amendment would have made it impossible to get an abortion in the state and hampered the ability to get the morning-after pill or birth control pills that destroy fertilized eggs. Disposing of unused fertilized eggs could also have become illegal, making in vitro fertilization treatments more difficult.
That vote was amazing…the voter showed some actual knowledge of the issue this time…..But wait!
While the abortion ballot initiative in Mississippi got the most attention, another constitutional amendment that CNN projects to pass will require voters to submit a government-issued photo ID. Mississippi will be the 15th state to require photo IDs to vote. Such laws have become popular with Republicans, who say they are trying to reduce voter fraud. Democrats argue that Republicans are trying to suppress voter turnout, especially among people who tend to vote for Democrats.
Now this one did NOT surprise me at all….Repubs will do whatever they must to try and keep Dem leaning voters from the polls……and in Mississippi that means African-American voters……and now that the state’s legislature will gain more Repubs….I look for other issues similar to this to start appearing……
The workers in the state do NOT have to worry about any Repub attacks on their rights….for you see….workers have very few rights to begin with…..
So are the stereotypes right? Regrettably they are are……the voter did show that they can do some independent thinking…..but NOT too much at any one time……
Odd, you acknowledge the stereotype in your title — and then plunge straightaway into another one in your text. I happen to agree with the results of both outcomes. Am I incapable of “rational thought”? Barely capable of “independent thinking”? Couldn’t I suggest the same about Democratic opposition to the very simple proposition that voting should be accompanied with basic identification? Do you really doubt the prevalence of voter fraud when the current system makes it so easy? Is simply producing a valid ID when you vote really a “racist” requirement? Isn’t that itself a bit condescending about people of color? And couldn’t a “rational” person perhaps conclude that all this ginned-up opposition to simply showing ID when you vote is designed to preserve something a bit nefarious about the current system?
Lobotero, I get your core concern with conservative Mississippi politics, but it’s unfair to use these election results as somehow illustrative of “irrationalism” — much less conclusive about any “stereotype” of… what? How “ignorant” Southerners are? Is that your point? Because Southerners are used to that tired trope. And it’s a stereotype itself that you might consider retiring.
Morning Kendrick…sorry but I stand by it….in 2010 the local congressman Gene Taylor was beaten by a Repub simply because he was a Dem….his voting record was almost perfect for a conserv candidate…but the voters went with the the attacks on him because he was a Dem and Pelosi was the speaker…they voted against their best interests….you can check out his record on middleclass.org I believe……
I wish I could explain it better….but you would have to be here and observe…..I am NOT saying that the whole state is racist only that some in power still hold to those beliefs……voter fraud is a ginned up issue….there was less than 1% recorded (pls do not hold me to that number I am working from memory right now)……
I wish I could retire it…I am feeling better about the voter with the defeat of 26…but that is where it ceases and now that the gov, house and senate are dominated by Repubs I will be watching and reporting……we will see 26 again and like I said…there is no need to worry about attacks on workers rights for there is very few of them in the state…..
Your take on the rejection of the anti-abortion measure is interesting. I’ve been following this story for the past few days, and I too was surprised that the measure was voted down. I’m a liberal in New Jersey, so the fact that the measure was even introduced in the first place was startling to me. I agree with you about the voting ID thing, and am worried about this blatant Republican tactic to keep Democratic voter turnout down. Nice article. I enjoyed reading it. =)
Hello starrygirl and welcome to the site,,,,,like I told Kendrick….I was surprised and we will see some version of this again now that the gov, house and senate are controlled by Repubs….Thanx for the good words and please stop by often it is a pleasure to talk with you…..

Do you really doubt that there are aliens out in space? Because you’ll find as much anecdotal “proof” of alien space travelers as you will “voter fraud.”
The demographics of the voters are well known, as are their preferences. Yes, the Rushpubliscum “voter fraud” hysteria is designed to re-introduce Jim Crow and get those un-UHMUHRICUN librul voters off the rolls. Any argument otherwise is intellectually dishonest, as the proof is with me on this one. Proof. Facts. NOT fantasy scenarios dreamed up by wingers.
Hi Jolly…I agree……In my area there has been one that I know of…..I believe it is a smoke screen….and now that the state government is controlled by Repubs….there will be more.
Stereotypes are usually always correct or they wouldn’t be stereotypes. When they bringing back slavery in Mississippi?
Hansi, most workers are wage slaves already……wages just plain suck! Thanx to right to work BS.
It was a win for the white conservative voters on the immigration bill but a slap in the face for the fundamentalist christian efforts aimed at abortion.
Breaking even for Mississippi is an improvement, no? 🙂
Yes, it is a small victory….but it was women that found that they were really being crapped on that made the difference…like I say…we have NOT seen the last of this amendment…..I will be writing on the state legislature starting in January……it is gonna to be another Ohio or Wisconsin or well pick a red state…..Kansas comes to mind…
