Eroding America’s Moral Authority

I saw the headline of this piece and I thought it was a piece of satire.  Why?  I do not think the US has had a moral authority in decades.  But as I read the article I found it was not written in humor but a serious break in attitudes around the world.  It was not the “Ignorati” attempting humor.

I do try not to be one those micro-cephalic that are a one dimensional thinker, a one trick pony if you will….so when I was presented with this bit of philosophical fodder I felt I must expand….

SO…..Moral Authority?  WTF?

  1. moral authority(Noun)

The quality or characteristic of being respected for having good character or knowledge, especially as a source of guidance or an exemplar of proper conduct.

Moral authority means the underpinning philosophy that creates or interprets laws, or it can have other definitions. Many individuals, especially elected officials, are deemed to have the greatest authority. Alternately, the law itself may be viewed as having authority to create morals, and respected as the source upon which people base their behavior. The matter gets much more complex, especially in societies where individuals have diverse views on what constitutes morality.

Okay the refresher course is ended…..now to the article that brought me to think in philosophical terms…..

An Act Of Morality

A Sunday and what better day to write about the subject of ……..Morality?

Now here is a subject that I seldom, if ever, write about…..why?  We humans all have a different idea and definition of what is moral and of morality.  It is like religion….we could argue until the cows come home and never have a clear winner or loser in that debate.

But I decide to break my moratorium on this subject after something I read the other day…..after all it is the weekend I feel I need to write about something that is not my “norm”……..

I will admit it I do not watch much TV but I do enjoy HBO’s Game Of Thrones……I like all such programming about the Medieval times…..

That article that I spoke of earlier…….

Fans of HBO’s massively popular show Game of Thrones frequently get upset over the deaths of favorite characters, changes made to George R.R. Martin’s novels, and any scene featuring Bran. But enemies of the show have more grievous concerns, and they’re calling on the government for help. Yesterday, MuckRock published a number of complaints made to the FCC regarding Game of Thrones. Letter writers are mad about everything from “open homosexual perverted sex acts” onscreen to Comcast’s generally terrible service. But one fed-up American launched into a truly impressive rant against YouTube, Netflix sex, and nudity before calling on the FCC to join the fight of “emotionally mature” people and kill off Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones should not be allowed because of rape and child molestation,” this firebrand writes to the FCC. He or she goes on to state that no plot—no matter how complex—excuses the explicitness of the acts portrayed on the show. “It is not educational,” the complainer writes. “It is sensationalized cruelty.” Plus, the commercials for it are “misleading.” Finally, like the Night’s Watch turning to the Iron Throne for help, the letter writer begs the FCC to rally to his or her cause. “There are still people out there who are not warped and perverted. Please help US, not the shock jocks that are out to offend for fame and fortune.” Read the entire FCC complaint at MuckRock.

Okay I have a problem with people that think that they somehow hold the moral ground……I understand that some may not appreciate the theme of this show and keep that in mind….IT IS A SHOW!  It is entertainment of which some may not like but that is not their place to tell me that I do not like it.  I am weary of sanctimonious a/holes telling me what I must believe……I shall NEVER bow to that….PERIOD!

There is an easy fix if this show offends your sensibilities or your morals……Do Not Watch It!

And for Christ’s sake….get over yourself and leave the rest of us…….. ALONE!

Is Morality A One Way Street?

If you have ever taken a college level philosophy course then you will recall the terms “ethics” and “morality”…..and if you had a good professor there was a discussion on the terms……sorry I digress….the whole question of morality forces me to revisit my college days and the debates I had………

There is a situation that the world needs to confront, especially the US…..that is the subject of targeted assassinations……most times by drone.

The debate started by then it was halted by the events in Baltimore…….now the question should be….will we ever have this debate or is it a dead issue?

Is the targeted murder of an individual moral?

The American people seem to think that targeted assassination is okay…..at least by drone……

Nearly 75 percent of Americans approve of using drone strikes to target American citizens who have joined foreign terrorist organizations, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll released on Friday.

The poll was conducted in the days following President Barack Obama‘s public apology for a drone strike as part of a counterterrorism operation that unintentionally resulted in the deaths of American hostage Warren Weinstein and Italian hostage Giovanni Lo Porto.

The survey also found that six in 10 Americans support using drones to target terrorists in general, while only 13 percent oppose it and 24 percent “did not feel strongly either way.” Support is higher among Republicans than Democrats (72 percent to 60 percent), while independents are less decisive with 45 percent in favor and 12 percent opposed. In addition, 47 percent of Americans said, according to the poll, that it is acceptable to use drones to kill terrorists abroad if innocent Americans are at risk of being killed as well.

What do you think?  Is the targeted assassination moral?  What about the killing of a person on some religious mumbo jumbo….is this moral?

Moral is moral.  There is NO leeway in the definition.  Killing 20 to eliminate one is no where near a moral act.

News You Will NEVER Hear

While all the mental midgets rattle on and on about the BS that is ACA (Obamacare, for those that may be confused)…..the world and its affairs continue…and some of them are good news…..Israel may not think so…but they are good news…..

Though the details of the IAEA’s report itself have not been made public, officials familiar with it say that the Iranian government basically stopped its expansion of its civilian enrichment program after the election of President Hassan Rouhani.

The report is said to also note that the Arak heavy water reactor’s construction isn’t speeding up in any real way, and that no new components have been added to the reactor since Rouhani’s inauguration.

The report appears to dramatically undercut claims from hawks that Rouhani is using the talks as cover while he expands his nation’s civilian nuclear program, since the program itself appears to be settling down.

The announcement was quickly criticized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, likely on the fear that it could bolster the case for diplomacy, insisting he is “unimpressed” by the report, and the question was never if Iran was still expanding its civilian program, but how to force them to scrap the entirety of the program.

(thanx to antiwar.com for the op-ed)…….

We have all heard the horror stories of the Saudis and their morality police…..dudes that patrol around beating people for driving if female, talking to men, if you are a female, wearing the proper attire, if you are a female….etc….but did you know that the old Iranian regime had a similar police force?  But wait!

(Please check out the reblog)…….a good source of info from an Iranian young women.,..thanx for the updates.
