Americans Killing Americans

Closing Thought–16Nov18

Just a few days ago I read a report on a post I did about a year ago…..a story about Americans killing Americans in the West African nation of Mali….https://lobotero.com/2018/11/13/more-on-the-death-in-mali/

That post contains references to all my past posts on this situation…..

It appears that the US Navy has decided to press charges on 4 members of the special ops team operating in Mali……charges ranging from felony murder to obstruction of justice……

Four members of the US armed forces are facing a slew of charges in connection to the 2017 death of an Army Green Beret in the African nation of Mali. Among the charges leveled against Petty Officer Anthony E. DeDolph and Chief Petty Officer Adam C. Matthews, both members of SEAL Team Six, and two unnamed Marine Raiders are felony murder, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, burglary, hazing, and involuntary manslaughter, the Daily Beast reports. Officials say the SEALs and Marines broke into the room of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar at embassy housing in Bamako in June 2017, restrained him with duct tape, and put him in a chokehold, strangling him while “perpetuating a burglary,” NBC reports. The SEALs reportedly tried to resuscitate the 34-year-old Melgar and also tried to open an air wave by opening a hole in his throat.

According to the Daily Beast, which has reported extensively on the case, there was an “ongoing disagreement,” between Melgar, who was part of a six-person intelligence team, and the SEALs “over the SEAL’s professionalism.” Sources say the SEALs would bring prostitutes to the house and were stealing cash meant to recruit local informants. “The place ran like a frat house,” a source told the site. The SEALs and Marines hatched the plot to haze Melgar on June 4, 2017, while the latter was at an embassy party, and attacked him around 5am. They ultimately took Melgar to a medical facility, where he was declared dead. Later, the four engaged in a cover up, per the Military Times, including sharing information about what they told investigators, withholding information from investigators, and getting rid of alcohol kept in the room.

Maybe now the family of the Green Beret will get the answers they deserve…….

There is more bad news for the SEALs……in the past few months reports keep coming out that there is a discipline problem in the organization…..but first my post from a few months ago….

https://lobotero.com/2018/10/26/socom-you-have-a-problem/

https://lobotero.com/2018/10/19/its-about-the-discipline/

It seems that a bunch of SEALs have gotten caught up in a war crimes investigation……

Military officials are prepared to call nearly a dozen past and present Navy SEALs to testify in the case of one elite Navy commando accused of fatally stabbing an Islamic State detainee in Iraq last year, according to documents obtained by Navy Times.

The records related to the Naval Criminal Investigation Service’s probe offer new insight into the probe that will be aired publicly when the case against Special Operations Chief Edward “Eddie” Gallagher goes to an Article 32 hearing Wednesday morning in San Diego.

The documents suggest that military officials have obtained cellphone text conversations showing Gallagher allegedly sought to cover up the fatal stabbing. The records also show that a different special operator may be acting like a mole for federal investigators by attempting to talk to another petty officer who has lawyered up and invoked his right to silence.

This is what you get when individuals believe the hype of invincibility…..to believe that any action is acceptable when you are the “best of the best”…..

More On The Death In Mali

A year ago I wrote a post on the mysterious death of a green Beret at the hands of SEALs…..I was appalled at the killing of Americans by Americans….we have enough enemies in the world we do not need to kill each other……then a report came out in a coupe of South American newspaper about the investigation into this death……I wrote…..https://lobotero.com/2018/11/07/suspicious-death-in-mali/

Four days after I read the report an American publication picked up the story…the Army Times……

A Navy admiral will now determine whether two SEALs will face charges in the strangling death of an Army Special Forces staff sergeant last year in Mali.

More than a year after the incident, the Navy’s criminal investigation into the death of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar, 34, has concluded and been turned over to Rear Adm. Charles Rock, commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia, as reported by the U.S. Naval Institute.

Rock was appointed by Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer to oversee the case, according to USNI.

Capt. Greg Hicks, the Navy’s chief spokesman, told the New York Times that Rock would “review all relevant information pertaining to Staff Sergeant Melgar’s death and make determinations regarding administrative or disciplinary actions as appropriate.”

Basically the same story as the one I read four days earlier……I wish I had more to write about but I wanted to make sure that my readers were aware that an American publication had picked up the story…..

Hopefully this family will get the answers and the satisfaction they deserve…..

Suspicious Death In Mali

I have a loyal reader from Brazil and I was searching the new for some story on the new government that is taking control….and I was diverted by an American story that did not make our news.

Over a year ago I wrote a couple of posts about the death of US Army Green Beret at the hands of a couple SEALs in deployment in the West African country of Mali……https://lobotero.com/2017/11/20/death-of-a-green-beret/  (please read the previous posts for more detail)

There has been very little about this investigation into the death of the Green Beret…..and thanx to the midterms it would go unnoticed but fortunately I found the story while reading a Brazilian newspaper……

Seventeen months after a Green Beret died in unusual circumstances in Mali, the U.S. Department of Defense is no closer to disclosing the circumstances of his death or whether charges should be laid against any individual or individuals.

Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar was killed at a house he shared with two U.S. Navy SEALS and two Marine Raiders, who were part of the same small joint special operations unit attached to the U.S. Embassy in Bamako, the Mali capital.

oth the SEALs, Petty Officer Antony DeDolph and Chief Petty Officer Adam Cranston Matthews gave investigators conflicting stories as to what had happened leading up to the time of Melgar’s death, the circumstances and the cause. Their stories also kept changing. Initially they took Melgar to a medical clinic and told staff there they had found him in the condition he was in, and that DeDolph, a martial arts expert, had tried to revive him by doing an emergency tracheotomy.

Subsequently the pair said DeDolph had been sparring with Melgar in a late night, drunken incident, he accidently choked the soldier. The problem with story is that Melgar didn’t drink. The Medical Examiner found no traces of alcohol or drugs in his body.

It is a shame that all the midterm speculation was far more important than the death of an American soldier….a needless death…..

It was also reported in an Argentine newspaper as well…..but not so much here where the man lived.

IST hopes that the family gets the answers they deserve and not some PR BS to save face……

SOCOM You Have A Problem

Looks like the US Navy SEALs are becoming a problem in the discipline department……while I has recovering in the hospital news came out that a couple of Special Ops troopers, SEALs, had  killed a US Army Green Beret in Mali……https://lobotero.com/2018/01/13/death-in-mali-2/

(I was surprised that the reaction I got on the original post was “who gives a shit”….so sad that it meant very little to the people.)

I said that it was shameful to have Americans killing each other (I do not believe that the War on Terror meant killing each other)…..

More news comes out that two SEALs have been charged with war crimes…..first SEAL charged……

Charged earlier this month with multiple war crimes in connection with the 2017 stabbing death of a detainee in Iraq, Special Operations Chief Edward “Eddie” Gallagher vows to fight for his freedom.

The 19-year Navy veteran has hired two high-powered criminal defense attorneys who specialize in military law — Colby Vokey of Dallas and Phillip Stackhouse of San Diego — and he’s exploring a civil rights lawsuit against Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents for alleged misconduct linked to his Sept. 11 arrest and detention in San Diego’s Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar.

An Article 32 hearing with a special military judge sent from Florida will begin to sift through the evidence against Gallagher on Nov. 14 in San Diego, according to Stackhouse.

Then news came out that a second SEAL was being charged with war crimes for the death of a detainee…..

Authorities in California on Thursday charged a second Navy SEAL in connection with an ongoing war crimes probe tied to the alleged stabbing execution of an Islamic State detainee in Iraq last year.

Although he wasn’t present during the alleged homicide near the Iraqi city of Mosul in 2017, Lt. Jacob “Jake” Portier faces an upcoming Article 32 hearing for what authorities say was his help in covering up a string of war crimes committed by an enlisted SEAL leader, Special Operations Chief Edward “Eddie” Gallagher.

Accused of dereliction of duty, the highly decorated Portier insists he’s innocent and his high-profile San Diego-based civilian defense attorney, Jeremiah J. Sullivan III, believes he’ll be exonerated as merely the officer who received the allegations of Gallagher’s misconduct from a lead petty officer and reported them up the chain of command.

https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2018/10/23/second-seal-arrested-in-war-crimes-probe/

These are just allegations of wrong doing…..but the sad part is the SEALs are not claiming responsibility…..and say that they do not have a discipline problem….I also posted on that claim as well….https://lobotero.com/2018/10/19/its-about-the-discipline/

It is just sad that they, the SEALs, are in denial…..plus we should expect more out of our supposedly “elite” troops….the best of the best….as they like to claim.

These are the problems we know about and as they say it is a good possibility that it goes so much deeper.

It’s About The Discipline

In the past there have been a couple of reports about SEALs acting less than honorable…..one was the dispute on who fired the shot that killed Osama and the other is an alleged killing of a Green Beret in Mali (since found a wall of silence)…..but to help out my two posts on these incidents…..

https://lobotero.com/2014/11/10/squabbling-seals/

https://lobotero.com/2018/05/17/death-among-the-scrub/

I bring this up because of something I have recently read…..there seems to be a disciplinary problem with the SEALs and of course it has been refuted….

A Naval official has stepped forward to refute the accusation……

The Navy Department’s second-highest civilian leader says a recent string of alleged misconduct in the naval special warfare ranks is not indicative of a wider cultural problem in the elite community.

Navy Undersecretary Thomas Modly told reporters Thursday that while service leaders are concerned about recent high-profile allegations of wrongdoing in the Navy SEAL community, there’s nothing that “is indicative of a cultural problem.”

“We’re a huge enterprise and so, as a huge enterprise, we have problems just like every other huge enterprise,” he said at a Defense Writers’ Group event in Washington. “So when these types of problems arise, we have very, very good processes to go through a legal adjudication of them, and I think we do that very well.”

Over the last six months, 10 SEALs were booted from the service after testing positive for drugs, two senior leaders were relieved following allegations of sexual misconduct, and reports broke that an operator is in the brig while under investigation after allegedly executing an Iraqi detainee.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/10/04/no-evidence-widespread-seal-disciplinary-problems-navy-official.html

SEALs like all the Special Ops people…they believe their own hype….To me it sounds like there is a problem….maybe it would help if they would stop glorifying these soldiers and the wars they fight……

Just my thought….anyone have one they would like to share?

USAFRICOM–WTF?

What the hell is going on in African Command?  They got 4 special ops troops killed with no air support and  with little knowledge of the bad guys in the region, Niger, to be exact…..and now more questionable deaths this time in Mali….and you will not believe who is involved……..

Nearly five months after a 34-year-old Army Green Beret was strangled to death in his embassy housing in the Malian capital of Bamako, military officials say investigators are looking into whether two members of the Navy’s SEAL Team 6 are involved. Staff Sgt. Logan J. Melgar’s body was discovered June 4 in housing he shared with other Special Operations forces. And while no arrests have been made, the two SEALS were flown out of the country almost immediately afterward and put on administrative leave, the New York Times reports. The SEALs were originally classified as “witnesses,” but that designation was changed to “persons of interest.”

A military medical examiner has ruled the death to be a homicide, sources tell the newspaper. Originally the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command was investigating Melgar’s death, but on Sept. 25 the case was taken over by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which is not releasing details about the investigation or a possible motive. “NCIS does not discuss the details of ongoing investigations,” says a spokesman. The Army has yet to release a statement about the incident. Read the full Times story.

WTF?  Americans killing Americans….explain this one away.

There is something deeply wrong within USAFRICOM…………..time for Congress to pull their heads out of Trump’s ass and demand some accountability.

(Today will be light posting day….got a day full of doctors and such….hopefully will be back to full line up tomorrow….chuq)

Closing Thought–16Aug17

Recently the news came out that a woman had made the cut and could start training as a Navy SEAL….this is good news since a woman had finished Army Ranger school….and since the new thing that women were allowed into the combat arts I say why not?

This was my post on this news….

Source: Closing Thought–25Jul17 – In Saner Thought

Since I reported this news more has come out on this young lady……

The woman on track to become the first female Navy SEAL officer has voluntarily exited the training pipeline, multiple Naval Special Warfare Command sources have confirmed to Task & Purpose.

The female midshipman, identified by Military.com in July as a ROTC junior at an unnamed U.S. college, was the elite SEAL Officer Assessment and Selection (SOAS) program’s first female entrant since the Department of Defense lifted restrictions on female applicants for combat arms and special operations forces roles in 2016.

Had she completed the three-week course, she would have been eligible for review by the NSW officer community manager and officer selection panel in September and, if selected, received orders by October to report to NSW’s grueling 24-week Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training course.

Sad news for this young lady….but I am sure that some mindless Neanderthal will find this good news…you know the type that think women should be bare foot and pregnant….in short a Trump supporter.

She has the option of trying again at a later date….maybe do some work to be better prepared for the next attempt.

Closing Thought–25Jul17

Life Imitating Art!

Anybody recall a movie in the 90’s starring Demi Moore, G I Jane?

It is about a woman that takes on SEAL training to become the first female SEAL….well Bat Man we have that woman and her name is not Demi….

A big first for the US Navy: The branch has its female SEAL candidate. A second woman is a candidate to become a special warfare combatant crewman, another elite special operations job previously open only to men. “They are the first candidates that have made it this far in the process” since the Pentagon opened front-line combat positions to women more than a year and a half ago, a spokesperson for the Naval Special Warfare Command tells NPR.

The women, who have not been identified, still need to get through Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, which is grueling; they will need to complete the same training a man would. The spokesperson says it could still “take months and potentially years” before we see the first woman graduate from the SEAL or SWCC program. In another first for SWCC, a spokesperson for Naval Special Warfare Command confirms to Military.com that a petty officer recently informed their chain-of-command they identify as transgender.

Why not?  A woman made it through the rigorous training of the Rangers….the SEALs are next.

Any thoughts?

My day is done…stick a fork in me…..see you guys tomorrow….stuff aplenty….chuq

Assassinate, Assassinate…..Dance To The Music

Can anyone recall where you were when you heard the news of the death of Osama?  And then the idolizing of the SEAL Team that brought the number one terrorist down, SEAL Team 6.

Then recently there was a story by Sy Hersch about the team and its glorified story……some say it is not at all true……and others seem to think that it makes a lot of sense……

But as they always say….it is only the tip of the iceberg…….

The killing of Osama bin Laden made SEAL Team 6 the stuff of legends, but a New York Times report says the special-ops unit has “transformed … into a global manhunting machine,” with troubling claims that the once-elite team is now being overused for day-to-day death missions, carries out unnecessary civilian killings, and is almost impossible to keep tabs on, given its uber-secret status; the US government doesn’t even publicly recognize its Team 6 name (it is officially the Naval Special Warfare Development Group). Oversight by the Joint Special Operations Command also appears lax, at best. “JSOC investigates JSOC, and that’s part of the problem,” an ex-military officer experienced in special ops says. Notes a Syracuse University expert on national security law: “If you’re unacknowledged on the battlefield, you’re not accountable.”

The report is gruesome at times, citing stories of troops sneaking into militants’ homes and killing them as they sleep, making sure they “slice and dice every major artery” to ensure death, and taking out civilians during undercover missions with the CIA. Critics say Team 6, trained to carry out the riskiest operations, shouldn’t even be involved in some of these smaller-scale missions. “The most highly trained force in the world, chasing after street thugs,” one ex-unit member scoffs. Former Sen. Bob Kerrey notes “they have become sort of a 1-800 number anytime somebody wants something done.” And the Times notes more unit members have died over the past 14 years than in all years prior. “War is not this pretty thing that the United States has come to believe,” a retired senior member of SEAL Team 6 tells the Times. “It’s … one human being killing another human being for extended periods of time.” (Read the entire Times piece.)

Back in the day, the 1970’s, the CIA was ass deep into regime change in other countries to include assassination…….Pres. Ford came to office and wanted to change things……..

Gerald Ford’s 1976 executive order on foreign intelligence activities (issued after the disclosure that the CIA had plans to do in Fidel Castro) explicitly prohibits government employees from engaging in “political assassination.” This certainly rules out killing heads of state through covert means……..

This EO proved to be a pain in the butt for Reagan and his desire to rid the world of “Mad Dog Qaddafi”……..and like everything dealing with lawyers….legal-ese makes anything possible…….

Then in 2001 GW made it a little more murky……..

The 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against Terrorists, a congressional resolution that grants the president the right to use “all necessary and appropriate force” against those who helped commit the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, arguably licenses the CIA to go after terrorists with impunity.

Now the argument is whether terrorism is a war or not……after all it is called “WAR ON TERROR”…..that should answer the question….in a commonsense way.

Now the question still remains……Is the Federal government sanctioning assassination?

My answer is YES….it never stopped!

The Real “Zero Dark Thirty”?

Do remember where you were when you heard the news that bin Laden had been killed?

Since that day there have been numerous documentaries about the event……the Seal Team Six has become a national hero….Hollywood has made a fortune from telling and re-telling the story…..and TV has glorified the work by the CIA and others to locate and kill the world’s number one terrorist…….the long arduous hours of data collection and analysis.

But as with most everything that has been done of late was it mostly propaganda?

A lengthy new report by the investigative journalist Seymour Hersh turns the official account of Osama bin Laden’s assassination on its head. In the London Review of Books, Hersh writes that the US didn’t, as it has said, discover bin Laden’s location through couriers. Instead, top Pakistani generals knew where bin Laden was—in fact, as Hersh puts it, “bin Laden had been a prisoner of the ISI at the Abbottabad compound since 2006,” and a Pakistani official revealed the information for a large portion of a $25 million reward the US had put forward in 2001. Hersh bases his report largely on an anonymous source he describes as “a retired senior intelligence official who was knowledgeable about the initial intelligence about bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad.” Obama did order the Navy SEALs raid on the compound, but it didn’t happen the way the White House has said, Hersh writes.

“There was no firefight as they moved into the compound,” the source says. Bin Laden, who was an “invalid,” was simply shot. Ensuing accounts, including President Obama’s speech, provided inaccurate details. Though Obama acknowledged working with Pakistani intelligence, the account by John Brennan, now the CIA head, rejected the idea that Pakistan had any knowledge of bin Laden’s location. Hersh’s report is an “explosive” one, writes Seth Maxon at Slate, but he notes that its trustworthiness is uncertain, “since it mostly relies on the information of a single anonymous source—and because it doesn’t appear in Hersh’s usual venue for blockbuster investigative pieces, the New Yorker.” Business Insider agrees that it “should be viewed with skepticism.” Read it all here.

In case you are curious about this……here is the review from the UK…….

http://www.lrb.co.uk/v37/n10/seymour-m-hersh/the-killing-of-osama-bin-laden

Is this true or is it just another made up story by a nationally known journalist?  Will we ever know the truth about this event?  Are we just celebrating a lie?

What do you think?  Fact or fiction?
