A lot of people have used that term from the book “1984”….it has been used to categorize a lot of stuff the government is doing and how it could effect the people……the Patriot Act comes to mind….there has been a lot of things that have been predicted as Big Brother sticking his nose into ordinary people’s lives….and then there is France……
For members of the French administration, it is a law against digital crime. For civil rights activists and politicians from opposition parties, it is a plan for censorship that excites fear and loathing — and even conjures up the specter of Big Brother and the surveillance state.
The new legislation could in the future force Internet service providers (ISPs) to shut off access to criminal sites, should they be officially instructed to do so. According to the draft legislation, the law “makes it the responsibility of each Internet service provider to ensure that users don’t have access to unsuitable content.”
Now that brings in the question….who will decide what is “unsuitable content”? This is akin to someone decide which books I am allowed to read….my mother did not do it: government definitely does not have that right…..
I bring this to everyone’s attention because if it succeeds in France it will be coming to a country near you! Today the French, tomorrow YOU! Then BIG BROTHER will have his way and you will have your “security”……..While you were sleeping you have been losing your rights slowly but slowly…..Happy Now?
I know that France and eBay were not seeing eye to eye on the sale of certain WWII antiques. EBay does not let the antiques to be available in France and other European countries with similar laws. However, they are still available on the US site. My first though would be to force the ISP from access to the US site. Plus, they have that pesky problem with foreign words entering their language. I guess they figure if it works in China; it will work there.
Hi Terrant…..I am more concerned with the thing of censorship…..I do not want anyone telling me where I may go or what I can view….I cannot get on board with any type of censorship……
Keeping people from buying certain historical artifacts is censorship. Even if the item in question is unpopular by reasonable people.
I guess we could call it a form of censorship…..if the artifact is for personal consumption then I would have a probl;em with anyone owning the cultural legacy of a country or civilization……in this case I was thinking more along the lines of censorship of information…I had considered what you say…..an interesting thought……
The cultural legacy of a country is comprised of EVERYTHING within it including what is individually AND publicly owned. It is constantly changing anyway.
Censorship is ALWAYS misused and manipulated by those in power, or who wish to be in power, so it inevitable turns out to be bad. Free speech, like free everything else, is in the end not free at all unless it is TOTALLY free – like it or not.
It’s like in the UK where people like Amazon are forced by the media and government to prevent the sale of knives etc., because it is illegal to purchase knives that could be considered as weapons (yeah, I know – how stupid is that?). That is censorship! You don’t produce a better society by banning knives or guns, you produce a better society by eliminating the assholes who use them to kill, maim and rob decent people.
Oh God! You have done it yet again….made me start thinking of reasons for violence, especially within the boundaries of a culture…..maybe I should return to drinking heavily…..lol
If you moved here, we could make it a joint effort 😆
HA! Sounds like a good plan….we could yell at each other over a bottle of wine….LOL
What a perfect way to spend one’s days… 😆
I could not think of a better way…I am too old to chase women anymore…..well too slow…my age makes it that way…
Over here the women will probably chase you anyway (nice and gently too) 😉
Cool……I do get winded at times…..
They (the ruling elite) want to control every fucking thing. The French are just like every one else in that respect with one tiny exception – for some strange reason (and I don’t know what it is) the French government has ALWAYS during my lifetime (and befor?) been further divorced from the people than any other government I know of – and that’s saying something big indeed.
Perhaps the scariest thing is that the French government is one of the big driving forces behind the EU. What does their totalitarian attitude indicate about THAT dictatorial entity?
Sounds like France learned its lesson from the American experience when they had their revolution……
Maybe – like all revolutions, it was a complete waste of time because all they ALWAYS achieve is to replace one set of assholes with a different set – one tyranny with another.
I agree and I almost always point to the French revolution……terror that was thrusted onto the French people was far more hideous than the king…..
