We all have heard about all the trouble in the Middle East, Yemen, Bahrain, Egypt and to a lesser extent, Iraq….but we in the West are fixated on Libya….why? He is a bad man and we do not like bad men…at least that is the current feeling….even though he may not be as bad as some of our friends, but that is for another post…….
Many European countries are calling for a “No Fly” zone around Libya as to protect the revolting population and civilians….France, among others have called such an action…..and even here in the US some of the politicos standing in front of mics at the capital have also called for it…….and I have one question……Are you people smoking crack?
The Idea is a good one…that is to prevent the Libyan Air Force from using its might against its own people….but being a good idea does NOT make it a good idea!
May I see a show of hands of the people that understand what a “no fly” zone actually does?
OK, to enforce a no fly zone, the first thing that MUST be done is to destroy all known anti-aircraft installations and then, only then can a no fly zone be enforced…..here is the rub for you…that means we must have a military op against Libyan soil….to put it more simply…..we MUST ATTACK Libya!
Now how is that for a BAD idea? We are already fighting and dying in two countries and now these hawks want us to attack another Arabic country…how do you think that will play out in the world?
Why are so many Reps willing to commit US service people to another war? How will this profit the US? Why would anyone propose a far reaching, irresponsible and deadly action?

No, you don’t have to destroy all known anti-aircraft installations UNLESS the US has been selling really high tech weaponry to Gaddafi – HAVE you? Does anyone outside the Pentagon know? What are they all scared of?
What you are quoting is the meathods used against Iraq, but missiles aboard one of your wonderful super-carriers could robably do the same. After the first half a dozen Libyan aircraft shot down the airforce there would, I suspect, refuse to take off – job done.
I know it’s not quite as simple as that, but THAT is ALL the Libyan rebels want – a reasonably level playing field. WE supported this shit as he murdered and pilaged the country AND supported terrorism against the West – especially the US – don’t we owe them a little bit of help? Libya is and was a far more valid target than Iraq EVER was, since 1992 at least!
We may not have been but Russia and possibly China have been selling to Libya for years….
Like I said it is a good idea but I want someone besides the US to be the bad guy and try to start another war in the Middle East…..
We owe them a lot of assistance…I just do not see it coming to any good if the US is the one to start it…..the Middle East is NOT the friendliest area to the US….
Or to ANY of the West. But in fact the UK and many others are talking about it – as you said yourself.
ONE thing, though, we should do THAT and ONLY that and then pull WAY back – it’s what the people have asked for and we should oblige from the greatest distance possible – and that most significantly means YOU in the US because you have put yourself in that position of dominance over the last century or more. If YOU and WE don’t do it, who else? Aapart from perhaps the Chinese – how is that better?
I believe the Chinese are out……I just think that it is a bad idea for the US to actually do the deed…we have enough trouble with our image in the area…..
Maybe, but your image is only good with the wrong people (IMO). Limited, arm’s length assistance (which could even be seen as “humanitarian”) provided for basically “moderate” Arab people might well earn the US several hundred brownie points (if that’s not an English expression). BUT, it would have to be EXTREMELY limited and VERY temporary, as I’ve said…
I believe it would be a PR nightmare for the US in the Arab world……but something needs to be done and I think that moving the ships into the area may offer the opportunity for an excuse…kinda like the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam……
I do agree, although I imagine Gaddafi would assume they’re there to help HIM!
If he gets frisky and sends a recon mission out,,,,we could use that as an excuse to “protect” our ships and take out the AA batteries….he is delusional and a bit whacky so anything is possible….
