And You Think That The Syrian Conflict Is Confusing

I have written about just how damn confusing the Syrian conflict has become….we have 34 factions fighting…..and we are supporting this one or that…ISIS is supported by this one or that…..Russia is supporting Assad against….well who flipping knows?

I recently wrote a piece for Ace News Room on this situation (linked below if interested)……

Source: Syria: Just How Confusing Can One Conflict Be? – In Saner Thought

I bring this up because I have been watching the situation in Libya and it has become a massive cluster f*ck…….and now the US has decided to wade into the waters of another civil war….we just cannot help ourselves….we f*cked it up and now we have to try and make it worse…..

There are almost as many players in Libya as there are in Syria…..will we chose wisely or will it be just another rewplay of a failed policy?

In Libya there are very few truly national actors. The vast majority are local players, some of whom are relevant at the national level while representing the interests of their region, or in most cases, their city. Many important actors, particularly outside of the largest cities, also have tribal allegiances.

Since the summer of 2014, political power has been split between two rival governments in Tripoli and in Tobruk, with the latter having been recognised by the international community before the creation of the Presidential Council – the body that acts collectively as head of state and supreme commander of the armed forces – in December 2015. Several types of actors scramble for power in today’s Libya: armed groups; “city-states”, particularly in western and southern Libya; and tribes, which are particularly relevant in central and eastern Libya.

How many times can the US make the same mistake before a new strategy is formulated?

Will a new president make any difference?  Can we afford to keep making the same mistakes?

Benghazi–The Way It Was

Benghazi?  You remember that tragic death of the US ambassador to Libya……and with his death a tidal wave of outrage by the GOP in Congress….knowing that Clinton was the SecDef at the time it was the perfect time to build case against her and of course the president…..and so the game began.

The Congress set about having an investigation into the attacks and the deaths…..and the game was a foot…….the Repubs and the Dems at each others throat…day after day….and after years of hearings and recriminations what has the Congress and the nation learned?

It actually is something that the Repubs would like for you NOT to know the answer…….

Two years after a special House committee started investigating the 2012 attack on an American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, the committee has yet to produce a report on its findings. But the political infighting is still going strong.

On Sunday Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Select Committee on Benghazi, sent a scathing letter to the committee’s Republican chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy, complaining of “repeated, unnecessary, and ever-changing demands from the Department of Defense.” Cummings accused Republicans of ignoring statements from their own chief counsel, Lt. Gen. Dana Chipman, a retired 3-star general, who appears to think the U.S. military response on the night of the attack was appropriate.

There is another way of looking at the event……

Source: Democrats: Republican lawyer backs White House on Benghazi | News , World | THE DAILY STAR

Since it is still a thing in DC and since it is still a waste of time and energy……let me leave you with another thought for your consideration….

The games our elected officials play…..and they waste your f*cking money.  Just what you elected them to do, right?

Here’s a thought….how about focusing on the bastards that may have had their fingers in the 9/11 attacks that killed more than the attack in Benghazi…..sorry….just a suggestion.

IST Battlefield Report

My final post of the day is one that every American should care about deeply…..but for some reason they do not seem to care……

Since the media seems to want to ignore the fact that there are US troops fighting in more countries than we can count….I feel someone needs to step up and report the stuff that they want us to forget…..and that person might as well be me.

These reports will be on our major conflicts of Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Libya…..more will be added as needed……

Let’s start with Syria……

Pentagon officials have repeatedly made clear in recent weeks that they are pushing the Obama Administration for further escalations of the ISIS war in Iraq, envisioning a significant increase in ground troops there. Apparently, this doesn’t stop at Iraq.

Officials today confirmed the administration is also considering a massive increase in US ground troops in neighboring Syria as part of the plan, in the form of a large contingent of special forces to be sent to Syria’s northeast.

Exact details are scant, and officials wouldn’t offer any amounts for the number of troops to be sent, beyond saying that there would be “many times” more troops being sent to Syria than are presently there now. Official figures on current numbers are “around 50.”

On to Iraq……

Iraq has been acting like an over-sexed primate about their soon to be victory in Mosul…..But………

Less than a week ago, Iraqi officials were touting a new military offensive against some villages near Mosul as a major sign of progress in the war against ISIS, and their success in taking three villages was proof of ISIS being “in retreat.”

Today that offensive is stalled outright, on the brink of collapse, as low morale has many Iraqi troops leaving their positions, with Kurdish officials who were involved in the fighting saying the army “have no will to fight.

US officials are downplaying the concerns, insisting that the Iraqi troops are performing up to expectations. Locals are complaining that the troops showed up, looted their villages, and then just left, insisting they are no better than ISIS.

You realize what this could mean?  More US Troops to “aid” the Iraqi military…..

What’s happening in Libya?

Further complicating Libya’s status as an ungovernable desert full of warring factions, the UN-backed “unity government,” which was established in January, has finally managed to sneak into Libya, landing in the capital of Tripoli and setting up shop at a naval base.

The “unity government” was the result of tentative agreements between the two existing Libyan governments, though both ultimately rejected the unity cabinet, and the group was quickly relegated to third-place status among governments with little real control.

Local officials blasted the “infiltration” of this new faction into the capital, but the group managed to get to a naval base, and is now one of three governments, two of which are officially “UN-backed,” and which don’t like one another.

The US loudly endorsed the arrival of this new government, and condemned the other governments as “obstructionists” for opposing the group, which itself was formed in Tunis with neither elections nor any real imprimatur from the Libyan people.

Makes me less confident on success when the government has to infiltrate Tripoli under the cloak of darkness.  Just another intervention waiting to happen?

Finally a look at America’s “Forgotten War”, Afghanistan…….

The Obama Administration’s lack of focus on the Afghan War is symbolized by the fact that it is no longer even listed as one of the “Top Issues” on the Department of Defense’s website. It only gets passing attention on the White House’s website—to the point where the “defense” section still refers to the President as having, “ Developed a comprehensive new strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan and authorized deployment of more than 33,000 “surge” troops to Afghanistan”—a statement that dates back to March 27, 2009. Another White House Fact Sheet dates back to May 27, 2004 and is entitled “Bringing the U.S. War in Afghanistan to a Responsible End.”

US Troops still fighting and it is not important enough for anyone to care about?  Typical…..so typical!

There you have your update and please keep reading there will be MORE!

Libya: The War Time Forgot

A few years ago everyone was on-board with the deposing of the Libyan leader, Qaffafi….and since then there have been sporadic reports in the media about the situation in Libya….it has gone from cheers and joy to damn right awful……from bad to worse…..and one of the results of our intervention has been the rise of ISIS in Libya……and because of the rise the US is forced to intervene yet again……

The U.S. and its allies need to step in to help restore Libyan sovereignty.

Source: Use Force to Help Libya – US News

Would that be the old hawkish adage…..”fight for peace”?

But then the question could be asked….is ISIS that big of a threat that the US needs to use intervention to solve?

Analysis: As ISIL is squeezed in Iraq and Syria, Libya has increasingly become a strategic alternative ground.

(Please do not discount the source…..read the article and then make your decision…….)

Once again Libya is a prime example of what US arrogance can produce….regime change was important but not one person had the forethought to look at the consequences of this action…..the US has a hard time learning lessons……

Source: Lost Lessons of Libya | Consortiumnews

This situation will be yet another one of our little wars that burns up resources and cash……especially when the person the US chose to be the leader of Libya is a CIA operative from the 80’s…..that’s right …..he is a CIA plant to run the new Libyan government…..

In 1991, the New York Times reported that 350 exiled “Libyan soldiers were trained by American intelligence officials in sabotage and other guerrilla skills. The plan to use the exiles fit neatly into the Reagan Administration’s eagerness to topple Colonel [Muammar] Qaddafi.” Former Libyan General Khalifa Hifter was the leader of that group, the Libyan […]

Now what part of that plan is for the good of the Libyan people?  Will the leader do the CIA bidding or will he work for the country?

I realize that this is a bit much for the average person to assimilate…..but try it you may just like it……besides when Libya goes to crap you can join me in saying….”I told you so”!

Is The US Going All In?

A conflict that does not get much attention these days in the media is Libya……occasionally there is a quick reference to the rise of ISIS in North Africa….but that is about it……

The problem is….this is a situation of our own creation……..

Nearly five years after the U.S., Britain and France launched a bombing campaign against the Libyan government to bring about regime change, these same countries are contemplating a resumption of the war they thought was won when rebel forces they supported grotesquely tortured to death the country’s leader, Col. Muammar Gaddafi.

No one is laughing in Washington now. President Obama came, saw and created the very opposite of what he sought, a hardly unusual outcome for the Obama and Bush Administrations in the Middle East. Instead of a pliable dependent government willing to do the bidding of Washington and its NATO foreign legion, there has been an explosion of civil war and Sunni jihadism.

Source: Obama Readies To Fight in Libya, Again – Antiwar.com Original by — Antiwar.com

One problem is that the person that the US chose to be the “new” leader is in fact a CIA creation….Col. Haftar……

Would this be the best idea….open another war front that we will have to engage in?

Source: The Pitfalls of Opening a Libyan Front against ISIL | Middle East Briefing

Personally, I think that we should finish one fight before we decide to start another…..our troops are stretched thin….how will we support a new war?

Damn good question, right?

Source: Obama and the Pentagon Plan Massive Military Escalation and the Media Barely Seem to Care | Alternet

Now we come to the payment of this ‘new’ plan…….where will this cash come from?

I am sorry but I want the people to decide who we send our troops to kill…..I want the American people to have a say in this…..but that will not happen….the government and the media are colluding to keep this from the public and to suppress any debate…..

Yes, I am anti-war and I have the best reason for my concern…I participated in a war and I know what the consequences will be…..we are seeing some of it today but it is not well reported and that is the plan…..keep the public in the dark and anything is possible.

Just ask Joseph Goebbels, if he were alive, he would attest to what I am saying…..

Time for Americans to stand up and demand a public debate on the wars we fight and when……time for Congress to stop spending our money without our permission……

It’s Libya Again……..

How many wars are we fighting at this time?  3….4….more?

Since we intervened in Libya to save the people from a “humanitarian crisis”….we have been up to our asses in problems.  We made sure that a country divided along lines…again……it was not enough that we did the same thing to Iraq….nope we had to do it all over again…..so much for having a plan……

In the time since the death of Qaddafi the rise of ISIS and others with similar goals have been on the rise….and why do you think that is?

You can go about blaming whomever you choose but the one common denominator is……the US of A.

Now it seems that Obama has sent heard to his commanders of the Libyan campaign to go after ISIS affiliates…….

With several Pentagon officials, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford and Press Secretary Peter Cook talking up military efforts to lay the groundwork for a US war in Libya, which Dunford suggested would be formalized in several weeks, President Obama is starting to talk up the idea too.

The White House confirmed today that President Obama has ordered his national security advisers to draw up plans to “counter” ISIS efforts to expand in Libya. Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed the move, saying several options are being drawn up.

There is the cute part……”asking the national security advisers” to draw up a plan to counter ISIS”……these are the same people that drew up plans in Syria and we see how well that is working….now don’t we?

You know I think we, the people, should have some say in who and how many years we must fight…….

This escalation is being planned without a meaningful debate in Congress about the merits and risks of a military campaign, the New York Timesnotes. Pentagon officials have not made a case that the proposed military action has achievable goals, and airstrikes could lead to a ground war.

If Congress takes no action, endless war will likely be extended to a new country, without time limit, without restrictions on the use of U.S. ground troops, and without any limit on who can be targeted, even if they have never attacked the United States nor shown any public inclination to do so.

Urge Congress to exercise its responsibilities under the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution by debating and voting on U.S. military escalation in Libya before it happens by signing and sharing our petition:

http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/act/congress-debate-vote-before-new-libya-war

Please take some time and check it out…..then if you agree with me then please consider adding your name to the petition……we must stop this constant interventions where we may not be wanted……I believe enough Americans have been torn away from their families and way too many have died or been injured for NOTHING!

Then there are those that say time is running out on any chances for stabilizing Libya……

Italy’s foreign minister says time is running out to stabilise war-torn Libya as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group is expanding its reach in the North African country.

The warning came as the European nation on Tuesday hosted in Rome representatives from 23 countries who are part of the US-led coalition seeking to prevent ISIL from seizing Libya and targeting the West from across the Mediterranean Sea.

Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Rome, said the coalition was working on a plan for potential air strikes on ISIL positions in the coastal area that stretches from Bin Jawa to the west of Sirte, which lies about 370km east of the capital Tripoli.

I have watched the Libyan saga unfold from the beginning……I am coming to the mind that there was never any intention for a stable Libya……for instance….the “No Fly Zone”……why?  The Libyan air force was not engaged in the fray…….or was the no-fly zone just a cover to commit the airstrikes?  Was this somehow a revenge thing?  Or was it truly to prevent a humanitarian crisis….if it was then what would you call what we help create in Libya?

My best guess is……A Cluster F*ck…F.U.B.A.R.!

US War News….You Seldom Hear

I am always finding news that seems to be left out of our nightly news for whatever reason…..apparently Vietnam taught the government a lesson…..for it was the first TV war……and the last.

The news a couple months ago was that the US would be leaving Afghanistan later this year with only a residual force to remain…..that may be a little short-sighted…..

Top U.S. military commanders, who only a few months ago were planning to pull the last American troops out of Afghanistan by year’s end, are now quietly talking about an American commitment that could keep thousands of troops in the country for decades, The Washington Post reports.

The news agency citing senior military officials say that the shift in mind-set, made possible by President Obama’s decision last fall to cancel withdrawal plans, reflects the Afghan government’s vulnerability to continued militant assault and concern that terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda continue to build training camps whose effect could be felt far beyond the region.  (Read on)

Source: US May Stay in Afghanistan For Decades | World Affairs Journal

Then there is Libya…..not much has been said about this North African country lately….there has been a movie where Hollywood tried to cash in on the attack on our people a few years ago….it was a bomb.  And the hearings are not in the news any more…..but that does not mean that the US has forgotten about the nation…….

The Pentagon is considering fresh military action in Libya more than four years after conducting an air campaign that helped topple dictator Muammar Gaddafi, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Officials are currently “looking at military options” to stop the Islamic State militant group from gaining ground in another oil-rich Mideast nation, said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook.

At present, US efforts in Libya are focussed on identifying local allies to work with, for what a senior military officer has envisioned as a “decisive” confrontation with Isis.  (Read on)

Source: US considering fresh military action in Libya over Isis threat | World news | The Guardian

These should make our Military-Industrial Complex very happy…..use more weapons and they need to replace them…..more wars = more profits….what could possibly be more American than that?

Then a dire prediction from a general………

World War III may be on the horizon, one Swedish general has warned. The country hasn’t been to war in some 200 years, but a top general said that a third World War could come “within a few years,” reported Australia’s News.com.au Thursday.

“The global situation we are experiencing and which is also made clear by the strategic decision leads to the conclusion that we could be at war within a few years,” Major General Anders Brännström wrote in a statement handed out to attendees at an armed forces conference, according to News.com.au. “For us in the army we have to, with all force we can muster, implement the political decisions.”

Source: Swedish general warns: World War III break out ‘within a few years’

Sorry to be such a bummer……but better hear it from me than experience it first hand……

Since The GOP Will Not Move On…..Let’s Talk Libya

Looks like tomorrow will throw Libya back into the news for Clinton will go before the circus that is a hearing…….then guess what?

I bet you will not believe what the big story of this week will be….(pause here for thought)……Benghazi!

Yep, the country’s longest running hearing will once again be foisted into the headlines…….it is Benghazi and the games Repubs play.

After 72 weeks they have NOTHING that can be reported other than they have another session on the books……personally I can think of about 10 items off the top of my head that need attention…..but NOoooooooooooo…..let us beat a dead horse a little longer.

The first point, the a/holes are asking the wrong questions…they should be focusing on why an ambassador that was well aware of the dangers went in light….that is the only question that needs to be asked and the answer will put the rest of the games to bed.

As long as they want to talk about Libya I will oblige……

After four long years just what has been accomplished in Libya….other than an excuse to kill Qaddafi?

After these many years of airstrikes and weapons pouring into Libya and the rise of an ISIS-centric group…..what has actually been the benefit of the situation in Libya?

Libya drifts dangerously to the point of no return as Islamic militants terrorize civilians and two rival governments battle it out.

Source: Four years after Gadhafi, is Libya better off? – Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

Clinton was recently asked if we did the right thing in Libya……..

“Remember what was going on,” she began, repeating a version of events that some intelligence officials and human rights groups doubt. “We had a murderous dictator, Gadhafi, who had American blood on his hands … threatening to massacre large numbers of the Libyan people. We had our closest allies in Europe burning up the phone lines begging us to help them try to prevent what they saw as a mass genocide, in their words. And we had the Arabs standing by our side saying, ‘We want you to help us deal with Gadhafi.’”

She characterized the Obama Administration’s response as “smart power at its best,” saying that while America refused to take the lead in the war, “we will provide essential, unique capabilities that we have, but the Europeans and the Arabs had to be first over the line. We did not put one single American soldier on the ground.”

She then put a positive gloss on the war’s outcome. “I’ll say this for the Libyan people…” she said. “I think President Obama made the right decision at the time. And the Libyan people had a free election the first time since 1951. And you know what, they voted for moderates, they voted with the hope of democracy. Because of the Arab Spring, because of a lot of other things, there was turmoil to be followed.”

(Atlantic.com)

Her answer was a canned political response……if it is all about the Libyan people why did we use the CIA to control the rebels and why was a CIA lackey installed as the military commander…Col. Haftar?

There is a bit she left out of that analysis………..

Clinton’s response obscures a largely forgotten moment in U.S. diplomacy: a period less than two years earlier when she and the Obama administration were actively cozying up to the “murderous” Gadhafi. “I am very pleased to welcome Minister Gadhafi here to the State Department,” she said, warmly greeting Mutassim Gadhafi, the Libyan dictator’s son and national security adviser, at the State Department in April, 2009. “We deeply value the relationship between the United States and Libya.” (You can watch it here.)

Oh….oops…..forgot that part….did we?

Like I said in the beginning of this post….there is so much more to our involvement in Libya than the attack in Benghazi…..while the deaths are truly regrettable….there is so much more to that tale and questions need to be asked…..but as usual the GOP has pushed a point too far……they just do not know when to call it a day…….

The Libya saga is so much more than the one attack….and the American people will never learn the real story….instead they get….games politicians play!

Is it possible that all this hoopla over the Clinton …..could it back fire?

Source: What to Expect When Congressional Republicans Grill Clinton on Benghazi | Mother Jones

Libya is a bloody mess, both literally and physically, and as much as we do not want to admit it……we are to blame after all the finger pointing…..we can look at Libya and say…..”We did that!”

Conflict News #1

The US is up to its butt in conflicts….yet the media has no time to report the news from these battlefields…..nope they had rather give the public mind numbing bullsh*t……like Brady’s balls or some hi-speed chase in Stupidville……or what dilettante musician is doing with his/her time……worthless info that Americans crave…..

I guess it is up to me to give the public the news the MSM never has the nuts to deliver…..all the Conflict News you can use……

1–Pentagon has made a momentous decision that should have been made months ago…..

Though an official announcement on the matter has not been made yet, reports are emerging that the Pentagon has suspended the “train and equip” program intended to create a new faction of “pro-US” Syrian rebels, which has been dubbed the New Syrian Forces (NSF).

If the first class was a failure, the second class was embarrassingly so, with the group almost immediately surrendering its weapons and vehicles to al-Qaeda. Centcom today released further details about the chain of events leading to this surrender.

Better late than never….or so they say.

2–Our war in Libya is not going as well as we had anticipated in the beginning…..Libya has sunk into a deep civil war……but after over 2 years of fighting the combatants have possibly found a way to work together…..

The Western-backed Libyan government in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based government are moving closer to some sort of power-sharing agreement, according to UN officials familiar with the ongoing talks, and have reached a basic “consensus” on the main points of how it will work.

Details aren’t being released on this framework agreement, but both sides are to submit a list of names for possible candidates in key positions in the unity government, including a list of prime ministers who would be agreeable to them.

Is it possible that they found a way to end their conflict without the US?  Would be a new trend if they have…….

3–Now Yemen……Saudis and their Gulf monarch buddies have been pounding Yemen for months and NO one cares…..

The Coalition is meant to be the first exercise of a GCC ‘rapid deployment force’ advised discreetly by Israeli and American officers. Such coordination in the attack of an Arab country is novel. How has this been marketed? The rage provoked by the deaths of the invading GCC forces in Mar`ib suggests that Yemen was dreamt of as a training programme for wars modelled on recent Israeli ones – a war to be determined by aerial bombardment, but without the international outrage at war crimes that Israel suffers.

But the real answer for the silence can be put a better way…….”the GCC can buy a lot of media, weapons, and people.”

4–Remember the “Sunni Awakening” in Iraq……we shortened it to the Surge….a way for the US to deal with the expansion of radicals in Anbar province…..but could such a program succeed in Afghanistan?

Source: Is an ‘Afghan Awakening’ the solution? – Al Jazeera English

5–It seems that ISIS is the number enemy at least for now, of the US….if that is true why has this news not been reported more widely……..

Early reports of ISIS trying to establish an affiliate in Afghanistan were mostly downplayed by the US and other Western powers, who believed the group to be little more than a handful of disaffected Taliban commanders trying to get international attention. That the rare ISIS activity was all fighting against Taliban rivals seemed to support that.

………the latest reports suggest that only about 10% of the ISIS force inside Afghanistan is Taliban defectors, and that the group’s parent organization in Iraq and Syria has sent roughly 70 seasoned commanders to serve as the leadership core of this growing branch.

The ability to recruit Taliban defectors might be growing with the latest leadership disputes in that group, but ISIS’ ability to form an almost entirely new group with so little cross-over with a Taliban insurgency that’s been in place for decades suggests they are resonating with a whole new group of peoples, and could be a hugely complicating matter in the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan

6–Finally…..We are failing against ISIS….could it be that our tactics are well known in advance?

Abu Omar al-Shishani, the red-bearded face of ISIS terror lately described in such headlines as ‘Star pupil’: Pied piper of ISIS recruits was trained by U.S. for the fact that he received American military training as part of an elite Georgian army unit in 2006 and after, did not stop playing for “team America” once he left his home country in the Caucuses. He actually enjoyed US backing and American taxpayer largesse as late as 2013, soon after entering Syria with his band of Chechen jihadists.

7–We have conflicts on top of conflicts…..and that is not the bad news…..

#AceNewsReport – Oct.01: The continuing financing of all US military operations by continuing resolution and not through a proper budget is generating a $38 billion deficit, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

How many more conflicts can the US afford?
