New Strain of Fact-Resistant Humans

I am always on the lookout for stories that my readers may find informative or at least entertaining…..and I believe I have found a good one for this Sunday.

There has been a lot of reports about this site of that that passes off “fake news” as accurate….and then there will always be those comments about “facts”…how do you know that the “facts” you get are accurate….I would go into this situation but I have tired myself out debating this situation in the recent past…..

While reading different sites I cam upon this story in The New Yorker…and the title alone made me sit up and want to read it…….

Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans who are threatening the ability of Earth to sustain life, a sobering new study reports.

The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.

“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists who contributed to the study, said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”

This situation seems to get worse with each passing election…..facts are NOT facts if they do not conform to what the person wants to believe…..

Time to bow out and enjoy the rest of my weekend and I suggest that everyone should try to do the same….life is too short without any enjoyment…..

Peace….out….my friends.

  1. I live in a sea of such people. When confronted with an undeniable lie spoken by Trump, they tell me “…but he speaks his mind” or “I don’t trust” (because it doesn’t conform to their version of the “truth”, i.e. the lie Trump spoke…). It’s maddening!

It reminds me over and over of this quote”:

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.
    William G. McAdoo

  2. It’s not a new “Strain” but is the result of the “Strain” that has been put on the Race by those who are only comfortable with facts when they compliment the comfort zone. And this is a legitimate reaction because History has shown that facts can change over the course of time. Example: It was once a fact that no invention of mankind would ever be able to achieve excape velocity to pull free of earth’s gravity — and another evolving fact is almost anything to do with medicine. Years ago it was a fact that ingesting cholesterol by eating more than an egg a week would lead to cholesterolic buildups that could be fatal … that has since been found to be (Not a fact any longer). It was once a “Fact” that the Earth was flat and if you went too far out to sea you fell off the Earth. (That fact is no longer a fact.) — Facts change. Facts are written in stone only to the extent somebody wants to believe them and convinces a lot of other people to believe them. Facts are transient, changeable, undependable. It is not a new strain of Human Being … it is a new fact “About” Human Beings.

    1. Well, yes, facts can change over time. Yet that’s not the purpose in valuing facts. Facts (in a perfect world) are a CURRENT status of affairs from which we can base current or future actions. So to dismiss facts because they might be forever changing seems a bit… self-serving?

      1. Yet there are some obtuse individuals who will always maintain that “Facts” are irrevocable and constant no matter how much circumstances change. The stone-headed who suffer from locked-in-thinking will never admit that “Facts” can change.

  3. I don’t suppose you follow my blog, but I wrote a “philosophical” piece recently on there about facts. One could address your article with utmost levity, or actually quite seriously. Things are changing all around us due to the Internet mostly, and also due to more discoveries in quantum physics and well, facts are becoming a strange commodity. However, there are still “perfectly good” facts all around, such as, a cat is not a dog, however you may want to believe so. (And I’m sure cat lovers will be happy to read that!). I’m sure that’s the kind of facts the article refers to when it talks about fact resistant humans. I think most of these fact resistant humans can be found in mainstream media these days.

  4. Five haiku/closing thoughts…

    Humans are more, and less
    than completely sane.
    Plumb crazy folks.

    Words are taken for
only how they seem, not as
    what more they might be.

    runs wild without discipline.
    Foreign to most of us.

    Reality makes
its own rules, no matter how much
    we try to change it.

    I find it funny
in a poignant sort of way
    as we seek our doom.

    gigoid, the dubious

      1. In this case, the question was for the commenters, not you. I know you better than to ask that…. I just wondered how many did actually go look at it before opening their excuses for a mind to comment…

Plus, you don’t challenge the definition of ‘facts’, the damn silliest way to argue, by picking at semantics rather than meaning….the mark of those to whom it is more important to feel right than it is to BE right.

  5. It was obvious satire, even without “fact checking” the piece, but too good an opportunity to talk about facts to pass up. We had fun didn’t we?

  6. If I was home right now, I’d be putting one of the Peter Sellers’ “Pink Panther” movies in the DVD player, because these days every time I see the word “facts,” Clouseau’s accent pops in my head saying “Facts, Hercule, facts.”
Though he was an idiot, he knew what it was all about: the facts. It’s just his immediate conclusions were ridiculous as hell (especially in “A Shot in the Dark”–that was hilarious!)
