Closing Thought–25Jun21

I thought Texas was about the worse state government in this country….sadly Florida is closing in on that distinction……

If that idiot Ron DeSantis gets his moronic way,,,,professors ans students will have to declare their political sway……

Public universities in Florida will be required to survey both faculty and students on their political beliefs and viewpoints, with the institutions at risk of losing their funding if the responses are not satisfactory to the state’s Republican-led legislature.

The unprecedented project, which was tucked into a law signed Tuesday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, is part of a long-running, nationwide right-wing push to promote “intellectual diversity” on campuses — though worries over a lack of details on the survey’s privacy protections, and questions over what the results may ultimately be used for, hover over the venture.

Based on the bill’s language, survey responses will not necessarily be anonymous — sparking worries among many professors and other university staff that they may be targeted, held back in their careers or even fired for their beliefs.

Seriously?

What will they do to me if I refuse to register my political views?

Mr. DeSantis……BITE ME!

This could become a thing for all Red legislatures….but sorry my political views are just that….MINE!

“We Have A Deal”!

Well not really…..what the Dems and Repubs have is an agreement……oh boy bi-partisanship is alive and well…..a laughable premise at best.

The two sides have reached an agreement on infrastructure……

President Biden has his long-sought bipartisan deal on infrastructure. Whether it becomes legislative reality is a trickier question. “We have a deal,” Biden announced at the White House on Thursday, flanked by Democratic and Republican senators who crafted the compromise, reports the Hill. The nearly $1 trillion plan includes about $550 billion in new spending on roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects, per Politico. However, it wasn’t immediately clear whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would back the plan. And Nancy Pelosi added a wrinkle of her own. As the AP describes it, she “warned that it must be paired with the president’s bigger goals now being prepared by Congress under a process that could push them through the Senate with only Democratic votes.”

“This is important,” Pelosi said. “There ain’t going to be a bipartisan bill without a reconciliation bill.” Meaning getting all this passed “promises to be a heavy lift for Democrats,” per the Times. On Thursday, however, Biden and senators who worked on the deal were emphasizing their breakthrough on the size, scope, and price of the infrastructure deal. “I clearly didn’t get all I wanted,” said Biden. “They gave more than I think maybe they were inclined to give in the first place.” GOP Sen. Rob Portman added that “we didn’t get everything we wanted but we came up with a compromise that is going to help the American people.” The talks have been ongoing for weeks, to the chagrin of more progressive Democrats who fear that the deal will prevent a larger package from emerging.

I see Sen. Manchin is on-board with this agreement…..does that mean he has seen the his media spotlight is dimming so he decides to play ball with the Dems.

This is an agreement that could fall apart at any moment with McConnell in the background sabotaging every attempt the Dems try to more this country forward.

All he needs to do to torpedo this agreement is pull or threaten 2 GOPers to leave the deal…..

Do not hold your breath for something positive…..that is always the biggest obstructor, McConnell…..

Biden Takes On Gun Violence

The president has issued his plan to rid our streets or violent crime and gun violence……

President Biden believes that the surge in gun violence that has affected communities across the country over the last year and a half is unacceptable, and his Administration is moving decisively to act with a whole-of-government approach as we enter the summer months when cities typically experience a spike in violence.

Today, the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing a comprehensive strategy to combat gun violence and other violent crime. This strategy implements preventative measures that are proven to reduce violent crime, and attacks the root causes – including by addressing the flow of firearms used to commit crimes.

This plan includes such planks as…..

  • Stem the flow of firearms used to commit violence, including by holding rogue firearms dealers accountable for violating federal laws;
  • Support local law enforcement with federal tools and resources to help address summer violent crime;
  • Invest in evidence-based community violence interventions;
  • Expanding summer programming, employment opportunities, and other services and supports for teenagers and young adults; and
  • Help formerly incarcerated individuals successfully reenter their communities.

The whole released statement can be read here……https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/06/23/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-comprehensive-strategy-to-prevent-and-respond-to-gun-crime-and-ensure-public-safety/

My thoughts are that this will do little to bring about a calmer street.

The guns are already on the streets……There are more than 393 million civilian-owned firearms in the United States, or enough for every man, woman and child to own one and still have 67 million guns left over.

There is NO way this meager attempt at appearing as doing something will ever end the violence on the street.

This attempt is similar to applying a band-aid to a massive gunshot wound.

This is a PR stunt at best…..and a ‘kick the can down the road’ ploy.
