There is so much happening in the world these days….the World Cup and Donny’s chaotic handling of Iran…..but the one issue that got my attention was this thing with the reflecting poll on the National Mall.
Donny trying to spruce the pool up for his big day on the 4th has been met with some hilarious outcomes. The draining and painting of the poll did not go as planned….
President Trump says the trouble at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool isn’t just about naturally occurring algae and peeling paint—it’s vandalism. In a Friday Truth Social post, he claimed, without evidence, that “radical” opponents damaged the newly renovated pool and surrounding grass, an apparent reference to a recent incident in which “86 47” was carved into the National Mall lawn, a phrase that critics interpret as a call to oust the 47th president, per the Hill.
Trump said law enforcement is investigating and alleged that chemicals similar to those used on the grass were deployed to harm the pool’s freshly installed interior. The president also claimed that the algae is “75% gone” and that “the condition will soon be completely remedied.” More on the murky scene:
- Citing satellite data, the Washington Post reports that the water in the pool contained more algae than at any other recorded time in June for at least the past five years. “The algae level was among the highest measured in any month in the past two years,” the paper adds.
- Scientists tell NPR they’re not shocked over the development, with one professor of aquatic ecology noting that this type of algae is common in the area at this time of year, with the pool’s shallow, unmoving waters under zero shade providing optimum conditions for algae to thrive. A swimming pool specialist says the new, darker interior put in place during Trump’s renovation may have also contributed, as that darker color would absorb more sunlight.
- Some are worried about one set of visitors in particular: ducks and their babies. Per the Daily Beast, while some experts say that the hydrogen peroxide being dumped into the pool to clear the algae won’t seriously impact the birds if it’s diluted enough, it’s not clear how strong the solution is that’s being used. Some observers have claimed online to have seen dead ducks in the water.
- CBS News has details on the no-bid contract awarded to an Ohio company called Green Water Solutions to install a water filtration system in the pool, with the head of that firm said to be John J. Cafaro, a prominent GOP donor with two past convictions—including one for bribing a member of Congress—who’s has given money “extensively” to Trump’s campaign.
- The lighter side to all of this? The jokes and memes that have been circulating over the green-tinged body of water. BuzzFeed has a bunch.
Now it is those sneaks at antifa that is destroying Donny’s big day….at first you don’t succeed then try again….
The saga of DC’s Reflecting Pool just won’t end. President Trump said Saturday night that he’ll likely have the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool emptied again, after paint began sloughing off the surface and algae appeared just days after a $14 million resurfacing project wrapped up. In a Truth Social post, Trump blamed “disgraceful Vandalism” for the problems and said “many additional people” have been arrested, reports CNN. His claims have not been verified by Park Police. (One person arrested Friday says he reached into the pool to touch a flap of peeling paint but didn’t vandalize anything.)
Trump asserted that vandals “took some form of knife or blade, and put a 250 foot long gash into the beautiful facade.” He also said they “poured corrosive and destructive chemicals” into the pool. Meanwhile, pool specialists tell the Washington Post that the problems look more like preparation or installation failures than sabotage, suggesting improperly treated surfaces or water intrusion under the lining.
This issue is fascinating just how the ‘brilliant’ mind of an idiot works. Taxpayer money to the tune of $15 million+….
In case you would pre4fer more in-depth coverage….I can help….
Sorry but this is the best story in days.
Thoughts?
I Read, I Write, You Know
“lego ergo scribo”
I got the whole thing figured out….the reason the paint is dis-adhering itself from the bottom of the pool is that the bottom of the pool is too old to withstand the chemicals in modern paint and are vomiting it up as fast as it can.
I’m more concerned about the “vandals” this admin has arrested for this. *SMH* Thanks for sharing!
The real story for me is in the bit you cover about the Trump donor and convicted felon getting the $14 million of public money in a no-bid contract. That is corruption in plain view, and charges should be laid against someone for that.
Best wishes, Pete.
Keyword: “SHOULD” be laid ..” Regrettably, with this administration, it’ll never happen. 😠
