We have had our day of gays and Palestinians….and the media will move on to something else….but NOT in the direction of this post…..
We are entering the doldrums of fall when the political landscape in Washington gets more boring and silly by the minute….for that reason……and now for something completely different (thanx Monty Python)…..
We all know that Europe is up to its ass in problems….Greece, Spain, Italy, et al……and the Euro, the currency of the EU is having its share of troubles also…..to the point that some have predicted that the Euro could be finished….and if that actually occurs can the EU be far behind? And if it does fail, what could be the consequences?
A collapse of Europe’s monetary union would likely lead to a breakup of the European Union as a whole, posing significant risks to the region and even raising the possibility of war in the long term, Poland’s Finance Minister told CNBC. “Therefore the danger in a longer-time horizon, in 10-20 years, in the absence of one of the key elements of our security system and one of the key elements of our political system, which ensures we deal with problems in this peaceful, democratic way we’ve developed, the risk of all sorts of authoritarian political movements, and therefore even war, in the long horizon, rises,” he said.
Is it possible? Dunno….but he makes a compelling case. Thoughts?
To be honest, if the EU did break up, I don’t see them going to war as most of them don’t have the stomach to do it. At worse, I think it would be cold relations. The way that the EU is becoming like the US government (corporate controlled), it would probably be for the best. 🙂
Terrant, the truth is the the German people feel like they are carrying the load for the EU and if the economic criosis gets even worse….I can see several of the countries trying to recoup their investment in any way that they can…..
Then maybe this war you are seeing will be fought with lawyers rather than soldiers.
Possible but I think not…….remember we live in a century of dwindling resources and top that with dire economic times……and another situation like 1939 could possibly arise…..
If Russia was one of the EU states then I would have to agree. If there is going to be war, it would be most likely involve them. The big question in my mind would it be with US, EU, or China.
Russia is building its own bloc, by uniting all the republics from the good old days…..and yes it will begin with trade wars and escalate from there…..
Lobotero,
The United States has too many bases over there. I’m not sure we would allow anything to happen, unless we chose sides, which in the long run may prove disastrous. Recall the Treaty of Versailles?
Ugh.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Terrance….with the push for defense spending cuts we could lose the bases in Europe…..the US could have its hands full with a major social problem…all this is just conjecture but something to consider….
It is entirely likely that Ukraine will enter a cusoms union with Russia and Belarus. Those were the core states of the USSR.
Russia is on the rise. While we are maybe 3 years away from a Soviet-style collapse. We will live in interesting times.
Jolly, I agree that Russia is on the rise and in 10 yrs, maybe less there will be a return to the Cold War footing and with China on the other side…..we will be pinched.
