Ukraine, What Say You?

Back when this whole Ukraine/Russia debacle started many of us, including myself, called for there to be some sort of ceasefire to avoid all the death and destruction of a beautiful country…but right on cue the US put the whammy on any such occurrence.

Most of the war hawks did not like the idea that the East of Ukraine would remain in Russian hands….and then Trump came to town and proposed his brand of diplomacy which is now the War Department’s stand as well.

And now we know where the Trump Admin is coming from…..Howdy Doody tries to make it clear….

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday dismissed the idea of NATO membership for Ukraine as part of a peace deal with Russia and said the goal to restore Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders was “unrealistic.”

Hegseth made the comments while addressing a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels. “The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome for a negotiated settlement,” he said.

Hegseth said the Trump administration’s goal is to end the war through diplomacy, which he said must start “by recognizing that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective. Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering.”

Restoring Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders has been a war goal of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, although there have been signs in recent months that he’s accepted that’s unrealistic. But he is still calling for strong security guarantees from the US that involve the deployment of troops, which Hegseth also dismissed.

“Any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops. If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission, and they should not be covered under Article 5,” he said.

“There also must be robust international oversight of the line of contact. To be clear, as part of any security guarantee, there will not be US troops deployed to Ukraine,” Hegseth added.

Hegseth said that the US wanted to reduce involvement in Ukraine to focus on the border and a military buildup in the Asia Pacific aimed at China and claimed Beijing was a threat to the US homeland.

“The United States faces consequential threats to our homeland. We must, and we are focusing on the security of our own borders. We also face a peer competitor in the Communist Chinese with the capability and intent to threaten our homeland,” he said.

An ambitious plan but we will see just how serious these people are when the arms industry kicks in to high gear.

For all those that we against the earlier ceasefire conditions…..I ask….whay say you now?

  1. To qualify myself, chuq… I respect your anti-war stance because you’ve been there… and the villification of the M-IC. I myself find the Ukraine situation a needless and appalling loss of life, just as I do Gaza/Israel. All of it could have been avoided. Also, I can only form my opinion from the standpoint of consuming what’s in the public access as I am not briefed on the secrets. This are the elements I see…

    1. Russia didn’t invade Ukraine, Putin did. This was no ground-swell of Russian public outcry. In fact, the populace had been enjoying the Western economy in their country for years (just look at the oligarchs)… which now has since pulled out. This is Putin’s war.
    2. His “justification” seems to be some demogogery crap about “fearing” a NATO threat directly on his border.. and the usual nationalistic Russian “thing” that Urkaine is a traditional extension of Russia…. and his schemes of returning to some good-old-days of a “Soviet” Russia. There’s enough NATO on his border now for sure due to the fear of HIS threat to other former Soviet countries.
    3. Biden completely vasilated on getting aid to Ukraine when it was needed. He feared an escalation between us and Russia… and grief on the political home front here. Would it have changed from what the situation is now over there? Diplomatically for sure. Unknown on the battlefield. The Russians have always fought wars using WW1 strategy for slaughtering their own… now they grab from North Korea. But it seems their population (mothers) doesn’t much care given their wars.. and massive death… are business as usual.
    4. Generally speaking, you would think over here we might have some level of empathy/sympathy for a democratic Ukraine trying to fight for it’s soverign existence from a foreign invader. In the beginning a number of our own people went over there to help in the fight because of just that. This alone is the entire issue at play… Ukraine is fighting to exist and their people are willing to die for their freedom, and Europe and us are afraid of Russia using nukes so we pussy-foot our joint assistance, and hope for the best. In the meantime Urkraine is getting destroyed and people are dying.
    5. The authoritarian Orange Asshole (and apparently Europe?) seems perfectly fine bowing to Putin and surrendering Ukrainian border lands, and Crimea, to Russia… because that’s what Putin wants to stop killing Ukrainians A too-bad, so-sad to Ukraine, and Putin gets his way. Who’s next?
    6. I personally could be described as a globalist. I feel this is how to maintain a global peace.. and it’s worked for the last 80 years… no nuke wars, no global conflicts, expansion of international trade is good for all. Regional wars are inevitable. This Trumpian bullshit nationalism will go nowhere. We need to be the world leader as we’ve always been… not the world bully. Ugh… this MAGA crap still to this day loves making villians out of half of America. Not even an attempt for unity. We are more divided as ever… and everyone here has a gun… and the lunitics are percolating.

    1. O.K., the peaceniks are going to have their way after all … The United States will stop giving military aid to Ukraine …The United States will agree with Putin that none of the conquered Ukrainian land can be returned to Ukraine…. The parties to any agreement (Putin and Trump) will see to it that Ukraine does not become part of NAT0, in effect surrendering the entirety of Ukraine to the Russians…so the peaceniks can no stop bitching about all the money we have been spending to help ukraine because it is over.

    2. Doug there is so much history with the Ukraine since 1992 and not all of it pretty and the democratic process was equally ugly. That is what MAGA exist on…division and half of America cannot see it….it will be a long 4 years., chuq

  2. Tens of thousands of men, women and children dead, forced out of their homes, forced to flee in terror with nothing but the clothing on their backs, tens of billions of dollars in property damage, tens of billions of dollars spent on weapons, and for what? All so a handful of megalomaniacs can bluster and rant and brag.

    1. True that…..what Trump is offering is what was offered 6 months into the conflict and if it holds so much could have been avoided. chuq

  3. Here we go again. This is all about Trump kissing Putin’s ass, and Hegseth demonstrating his asskissing loyalty to Trump’s overall idiocy, greed, and incompetence, while Ukraine and the people of Ukraine are daily smeared with blood and body parts. Trump and Hegseth have already given away most of their bargaining power over Ukraine (no NATO membership, no return to original borders, no penalties to Russia/Putin). Not that it will make much difference, not with the destruction of the American government and economy continuing and gathering speed at the hands of Trump’s incompetence and his appointment of incompetents. And his giving free reign of destruction to another incompetent, Elon Musk. Musk and Trump are a disease. I would hope that ultimately both of them will be executed for treason.

      1. I haven’t posted there in a long time. I’m considering starting up again there.

  4. I don’t see any realistic possibility of pushing back to the pre-invasion birders. Neither the US or Europe is going to send troops or further escalate the war. Time to face reality and agree on a cease fire.

  5. Did you see the bit where Trump said this.

“Russia took a lot of land, and they fought for that land and they lost a lot of soldiers”, he told reporters later in the Oval Office.

So that’s his justification for giving Putin all the conquered territory and stopping further aid. I am no fan of Zelensky, as you know, but Trump is surely becoming senile already.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. Ukraine will soon be totally dominated by Russia…following that, within the coming two or three years, so will Poland and a few close countries and after about 4 or 5 years a full scale war with NATO. Remember you heard it here first.
