We are bombarded daily but this poll or that poll….the Prez popularity is falling or rising or ………More people are conserv…the country is going in the wrong direction….are a few of the polls that the media is SO addicted to these days…a minute by minute look at how Americans view Washington and its players……these figures are used to drive the political debate or drive the story of the day….but how accurate are these figures?

Yeah, it’s expensive, but pollsters need to start calling cellphones. According to the latest CDC data, 23% of US adults, or 25% of US households are cellphone-only, writes Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com. Add in “cellphone-mostly” households and that jumps to 40%—and it could be even higher by November, never mind 2012. These people are just being ignored, even though they are very different from their landline counterparts. Cellphone-only users are more likely to be young, urban, poor, and technologically savvy than their peers. “All of these characteristics are correlated with political viewpoints and voting behavior,” Silver argues. Pollsters try to compensate by “upweighting” the few young people they do reach, but that’s a lousy solution, and a recent Pew study proves it. Pew pitted a weighted landline-only poll against one that called cells and discovered that the latter swung six points in Democrats’ favor—a statistically significant result.
I have been preaching this all the way back to the 2008 election when daily polls were all the news…..during the election I asked why the people with cels were not part of the poll…..and that any poll that did not include these people was NOT accurate in any way and should be ignored completely….I said that then and it is MORE important now.

The estimated time when whites will no longer make up the majority of Americans has been pushed back eight years — to 2050 — because the recession and stricter immigration policies have slowed the flow of foreigners into the U.S.Census Bureau figures released Wednesday update last year’s prediction that white children would become a minority in 2023 and the overall white population would follow in 2042. The earlier estimate did not take into account a drop in the number of people moving into the U.S. because of the economic crisis and the immigration policies imposed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
The 2050 estimate is one of four projections released that is based on rates for births and deaths and a scenario in which immigration continues its more recent, slower pace of adding nearly 1 million new foreigners each year. Demographers said that scenario offers the best look for now at the future demographic makeup based on current conditions, rather than other models which assume higher rates of immigration.
But there could be a downside to the “good” news……
The actual shift in demographics will be influenced by a host of factors that can’t be accurately forecast — the pace of the economic recovery, cultural changes, natural or manmade disasters, as well as an overhaul of immigration law, which may be debated in Congress as early as next year.
With that said, the white grumpy guys need to be praying for the economic down turn to last a little longer to help turn the tide that is coming…..
Hispanics now account for more than half the U.S. population growth this decade, indicating a powerful new sign of their demographic clout, according to a Pew Hispanic Center report released Thursday.
The Hispanic population also expanded dramatically in the 1990s, but in that decade its growth accounted for less than 40 percent of the nation’s total population increase.
Hispanics now represent 50.5 percent of the U.S. population growth since 2000, although they were only 15 percent of the population in 2007.
The Pew report also highlights a significant new driver of the population increases for the nation’s largest minority: Unlike the 1990s when immigration was the major factor in Hispanic population growth, births in the U.S. are mostly responsible for the increases this decade.
Jeffery Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, said Census data shows the Hispanic population has increased 10.2 million, from 35.3 million in 2000 to 45.5 million by July 2007.
A natural demographic increase — births minus deaths — is responsible for 6 million of the new Hispanic residents this decade. International migration — which among Hispanics has been calculated in the past to be two-thirds undocumented — accounts for 4.2 million of the increase, Passel said.
The Census Bureau’s figures do not distinguish whether immigrants are legal or illegal.
Where’s it worst? Ohio, according to our analysis, which racked up four of the 10 cities on our list: Youngstown, Canton, Dayton and Cleveland. The runner-up is Michigan, with two cities–Detroit and Flint–making the ranking.
These, and four other metropolitan statistical areas, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, face fleeing populations, painful waves of unemployment and barely growing economies. By our measure, they’ve struggled the worst of any areas in the nation in the 21st century. And they face even bleaker futures.
Another brutal statistic all the cities share is a diminishing population. So far this decade, 115,000 people have left Cleveland, for other climes. Smaller changes in other regions can be just as painful. Nearly 30,000 people have left Youngstown, Ohio, and they aren’t being replaced by either new babies or new immigrants.
Still, the cities we found to be struggling don’t vary widely by age, and this factor had little influence in the rankings. The oldest city in our top 10, Scranton, Penn., had 45% of its population over 45; the youngest, Flint had 38% over 45.
The worst news is, of course, economic. When we looked at the most recent gross domestic product estimates for 155 metropolitan statistical areas estimated to have $10 billion or more GDP in 2005–economies about the size of Asheville, N.C., or Tallahassee, Fla.–the news was predictably terrible for the Rust Belt.
But yet, the voters in these areas latch onto the candidate that promises the best scenario and yet nothing has changed. Go figure!
I was really pissed after Phil Gramm made his now infamous statement about the American people. But after thinking it over completely I must agree with Gramm. Oh hell, not for the same reason he said but on others. America is truly a nation of whiners.
Why do I say this? Glad you asked.
WE whine about the price of gas while we pump it into a large SUV that gets 4 gallons to the mile. WE whine about the price of food yet we throw away enough food to feed a small third world country. We whine about the leadership of the country but we continue the same types to Washington.
It is the age old problem, everyone sees the problem but it is up toi someone to solve it…we cannot be bothered with that part of the problem.
So I say to my fellow Americans….Whine on and do nothing…that is always a good solution to the problem.
