Boehner is the one who hasn’t been talking (realistically). But it’s not because he doesn’t want to – he’s constrained by a fractured party.
I’ve said it before (but not here, I don’t think): the Red Shirt party isn’t “one party.” It’s several. The Christian Right, libertarians, war hawks, Neanderthals/racists, real states’ rights folks, tea party, big business, small business, fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, tea party, originalists, anti-federalists, gold-bugs, and any/every mix thereof. And their goals are often times contradictory.
Boehner is in a position where he is herding cats. The center cannot hold, as it were. Boehner needs Obama to lose (and lose badly), but Obama is holding (almost) all the cards, so why should he take a dive? Boehner is holding a weak pair to Obama’s flush – both know it – yet he’s insisting that Obama fold? How does this make sense?
The Red Shirts are getting blamed in the polls because, well, they’re (more) wrong. It’s not negotiating when you demand that the other guy shoot his baby (ACA) in the head or you’ll burn down his house with the baby inside. And it’s not negotiating when you demand that the dominant power (President/majority-Senate/minority-house) submit to the extremist will of a small-ish minority. Why should the extremist minority get to dictate to everyone?
Look, I love a false-equivalence as much as the next guy, but we liberals need to get over it. It’s not always BOTH SIDES. Sometimes it’s one side. Sometimes the answer is that the Red Shirts have their heads up their asses.
I think Obama is listening at the opposition not to them….but if I was in his place I would ignore the ass wads completely. For me, the problem is there are no true conservs left only the twats of neo-liberalism that want to masquerade as a conserv……The GOP is definitely screwing the dead horse on this one…..
