On my “walk about” from politics I am watching the Olympics….great stuff….The US is doing well but China has the edge in the medal count….but we will prevail when we get to our fortes……swimming, track & field and of course B/ball…….
While the country is watching overpaid millionaires play keep away with the rest of the field….American fencing team, especially the women, is doing well…..something that most Americans get two shits in Hell about, but the women are excellent and it is beauty in motion to watch…….but America’s hope for a medal in women’s fencing was lost to the woman from the Ukraine who won the Bronze…..
Then we have our women’s soccer which is by far the best in the whole sport…..they have won 3 or 3 group play games and are playing flawless, or as close as one can get to flawless soccer………
I am also impressed with the American women’s field hockey squad…their win over Argentina was a huge deal since Argentina is one of the top teams in the sport……but lost to the Aussie….they will have to tighten up if they want to go for the medal……
My fav sport is handball….not the game you played in your younger years by hitting a ball against a wall but rather it is like water polo without the water and a lot more contact……I cannot pull for the US…..because it seems they either do not have a team or did not qualify….I am pulling for Iceland. You would think that this game would be right up the USA alley with all the physical contact and all….but nope….I guess that there is not enough glory in it……..
Next is water polo….the American women’ team is doing well…..but it looks like they need to tighten up or they will be put out in the quarters…….
I wish I could say something positive about the equestrian events……but it is as boring as watching circumcised swimming and diving……..
Then there is Badminton….who would have thought that badminton would have controversy? 4 teams trying to lose to get a weaker opponent in the semis…..S. Korea, China and Indonesia…..that would be the women…the men are just as boring as usual……
Gymnastics……all I can say about it is……YAWN! But I will give the women’s team their props…..they have won the Gold……
An American woman competed for the Gold and won in Judo…Kayla Harrison
Shooting…..you would think that a country that is obsessed with guns that it would do much better in the shooting sports……so far we have only 2 and both in skeet….1 woman 1 man….maybe this coming week we can show the world that a country obsessed with gun ownership can do better……
All in all, I enjoy watching the athletes give their all in trying to be the best in their sport…..some try and lose and I feel for them and then you hear about the hardships some of them go through to get to the Olympics….like one soccer team practices on a field that is mowed once a month another has to practice in a parking lot after hours and those are the athletes that I would like to see get medals…..sometimes I feel like it is all about the star power than the sport……I hope that feeling is wrong……..but when you see an athlete win his/her sport knowing that they have unlimited access to training facilities and then one that has to practice after work in a parking lot……my heart goes out to the later…..NO matter what country they represent.
The thing is NBC bills the Olympics as “limited commercial interruptions”….that is true but only on the sports that they deem as important….like they would never think of cutting away from the millionaires that give dunking lessons but something like handball it is no problem…their coverage of “unimportant sports” SUCKS!
I’m getting my fill of esoteric sports too. Though the mini-ping pong was a trip.
I cannot think fast enough for ping-pong at that level……did you know there is medal for playing on a trampoline?
