Could “Family Values” Help Gay Marriage?

This subject has nothing but dynamite attached to it…..but the party of “family values” is losing its hold on the term.  Repub after Repub is caught in the act of marital infidelity, so how can they keep spouting the crap they spout?

Attorney Evan Wolfson has made some very compelling observations:

Wolfson doesn’t believe the central issue is Sanford’s infidelity. “It’s his abuse of power, his hypocrisy and his dereliction of public duty.” He paints all the “family values” politicians who commit marital infidelities with the same brush.

“They are all self-proclaimed moral crusaders who demonize and discriminate against some of their constituents because they’re gay and then turn around and flout the so-called morality that they invoked against gay people,” he said. “To me, the really unpardonable part is not their personal failings; it’s their political and policy choices that turn out to be so hypocritical and destructive.”

So, then, why do social conservatives insist on linking marriage and religion when same-sex marriage advocates are not asking that religious institutions must marry lesbians and gays, Wolfson says there are really two different groups at play:

He believes that there are some among the opposition who are truly “theocratic” and would like to impose on others their biblically derived laws in defiance of the U.S. Constitution. But others use religion as an excuse because they are still uncomfortable with gay people and conflicted about the freedom to marry.

How, then can marriage equality advocates use the “family values” politicians committing marital indiscretions to their advantage? “I think that their hypocrisy speaks for itself and helps move the case for legalization forward,” Wolson said. “Because many of them have been the bomb-throwing leaders of the anti-gay campaign, every time one of them is taken out it allows for the fair-minded to think anew and move in the right direction.”

Advocates aren’t just sitting by watching the conservative hypocrites self-destruct. They are reaching out to those who are religious and remain on the fence about supporting same-sex marriage.

I really hate to be a buzz kill….but the religious right will not get off the marriage thing…no matter how many of their “flock” stray.

2009 Anal-Ocity

Just when you thought the RNC was gonna be silent for awhile and would spend their time trying to retool the party before the 2010 elections.  NO….just wishful thinking.

The AP reported that Michael Steele, chairman of the RNC, recently tied same sex marriage to small business by using health care.

Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.

“Now all of a sudden I’ve got someone who wasn’t a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for,” Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. “So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money.”

Does this also apply to “traditional” marriage also?  Does that mean that if I marry Betty Lou that it will be a drag on the business?  What crap!  The employee pays for the right to have his/her spouse on the company policy.

When will Repubs finally see that this guy is an idiot and they need to find someone who can lead the party into the future.

When Marie Osmond Speaks……

Will the LDS church be listening?  Marie Osmond talks openly about her daughter, her faith and gay marriage.  Her 21 year old daughter is openly gay.

And her comments do seem to suggest she supports what the LDS Church does not.  “I believe everyone should have the right to share homes and finances with somebody that they care about. You know, on those types of things, I am very supportive. When it comes to marriage, you know, I think civil rights need to be for all.”

“Everybody has a right to believe what they believe. But I do think everyone has a right to have civil rights.”

Marie seems to go against her brother, Donny, as well as the LDS Church, but she shows courage and a sense of reality.  She has grown out of that “Donny & Marie” days and has become a woman with a mind and courage.  Kudos…Marie!

Maine Joins The Expanding List

Maine became the fifth state to authorize same-sex marriages, the second to do so with legislation, and the fourth to do so in New England.

Of the six states in the region, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont already recognize gay marriage, and the two that don’t—New Hampshire and Rhode Island—are moving rapidly in that direction. New Hampshire is expected to authorize same-sex marriage before the end of the month.

Maine’s Democratic Gov. John Baldacci signed the bill into law despite previously stating his opposition to gay marriage. In a statement, he explained his change of heart: “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”

The New England action comes on the heels of Tuesday’s historic vote by the District of Columbia City Council to recognize gay marriages performed in other states—seen by many as the first step toward legalizing same-sex marriage in the nation’s capital. Once the bill is signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty, as expected, it will go before Congress, which has 30 days to review the bill. If Congress doesn’t act within 30 days, the bill becomes law automatically.

But all is not well.

Maine officials say gay marriage opponents are challenging a new law allowing same-sex couples to wed.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said Thursday that opponents filed a challenge under the state’s “people’s veto” provision.

It allows for a referendum to overturn laws if opponents can collect enough signatures.

In other news from the Northeast on same sex marrigae–The New Hampshire legislature has passed a same sex marriage bill.   If New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signs the bill or lets it become law without his signature, his state would become the sixth overall to allow gay marriage and the fifth in New England.
