We Don’t Want No Stinking Dictator

We can say a lot of things about the upcoming election…..for me it is a contest between Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dummer….on one side we have a person that spews hatred and bias and on the other we have a spineless tool that makes promises only to work on them just before an election….so for me this election is a lose-lose scenario.

Beyond my personal opinion a dictatorship looms and many Americans say they do not want such and all the while they are helping create the thing they do not want.

Whether a glass is half full or half empty is a matter of perspective. The same can be said about the half of Americans who oppose the idea of allowing presidents to rule unilaterally—an exercise of monarchical power favored by only a fifth of us. I like to look on the bright side, so I take it as a win that those opposing unrestrained executive power far outnumber those who favor it. Still, it would be better if, in a republic established two and a half centuries ago, more than half the population would commit to the proposition that turning the country into a dictatorship would be bad.

“About half of the public think it would be a bad idea if the next president is able to act on important policy issues without the approval of Congress or the courts,” the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reports of the results of a survey of 1,282 adults conducted March 21-25. “Only 21% think it would be a good thing, and about 30% think it’s neither good nor bad.”

In the poll, 48 percent overall oppose unilateral presidential rule, including 58 percent of Democrats and 45 percent of Republicans. The 21 percent favoring the idea include 17 percent of Democrats and 26 percent of Republicans. Support for unrestrained executive power rises to 39 percent among Democrats in the case of a Biden win in November, and to 57 percent of Republicans if Trump wins.

Interestingly, the AP-NORC results are nearly identical to those found by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics in 2021. At the time, pollsters reported “roughly 2 in 10 Trump and Biden voters strongly agree it would be better if a ‘President could take needed actions without being constrained by Congress or courts.'” Among Biden voters, 22 percent strongly agreed with the idea, compared to 19 percent of Trump voters (over 40 percent of both at least “somewhat agreed” with the idea of an unrestrained presidency).

Americans Don’t Want a Dictatorship, but They’re Creating One Anyway

Maybe it is time to take a hard look at your political priorities….the thing that you dislike the most may be the very thing you are helping create.

Just a lowly observation….

  1. In order to better understand what is happening today we have to take a close look at how The German People were complicit in allowing Hitler to come to power and create the horrors of the Third Reich. There is a similar playbook at work here heading toward the 2024 election:

The creation of the Third Reich (Nazi Germany) involved various factors, including the role of the German people. Here are some ways in which the German population contributed to the rise and establishment of the Third Reich:

    1. Political Support: A significant portion of the German population, especially in the wake of economic instability and social upheaval following World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, sought strong leadership and stability. The Nazi Party, under Adolf Hitler’s charismatic leadership, promised to restore Germany’s greatness and appealed to nationalistic sentiments.

That sounds a lot like “Make Germany Great Again.”

    2. Election Support: The Nazi Party gained electoral support through democratic means. In the early 1930s, amid the Great Depression, many Germans frustrated with the existing political establishment voted for the Nazis in elections. This allowed the Nazis to gradually gain power within the democratic framework.

Americans sick and tired of a broken government are looking for something new.

    3. Paramilitary Organizations: Groups like the Sturmabteilung (SA) and later the Schutzstaffel (SS) played a critical role in enforcing Nazi ideology and intimidating political opponents. Many Germans, disillusioned with the weakness of the Weimar Republic, were attracted to the image of discipline and strength projected by these paramilitary groups.

Today we have the proud boys and those others that you hear tell of.

    4. Propaganda and Indoctrination: The Nazi regime utilized propaganda effectively to manipulate public opinion and create a cult of personality around Hitler. This propaganda machine influenced many Germans, especially the youth, instilling Nazi ideology and racial theories.

The Radicals in Conservative circles are creating a definite personality cult around Trump, their idea of a strong man style of leader.

    5. Silent Compliance and Fear: Not all Germans actively supported the Nazis, but a significant number either passively accepted the regime’s policies or were too intimidated to resist. The Gestapo (secret police) and other state apparatuses instilled fear and silenced dissent.

We have yet to see the installation of a gestapo kind of organization in The United States but I am not so sure that one such as this is in the offing should the Right Wing candidate win the election in 2024 — There is some hint of the candidate seeking “Revenge and Retribution against political enemies as I recall.

    6. Economic Recovery: The regime’s success in stabilizing the economy and reducing unemployment through public works programs (albeit with a heavy focus on rearmament) gained Hitler popularity and consolidated support among segments of the population.

The so-called conservative candidate in 2024 brags about being the only person who can fix the American economy.

It’s important to note that not all Germans actively supported or agreed with the Nazi regime’s actions, and there were dissenters and resistance groups. However, the Third Reich’s establishment and longevity were significantly enabled by a combination of popular support, fear, propaganda, economic stability (initially), and the systematic elimination of opposition.

  2. The same people who don’t want a dictator are funding one and intending to vote for him. You cannot invent that level of stupidity, it has to be created in the womb.

    Best wishes, Pete.
