Is This Truly A Good Idea?

I understand the right to bear arms…..even if I do not agree with it whole- heartedly….I still see the rights of people to do so…..but there comes a time when some limitations have to be considered…it is like that example of freedom of speech which does not give one the right to yell FIRE in a crowded area……but I digress….recently several states have passed new laws, laws that make me shutter….

Tennessee is one of four states, along with Arizona, Georgia and Virginia, that recently enacted laws explicitly allowing loaded guns in bars. (Eighteen other states allow weapons in restaurants that serve alcohol.) The new measures in Tennessee and the three other states come after two landmark Supreme Court rulings that citizens have an individual right — not just in connection with a well-regulated militia — to keep a loaded handgun for home defense.

Experts say these laws represent the latest wave in the country’s gun debate, as the gun lobby seeks, state by state, to expand the realm of guns in everyday life.  (From a piece written by Malcolm Gay of the NY Times)

And I still ask….is this truly a good idea?  I spent many years working in the bar business and I have seen incidents of a spill beer degenerate to a fight that had to be stopped before someone did serious bodily damage to another…..and now guns are allowed in bars……what part of this is rational?

Are we so afraid of the world outside of our doors that we must carry weapons to protect ourselves from those meanies waited around every corner?  May I say that if you are the afraid of life, then become a hermit…lock yourself in your abode and stay safe….and if you must carry a gun to feel like a man then you have lost that battle a long time ago…..

The GUN does NOT make you a man,,,,but rather a pathetic piece of protoplasm…..

Gun Rights And The “S” Word

From time to time protesters take to the streets to remind everyone of there God given right to “keep and bare arms” and  yesterday was NO exception to the rule…..as reported by CNN:

They’re angry at the government and are demonstrating in the Washington area against what they see as the trampling of the Constitution. Their specific fear: Americans’ right to bear arms under the Second Amendment will be taken away.”We’re in a war. The other side knows they are at war, because they started it,” said Larry Pratt, president of the Gun Owners of America. “They are coming for our freedom, for our money, for our kids, for our property. They are coming for everything because they are a bunch of socialists.”

There is that “S” word again!  All the hyperbole is nothing but emotional hysteria.  I try to shrug off all the lame socialist rhetoric as coming from the mouths of morons….but sometimes stuff has to be addressed……..

For one thing…Obama signed a bill that allows guns to be carried in National Parks and one of the protests was in a Virginia National Park…up until the signing of the bill guns were prohibited…plus these people are secured by the government to be able to tote their guns , you know the thing the Constitution says you can do…….so thanks to the guy that is a socialist these people were allowed to parade around with their nuts in a holster…….When has Obama even hinted at the possibility he would reach for more gun control?  See!  Stupid!

The Brady Group for gun control gives Obama and his admin an “F” on gun control…..do not hurt yourself, that means he gets a failing grade on gun control……See!….Stupid!

We keep hearing about “they” will take our freedoms….which ones would that be?  Apparently the government is NOT taking their freedom to be an idiot away from them…..Just once I want one of these babbling morons to say what liberty or freedom I will lose…….(pause here for thought)….never mind they would give themselves a migraine try to come up with an answer……..emotional, hysterical horsesh*t is all they have…….but then again these are the people who watch Dog the bounty hunter, the UFC and wrestling….need I say more?

The South Still Amazes

I live in the South and I have written many times about the lunacy that seems to invade the mental process in this section of the country.  recently a friend and reader sent me an email about a story that she thought was totally bizarre.

Paul McCrory won’t go deer hunting until November, but Louisiana’s new ‘‘sales tax holiday’’ on hunting equipment makes this weekend his best opportunity to shop for bullets and a new rifle.

Gun shop owners report customers like McCrory are enthusiastically planning to stock up on bullets, shells, shotguns, rifles and handguns — all of which will be sold without the 6 percent state sales tax or local sales taxes Friday through Sunday. That means a 9-percent tax break for Baton Rouge shoppers, several of whom said they planned to take full advantage.

The tax break is a natural fit for the state known as ‘‘Sportsman’s Paradise,’’ and debuts at the same time dove hunting season starts. The inspiration for the ‘‘Annual Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Tax Holiday’’ came from South Carolina, the first and only other state with such a law. South Carolina introduced its tax holiday over two days last year and is scheduled to lift taxes again in November on guns and bullets.

As was true in South Carolina, the Louisiana proposal faced little opposition in the Legislature, where many members campaigned as pro-firearm and want to avoid angering the National Rifle Association and other gun lobbies.

But Louisiana’s tax break goes much farther than South Carolina’s: Sales taxes are waived on any item that could be used for hunting or fishing, including clothes, shoes and bags. Also included: off-road vehicles, airboats, flat-bottomed boats called pirogues, animal feed, firearm and archery accessories, range finders, binoculars, knives, decoys, duck blinds, chairs, ear plugs, holsters, belts and slingshots.

While some states are giving a tax holiday on school clothes and supplies or on hurricane prep supplies…..Louisiana has decided that the best place for a tax break is in the buying of guns.  Just like most of the Southern states…all tax benefits are for those who need them the least….a total ignoring of the poor and unemployed…..they refuse to live in reality that tax reveue is the way states pay their bills….but they continue to have budgetary problems because of the stupidity of their elected officials.

The South has shown to be still living in the early 20 th century…..dislike of a black pres……anger at health reform even though most of those angered are dependent on the government for their present health care.


Have Gun–Will Travel

Just like the 60’s western, some people travel with their gun to make a point…

I have heard all the news and debate about the guy who was outside the Hew Hampshire townhall….that he was on private property…..that he left before the pres arrived…..that he is a libertarian…….that he was exercising his 2nd amendment right (that I am still working on).  He was also holding a sign that said the tree of liberty needs watering….with a don’t tread on me snake adorning it.  I also heard the argument that he should have never been allowed to a tense situation with a gun.

No matter what the opinion of my reader is about the gun issue there is something that has been left out of the debate.  In an article written by Robert Anglen for the Arizona Republic, there is more to this guy and the story:

William Kostric, 36, formerly of Scottsdale, stood outside the New Hampshire meeting on health care with a gun holstered at his thigh and holding a sign proclaiming that “it is time to water the tree of liberty.” State law permitted Kostric to openly carry a licensed handgun.

The quote, often referenced by those in separatist and militia movements, refers to Thomas Jefferson’s famous call for vigilance: “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tyrants and patriots.”

Web sites indicate that Kostric is a “team member” of the Arizona chapter of We the People Foundation, which has a stated goal of “returning America to its founding principles.”

On its Web site, We the People’s founder Robert Schulz says, “Our recent initiatives have focused largely on questioning the federal government’s abuse of its Constitutional powers to incur debt, tax labor, create currency by fiat, conduct war and police the peace.”

The group maintains that it is not concerned with politics or personalities in office. But Schulz supports the so-called birther movement, which promotes the idea that Obama wasn’t really born in the United States and shouldn’t be president. We the People joined a lawsuit that unsuccessfully challenged Obama’s presidency based on the citizenship claim.

So as usual, there is always more to the story than the beltway pundits want to include into the conversation.  This guy may have attacked in a civil and peaceful way, but how will the next gun nut act or recat to the situation?  It has been reported the Obama gets between 20-30 death threats a day….who is to say if the next wingnut will not act on a threat?

New Twist To The Gun Debate

For decades the debate has been heated on both sides of the gun issue….should we control guns…should we not control guns……but now there is a bit of a new twist added to that debate.

Recently a story by the AP’s Suzane Gamboa sheds some new light on the issue.

Members of Congress may be alarmed by the surge in Mexican drug violence and its potential to spill across the border, but they grow silent when the talk turns to gun control as a solution.

Mexico’s drug violence has killed more than 9,000 people since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006 as gangs battle each other for territory and fight off a government crackdown.

Underscoring the Obama administration’s concern over the violence and the potential for a large-scale spillover into the United States, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to Mexico on Wednesday to show support for its crackdown on drug cartels.

Mexico has long tried to get the United States to curtail the number of guns — many purchased legally — that wind up south of the border, where gun laws are much stricter. The State Department says firearms obtained in the U.S. account for an estimated 95 percent of Mexico’s drug-related killings.

For his part, Obama has signaled a willingness to tighten restrictions on guns, calling the flow of drug money and guns “a two-way situation.” Yet 65 Democrats said in a letter to Holder that they would oppose any attempt by the administration to revive a ban on military-style weapons.

Congress did provide $45 million this year for Project Gunrunner, a federal program aimed at curbing the flow of guns. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, a Texas Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said he will seek another $30 million over two years for the program and $30 million more to fund efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to crack down on gun trafficking.

Oh my God, I can see the letters now–they, whoever they are, will turn this into something it is not.  And this post will most likely generate interest.  I am not coming down on one side or the other, but I can see why this issue is being raised.

Gun Nuts Rejoice!

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia rests much of the 5-4 majority opinion of the court in D.C. v Heller on the alleged right to have the right to one’s defense of one’s self defense. Supposedly, if one has a gun, one can protect oneself against attackers, intruders and all sorts of evil-doers.

We were struck by two factors–how borderline illiterate so many of the gun-nut bloggers are (not just on this issue, but others as well) and how many expressed macho boasts, such as “you’ll have to pry my gun from my dead, cold hands,” aping the John Wayne-type post of the late National Rifle Association figurehead, Charlton Heston.
If anyone were ever in favor of gun control, knowing such people are out there with guns in their hands is justification enough.
But since our mantra is to be informed, we checked out to the best we could what is known about the success of gun possession in fending off various criminals.
The evidence is sparse, and what there is of that is old, but it puts the lie to the claim that personal possession of a gun is an effective defense.

Although one would presume that a person who uses a gun successfully to repel an intruder or an attacker would then report the incident to the police, if for no other reason than to seek to put the perpetrator in jail.
A cursory search turned up no research, not even U.S. Justice Department tracts based on voluminous federal, state and local crime reports, that compares the claims of self-defense with police reports of such claims.

Another chant of gun nuts is that if guns are taken away from them, only criminals will have guns. Federal statistics show that 340,000 crimes each year involve the theft of firearms, two-thirds of them during household burglaries. It appears it is legitimate gun owners who are supplying the criminals with guns.
