Local–I am writing this at about 3 am and the temp outside is 92 and I anxiously await cooler temps. Not much happening locally most sane people are in the A/C.
Personal–I had my infusion on Thursday so I am still fighting off the side effects….a visit to the cancer doctor is happy with my tests the prostrate cancer is almost into remission (for now) and the lung cancer is still there and being treated but the treatments are working (for now) so she was happy but more tests will be needed (of course there are).
As someone who is fighting 2 cancers I am always looking for items that could change treatment for those that suffer from this hideous disease….
New possibilities for the treatment of colon cancer….
Dr. Stacy Norton was only 7 years old when her mother died of colon cancer, one of several family members struck by aggressive tumors at unusually young ages. Decades later, Norton rolled up her sleeve to help test if a new kind of vaccine might protect her and her own children from cancer. The Houston doctor is among an estimated 1 million Americans who have Lynch syndrome, a faulty gene passed from a parent that puts them at extremely high risk of colorectal cancer and more vulnerable to certain other cancers, too, explains the AP. They’re often urged to get yearly colonoscopies—far more often than usual—that can spot and remove precancerous growths called polyps.
Now scientists are creating vaccines that aim to go further, teaching the immune system to intercept this type of brewing colon cancer before it turns into a full-fledged tumor. At least three potential Lynch syndrome vaccines are in development, including two in early clinical trials in the US and a third beginning in Britain. The shot that Norton helped test appears promising enough that its lead researcher, Dr. Eduardo Vilar-Sanchez of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, expects a larger study to begin early next year.
“It gives me hope,” said Norton, 59, of Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. She had already survived a different Lynch-caused cancer and has two children in their 20s who inherited her mutation. If a vaccine pans out, “perhaps they won’t have to have a colonoscopy every single year for the rest of their lives.” And for the first time since 2014, Norton’s own colonoscopies one and two years after vaccination were polyp-free. Then there is the ugly side of cancer….Kalshi will allow betting on cancer…..
Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket have long garnered a reputation for allowing users to make all kinds of ethically dubious bets, from the outcomes of deadly conflicts to mass famine.
As the New York Times reports, Kalshi will now even allow users to bet on whether clinical trials for potentially lifesaving drugs will succeed.
To critics, the move will effectively allow betting on the lives of patients trying a final intervention in the face of a lethal diagnosis. There’s even risk that those enrolled in these trials could choose to drop out if the market were to bet against a positive outcome.
“Turning loose a betting market in an ongoing randomized clinical trial really is a breach of scientific conduct,” Robert Califf, who served as FDA commissioner in the Biden administration, told the NYT.

Keeping with the health stuff….I spend a lot of time at the hospital with treatments, labs, doctors and other assorted fun things to do so when I read this it makes one a bit concerned….
A little-known fungus is quietly racing across the US, and doctors say the tools to stop it are thin. Candida auris, first spotted in the country in 2013, has now been confirmed in 23 states and is spreading fast, especially in hospitals, per CDC data cited by People. The agency logged 3,348 cases last year; as of July 18, this year’s tally had already reached 3,130, putting 2026 on pace to set a record.
The yeast mostly threatens people who are already extremely ill, especially those using ventilators, feeding tubes, or catheters—the Hill notes that C. auris can survive for quite some time on surfaces—or those who’ve had heavy exposure to antibiotics or antifungal medications. It can pass from people who show no symptoms, and when it does cause illness, the Cleveland Clinic notes it can trigger fever, chills, lethargy, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, and certain ear infections.
The bigger problem: Strains often rebuff standard antifungal drugs. “Many strains are resistant to azoles [a major antifungal drug class] … and some are also resistant to amphotericin B, which is often considered a drug of last resort,” says UT Health’s Nathan Wiederhold. Texas currently leads this year’s tally with 706 cases, followed by Michigan at 503. “The public should definitely not panic but should be concerned,” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong of UC San Francisco tells Healthline.

This maybe good news for those suffering with that peanut allergy….
A single course of capsules containing gut microbes from healthy donors raised the amount of peanut protein that six people with severe peanut allergies could tolerate during supervised food challenges.
The finding comes from a small, early-stage trial involving just 15 adults. But it’s the first published human evidence that deliberately reshaping the gut microbiome might influence food allergy.

A major study involving nearly 74,000 men has found that erectile dysfunction medication is associated with a significantly heightened risk of developing glaucoma, a potentially blinding eye condition.
Researchers at the National Taiwan University Hospital examined data from 73,854 men aged 40 and over, half of whom had been prescribed tadalafil — marketed as Cialis — or similar phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i) over a period spanning 2012 to 2022.
Those taking the drugs, which belong to the same pharmaceutical class as Viagra, were 22 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma than men not using the medication.

Louisiana has a problem with flesh eating bacteria….
Five Louisiana residents have died from Vibrio vulnificus, a dangerous and rare flesh-eating bacteria infection found naturally in warm coastal waters. Four more patients are in the hospital, the Louisiana Department of Health reported Thursday.
All nine patients had underlying health conditions when they were infected, LDH said.
During the same period over the last decade, Louisiana reported an average of seven cases and one death.

Authorities are struggling to get the outbreak of an explosive diarrhea-causing parasite under control. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 18,000 cases that have been confirmed or are being investigated across 45 states.
There had been 423 reported hospitalizations, but at least no deaths — until this week. On Monday, Michigan health officials confirmed that there are now two fatalities linked to the outbreak, an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis which is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
However, it’s important to note that both individuals had “significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration,” according to an update by Michigan Health and Human Services. In other words, both people didn’t die purely because they were infected by the parasite.

Astronomers studying the moon claim to have captured possible evidence of a technologically advanced nonhuman civilization.
Scientists at Ukraine’s Main Astronomical Observatory reported observing more than 20 unidentified objects moving near and across the moon several months in 2025.
Some of the disc-shaped objects were estimated to measure between 15 and 25 miles across.
In a new study that has not been peer-reviewed, the team said they identified two categories of UFOs: ‘atmospheric’ objects that appeared stationary and ‘continental’ objects that appeared to move across the moon’s surface.
The objects also appeared to display unusual changes in brightness and rotation.
