Germany Steps into The Past

Recently Germany held it selections and there is a trend in Europe for Far Right parties to gain support and Germany was no different.

Conservative and right-wing parties emerged on top. The mainstream conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), along with its partner, the Christian Social Union (CSU), finished first with 28.6 percent of the vote, while the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) surged into second with 20.8 percent, according to provisional results announced by election authorities.

Germany voters made a change at the top on Sunday, delivering a victory to centrist conservatives in the parliamentary elections and giving the far right its best result since World War II. Friedrich Merz, who’s now in position to become the nation’s chancellor, declared victory minutes after the first projection based on exit polls was released, Politico Europe reports. “We must now quickly regain our ability to act so that we can do the right thing at home, so that we are once again present in Europe,” Merz said, “so that the world can see that Germany is being governed reliably again.” Chancellor Olaf Scholz denounced the support for Alternative for Germany, and President Trump celebrated the election results.

Exit polls—which have been historically accurate in Germany—had Merz’s Union bloc running at about 29% and Alternative for Germany around 20%, which is double the anti-immigrant party’s showing in 2021. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats polled about 16%, per the AP, and the Green Party 13.5%. Scholz conceded Sunday, telling supporters “this is a bitter election result.” And he decried the fact that “an extreme right-wing party like the AfD is getting such election results. That must never be something that we will accept. I will not accept it and never will.” On social media, Trump proclaimed it a “great day for Germany.”

Merz’s Christian Democrats will need to partner with at least one party to form a governing coalition. He could end up partnering with small parties, per the New York Times.
Merz had said he’d refuse to work with AfD, as had Scholz and other party leaders. Parts of the AfD’s organization are considered extremist by German intelligence agencies. The party’s second-place finish will shake the continent, at least, per Politico; Germany is the most powerful nation in Europe. Despite Merz’s position, Alice Weidel, the AfD’s candidate for chancellor whose supporters include Elon Musk, said she would consider forming a coalition with the winning party. “We will hound the others to make sensible policies for our country,” she said.

Merz has to build a coalition to govern and that may not be as easy as it sounds.

Reuters reports that Merz will face “complex and lengthy coalition negotiations” to form a government. His bloc took around 29% of the vote. AfD doubled its share of the vote, coming second with around 20.5%, but other parties generally refuse to work with AfD as part of a longstanding “firewall” against the far right, meaning Merz may have to govern as part of a three-party coalition. The center-left Social Democratic Party is considered the most likely coalition partner, CNBC reports.

Is the past bleeding into Germany’s future?

This sounds very familiar to anyone that has a grasp on history.

He is not a big fan of Trump and he is worried about the future of NATO….

Later this year, a NATO summit will be held — but he suggested Europe may need to devise a new defense structure to replace it.

“I am very curious to see how we are heading toward the NATO summit at the end of June,” he said. “Whether we will still be talking about NATO in its current form or whether we will have to establish an independent European defense capability much more quickly.”

Alternate History–Trump-Style

Over the years Donny has made some amazing claims about the history of things….but one of his most semi-intelligent comment came when talking about Ukraine/Russia conflict.

President Trump on Tuesday appeared to blame Ukraine for starting its war with Russia, despite the fact that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s anger that Ukraine was not invited to Tuesday’s US-Russia talks, and his assertion that Ukraine won’t agree to any peace deal it wasn’t a part of negotiating, Trump said, per CNN:

  • “I think I have the power to end this war, and I think it’s going well. But today I heard, ‘Oh well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you been there for three years. You should’ve ended it after three years. You should’ve never started it. You could’ve made a deal.”

Trump also falsely claimed Zelensky has just a 4% approval rating, Axios reports. As for the supposed “deal” Ukraine could have made, Trump said, per the BBC, that it “would have given them almost all of the land, everything, almost all of the land—and no people would have (been) killed, and no city would have been demolished.” He said Russia wants “to stop the savage barbarianism.” As for whether Ukraine is an equal member of peace negotiations, he wouldn’t answer the question directly, the Hill reports, but only said, “Their people are being killed, and I think they have to make peace. I said that was not a good war to go into, and I think they have to make peace. That’s what I think.”

He might have a better grip on the world around us if he less time eating Big Mac and laying in bed.

But do I know?

I see US and Russia could normalize ties soon….Little Marco working his special brand of international relations….

Following a high-level meeting between US and Russian officials, the State Department said Washington and Moscow will begin taking steps to normalize the diplomatic relationship between the two superpowers. US-Russian diplomacy sank during the first Donald Trump administration, and Joe Biden cut nearly all contact with Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff met with a Russian delegation led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. During a press conference after the meeting, Rubio said the parties agreed on four points.

“First is that we are going to work – we’re going to point our teams’ respectively to work very quickly to reestablish the functionality of our respective missions in Washington and in Moscow.” He continued,  “For us to be able to continue to move down this road, we need to have diplomatic facilities that are operating and functioning normally.”

Some stupid never changes.

And now the Us has sided with Russia at the UN on the Ukraine situation.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned Russia for the war in Ukraine on Monday, though the US joined Moscow in voting against the measure, reports the Washington Post. Others in the “no” camp included North Korea and Belarus. The final vote on the resolution put forth by Ukraine—which calls for all occupied territory to be returned—was 93-18, with 65 abstentions.

Maybe there is something to the rumors going around the news sites.

They Are Coming For Medicare

As promised a look at the Medicare situation taking shape in DC.

This post is for retirees and those close in on retirement…..

A benefit that many of us old farts depend on is soon to be under the knife…The Trump admin and the wretched GOP are looking at the program for cuts….

Beltway journalists reported Thursday on “confusion” spreading throughout the White House and the Republican caucus following U.S. President Donald Trump’s endorsement of a House plan that would slash Medicaid and comments from the administration that suggested Trump will not protect Medicare—but Democratic lawmakers and progressive advocates said the message was crystal clear.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk want to cut taxes for billionaires like themselves—and pay for it by gutting Medicare and Medicaid,” Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party, said in a statement. “They don’t care if families have to take on crushing debt to pay for care, as long as it makes them much, much richer.”

Mitchell offered the translation of contradictory statements from Trump that came Wednesday, with the president expressing support for a House resolution aimed at imposing his border and energy policies and extending his 2017 tax cuts that primarily benefited the wealthy.

The House resolution “implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it,” the president said, suggesting his opposition to a Senate proposal that would push for two separate bills.

Calling for $2 trillion in spending cuts in order to fill the $4.5 trillion hole the tax cuts would blow in the deficit, the proposal would include potential cuts of $880 billion to Medicaid, which have made some Republicans in Congress express doubt that they could support the package without angering millions of constituents who rely on the low-income healthcare program.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-on-medicaid

And after some lame campaign promise to guard the benefit….they LIED!

Howard Lutnick, Trump’s billionaire buddy turned commerce secretary, has confirmed that the administration was simply lying to MAGA supporters about not touching Social Security and Medicare.

“Back in October … I flew down to Texas, got Elon Musk to [set up DOGE], and here was our agreement: that Elon was gonna cut a trillion dollars of waste fraud and abuse,” Lutnick told Jesse Waters of Fox News Wednesday night. “We have almost $4 trillion of entitlements, and no one’s ever looked at it before. You know Social Security is wrong, you know Medicaid and Medicare are wrong. So he’s gonna cut a trillion and we’re gonna get rid of all these tax scams that hammer against America and we’re gonna raise a trillion dollars of revenue.”

Just last week, President Trump promised that “Social Security won’t be touched, other than if there’s fraud or something. It’s going to be strengthened. Medicare, Medicaid—none of that stuff is going to be touched.”

Fast forward a week, and he endorsed House Republicans’ budget plan, which is expected to make an $880 billion cut to Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the rich.

This is a long cry from the party that was telling its voters—many of whom are elderly conservatives on government benefits—that they wouldn’t lay a finger on the programs they need most.

You were warned numerous times during the campaign and yet 40-50% of you voted for this….how stupid do you feel now?

Hatred makes one stupid and stupidity has found a home here in America.

And when one is stupid then Project 2025 can be used with full support.

I reiterate….You Were Warned!

Speaking of Medicare I start my next round of treatment today, 5 days a week for 6 weeks, I do not know how it will effect me or my writing…..hopefully I will continue my ‘crusade’.

Never Get Your Hopes Up

Recently it was reported that the SecDef has ordered a look into cutting, a major cut, of Pentagon spending.

I think it is a great idea but as I wrote when the news broke….I do not believe there will be much cutting going on….

And now for the rest of the story….

Acting Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert G. Salesses said in a statement on Wednesday night that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered a review of Pentagon spending to realign spending to fund priorities of the Trump administration.

The statement from Salesses came after a report from The Washington Post said that Hegseth ordered a plan to cut Pentagon spending by 8% each year over the next five years. But according to the statement from Salesses, the idea is to redirect spending and not actually make cuts to the budget.

“Secretary Hegseth has directed a review to identify offsets from the Biden Administration’s FY26 budget that could be realigned from low-impact and low-priority Biden-legacy programs to align with President Trump’s America First priorities for our national defense,” Salesses said.

“The Department will develop a list of potential offsets that could be used to fund these priorities, as well as to refocus the Department on its core mission of deterring and winning wars. The offsets are targeted at 8% of the Biden Administration’s FY26 budget, totaling around $50 billion, which will then be spent on programs aligned with President Trump’s priorities,” he added.

On Thursday, Hegseth said that the Trump administration would be taking $50 billion away from “woke Biden-era non-lethal programs and instead spend that money on President Trump’s America First, peace through strength priorities.”

Hegseth criticized The Washington Post for reporting on misrepresenting his memo, which he said was “clear as a bell.” The Pentagon chief said he wanted the “biggest, most badass military on the planet.”

In his statement, Salesses said that through the Trump administration’s budget, the Pentagon “will once again resource warfighting and cease unnecessary spending that set our military back under the previous administration, including through so-called “climate change” and other woke programs, as well as excessive bureaucracy.”

Salesses said spending priorities from the Trump administration include the “Iron Dome for America,” referring to an order from the president to establish a major new missile defense system, a project that would be a boon for the weapons makers and likely start a new arms race. Trump has also backed a budget plan drawn up by House Republicans that would increase military spending by $100 billion.

More info here….According toBreaking Defense, the memo issued by Hegseth included 17 categories of spending that would be exempt from the offsets:

As I seem to always warn….never get your hopes up for the billionaires will always win out.

Better luck next time reining in War spending.

On a side note….the price tag for trump’s golf outings for one month….$10.7 million….so while his thugs and hatchet men are destroying the government he has time to play golf….we are so goddamn lucky (sarcasm)….

Apparently Trump and golf is his version of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

Any thoughts?

Eggs: Our Favorite Bitch!

A lovely Sunday here in the Deep South….nice temps and semi-clear skies…today I write about a subject that effects most of us almost daily.

That would be the price of eggs….it seems we cannot go one day without some news news flash on the prices and availability…..and then a usual FYI….

I remember during the 2024 campaigns the GOP made hay about the high prices of groceries under the Biden administration and the promise that something would be done if the GOP were given the chance to help their fellow Americans.

As usual it was all lies but that is their MO….lie their asses off then turn their back on any promises made….(and you people still vote for these half human assholes)….but let’s get back to it os Biden’s fault thing….

During the previous American presidential campaign cycle, much was made (by voters and politicians alike) about the high increase in grocery prices under the Biden administration, especially egg prices. In the last two months of former President Joe Biden’s presidency alone, egg prices rose 14% alone, according to CNN.  Further, Donald Trump campaigned on bringing down grocery prices “starting on day one.”

Instead of that happening, though, Forbes reported that inflation was higher than expected in January 2025 (in which President Trump was in office for nearly two weeks) at 3% rather than 2.8% and that egg prices increased again by a staggering 15%. Trump, perhaps unsurprisingly, responded to these numbers by posting “BIDEN INFLATION UP” on his own social media platform, Truth Social.

The egg price crisis seems to be far more indebted to the virulent avian flu that is infecting America (and killed over 40 million egg-laying birds in 2024).

Regarding Leavitt’s accusations of the Biden administration “mass killing” 100 million chickens — it was actually the USDA, which required the destruction of whole flocks of chickens to stop the avian flu once it was detected, leading to the deaths of 130 million birds since 2022. However, this USDA policy has not changed during the Trump administration and the same culling that Leavitt decried in her statement against Biden continues with President Trump.

As a result of the avian flu rendering over 130 million egg-laying birds as no longer viable, egg prices have soared astronomically.  Further, until biosecurity increases and a vaccine is introduced to entire commercial egg-producing flocks, it is likely that the avian flu crisis (and its resultant increased prices) will continue.

Did you know that at today’s prices gram for gram eggs are more expensive the beef?

Every day seems to bring a new reminder that egg prices keep rising. The latest is from Axios, which reports that eggs are now more expensive than beef by one metric for the first time. The outlet analyzed nearly 500 months of Consumer Price Index data going back to 1984 and found that January brought a milestone—the cost per gram of protein for a dozen eggs eclipsed that of a pound of ground beef for the first time. The eggs are now running about a half cent more expensive.

Consumers shouldn’t expect relief anytime soon. The average price of a dozen Grade A eggs in US cities reached a record-high $4.95 in January, more than double the price of $2.04 not even two years ago, reports the AP. And the Department of Agriculture has warned that prices are likely to rise another 20% this year. What’s more, prices typically spike around Easter, which is April 20 this year.

There are those that are calling for an investigation into the high prices….but with this do-nothing group in charge it will be a fart in a hurricane.

An advocacy group dedicated to fighting corporate agriculture monopolies on Wednesday urged federal antitrust enforcers to take action against egg producers that the group accuses of taking advantage of the bird flu crisis in order to raise prices, inflate their profits, and consolidate their market power.

What’s more, the slow recovery of “flock size”—the total number of egg-laying hens—”despite historically high prices, further suggests coordinated efforts to restrict supply and sustain inflated prices” that warrants investigation, according to a letter sent by Farm Action president Angela Huffman to Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson and Acting Assistant Attorney General Omeed Assefi, who has been tapped to temporarily lead the DOJ antitrust division.

The letter, which invokes the behavior of “dominant egg producers,” largely provides data on one company, Cal-Maine Foods, the biggest producer and marketer of shell eggs in the country.

Separately, Democratic voices are urging the Trump administration to take action around corporate conduct as it relates to food prices. FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya, a Biden appointee, has also urged Ferguson to open an investigation into egg production and marketing practices—pointing to a 2023 request from Farm Action to the FTC to investigate potential antitrust violations in the egg industry.

Where are the Democrats?

All they are capable of doing is talking about the problem and offer NO solutions.

Hang on my friends it may get a lot worse.

While we await that other shoe to drop here is a little FYI for alt egg….

If you’re not among those panic-buying eggs, you can easily find suitable egg substitutes for baking, whether due to allergy concerns, scarcity or you’re simply priced out. Another silver lining: Most of the replacements are ingredients you probably already have on hand, and are likely more affordable than eggs.

Baking is a delicate web of ingredients — removing one would be like recklessly pulling out the lynchpin in a Jenga tower — and eggs are incredibly important for a number of reasons. An egg, in particular, has several roles that are crucial to a recipe’s success. It adds richness and moisture, like in a brioche. It can serve to thicken and emulsify, as in a cheesecake. The oven heats up the egg’s protein, creating structure for cakes, muffins and bars. When beaten, eggs provide leavening fluff — case in point: a soufflé. If you’ve ever forgotten to add eggs to a cake batter, then you know all too well the end result is a dense, structureless puck that crumbles faster than a house of cards. So if you don’t or can’t use egg, you definitely need a substitute.

IST Saturday News Dump–22Feb25

Another Saturday and another day of news that Walter Cronkite did not report….

Locally–More local shootings.  Weather went from the high of 72 to a high of 34 in two days….but that gave me another opportunity to make some chili.

Personal–I had a week off from treatments and doctors so Sue and I decided to take it easy and lounge around…..it has been glorious week.  Bad news is I start more radiation come Monday and 5 days a week for 6 weeks….the joy.

I have contacted WP about the IST glitch….their ‘Happiness Engineers’ were no help….I now await their solution (if they can find one)….thank you to everyone that is bearing with me through this damn ordeal…..hopefully this can be resolved soon but sadly I am not holding my breath….thanx for your understanding and patience…..

We start with food news as well as health news….do you eat yogurt?

A new study builds on evidence that yogurt, touted for its health benefits for millennia, may protect against certain colon cancers. The fermented food containing live bacteria “may be good for maintaining a good microbiome in our body,” Dr. Tomotaka Ugai, a senior author of the study, tells NPR. Researchers analyzed the diets of more than 100,000 female registered nurses and 51,000 male health professionals who were followed for 30 years or more, finding those who regularly ate at least two servings of yogurt per week had lower rates of proximal colorectal cancer positive for Bifidobacterium, “a bacterial species found in yogurt,” per a release.

Researchers believe long-term yogurt intake may alter microorganisms in the gut, including Bifidobacterium, a probiotic generally believed to prevent gastrointestinal disorders, resulting in a “protective effect.” Indeed, the study speaks of “the anti-tumor potential of yogurt.” “My message is, if you like yogurt, go for it,” Ugai of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School tells NPR. Study co-author Dr. Andrew T. Chan of Massachusetts General Hospital notes the research “provides an additional avenue” to investigate the role of diet and gut microbiome in the risk of colorectal cancer among young people, per USA Today.

I like mine with blackberries, honey and walnuts.

I do enjoy a glass of OJ in the mornings….will that change?

A story in Bloomberg Businessweek notes that breakfast staples such as eggs, butter, and even cottage cheese have rebounded after being out of favor with the public. Orange juice? Not so much. Consumption in the US is down by more than half since its peak in the late 1990s, and a slew of challenges stand in the way of a comeback.

  • Nutrition: Though it was once considered a must for health, more consumers have grown leery of the sugar at play. And not just added sugar: Nutritionists note that juicing oranges rather than eating them whole means the fruit’s fiber is no longer there to slow sugar consumption.
  • Prices: They’re climbing for both the bottles and frozen concentrate varieties. The latter, for example, averaged $4.24 a pound last year, up 30% from the previous year. Meanwhile, bottles of OJ are getting smaller as prices go up, up, up, per the Atlantic. Potential tariffs on Mexico (which fills gaps in US production) and Canada (a huge market for US exporters) won’t help.
  • Storms: Hurricanes Ian, Irma, and Milton have taken a huge toll on Florida’s citrus industry in recent years. After Milton slammed the state in October, for example, Tropicana supplier Alico said it was exiting the citrus business and converting its acreage into other use.
  • Disease: On top of a worsening climate, a disease called “citrus greening” is wiping out groves. From the Atlantic: “Around the world, millions of acres of orange trees have succumbed, and in the past 20 years, production in Florida’s storied orange groves, which once supplied the majority of America’s juice, has declined 92%.”
  • Fighting back: Brands such as Minute Maid and Tropicana are experimenting with new blends (adding apple or pear, for example) to bring down costs, and spending heavy on marketing. Whether it will be enough is another question. Yasmin Tayag puts it this way in the Atlantic: “As orange availability slides, the era of orange-juice ubiquity is rapidly coming to an end.”

Keeping with the food stuff….we all are bitching at the high cost of food these days but where do people pay the most for their food?

With inflation rising and increasing prices for products like eggs making headlines, it’s natural to want to cut your supermarket bill as much as possible. WalletHub used recent data from the US Census Bureau and Council for Community and Economic Research to assess the cost of a variety of grocery products—meat, milk, fruits and veggies, frozen food, etc.—in all 50 states, against the context of each state’s median monthly income. New Jersey turned up as the place where market visits sap the least percentage of residents’ income, while customers in Mississippi open their wallets the most (WalletHub notes that while groceries in Mississippi are relatively cheap, the median income in the state is the lowest in the nation). The highs and lows:

Where people spend the most

  1. Mississippi
  2. West Virginia
  3. Arkansas
  4. Kentucky
  5. Louisiana
  6. New Mexico
  7. Alabama
  8. South Carolina
  9. Tennessee
  10. Oklahoma

Where people spend the least

  1. Hawaii
  2. Colorado
  3. Virginia
  4. Minnesota
  5. Utah
  6. Connecticut
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Massachusetts
  9. Maryland
  10. New Jersey

See how other states ranked here.

I see my state is number 1 on the high side something else we can be proud of (sarcasm) plus we have the lowest monthly income another plus (sarcasm again).

A couple of new state laws that are now being proposed….we begin with Utah….

Utah state lawmakers are fighting to ban the display of Pride flags — but not Nazi or Confederate flags — in schools and on all government property.

Utah’s House Education Committee introduced a bill this week that bans Pride flags in all public schools and other government buildings, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. The bill passed committee — with the only two Democrats voting against it — and is now on its way to the House floor.

The bill allows for “a historic version of a flag…that is temporarily displayed for educational purposes,” which Republican lawmaker Trevor Lee says will include Nazi and Confederate flags, according to the Tribune.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/utah-pride-flag-ban-schools-government-property-b2698466.html

And my favorite is from the great state of Ohio….

A groundbreaking law has been proposed in Ohio that would make it a felony for men to ejaculate unless they intend to conceive a child. The legislation, introduced by Democratic House Representative Anita Somani, seeks to regulate male reproductive rights in the same way as women’s.

Abortion continues to be a contentious issue in America, particularly since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing each state to independently determine its abortion laws.

“You don’t get pregnant on your own,” stated Somani, adding, “If you’re going to penalize someone for an unwanted pregnancy, why not penalize the person who is also responsible for the pregnancy? ” The bill, known as the Conception Begins at Erection Act, would criminalize any man in the state who “discharges semen without the intent to fertilize.”

(themirror.com)

I hope there is more to this stupidity than the blurb I read.

Then there is a ‘creepy’ one from Missouri…..

Missouri Republicans are advancing an effort that would require pregnant people to register in a statewide database.

House Bill 807, called the “Save MO Babies Act,” is intended to target people “at risk for seeking abortion services” and to “reduce the number of preventable abortions.” If passed, the registry would start on July 1, 2026, and would be managed by the Maternal and Child Services division of the state’s Department of Social Services, according to the bill text. But the bill does not specify the scope and scale of such a registry, or exactly how “at risk” individuals would be identified.

https://newrepublic.com/post/191724/republicans-missouri-registry-pregnant-people-abortion

I seem to always find one that fits into the ‘Can’t Fix Stupid’ files….

A woman vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands lost both of her hands to a shark while trying to photograph it, reports the Telegraph. The woman, identified only as a 55-year-old from Canada, “attempted to engage with the animal” to take pictures while in shallow water on the beach on the island of Providenciales, according to a government statement and the New York Times. Authorities say the shark was about 6 feet long, though its species was not clear.

Every year there is a wealth of idiots that think wild animals are ‘cute’…..and a selfie is needed….

Finally one for the ‘holy crap’ files…..

Adrian Simancas was only in a whale’s mouth for around a second but it felt like much, much longer. On a kayaking trip with his father in the Strait of Magellan off southern Chile to celebrate his 23rd birthday, Simancas and his kayak were briefly swallowed by a surfacing humpback whale, People reports. He escaped unharmed. The incident last Saturday was captured on video from a camera attached to his father’s kayak. In the video, his father, just a few feet away, can be heard encouraging Simancas to stay calm, the AP reports.

Simancas was able to reach his father’s kayak and they made it back to shore. “I thought I was dead,” Simancas tells the AP. “I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me.” He tells the BBC that they had been kayaking for around two hours when he “felt something hit me from behind, closing in on me and sinking me.” “I managed to see a dark blue and white color. I felt a slimy texture, which touched my face,” he says. “At that moment, I closed my eyes expecting an impact, but I felt more like I was flipped over, not hit, and that’s when I lay down.”

He says in the brief moment he was in the whale’s mouth, he “thought about the possibility of surviving inside the whale like Pinocchio.” He says that after it spat him out and he rose to the surface, he realized that it wasn’t a predator, but was worried it could do the same thing to his father’s kayak, “whether out of curiosity or just to play.” He tells the BBC he has reflected on the experience and decided to appreciate it. “Not only to see how to get something positive out of something negative, but to see it in its entirety as what it is, which is a unique experience, an encounter with wildlife in a region at the end of the world.”

Now he has a tale for his grand kids.

That will do it for this Saturday….enjoy your day and weekend….and as always….Be Well and Be Safe….

Cracking Down On Social Security Fraud

By now almost everyone knows that Elmo and his band of thugs in DOGE are taking on ‘saving’ the taxpayers money by gutting government.

Recently they were given access to people’s Social Security information, confidential information, in an attempt to head off the millions of dead getting money.

Let’s look at all that imagined fraud.

The Trump administration is falsely claiming that tens of millions of dead people over 100 years old are receiving Social Security payments, the AP reports. Over the past few days, President Trump and Elon Musk have said on social media and in press briefings that people who are 100, 200, and even 300 years old are improperly getting benefits—a “HUGE problem,” Musk wrote. It is true that improper payments have been made, including some to dead people. But the numbers thrown out by Musk and the White House are overstated and misrepresent Social Security data.

  • What has the Trump administration said about payments to centenarians? On Tuesday, Trump said that “we have millions and millions of people over 100 years old” receiving Social Security benefits. He said Social Security would be “very powerful” if those people were removed from the system.
  • So are tens of millions of people over 100 years old receiving benefits? No. Part of the confusion comes from Social Security’s software system based on the COBOL programming language, which has a lack of date type. This means that some entries with missing or incomplete birthdates will default to a reference point of more than 150 years ago. Reports from the Social Security Administration’s inspector general state that the agency has not established a new system to properly annotate death information in its database, which included roughly 18.9 million Social Security numbers of people born in 1920 or earlier but were not marked as deceased. This does not mean, however, that these individuals were receiving benefits. A 2023 report states that “almost none of the numberholders discussed in the report currently receive SSA payments.” As of 2015, the agency automatically stops payments to people who are older than 115 years old.
  • How big of a problem is Social Security fraud? A 2024 report from Social Security’s inspector general states that from fiscal 2015 through 2022, the agency paid out almost $8.6 trillion in benefits, including $71.8 billion—or less than 1%—in improper payments, mostly overpayments to living people. In early January, the US Treasury clawed back more than $31 million in federal payments—not just Social Security payments—that improperly went to dead people, a recovery that former Treasury official David Lebryk said was “just the tip of the iceberg.” The Treasury estimated that it would recover $215 million over three years.

The fraud in the Social Security system is a typical lie of the GOP….a few years ago it was the welfare system that was the target and that turned out to be ma fucking lie but yet they keep telling it year after year and yet there are some Americans that repeat this lie every chance they get

DOGE is a massive scam….

Even if you believe that Musk is trying to root out waste and fraud (and you really shouldn’t), he and his dweeby hatchet bros are only making things more corrupt and expensive.

Even with information to contrary there are some that want to believe these thugs are doing the right thing….they are not.

But not to worry these parasites will be coming for Medicare soon.  (Post to follow)

Will US Become An Oligarchy?

I recently read an interesting article on the The Conversation site……before I go into that let me define oligarchy for those that are fuzzy on just what it is…..

The political term, oligarchy, comes to English from the Greek with its meaning intact — a form of government run by a small number of people such as wealthy landowners, royalty or powerful military figures. If you say that you can’t fight the oligarchy, you mean the leaders of such a place. Sometimes the word refers to the few powerful people in charge of a large company or system. A financial oligarchy might try to block reform.

Keep that definition in the back of your mind…….

Now for the article I referred to in the beginning…..

In his farewell address, outgoing US President Joe Biden warned “an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy”.

The comment suggests that, under Donald Trump’s second term as president, it will be billionaires rather than the people who shape public policy.

There is certainly some evidence Biden’s ominous caution should be taken seriously. The world’s richest man and the owner of X, Elon Musk, has been a vocal supporter of the Republican candidate. Other billionaire tech moguls to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago mansion after his 2024 election victory include Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Apple’s Tim Cook and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai.

There is nothing unusual about business leaders wanting the ear of an incoming president. What has concerned Biden and others is that so many of Trump’s influential backers also own media platforms and have the ability to sway public opinion.

Should these new tech titans be thought of as oligarchs?

So will the US become an oligarchy?

It cannot become something it has always been.

From the very onset of this country it has been the ‘oligarchs’ that formed and run and continues to run this nation.

No?

Think about the definition.

… a form of government run by a small number of people such as wealthy landowners, royalty or powerful military figures.

If you have any history still rattling around your brain then you will see this is true for the ‘leaders’ of this country were the very people that the definition tells us.

What do these oligarchs want?

Bernie answers that probing question.

We we are living in an extremely dangerous time. Future generations will look back at this moment – what we do right now – and remember whether we had the courage to defend our democracy against the growing threats of oligarchy and authoritarianism. They will remember whether we stood with President Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg who in 1863, looking out at a battlefield where thousands died in the struggle against slavery and stated that; “this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that a government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” Do we stand with Lincoln’s vision of America or do we allow this country to move to a government of the billionaires, by the billionaires and for the billionaires?

But it’s not just oligarchy that we should be concerned about, and the reality that the three richest people in America now own more wealth than the bottom half of our society – 170 million people. It’s not just that the gap between the very rich and everyone else is growing wider, and that we have more income and wealth inequality today than we’ve ever had.

It is also that we are looking at a rapid movement, under President Trump, toward authoritarianism. More and more power resting in fewer and fewer hands.

Right now, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, is attempting to dismantle major agencies of the federal government which are designed to protect the needs of working families and the disadvantaged. These agencies were created by the U.S. Congress and it is Congress’ responsibility to maintain them, reform them or end them. It is not Mr. Musk’s responsibility. What Mr. Musk is doing is patently illegal and unconstitutional – and must be stopped.

Two weeks ago, President Trump attempted to suspend all federal grants and loans – an outrageous and clearly unconstitutional act. As I hope every 6th grader in America knows, under the Constitution and our form of government the president can recommend legislation, he can support legislation, he can veto legislation, but he does not have the power to unilaterally terminate funding passed by Congress. It is Congress, the House and the Senate, who control the purse strings.

But it’s not just Congress that’s under attack. It’s our judiciary.
