Professor’s Classroom

It is another Monday–Blue Monday–mercifully the Olympics are over and now for the Def Jam of politics, the Democrat Convention.  Oh yeah…how about that…time for the quiz and you thought I had forgotten…no way…no chance…

During the early days of this republic there was a time when politics was called a dynasty, what years and what was the dynasty called and why?  And how were the players in that dynasty?

Not bad for a Monday…..enjoy and good luck.

What To Look For In Denver

Obama has cast himself as the agent of change and has promised much, but ask yourself if he can truly deliver on what he has said.

These promises are:

1–withdrawal of troops from Iraq

2–to reduce the inequality between the classes

3–Universal healthcare–this will not be a priority in the Obama campaign.

4–a green environmental policy

5–End torture and abuse of civil liberties–but voted for FISA

6–commitment to woman’s rights

7–a more humane immigration policy

8–improving conditions is the urban communities

9–Reform drug laws

10-reform political system

Now you have the major points of the Obama camp.

The Democratic convention itself—a carefully scripted and corporate-funded media extravaganza—is to be the culmination of a systematic shift to the right by the Obama campaign.

In this election, once again, the vast majority of the American people who oppose the war in Iraq and the global escalation of American militarism are to be politically disenfranchised.

The political trajectory of the Obama campaign and the preparations for the reactionary media spectacle to be staged in Denver underscore the impossibility of carrying out any struggle against war, political reaction and the destruction of the living standards and basic rights outside of the independent political mobilization of the working class.

JUst remember you heard it first from the mouth of the Professor.

New York Earthquake Terror

No this is not a SciFi Channel movie of the week.

— An analysis of recent earthquake activity around New York City has found that many small faults that were believed to be inactive could contribute to a major, disastrous earthquake.

The study also finds that a line of seismic activity comes within two miles of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, about 25 miles north of New York City. Another fault line near the plant was already known, so the findings suggest Indian Point is at an intersection of faults.

The study’s authors, who work at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Observatory, acknowledge that the biggest earthquakes — in the 6 or 7 magnitude range — are rare in the New York City region. They say a quake of magnitude 7 probably comes about every 3,400 years.

The study, published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, analyzed 383 known earthquakes over the past 330 years in or near New York City. The biggest were three that reached magnitude 5 in 1737, 1783 and 1884.

Data on earthquakes since the early 1970s, when Lamont deployed dozens of new detectors, enabled the authors to see patterns from smaller quakes, including the magnitude 4.1 quake that was centered on Ardsley, in Westchester County, in 1985.

The report inferred from the data that there is a seismic zone, previously undetected, running west from the southwest tip of Connecticut and intersecting with the large, well-known Ramapo fault near Indian Point.

Scammed as Guilty As Scammers

How many emails do you get from Nigeria telling you about the fantastic opportunity for you to make millions?  If you bite on the hook, check on this.

People who fall for so-called “Nigerian scams” aren’t victims at all—in fact, they’re greedy and should be jailed, according to Nigerian high commissioner Sunday Olu Agbi. He said today that Nigeria has gained a bad reputation because of the scams perpetrated by a minuscule number of people, and that those who find themselves involved with the scams are equally as guilty as those running them.

“The Nigerian Government frowns very seriously on these scams… and every day tries to track down those who are involved,” Olu Agbi told the Sydney Morning Herald in response to a previous article on Australians falling for Nigerian scams. “People who send their money are as guilty as those who are asking them to send the money.”

Out of the 140 million people in Nigeria, Olu Agbi said that fewer than 0.1 percent were involved in Nigerian scams. The scams, also referred to as 419 scams or advance-fee fraud, predate the Internet, but have exploded in recent years thanks to the proliferation of e-mail and instant money transfers. Although the scams can take on many forms—from payments for products sold on eBay or Craigslist, to deposits on houses and purchases of plane tickets for “true love” on the other side of the ocean—they all follow the same general theme.

Scammers send huge checks to unsuspecting victims with some story attached to explain the overpayment, and the victim is expected to wire back the difference immediately. Eventually when the checks are deposited, they bounce and the victim is out a lot of money. Sometimes, victims are tricked into thinking they’ll eventually be paid back and continue to participate in this endless cycle of sending money, especially if the scammer is wooing them romantically (which happens more commonly than one might think, to both men and women).

Although this kind of fraud originates from all over the world, it seems to have an unusually high concentration in Africa and, specifically, Nigeria. This has, unsurprisingly, cast Nigeria in a negative light. Olu Agbi said that Nigeria’s reputation for being involved with the scams has even hurt the country’s ability to land business deals. “[T]hose who want to transact business with us are always very suspicious,” he told the newspaper.

Still, Olu Agbi’s “blame the victim” mentality won’t help Nigeria win any friends, but education on how to spot 419 scams and avoid falling for them can certainly go a long way in curbing their growth. After all, once victims stop blindly forking over cash, scammers will have to figure out some other way to make money.

Greed is a powerful motivator.
