There Are Idiots And Then There Is Mississippi

I have not been the kindest person to the Mississippi state government, my state, they pretend and promise so much and deliver nothing……I guess we could say that about a lot of politicians but Mississippi can take the prize…….every politician in the state ran on an education promise and it has been that way for 40 years and yet the state still has one of the worse educational records in the country and yet the voter keeps believing the lie…….maybe that is a good indictment of their educational standards.

The latest session just started and has already made the news……

By Jerry Mitchell, Clarion Ledge

More than a half century ago, Mississippi created a state Sovereignty Commission to block enforcement of federal laws.

Now two key state lawmakers are introducing legislation to attempt to do much the same thing. House Bill 490 would create a committee to help neutralize federal laws and regulations “outside the scope of the powers delegated by the people to the federal government in the United States Constitution.”

Robert McElvaine, professor of history at Millsaps College, said all this bill will accomplish is to put Mississippi up for ridicule. “ ‘The Neutralization of Federal Law’?” he said. “I am astounded to see such a measure introduced in the 21st century. Do the authors of the bill see Mississippi as part of the United States?”

He pointed out that the issue of state sovereignty “was settled by a terrible war 150 years ago as well as by numerous Supreme Court decisions.”

Are you really surprised?  No matter what law is enacted in DC there will always be a movement to circumvent it by the states and always it is under the pretext of the 10th amendment…….a contrarian’s favorite part of the Constitution.  Really does not matter which political group is in power….it is always the 10th that is used to justify any and all opposition to Washington…….

But wait!  There is more from  the great state of Mississippi…..

(Newser) – Mississippi has officially ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution—a mere 148 years after the amendment outlawing slavery cleared Congress and was sent to state legislatures for approval. Mississippi’s legislature voted to ratify the amendment in 1995, but it never became official because the state never notified the United States Archivist, the Clarion-Ledger reports. The oversight was cleared up after a doctor saw the movie Lincoln and did some research into when different states had ratified the slavery ban.

The doctor—a recent immigrant from India—and a colleague contacted state officials, who sent in the paperwork to finally make ratification official. The next-to-last state to ratify the 13th Amendment, Kentucky, did so in 1976. “We’re very deliberate in our state. We finally got it right,” says state Sen. Hillman Frazier, the Democrat who introduced the resolution to ratify the amendment in 1995. It passed the Mississippi Senate and House unanimously, with some lawmakers abstaining.

Better late than never….I guess…….I bet you thought it was a done deal…the banning of slavery……..now you see why I say, “if you visit Mississippi set your watch back 150 years”…….goes to show what happens when no one is watching….

  1. It appears that being deliberately dead last in your state is on equal footing with being deliberately stupid in my state of Texas. These deficiencies are worn as badges of honor by such troglodytes.

    1. Larry, Mississippi is an original well of stupid! Until 10 years ago multi-racial marriages were not legal…..and if a man fathered more than 3 kids out of wed lock it was a misdemeanor….just a look at the backwards thinking in my state…

  2. The Sovereignty Commission was created after the Supreme Court desegregated schools. It became an intelligence agency for white supremacists. Those days are long gone. The purpose of this bill is to neutralize any unconstitutional gun-control measures. It would give Mississippi the ability to reject any federal law, but let’s be honest, this is about gun-control.

Conservative states are worried. ObamaCare was rammed down their throats, and now liberals are peddling gun-control. How did you think this was going to play out? Do you guys expect conservatives to simply lay down and take it? Keep dreaming.

This isn’t much different from a bill in the Michigan House right now. Like Mississippi’s, it would neutralize any federal gun-control measures that are deemed unconstitutional by our Attorney General. Michigan is run entirely by Republicans, so there’s no doubt the law will pass.

Mississippi is trying to reinforce the Tenth Amendment. You should be happy, Lobotero, they’re sticking up for the Constitution.

    1. I figured you would see it that way……then why not disband the US Constitution and let all the states go their separate ways? It would be moronic but that is what they want……if you do not like a law then ignore it….

      1. Lobotero,

The motivation of Mississippi Republicans is to protect the Constitution from Democrat assaults. Like it or not, we have a right to bear arms. LIke it or not, the powers not delegated to the United States Government by the Constitution are reserved to the States and to the People.

Nobody can reasonably argue that ObamaCare is anything but unconstitutional. And I don’t care what the Supreme Court says. The Supreme Court is not infallible. Besides, Roberts was either blackmailed, cajoled, or mesmerized into siding with the liberal wing of the Supreme Court. If there’s no dirt to dig up and nobody promised him anything, then the only possibility is that he’s mesmerized with the imaginary stature of the Supreme Court as an institution, which he feels compelled to protect. Those are the only possible reasons a strong conservative like Roberts would come to such a scandalously asinine conclusion. The Constitution does not grant the federal government the authority to mandate a purchase of a particular product. Period.

I applaud conservatives for standing on principle, protecting the Constitution, and rejecting Obama’s attempt to remake this nation in his image. Screw Obama.

      2. Terrance, SCOTUS decides what is unconstitutional, not you or your support groups……if you cherish the constitution then you will agree with that…..and because you do not agree with Roberts does not make him wrong….but if you can find evidence of what you accuse him of then I suggest that you contact the proper officials…..Roberts is a tool, I will agree but we will have NO other type of justice as long as they are partisan and picked for their political leanings……

You know there was more to my post than that one part? Just thought I would mention that…..

  3. Lobotero,

The Supreme Court cannot will the constitutionality of a thing into existence. If something is unconstitutional, it is unconstitutional whether enforced or not. Dred Scott, for example, should have been freed. It was unconstitutional to enslave him, but that didn’t matter to the Supreme Court, who, by fiat, decided the Constitution didn’t apply to him. They were wrong. Even our Founding Fathers expressed something close to embarrassment after realizing their hypocrisy. They knew the Constitution, if interpreted correctly, applied to African-Americans.

Similarly, the Supreme Court’s decision on the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act was wrong. Roberts knew it was unconstitutional, but ignored it – for whatever reason.

You don’t need a court full of Harvard and Yale graduates on this one. You need only read the Constitution! Once you’ve done that, you come to the obvious conclusion that ObamaCare is unconstitutional, regardless the opinion of five educated morons.

Yes, I know that wasn’t the only part of your post…I read the rest of it. What do you want me to say? That the South has a history of racism? Okay, they do! Everyone knows that.

    1. There is the point…NO one cares what SCOTUS has to say until it agrees with their point of view…..it was put in as the referee….we either want them to interpret it in the strictest sense or loosely…..if they do that then it must be done in one fashion or the other…..

  4. Confederate Anthem by Johnny Rebel

Oh, I’m a good ‘ol rebel.
Now that’s just what I am.
    And for this Yankee nation,
I do not give a damn.

I’m glad I fought against her.
    I only wished we’d won.
    I ain’t asked any pardon
    For anything I’ve done.

    I hates the Yankee Nation
    And everything they do.
    I hates the Declaration
    Of Independence too.

    I hates the glorious union,
    ’tis dripping with our blood.
    I hates the stripped banner
I’ve fit it all I could

I rode with Robert E. Lee
    For three-years, thereabout.
    Got wounded in four places
and I starved at point lookout.

    I caughts the rheumatism
    Camping in the snow.
But I killed a chance of Yankees
and I’d like to kill some more.

300,000 Yankees is stiff In Southern Dust.
We got 300,000 before they conquered us.
    They died of Southern Fever
    and Southern Steel and Shot.
I wish there were 3 million
    Instead of what we got.

I can’t take up my musket
And fight ’em now no more
But I ain’t gonna love ’em
    Now that is certain sure.

And I don’t want no pardon
For what I was and am.
    I won’t be reconstructed
And I do not give a damn.

Oh, I’m a good ‘ol rebel.
Now that’s just what I am.
    For this Yankee nation,
I do not give a damn.

I’m glad I fought against her.
    I only wished we’d won.
    I ain’t asked any pardon

The anti-federal government mentality on display in Mississippi is understandable when you hear songs like this one. You know as well as I do that many Southerners feel this way, Lobotero. That’s why the song was written! It appeals to a certain group of people.

But you’re attributing all anti-federal attitudes to a Civil War and racist mentality, which I think is folly. In this case, I happen to believe that Mississippi Republicans are truly concerned that the federal government is overreaching.

    Isn’t that possible?
