Waging Peace By Talking to ISIS « Antiwar.com Blog

This article ought to get the macho “John Wayne” types into a stroke……I mean the US had rather kill our enemies into submission than to waste time talking with them…….

I cannot wait for the mental midgets on the Right to see this…..though I am sure that there are those of the Left that are chest thumpers also…..and they should get their panties in a wad also……

If there is a way to end this thing without the loss of more lives then why not try it…..I mean we can go back to killing if it does not work out……..

Is the blood lust so deep that nothing will suffice short of death?  If so, then I seem to recall a time in the 1930’s that this was tried and failed…….

Just a thought.

ISIS Wants a Truce – The Daily Beast

The war against ISIS seems to be going in the right direction…….there have been successes by the Coalition and also by ISIS to a smaller degree……but let’s say that we continue to make headway in the battle against this extremism…..could there be a possibility of a truce with ISIS?

I say NO…..but I have heard some suggest that there should be a consideration of a truce to stop the carnage…….not too damn likely….but a helluva idea to float in these days of little reliable info coming out of the Middle East……

You read this?  Then what say you?

ISIS Wants a Truce – The Daily Beast.

Give Peace a Chance?

Opinion from the desk of the Editor:

We have a ceasefire in Gaza and it is holding, for now (Sadly, did not last very long)…….talks are going on in Egypt between Palestinians and Israelis and Hamas (talks have been suspended for the renewed attacks in Gaza)…….and Hamas has offered a 10 year truce if certain demands are met….these are:

1. Return of IDF tank positions so that farmers can work their lands

2. Freeing of all prisoners arrested since June 23 (when 3 Israeli teens were killed by Hamas operatives), and improving the conditions of those currently in prison.

3. Lifting of Israel’s naval blockade around Gaza along with the complete opening of the land border crossings.

4. Establishment of an international airport and seaport in Gaza.

5. Expansion of Gaza fishing zone by six miles.

6. Open the Israel-Gaza Rafah border crossing permanently under UN supervision, instead of under Israel’s watch.

7. 10 year truce with Israel along with the deployment of an international observer force on the border.

8. Israel must never enter Gaza under any circumstances and protect Palestinian Muslim worshippers at Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

9. Israel must refrain from interfering with the newly created unity Palestinian  government between Fatah and Hamas.

10. Rehabilitation of Gaza Industrial Zones and allowance for Gaza to create a border protection force.

Try to look at the requests/demands with an objective eye.  Of course they will be unacceptable to Israel.  However, read the list and tell me where there is a problem.
The UN needs to step into the action about here…….base member countries on the ground to keep the peace…….then Israel needs to approve most of them and then we will see who is scamming who.
What does Israel have to lose? They have enough firepower to do what they do best….destroy.  And the West will make sure that they are never without superior weapons systems.
If Israel wants to prove their claims about Hamas then this is the perfect way to expose their deception.  Of course the Zionists within the government will never allow this plan to go into effect.  And the reasons are obvious.
Now for Hamas….they need to accept this plan and hold true to their proposals….this will go along way of proving to the world that they are truly on the side of the Palestinian people and not just a cell of terrorists.
This will make the Palestinians happy and secure and it will make Israelis safe and secure…..where is the problem with either of those?
Hamas has offered…now it is Israel’s turn to prove that they truly want peace and not the destruction of the Palestinians.
How will this end?
My guess is with further airstrikes and more destruction……

Israel Is Unhappy

Have you had enough of the mindless dribble coming out of the rollout of Obamacare?  Or maybe it is the crack smoking mayor………….

To comment on the title….Go Figure!

Last week I wrote a post about the beginning of talks between the West and Iran over their nuke issue and now there is more on the process……

Yes sports fans Israel is unhappy with the P5+1 meetings with Iran on their nuke program……..

(AP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he “utterly rejects” the emerging nuclear deal between western powers and Iran, calling it a “bad deal” and promising that Israel will do everything it needs to do to defend itself. Israel believes Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, and says international pressure should be stepped up, not eased, in order to force Iran to dismantle its nuclear program. The PM spoke before meeting with John Kerry, who will travel to Geneva later today to join the nuclear talks.

Kerry’s decision to fly to Geneva comes after signs that global powers and Iran were close to a deal that would cap some of Iran’s suspected nuclear program in exchange for limited relief from economic sanctions. “I understand the Iranians are walking around very satisfied in Geneva as well they should because they got everything and paid nothing,” Netanyahu told reporters. “They wanted relief of sanctions after years of grueling sanctions, they got that. They paid nothing because they are not reducing in any way their nuclear enrichment capability,” he said. “This is a very bad deal and Israel utterly rejects it. Israel is not obliged by this agreement and Israel will do everything it needs to do to defend itself and defend the security of its people.”

This what I write about…….Israel needs a foe to keep its hold on the scrotum of the West……it is not at all about the nukes but rather to retain ALL aid it gets from other countries……personally, I am weary of the “David And Goliath” bullsh*t.

As long as they oppose everything done to try and make the world, including Israel, safe….then they have lost all validity in my eyes……I suspect that peace is not on their agenda…….the world needs to see Israel for what it is………a state of aggression…….the days of Abraham and Joshua are done….time to start acting like a civilized country.

While Israel was pouting and bitching…..there is some new news out of Iran…….

(Newser) – Talks in Tehran between Iran and the UN’s nuclear chief have produced a “roadmap” for boosting inspections—but some of the sites that most interest UN investigators aren’t included in the deal as it stands, the AP notes. Still, they’ll get access to a planned heavy water reactor that has worried France, as well as a major uranium mine. The plan involves Iran opening its doors over a three months, a period that may frustrate the West, but it could also lead to a more expansive deal.

Indeed, the UN’s Yukiya Amano and Iran nuclear boss Ali Akbar Salehi say they aim to “cooperate further … to resolve all present and past issues.” Separate talks in Geneva, which ended yesterday, were less productive, though John Kerry says the US and other negotiating countries reached “unity” on a nuclear deal only to be rejected by Iran. Earlier reports had suggested France opposed a deal that appeared to be forming, but “the French signed off on” a proposal this weekend, Kerry said. Iran, however, “couldn’t take it.” While it’s not “a race to complete just any agreement,” Kerry signaled optimism that a deal could be reached in a matter of months, Reuters notes. Talks are set to resume Nov. 20.

Let’s say there is a deal on the nukes in Iran….how long will it be before Hamas or Hezbollah is working on a nuke?  This is all a game for Israel.

Iran: Talk Is Cheap

A good day for news that is not the traditional ACA whining and bitching……..

There is good news and bad……the bad news is that war hawks and Israel oughta have their panties in twist for Iran is sitting down to talks……the good news is……Iran is sitting down for talks with the rest of the world…..and those talks start today!

(Newser) – Talks kick off today between Iran and the other P5+1 nations, and both sides were brimming with cautious optimism. Iranian negotiator Mohammad Javed Zarif touted the possibility of a breakthrough, while a senior Obama administration official said that they see “the outlines of a first step,” the New York Times reports. Here are the stories about the talks today:

  • The US wants Iran to freeze its nuclear activities, perhaps for six months, and negotiate a broader deal in the interim. In exchange, Iran would get some limited, temporary sanction relief. Exact details are hazy, but the five other negotiating nations have signed off on the plan, the Washington Post reports.
  • This entire rapprochement with Iran kicked into high gear following a much-touted phone call from President Rouhani to President Obama. But the fateful call wasn’t as spontaneous as it was made out to be, the Wall Street Journal revealed today. Obama had been quietly reaching out to Tehran for months, sources say. The administration hosted a series of secret meetings and calls with Iranian exiles and Arab monarchs, and gave Iranian expert Puneet Talwar free rein to converse with Iran. Susan Rice was also enlisted to talk with Iran’s UN ambassador.
  • Not everyone’s thrilled about the thaw. Countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia have been making their displeasure known. “On a good day, we’re paranoid about Iran,” one senior Arab official says. And some in Washington are listening; Bob Corker is considering introducing legislation to block negotiations, mandating far greater concessions before sanctions are lifted, Fox News reports.

Depending on where you sit at this table……talks could prove fruitful….or they could prove to be a con job perpetrated by one side or the other….and there is a third rail to this story….there are those that do NOT want talks with Iran at all…..if successful they could lose their strangle hold on the US…..

Personally, I want a peaceful end to all this crap about nukes…..how about you?

Middle East Optimism

The media is all a twitter (giddiness not the social network) for the first time in many years there is a chance that the Israelis-Palestinians may be closing in on a peace accord.  It would be laughable if it were not so damn pathetic…..this story is 40 years old and it is no closer than it was a half a century ago.

We can pretend that this is a good move on everyone’s side but it is not….these talks are to decide if there will be other talks that will lead to yet more talks that in turn may lead to some sort of agreement……dies anyone else see the humor in all that?

Shall we recap for those that have no intention of caring one way or the other?

1968–UN Resolution 242–The resolution called for the “withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict”, and “respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force”.

1978–Camp Davis Accords–The talks lasted for 12 days and resulted in two agreements.

The first was called A Framework for Peace in the Middle East. It laid down principles for peace, expanding on resolution 242, set out what it hoped was a way of resolving what it called the “Palestinian problem”, agreed that there should be a treaty between Egypt and Israel and called for other treaties between Israel and its neighbours.

The weakness of the first agreement was the section on the Palestinians. The plan aimed to set up a “self-governing authority” in the West Bank and Gaza, leading to eventual “final status” talks, but the Palestinians were not party to the agreement.

The second accord was the framework for the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. This followed in 1979, after an Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai.

This was the first recognition of Israel as a state by a major Arab country. They probably stand as the most successful negotiations in the whole peace process.

1991–Madrid Conference–This conference, co-sponsored by the US and the Soviet Union, was designed to follow up the Egypt-Israel treaty by encouraging other Arab countries to sign their own agreements with Israel.

Jordan, Lebanon and Syria were invited as well as Israel and Egypt. The Palestinians were also represented, but as part of a joint delegation with Jordan and not by Yasser Arafat or other leading figures in the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), to whom the Israelis objected.

The conference eventually led to a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan in 1994, but this probably would have happened anyway.

1993–Oslo Agreement–The talks took place in secret under Norwegian auspices and the agreement was signed on the White House lawn on 13 September 1993, witnessed by President Bill Clinton.

WHITE HOUSE HANDSHAKE

The PLO leader Yasser Arafat and the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands.

The agreement was that Israeli troops would withdraw in stages from the West Bank and Gaza, that a “Palestinian Interim Self-Governing Authority” would be set up for a five-year transitional period, leading to a permanent settlement based on resolutions 242 and 338.

There was an exchange of letters in which Yasser Arafat stated: “The PLO recognises the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security.” Yitzhak Rabin said: “The Government of Israel has decided to recognise the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people.”

2000–Camp David–The talks took place in July between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat.

Camp David, 2000

At Camp David in 2000, Barak and Arafat failed to agree

There was no agreement. However, the negotiations were more detailed than ever before.

The basic problem was that the maximum Israel offered was less than the minimum the Palestinians could accept.

Israel offered the Gaza Strip, a large part of the West Bank, plus extra land from the Negev desert, while keeping major settlement blocks and most of East Jerusalem. It proposed Islamic guardianship of key sites in the Old City of Jerusalem and contributions to a fund for Palestinian refugees.

The Palestinians wanted to start with a reversion to the lines of 1967, offered the Israelis rights over the Jewish quarter of the Old City and wanted recognition of the “right of return” of Palestinian refugees.

2002–Saudi Peace Plan–After the failure of bilateral talks and the resumption of conflict, the Saudi peace plan presented at an Arab summit in Beirut in March 2002 went back to a multilateral approach and in particular signalled a desire by the Arab world as a whole to put an end to this dispute.

Under the plan, Israel would withdraw to the lines of June 1967, a Palestinian state would be set up in the West Bank and Gaza and there would be a “just solution” of the refugee issue. In return, Arab countries would recognise Israel.

The plan was re-endorsed by another Arab summit in Riyadh in 2007.

Its strength is the support given by Arab countries to a two-state solution. Its weakness is that the parties have to negotiate the same issues on which they have failed so far.

2003–Road Map–The road map is a plan drawn up by the “Quartet” – the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations. It does not lay down the details of a final settlement, but suggests how a settlement might be approached.

It followed efforts made by US Senator George Mitchell to get the peace process back on track in 2001.

The plan was preceded by an important statement in June 2002 by President George W Bush who became the first US president to call for a Palestinian state. The road map tries to lay down conditions for its achievement.

It proposed a phased timetable, putting the establishment of security before a final settlement. It is designed to create confidence, leading to final status talks.

Phase 1: Both sides would issue statements supporting the two-state solution, the Palestinians would end violence, act against “all those engaged in terror”, draw up a constitution, hold elections and the Israelis would stop settlement activities and act with military restraint

Phase two: Would see the creation, at an international conference, of a Palestinian state with “provisional borders”

Phase 3: Final agreement talks.

The road map has not been implemented. Its timetable called for the final agreement to be reached in 2005. It has been overtaken by events.

2003–Geneva Accord–While official efforts foundered, an informal agreement was announced in December 2003 by Israeli and Palestinian figures – Yossi Beilin, one of the architects of Oslo, on the Israeli side, and former Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo on the other.

It reverses the concept of the Road Map, in which the growth of security and confidence precede a political agreement and puts the agreement first, which is then designed to produce security and peace.

Its main compromise is that the Palestinians effectively give up their “right of return” in exchange for almost the whole of the West Bank, though there could be a token return by a few. Israel would give up some major settlements such as Ariel, but keep others closer to the border, with swaps of land in Israel for any taken in the West Bank.

Palestinians would have the right to have their capital in East Jerusalem, though with Israeli sovereignty over the Western Wall in the Old City. The Geneva agreement has no official status.

Another unofficial agreeemnt was one drawn up by a former head of the Israeli Shin Bet internal security service Ami Ayalon and a former PLO representative in Jerusalem Sari Nusseibeh. This envisaged a return to the 1967 lines, an open city of Jerusalem and an end to the Palestinian claim to a right of return to former homes.

And new Obama and Kerry have a new plan to bring peace in our time……everyone of those plans and most had some good points were derailed by one major item….SETTLEMENTS!  And now we are at it again….trying to bringing peace to a land that does not want peace……

Before the talks start in earnest there has been a major situation….again….

(LATimes) – For the second time in a week, Israel advanced plans for more than 1,000 new units of housing on land it seized in 1967, brushing aside U.S. pleas to curtail settlement construction while the Obama administration attempts to revive long-stalled peace talks.Israel’s Housing Ministry said Sunday that it would publish tenders for 1,187 units of housing, including 793 units in Jewish developments in the Jerusalem area and 394 units in the West Bank.Palestinians say Israel’s building announcements are sabotaging the renewed peace process, relaunched last month by Secretary of State John F. Kerry. A second round of talks is set to resume in Jerusalem on Wednesday.Last week, Israel’s military advanced about 1,100 units of previously announced housing units, most of them in small, isolated settlements that Israel is unlikely to retain if and when a Palestinian state is created.

Most of the international community views Israel’s settlement construction as illegal.

Yep that should go a long way in making the people think about peace……..

The one thing you need to know about those newest round of peace talks…..the start will be talks that will lay the ground work for talks that will set about the agenda for peace talks…….in other words there is too much time for something to go wrong….and mark my words…..SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG!

Any optimism the media has now is just to sell copy….NO one believes that these talks of talks will be any different than the last 45 years of talks………any thoughts?

Why Not A Non-Violent Approach?

International Studies Desk

Subject:  Middle East

I realize I said I would not post on the Middle East conflict again and I will hold to that…this post was a post in waiting….and I feel compelled to post it…..

For the time being any Middle East peace is on the back burner…it has been overshadowed by the US mid-terms and Obama’s visit to India….but people need to keep an eye on the region……it could be the powder keg that erupts without warning and becomes front page fodder….again…..

I recall back in the day in the ME there was the first Intifada…..when kids were throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers and were met with bullets and tanks…this gave the Palestinian cause a shot to the arm in the world stage….and then as quickly as the sympathy began it was over….why?  Some moron thought that firing rockets at the Israelis was a good idea….and once they did all that international good will and sympathy went down the crapper…..

How about a non-violent approach?  Well that is just ducky….but what did Gandhi accomplish?  England would have given India up anyway…..the caste system is still prevalent….so what did they accomplish?  MLK in the Us, what did they accomplish?  Blacks can vote and eat at all lunch counters…but they are still seen as 2nd class citizens by many….so what did they really accomplish?

I have heard some say that the Palestinians should take a page from the playbook of Gandhi and MLK, jr and try the non-violence approach….but is that a good idea?  In an article written by Yglesias for thinkprogress.rg…..

………as it turns out the IDF isn’t just folding immediately upon contact with non-violent tactics. Instead, Abdallah Abu Rahmah who was leading non-violent resistance in the village of Bil’in was sentenced yesterday to 12 months in prison. Some people I’ve spoken to here say this goes to show that non-violence is hopeless and that a return to armed intifada is inevitable. They may be right about the inevitability, but I think they’re wrong about the hopeless part. Your Gandhis, your Martin Luther Kings, and your Nelson Mandelas all spent time in prison and prevailed in the end. The point, however, is that it only works if it captures the attention of the world so here I am paying attention.I know that a lot of decent people try to avoid commenting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because they find the debate too unpleasant. But I find that those same decent people tend to be the ones who like to muse about “where’s the Palestinian MLK?” and such. So if you’re one of those people, I implore you to pay attention and mention this. The alternative to there being some sign that this is catching the eyes of the world is a return to violence and counter-violence and disaster.

Contrary to popular belief….the theory of non-violent action is NOT appropriate or effective in every case…….and the Middle East Peace Process is one of those cases….with that said……it could be part of the plan to get Israel to the table……the one thing that is seldom mentioned when talking about non-violence….that is that your opponent does NOT have to abide by the technique……India comes to mind….Selma comes to mind…..

Taleban? Let’s Talk!

International Studies Group

Subject:  Afghanistan/Pakistan/Peace/Taliban

Since Gen. Pratreus has taken over the command of troops in Afghanistan there has been a wealth of speculation that he will go about the war the way he did in Iraq….that is to bring some of the warring factions over to the ‘good guys’ side and that will hasten the end of the conflict…..I am amused!  And underwhelmed by such extreme lack of knowledge on the part of the media…..yes…we all want this horrendous wart to end and our guys and gals return to their loved ones……the success of the so-called “surge” was not so much what the US did but rather what the AQ  guys were doing to the tribes in western Iraq….the Sheiks got pissed and decided to throw in with the US and its allies….for the time being…..

The strategy of the surge is a noble one but I think a little too optimistic for Afghanistan….

Karzai has admitted that he is in talks with the Taleban….but what does that really mean?

According to the Daily Times, the meeting, held in Kabul two weeks ago to contain the network, was attended by Maulvi Abdul Kabir, a wanted former Taliban governor, his deputy Sedre Azam and Anwarul Haq Mujahed, an imprisoned terrorist, who were flown to the Afghan capital from Peshawar.

Kabir was the governor of Nangarhar province during the Taliban rule and the current head of the Taliban’s Peshawar council, while Mujahed is a terrorist leader credited with helping Osama Bin Laden escape the US assault on Tora Bora in 2001.Washington and Kabul are reportedly seeking to capitalize on Kabir’s position in Afghanistan’s powerful and dominant Zadran tribe.

An Afghan official said that the US and Afghanistan governments want to try and sap some of Haqqani’s tribal-based strength by bringing Kabir on board and dividing tribal loyalties.

Of course, denials began to fly out of Washington and that the US would not jeopardize the troops with such an unthoughtful occurrence…..me thinks that they protests too much…..and that leads me to think that there is something to these reports….but more…it is a dash, a mad dash to make Patreus look like the miracle worker that he was portrayed in Iraq and to give some padding to the Obama strategy…..

How Not To Have A Lasting Peace

International Studies Group

Subject:  Middle East

There are ways to go about negotiating for a peaceful end to hostilities….and these are NOT on that list anywhere….a couple of things have occurred since the collapse of the latest attempt at a peaceful solution on the Pal/Israeli conflict that has gone on and on and….for over 60 years….

First, from the mouth of a Fattah (that is Palestinian group, if you were confused)….

Mahmoud Aloul, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, said that Israel’s “racist policies” were meant to undermine the peace process.

“The Palestinian Authority made every effort to avoid reaching this conclusion, but Israeli racist policies led to the failure of the peace process,” he added.PLO negotiators Saeb Erekat and Nabil Sha’ath also reiterated their refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Another PLO official, Yasser Abed Rabbo, accused Netanyahu of seeking to destroy the image of US President Barack Obama in the Middle East by raising such a demand

Then the president of the Pal Authority made this comment:

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that under no circumstances would the PA sign an agreement with Israel which required the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state or a land swap.

“The PA recognized Israel’s existence in 1993, and now Israel needs to recognize the Palestinian state in line with the 1967 borders,”  Abbas said during a meeting in Ramallah with Knesset members from the left-wing party Hadash.

Abbas clarified that the PA would exhibit flexibility regarding the nature of the negotiations, but added that they would not negotiate on issues the Palestinian people consider principal matters.  (where does he get his figures?)

After all the jaw flapping by both sides and so far we got nothing!  Pals die….Israelis die….and all the time they play a blame game……this makes me want to ask….ARE YOU F*CKERS REALLY WANTING PEACE?
