How To Mend A Broken War

Donny has been trying to get our attention away from his failed war that Israel conned him into fighting….but so far he has done a terrible job of doing so.

There have been many articles written about how the US could end this war and few are very pleasant…..but then I read an op-ed by Kristof…..

Nicholas Kristof sees the Iran war as a major miscalculation by President Trump, and he warns in a New York Times opinion piece that things could get far worse if Trump doubles down instead of finding a way out. What to do? “His least-bad option, I believe, is to do roughly what he did when he bungled policy toward China and Yemen last year,” writes Kristof. “In each case he boldly declared victory and then frantically negotiated. The United States ended up the loser, particularly vis-à-vis China, but at least the storms calmed.”

The same could happen here, he writes. After declaring that his war aims have been achieved, Trump should press Israel to stand down and quietly seek a negotiated pause in Iran’s nuclear work in exchange for some sanctions relief. “I don’t know if a deal is possible, and it would require immense finesse,” writes Kristof. “But Iran does need revenue and investment, and a reduction in sanctions would be very appealing.” Let everyone declare victory, he advises, because “intensifying and lengthening this war would leave everyone a loser.”

Read the full piece.

To me this idea has Donny written all over it.  He could declare himself the winner and start doing his ‘stable genius’ crap and negotiate.

Then what would Iran do?

After the violation by Israel and the US would they be willing to saddle up with the US?

Then there is Israel…..could Donny con them into stop their blood lust long enough to find a solution.

Like I said the idea sounds good but there are so many moving parts that Donny may have a hard time keeping up.

Any thoughts of this possibility?

  1. I had to smile when I read this part, ‘would require immense finesse’. There is not a single negotiator or diplomat in America at the moment who knows anything about ‘finesse’, especially DT himself. Whatever blackmail Israel has on Trump is driving the war, and unless the Israelis allow Trump to stop the fighting, it will go on. They picked the wrong country to mess with, and now the rest of the world is paying the price for that hubris.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. This exactly!! There isn’t a single person in this administration that understands the term ‘finesse’. Or even the term ‘negotiate’ for that matter. Their idea of negotiation is a combination of threats, extortion and bruit force until the opponent gives in. Or proves to be too strong to be intimidated, in which case the administration will roll over and play dead and create a new crisis elsewhere to try to cover it all up.

      1. GF you are right and Cuba seems to be on Donny’s mind right now….but that could change. chuq

  2. What’s fascinating about all of this is that he’s pretty much utterly ruining his own domestic policies with this whole mess. He and the GOP in general are firmly in the pockets of the fossil fuel industry and have been doing everything they can to cripple alternative forms of energy, and this has pulled the rug out from under their own policies. Skyrocketing prices have more people than ever looking at buying EVs. Even in just the short time since this war started interest in solar power for homes has spiked up enormously because everyone knows that it’s just a matter of time before natural gas prices skyrocket as well as more of the US supply is diverted into the liquified natural gas export business to take advantage of massive price increases in the EU and Asia.

The ignorance and lack of foresight with all of this is simply mind boggling. Of course with this administration this is about par for the course, isn’t it? When I look at the collection of idiots and fools currently running the country it looks like the administration deliberately sought out the stupidest, most ignorant people they could find.

  3. Howdy Chuq!

Essentially, this is just Trump stopping the attacks by declaring victory and pulling our forces back. The question is how would Iran and Israel react to that?

Netanyahu has two goals. First and foremost, he needs to stay in office until the president of Israel declares that he is no longer prosecutable for his corruption. Staying out of jail is his main priority. He needs the violence of war to do so.

Second, he needs to degrade everyone’s ability to attack Israel. He’s “destroyed” Hamas in Gaza. Now, he’s trying degrade Iran’s and Hezbollah’s ability to attack Israel. His success in Iran is questionable. However, he seems to be very interested in destroying Hezbollah in Lebanon like he did Hamas in Gaza. He seems very interested in annexing a “buffer” zone in southern Lebanon.

The problem for Netanyahu is that Iran can still strike Israel. They’re smart enough to plan for this type of attack. And, it is in Russia’s best interest to help Iran continue being armed to do so.

Getting Netanyahu to stop before he’s ready is going to be difficult and likely beyond Trump’s, Rubio’s, and Kushner’s abilities. Primarily, because Israel does not have billions to give them or real estate for them to build a resort on. Other than armament and our mercenary military, we don’t have anything to sell them, so their only diplomatic tool doesn’t work.

Even if Israel and the US stops attacking them, it doesn’t mean that Iran stops. They probably would stop shooting missiles and drones at everyone because of the damage that has been inflicted on them, but they are highly motivated to seek revenge. That point is not lost on Netanyahu, but seems to have been lost on Trump.

The war is an existential threat to them. The ruling groups have been deeply injured. To retain their position, they have avenge the deaths and damage done to them. That means terrorist and cyber attacks. They will be patient, but there will be counter attacks no matter what we do.

    1. I agree, Jack. I think this has more to do with Netanyahu trying desperately to avoid corruption charges than with Israel’s security. His attacks into Lebanon aren’t doing anything except creating more enemies for Israel that might come seeking revenge in the future.

      1. Every Israeli government sees benefit in the continuous struggle against Islam. They are happy to perpetuate it. Unfortunately, too many Muslims in power in Islam see it as profitable to continue the struggle against Israel.

If both sides wanted to solve the “problem” in the Middle East, they would have peace. It isn’t that hard to do.

    2. Jack I try to remind folks about the 1980s and the Iran-Iraq War….that should explain to them just how devastating this whole thing can be. chuq

      1. Probably the only war that was uglier was World War I. The slaughter that took place… It also compares favorably to WWI in its senselessness and accomplishments.
