I recall back in the days Obama and his push for healthcare the GOP and its minions of stupid kept on and on on the meme of his ideas would create ‘death panels’ and Americans would pay with their lives.
Does anyone else remember those idiot statements?
Well here is one for the d/bags on the Right….those ‘death panels’ may be back.
Since both Sue and I are fighting cancer I keep an eye on the doings that could be news for others that suffer as well…..and news from the Lord High Executioner’s office is not promising.
… all purchasing is frozen using government purchase cards; researchers cannot submit abstracts to meetings or manuscripts to journals; hiring is stopped entirely for 90 days — though it is unclear if that time frame may change — and all job listings must be pulled down; and of course, no external communications at all, and any activity remotely considered DEI-adjacent is stopped.
It is difficult to overstate the damage this can do to both cancer research and treatment. The NCI has around 3,500 employees, and is the largest cancer research funding body in the world. It supports the dozens of NCI-designated Cancer Centers around the country, and helps coordinate clinical trials across more than 3,000 sites. Though the list of prohibitions didn’t necessarily target them directly, there are reports of canceled appointments for patients set to enter some of those clinical trials.
Across NIH, researchers as well as administrators and support staff are some combination of terrified, angry, and confused. One employee told me they simply didn’t know what to do — meaning, literally how to spend the work day — once the commands to stop all purchasing, travel, and more came down. Another source within a different NIH institute said, “I feel like every time we try to keep things moving, we get another directive to stop.” Another pointed out that this will also affect training the next generation of doctors and researchers — interviewing for the NIH’s Graduate Partnership Program, in which graduate students at other universities work in NIH labs, has been suspended, and if that doesn’t lift within a month or so then there will likely be no such visitors next year.

Is this the ‘death panel’ that the GOP warned us about in the past?
Seems to me that there is evidence that it is just that and it is different from the Obama claim because that is examples here and with Obama there was just bullshit.
I will continue to watch and write when something is said or done….our health is important and should not be fucked with in any way by any minor dictator in waiting.
Update: Trump has rescinded the order for there was a major wave of blow back from states and organizations.
But I look for an end run along the same lines just in different language….he has not given up.

This is an interesting throwback to the past indeed. Before the NHS was established in the 1940s, people in Britain had to pay to see a doctor and for hospital treatment. Those people without enough money to do either had to go before a ‘Panel’ who would decide whether or not they could be treated free of charge or basically left to suffer and die. This also applied to being off sick from work and receiving sick pay. People would talk of ‘Being on the panel’ when they were too ill to work. Though this was before my time, it was still talked about into the 1960s. Now our current government is debating whether or not to reintroduce a modern version, by means-testing people and deciding who can afford to pay to see doctors.
Best wishes, Pete.
These are truly death panels….this order has been rescinded….for now. chuq
Every day, in every way, these people continue to demonstrate that they don’t have an effing clue as to what they are doing and they certainly have no idea how a government actually works.
AMEN to that chuq
The only thing this gang of incompetents working under Trump can accomplish is to kill a lot of Americans (see RFK’s plans; see DT’s plans; and so on). They do not care. They are ideologues slavishly carrying the orders of their sociopathic, mentally damaged leader. The American government, as a whole, has become a Death Panel. In fact, assuming this government succeeds in carrying out its death dealing climate and environmental agenda, Trump’s government will be a Death Panel for the entire planet. And let’s remember that this Death Panel has been brought to you by Republicans, by the Republican Party, and by the delusional Christian establishment.

Great comment and I agree completely chuq
The lowest cost Obama health care plan (Copper Plan) was a choice for low income or young people “that don’t get sick much” as Obama worded it . However, the coverage was so limited and with $8,000 to $12,000 co-pay few could afford it so was not worth it. So that really was a “death panel” arrangement. Who would waste money for such health care that offered hardly anything at all but yet Barry O boasted millions now had health insurance because of Obamacare. The Biden’s “death plan” which diverted medicaid from actual Americans and their needy kids for illegals was the Biden “death plan” which still flourishes in sanctuary states and cities.
Carl….Medicaid is for Americans and is not used by states for illegals….still bad mouthing Obama and nothing about what was trying to do….you are getting predictable. chuq
My 12-Step program expects me to promptly admit it if I was wrong re matters of substance. “My statement about illegals getting Medicaid is incorrect.” Also, I may have but I don’t recall ever badmouthing Barry O on this blog. If I have, then obviously I have. I do not apologize for badmouthing Barry O elsewhere. .
I do not mind badmouthing Obama for I did so
on some of his policies and still do….it is just some of the stuff in-line is hearsay and conspiracy especially when the attacks are on this program or that….I have no problem with you badmouthing anyone you like. chuq
I am going to make an assumption here and it is only an assumption because I have nothing to base it on except gut instinct and a little paranoia. —— I am going to assume that a “Greater America” must be an America of only the finest minds and the fittest of people. Is this too hypothetical?
I think it is more like ‘Greater America” is for the wealthy…..period. chuq
What I was suggesting rather subtly was I am afraid that sooner or later somebody is going to decide who is undesirable and who is not and start planning to rid the country of the undesirables….meaning opposing opinions, disabilities, educators, scientists, the elderly, the halt and the lame, the diseased….you know what i mean?
That would be me….and I have always relished a challenge…..chuq
