Another Day–Another Mass Shooting

I appears the new ‘norm’ is another shooting/chaos every day or so.

The latest is in the state of North Carolina….where 3 have been killed in the attack….

Following a gunman’s rampage in Orange, Calif., on Wednesday that left four dead, CNN noted that mass shooting was one of 20 since the Atlanta spa shootings in mid-March. Now, yet another one to add to the list. Police say at least seven people were shot early Saturday at a house party in Wilmington, NC, leaving three dead and four injured, per WECT. After the shooting, which took place soon after midnight, police Chief Donny Williams said the general public didn’t appear to be any danger and that law enforcement was working on trying to ID suspects.

Police also they also don’t yet have a motive pinned down. It’s not clear what the conditions are of the injured. “Our hearts go out to all affected by this senseless violence,” a public information officer says in a release, asking members of the public to come forward if they have any info on the shooting, per the Wilmington Star-News. The number to call is 910-343-3609, or people can text an anonymous tip to 847411 by including the keyword “WPDNC.”

This is pathetic!

This is becoming a daily occurrence….

Another mentally ill person with a gun….apparently that is the ‘norm’ now as well.

How long must we Americans endure this terrorism before someone steps up to put a stop to it?

Cops with bigger and better guns has done little to curb this trend.

I apologize but it seems hollow to wish a Happy Easter when there is so much stupid and ignorance is grasping the country.

Closing Thought–30Dec20

The year id 1970…..the height of the antiwar movement….the location is Kent State…..Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured on May 4, 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War. The tragedy was a watershed moment for a nation divided by the conflict in Southeast Asia. In its immediate aftermath, a student-led strike forced the temporary closure of colleges and universities across the country. Some political observers believe the events of that day in northeast Ohio tilted public opinion against the war and may have contributed to the downfall of President Richard Nixon.

I bring up this short history because one of the survivors of that shooting spree has died….

Alan Canfora, who was one of nine students who were wounded in the 1970 Kent State shootings but survived, has died. He was 71.

Canfora died Dec. 20 at home from an illness unrelated to COVID-19, according to a Facebook post by his sister, Chic Canfora.

“It is with immense sadness that I share news of the passing of my beloved brother, Alan Canfora — a devastating loss to our family, friends and the Kent State/May 4 community,” she wrote in the post as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal.

As a junior at Kent State, Canfora was one of the hundreds of students who protested at the Ohio campus May 1-4. They were demonstrating against the Vietnam War and the National Guard’s presence on their campus.

The Guardsmen fired on unarmed protesters May 4. Canfora was shot in the right wrist in the first 13 seconds. Four students — Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Lee Scheuer and William Schroeder — were killed.

This may not mean much to some but to me it was a turning point in our protests against the Vietnam War….

It is a crying shame that this country cannot muster a protest movement against our many wars and especially our endless wars of Iraq and Afghanistan.

These people we brave beyond compare….something that is sadly missing in our society these days.

Will we ever see the antiwar movement re-born?

The Killings Of 2019

As the year come to an end we should look back at 2019 and the record setting year for mass shootings.

It all began just 19 days into the New Year….

The first one occurred 19 days into the new year when a man used an ax to kill four family members including his infant daughter. Five months later, 12 people were killed in a workplace shooting in Virginia. Twenty-two more died at a Walmart in El Paso in August.

A database compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University shows that there were more mass killings in 2019 than any year dating back to at least the 1970s, punctuated by a chilling succession of deadly rampages during the summer.

In all, there were 41 mass killings, defined as when four or more people are killed excluding the perpetrator. Of those, 33 were mass shootings. More than 210 people were killed.

Sadly it is NO longer shocking…..even sadder is that these killings have become common place and in doing so has become a so-so event……even the MSM does not dwell on the shootings as it once did.

The new year and the new decade may prove to be yet another record setting time for our gun violence and mass killings.

It is truly sad.

Closing Thought–14Nov19

We all have read or heard about the mass shooting this year (348 so far) and the pundits and so-called experts have had a wealth of ideas to stop or at least slow down the rate of death.

One such ‘solution’ is to encourage the male fighting spirit…..

Horrific mass shootings routinely bring out strong and passionate views from all sides of the political spectrum. Is the breakdown in family to blame? Or is it not enough background checks and lax firearm regulations, violent video games, mental illness, a cultural fixation on aggression as a solution to problems? The pundits and politicians have all the answers—yet somehow the mass shootings don’t stop.

Behind this debate over violence, however, lies a counterintuitive truth about conflict.

In a certain way, mass shootings—most often perpetrated by males—are a sign that we need more fighting. They are a reclassification of violence from direct to indirect, a shift from confrontation to elimination. Let me specify what I mean here. Gun violence provides a false avenue for loners and sometimes mentally ill young men to store up resentment and then unleash it all at once in overwhelming, lethal force. Rather than direct conflict against bullies or a bitterly resented group as a whole, it provides a false alternative, a fake ace up the sleeve. Rather than confronting those who torture our psyches, weaponized violence gives the illusion that we can just eliminate such people and situations altogether.

Is this a “Fight Club”?

Well if it ends the mass shootings then I say let the suckers fight…..a couple of missing teeth is far superior than dying, right?

Trump On Gun Control

After a weekend of mass shootings and all the coverage it has gotten from the MSM our Dear president has made a statement that may surprise many……but not before spending time Tweeting about a UFC fight…..

As the nation reeled from two mass shootings in less than a day, President Donald Trump spent the first hours after the tragedies out of sight at his New Jersey golf course, sending out tweets of support awkwardly mixed in with those promoting a celebrity fight and attacking his political foes, the AP reports. Trump was to travel back to Washington later Sunday and aides said he would likely address reporters, but the nation did not glimpse the president in the immediate aftermath of a shooting in El Paso, Texas, that killed at least 20 people and, hours later, one in Dayton, Ohio, that claimed at least nine lives. Never seemingly comfortable consoling a nation in grief, Trump will be carefully watched for his response to the attacks, again inviting comparison to his predecessors who have tried to heal the country in moments of national trauma.

“The FBI, local and state law enforcement are working together in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning. “God bless the people of El Paso Texas. God bless the people of Dayton, Ohio.” His first tweet after the El Paso shooting on Saturday hit similar notes, with Trump calling it “terrible” and promising the full support of the federal government. But just 14 minutes later, he tweeted again, a discordant post wishing UFC fighter Colby Covington, a Trump supporter, good luck in his fight that evening. That was soon followed up with a pair of retweets of African American supporters offering testimonials to Trump’s policies helping black voters, though the president polls very poorly with blacks. Trump’s two elder sons attended the UFC fight, while social media photos show that Trump stopped by a wedding at his Bedminster club on Saturday night.

But not to worry he finally found the words for a nation reeling from the violence…..

President Trump emerged from his New Jersey golf club Sunday and said “perhaps” the government could do more to control guns, CNN reports. “We’ve actually done a lot,” he said on a tarmac before boarding Air Force One for Washington. “But perhaps more has to be done.” The president, who has used explosive rhetoric and posted tweets that many consider racist, added that “hate has no place in our country and we’re gonna take care of it.” He also said the weekend’s two major mass shootings, which left 29 dead and 53 wounded, would have been worse without good law enforcement.

“It would have been unbelievable,” he said. “It [was] horrible but it would have been so much worse.” Still, USA Today quotes him as saying “we have to get it stopped. This has been going on for years.” CNN notes that Trump did manage a bump-stock ban, but hasn’t gone after gun control on a larger scale, unlike President Obama, whose executive actions on the issue included mental health and background checks. Trump said he had spoken to Attorney General William Barr and others about guns and would make a statement Monday at 10am, per Bloomberg.

How long will it take for his “people” to “clarify” what the president has said?

Will the NRA stand by for such talk?

Better yet will those enablers of Trump within the GOP stand by this type of rhetoric?

Wait!  Even better yet will Trump walk back and waffle as he seems to do on most issues?

Or will he use his Executive Power to do something substantial?

How long will it take for yet another unstable individual to go on a shooting rampage?

Will the Democrats get some much needed traction on this issue?

Finally, does anyone really care…other than the media?

So many questions….and so few answers.
