Sanctions! Hit ‘Em Where It Hurts!

Every president that I recall during my many years of age have used the tried and true penalty of sanctions against nations that has pissed the US off.

Sanctions?

Let’s look at just what this entails……https://lobotero.com/2019/03/04/those-inevitable-sanctions/

The reason I touching on this is that our president has decided to hit Iran with more sanctions as a punishment….these are directed at the so-called nuke program that Iran is supposedly developing…..

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), together with the U.S. Department of State, designated 14 individuals and 17 entities today in connection with Iran’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), which has provided support to designated Iranian defense entities and whose key personnel played a central role in the Iranian regime’s past nuclear weapons effort.  This action targets current SPND subordinate groups, supporters, front companies, and associated officials.

“The U.S. government is taking decisive action against actors at all levels in connection with Iran’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND) who have supported the Iranian regime’s defense sector,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.  “The United States will continue applying maximum pressure to the Iranian regime, using all economic tools to prevent Iran from developing weapons of mass destruction. Anyone considering dealing with the Iranian defense industry in general, and SPND in particular, risks professional, personal, and financial isolation.”

And then there are the sanctions against North Korea (a country that has a nuke capability)……

President is reversing his administration’s decision to slap new sanctions on North Korea and ordering them withdrawn. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says Trump “likes Chairman Kim and he doesn’t think these sanctions will be necessary,” per the AP. Trump himself addressed the move on Twitter: “It was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large scale Sanctions would be added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea,” he wrote. “I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!”

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about which sanctions Trump was referring to. However, his administration on Thursday sanctioned two Chinese shipping companies suspected of helping North Korea evade sanctions—the first targeted actions taken against Pyongyang since Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in Hanoi last month. The Hill sees it as “remarkable” that Trump would publicly rebuke his own Treasury Department, especially after national security adviser John Bolton praised the sanctions announced on Thursday. The Washington Post describes the move as an “apparent effort to salvage nuclear negotiations.”

This illustrates just how moronic Trump’s foreign policy truly is…..he emboldens the nation that has a capability and punishes a nation that does not…..

His Neocon cronies….Pompeo and Bolton…..are leading Trump down the primrose path and his lack of comprehension is hurting the US at every turn…..and he, Trump, is too ignorant to see it.

  1. Sanctions always remind me of bully-boy tactics in the school playground. Keeping the ball to themselves, or not allowing you to play on ‘their team’.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Well, you gotta do something to elicit behavior modification and creating some pain for our enemies at least addresses the problem and short of war shows we’re paying attention. The Obama/Kerry Iran deal was a silly attempt. Muslim nations do not abide by treaties and international protocols and agreements with non Muslim infidel nations (or their fellow Muslims for that matter as nationalism drives them as well as Islam) . It is not a sin or dishonorable to lie, cheat and fool non believers and they may keep contract only as long as it serves their purpose but still disregard as much as they can through clandestine operations. At least Trump has publically confronted NK and Iran and I suppose there is only so much you can squeeze short of war. As far as Russia goes Trump has significantly armed the Baltics, Ukraine and Poland . Tariffs should shake up China to reign in NK and more favorable trade balance weakens them. My disappointment though is that it seems sanctions merely make things uncomfortable and moderately difficult for the recipients of sanctions who continue to find ways to circumvent the obstacles we put in place. We certainly cannot simple ignore Rocketman’s gangsterism in Asia nor Iran who promises daily to incinerate Israel. At least they are on notice to be wary of Trump like they would be wary of Nixon or Reagan and not merely thumb their noses like they did to Obama.

    1. According to every organization that looked into it Iran was complying…..TRump has loosened the sanctions on NK…..sanctions are a feel good attempt to look like something is being done….the only ones hurt are the average person….chuq

  3. My opinion is that sanctions will not work and should not be used against either country.
North Korea is not going to denuke. That would be suicide for their leader and his supporters. Iran is not going to nuke up unless we push them to by applying sanctions. And if they get them they won’t use them. Nobody has been dumb enough to use them, except us.

  4. The threat of using them destabilizes and allows these rogue nations to extort concessions from West that would otherwise never be granted. Then they will share technology and sell weapons to others further threatening peace and security. It takes a lot of courage and determination to tell them as Trump has “No, under no circumstances will you have these weapons or else.” and the only way to protect the world. This distasteful stand is the challenge that he has accepted. Why would it be acceptable or prudent to let crazy regimes become part of the nuke world ? I agree NK will probably not denuke unless the consequences become frightening for them. Iran will certainly nuke up. They want to be as powerful in the region as they once were as ancient Persia and are the primary exporters or terrorism around the world. Why would anyone think they would not want to be more threatening by getting nukes ? This forces Israel to make another preemptive strike and then we’ll all be breathing contaminated radioactive dust.
